April 20th marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day, people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Today we are going to talk about three Chinese learners.

Mike Fuksman is from the US. One thing that he really appreciates about Chinese is that it is usually quite direct. When he breaks each word down into its individual characters, they make sense together. “Elevator” is translated character by character. It means “electric stairs.” It’s pretty straightforward.

Alex Tani is British. At the age of 13, he started taking Chinese classes at school. After he moved to Beijing, he lived with locals. As a language lover, he would try to chat with them in Chinese, sharing details about their daily lives. Sometimes they would also go to KTV together. The music and language learning flowed with ease. This was an environment where he could be lost in the Chinese language and culture while still expressing himself.

Jennifer Holstein is an American girl. Since she started learning Chinese at the age of 5, the language has been part of her life. She moved to Beijing in high school for a language program. The school day was long and hard. Each morning, the sound of a wake-up call would ring at 6:30. Class went until 5:15 p.m. each day, and then she had another three hours of monitored night study in the evening.
