One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more method for her to help solve my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the Children’s Room. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eye. It was a picture of a beagle (小猎犬) which looked just like my dog. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer. But one morning, he was gone. He was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under a tree I sat. I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story. It’s about a dog like mine who had been separated from his family. It seemed that Amos was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, he finally found his way back home. The final scene of reunion continued on and on, until my own lost dog and I were running together again in my mind.
My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a whole book, and I loved reading that book.
Though I never told my mother about my mysterious experience that summer, she saw a slow but great improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. Years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and wrote his own books, articles, poetry and fiction.
19.What can we learn about from Paragraph 1 and 2?
A.The writer’s family had no time to raise a dog.
B.The writer treated his dog as his most trusted friend.
C.The book attracted the writer because he had heard of it.
D.The writer’s mom cared little about his reading problem.
20.Why did the writer manage to finish reading the whole book?
A.He enjoyed reading stories with happy endings.
B.The book was about his own childhood and his pet dog.
C.He had a similar experience with the little boy in the story.
D.His mother ordered him to read it during the summer holiday.
21.What did the book Amos, the Beagle with a Plan really mean to the writer?
A.It made his dream come true. B.It opened a door to his reading.
C.It helped him find back his dog. D.It kept him away from the real world.
22.Which one could be the best title of the passage?
A.My Caring Mother B.Happy Summer Time
C.The Power of a Book D.My Beagle and I

When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cell phones?
Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it,” he says. “If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground, and it becomes a big problem.”
Cell phones contain some harmful materials, like lead and cadmium (镉). They can harm the environment, wildlife, and even humans. If your phone goes to a landfill, these harmful materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we need for drinking or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year. That results in a lot of landfill and produces a lot of harmful materials.
“At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again,” explains Mike. “We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel (镍) and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts.” Mike says, “Recycling your old phone is easy. You can usually just take it into a cell phone shop and they’ll send it to us.”
So, before you throw that old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone shop near you and give them your old phone.
23.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To show the importance of cell phones. B.To explain how harmful cell phones can be.
C.To introduce a cell phone recycling company. D.To suggest a way to deal with the old phones.
24.According to the passage, what happens to the old cell phone if someone throws it away?
A.It will be recycled and become something useful again.
B.It may cause a serious problem of water pollution.
C.It will be sold to another customer in the shop.
D.It may be made into some harmful materials.
25.Which of the following new products can NOT be made from the old cell phones?
A.Steel. B.A new battery. C.A plastic case. D.A plastic fence post.
26.In which column of a newspaper can we probably find this passage?
A.Green Life. B.Sports. C.Fashion. D.Culture Focus.

“Desperta’t, Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice calls, and I sit up quickly. Today is the day! The day that I will be a casteller for the first time in my life. Here in Spain, building human towers, or castells, is very popular. People from different places get together to compete.
While I and my family are waiting to compete, my friend Tomeu comes. He and his family are also part of our team.
“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu?” I ask.
Tomeu smiles at me. “We are never ready, Jordi. None of us knows for sure how it’ll go. But you must have faith in the others. You must trust those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.” Tomeu pats me on the shoulder. “Have faith. Have focus.”
Soon, too soon, it is our turn. Father and three of the strongest men stand in a circle and hold tightly to each other’s arms. Four smaller men climb up to stand on their shoulders, creating a strong second level. Our tower is growing taller and taller. Next, my mother helps form the fifth level.
Then suddenly it’s my turn. “Faith and focus,” Tomeu says. I climb over the backs of the first two levels without difficulty. But when I reach the fifth level, my knees start to tremble, for I’m very high off the ground. I place my foot into the waist belt of my mother and try to stand, but my foot slips off the belt, and the tower below me moves a bit. My heart begins a crazy dance.
“Tranquil. Easy.” My mother whispers. I take a deep breath to calm myself and again place my foot into her belt. I push myself to a stand and step onto her shoulders. With focus and trust, I straighten my knees slowly until I’m standing. Below me, I feel my mother’s strength. Opposite me, Tomeu has also come to a stand on his mother’s shoulders. He and I hold each other’s arms, making a strong sixth level.
I turn my face up to the sun and laugh, for I am no longer frightened. Soon, I feel my sister’s hands on my feet. I work hard to hold myself straight and strong for her. Once she climbs onto my shoulders. our tower is complete.
The crowd cheers loud. I smile across at Tomeu. Whether or not we win this competition, I know we’ve done what we set out to do. Today, I am a casteller!
