With Halloween around the corner, kids are about to collect bags full of candy, including chocolate. Meanwhile, a group of researchers in the Netherlands has been experimenting with a method to make chocolate more of a “treat” than ever. While chocolate is delicious for many reasons, this study focused on how it cracks when it is bitten. Corentin Coulais, the researcher teaching physics at the University of Amsterdam says, “To better how it feels in the mouth, we gave ‘geometry (几何学)’ to chocolate, which would then change the way it breaks.”Giving it “geometry” involved using a 3D printer to produce dark chocolate in various ways. Rather than creating a flat, solid piece, the machine printed it into a simple S-shape, or zigzagged super-thin layers back-and-forth several times, or into increasingly complicated spirals (螺旋形). The resulting pieces were fed to 10 eager volunteers. It turned out that the crunchiest (最松脆的)—while remaining easy to bite—was the chocolate shaped into fairly complicated spirals. It was also the top tasting experience. The researchers also used a machine to crack the various shapes and see which was the crunchiest. Plus, they recorded the sounds of the cracking, because a pleasurable eating experience doesn’t only take place in the mouth, but can be affected by the noises in your head. The general winner remained that spiral.“It’s too early to say whether chocolate will soon be made differently,” Coulais says.He is working with a couple of organizations to see how it might be applied in materials other than chocolate—ones that might be used in vehicles, for example, to make them less dangerous when they crash.Understanding cracking could make life safer—in cars or airplanes or wearing helmets. It could also make those Halloween treats even tastier.24. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?A. By discussing a case.B. By making a prediction.C. By presenting a scene.D. By explaining a phenomenon.25. What is the function of the 3D printer used in the experiment?A. To explore the way chocolate breaks.B. To create chocolate in various shapes.C. To improve chocolate tasting experience.D. To record the sounds of chocolate cracking.26. What does Coulais most expect after the study?A. The attraction of Halloween treats.B. The change in chocolate production.C. The growing awareness of driving safety.D. The application of the findings in other fields.27. What is a suitable title for the text?A. Geometry makes a tastier chocolateB. Complicated spirals are the championC. A knowledge of cracking matters a lotD. The crunchiest chocolate is newly bornCHow clever can a computer be? Maybe you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child. If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory. It can remember many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season and the weather in every city across the US. He also knows every word in the dictionary. However, if you ask Smarter Child other private questions, you will get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!”, and asking where he lives, you will get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary.com. For the weather, he visits www.intellicast.com.  He turns to www.the-scientist.com for scientists and www.moviefone.com for a fantastic movie. Some scientists believe that by joining many systems of the Internet, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the combined (结合的) knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is obvious to any young child. If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems. The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it by himself. Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he needs programmers to make better systems that allow machines to solve problems of common sense, which is a huge challenge.28. What may be unknown to Smarter Child?A. His age.                  B. The weather in New York.C. A word in the dictionary.      D. A player’s name of the Boston Redsox.29. Which website can Smarter Child visit to answer the spelling questions?A. www.moviefone.com         B. www.intellicast.comC. www.the-scientist.com     D. www.ahdictionary.com30. What does the underlined word “discerning” in paragraph 4 mean?A. Preventing.        B. Copying.       C. Inventing.       D. Telling.31. How is boy-computer David different from Smarter Child?A. He has a huge memory.         B. He can think and learn independently.C. He can make a weather forecast. D. He deals with information fast.DAn estimated 5.7 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease-the most common type of dementia(痴呆)-and that number is expected to more than double by 2050. Early diagnosis is crucial for patients to benefit from the few therapies available. But no scans can deliver a conclusive diagnosis while a person is alive; instead doctors have to conduct numerous and complicated clinical and neuropsychological tests. So there is growing interest in developing artificial intelligence to identify Alzheimer's based on brain imaging.Researchers at the University of California,San Francisco, have now successfully trained an AI algorithm(算法)to recognize one of the early signs of Alzheimer's-a reduction in the brain's glucose(葡萄糖)consumption-in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The algorithm accurately predicted an eventual Alzheimer's diagnosis in nearly all the test cases, according to the study. In PET imaging, a very small amount of a radioactive compound are injected into the body, producing three-dimensional images of metabolism(新陈代谢),circulation and other cellular activities. PET is well suited for an AI diagnostic tool because Alzheimer's leads to subtle changes in the brain's metabolism that begin years before neural(神经的) tissue starts to go downhill, says study co-author Jae Ho Sohn,a radiologist at UCSF. These changes are "very hard for radiologists to pick up,"he notes. The algorithm was trained and tested on 2,100 PET brain images from about 1,000 people 55 years and older. The images came from a 12-year study that tracked people who would ultimately be diagnosed with Alzheimer's, as well as those with mild memory declines and healthy control participants. The algorithm was trained on 90 percent of the data and tested on the remaining 10 percent. It was then retested on a second, independent data set from 40 patients monitored for 10 years. The algorithm was highly sensitive and was able to recognize 81 percent of the patients in the first test group and 100 percent in the second who would be diagnosed with Alzheimer's six years later, on average. The findings were published in February in Radiology. The algorithm is based on "deep learning ,a machine-learning technique that uses artificial neural networks programmed to learn from examples. "This is one of the first promising, preliminary (初步的)applications of deep learning to the diagnosis of Alzheimer's," says Christian Salvatore, a physicist at Italy's National Research Council, who was not involved in the study. “The model performs very well when identifying patients with mild or late diagnoses", he says, “but catching it in the earliest stages remains one of the most critical open issues in this field."32. People are increasingly interested in using AI to identify Alzheimer's because______A. the number of people suffering from dementia is more than doublingB. diagnostic methods that are both reliable and convenient are in needC. there are only a limited number of effective therapies for the patientsD. diagnosing Alzheimer's disease through AI is still an unexplored area33. What can we learn about PET imaging?A. It recognizes the worsening of the neural tissue.B. It reduces the glucose consumption in the brain.C. It changes the pattern of the brain's metabolism.D. It photographs various kinds of cellular activities.34. According to Paragraph 4, ________.A. 90% of the people in the study were trained on the algorithmB. the participants in the study consist of people both young and oldC. 81% of the people in the first test group were diagnosed with Alzheimer'sD. the algorithm managed to recognize all the patients in the second test group35. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5?A. The algorithm serves as a promising treatment of Alzheimer's.B. Deep learning has been widely applied in diagnosing Alzheimer's.C. To detect Alzheimer's in its earliest stages calls for more exploration.D. Whether to use the model to detect Alzheimer's remains a critical issue.第二节5小题每小题2满分10根据短文内容从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项选项中有两项为多余选项。As is known to all, true beauty comes from within, but sometimes it’s not easy to know how to explain it. ____36____.Inner beauty is in the everyday choices you make. When we are faced with small, daily choices such as whether to tell a white lie to avoid trouble, our inner beauty or lack thereof comes out. ____37____. At last, after three long years, the “PCHS” letters on my uniform would soon be edged with gold cording, identifying me as the important Captain of Polk County High School cheerleaders, which was quite an accomplishment before I ended my school days in a blaze of glory.“Girls,” she began, “it is my pleasure to announce that Terry Shaw has been elected Captain of Polk County High School cheerleading team.” A resounding cheer was heard throughout the gym. How could this be? I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne. She had stolen my thunder and swept my dream right out from under me. Finally, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.” I didn’t reply her with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that. All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed the front door, stomped up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of sobs and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep. The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates. How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived, Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well.注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Just then Terry asked me if we could gather all the girls and work with them together._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________At the end of the year, the Annual Sports Award Ceremony was held to honor the valuable players and cheerleaders. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________               答案与详解【答案】1-5 CBBCA   6-10 ABBCC    11-15 BAACC   16-20 ABABC21. We? Was she kidding? I just wanted to hate her and she kept making it harder and harder for me to do that. It wasn’t just that she showed interest in me—her interest was warm and genuine. Terry always made sure to include me when discussing changes in our routine and eventually I overcame myself and we grew to be very close friends. At the end of the year, the Annual Sports Award Ceremony was held to honor the valuable players and cheerleaders. We decorated the hall, talking about all the good times we had shared during our last year together. Later in the evening we arrived and listened as the various trophies were awarded to the most valuable player of each sports team. Just as Terry walked off the stage, Coach Maguire stepped up to the microphone again and announced that there was one final trophy to be awarded. The cheerleading “Spirit Award” would now be presented to the girl who showed the most dedicated effort. When I heard my name announced I imagined I was as shocked Terry was coming toward me. We hugged each other, and Terry whispered, “Nobody deserves this more than you.”
