The Most Popular National Parks in the U.S.

Stretching along 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and covering more than 15,000acres, this Midwestern park is ideal for relaxing on a beach, hiking the 50 miles of trails, and exploring the diverse ecosystem, The sands are the main attraction with rare plants, and various birds.         I was picking through coat pockets and madly shaking all my old purses and wallets. I was looking for pennies, quarters—anything that would help me make it to the end of the week. It sure was feeling heavy.

A hopeless girl in her twenties, I was a single parent, with a one-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.

Life consisted of ups and downs. One year, I was having baby showers and taking vacations in the mountains of Tennessee. The next, I was searching around my small, two-bedroom apartment collecting loose change to buy food and gas. Suddenly, I found myself becoming poor, and it was hard.

I'll never forget the joy of finding one penny during my hunt, then two, then fifteen, and then twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six. Every time I found one, I felt excited. Looking back now, I see that it was somewhat ironic(讽刺的) because I had looked down on pennies at one point in my life.

I sat in my bedroom that night and sorted all the change from my hour-long quest. I smiled and made jokes with my daughter while we packed our pennies. Her brother joyfully bounced up and down in his bouncer. They had no idea how many nights I would cry with my face buried in the pillows, wondering how I would keep a roof over their heads, lights on in the house, and food on the table.

I remember those days like they were yesterday, but I don't remember them with sadness. I remember them intentionally because I promised myself that if I were ever to escape the pains of poverty, I would never forget the value of a penny.

        I've kept that promise, too.

4Why did the author shake her old purses?

A.To look for money to pay for their expense.

    B. To purchase something for her children.

    C. To make money at the end of the week.

    D. To put them into her coat pockets.

5What do we know about the author?

    A. She could make ends meet. B. She often lived a hard life.

    C. She was once living well. D. She enjoyed her family life.

    6What is the author's promise?

    A. To help others little by little. B. To find great value in little things.

    C. To bring happiness to her children. D. To forget the sad days intentionally.

7What does this text want to convey?

    A. It's no use crying over spilt milk.

    B. We should repair the house before it rains.

    C. Each family has its own happiness and unhappiness.

    D. One penny is the small seed from which fortunes spring.

On January 22, a massive iceberg broke off from Antarctica's Brunt Ice Shelf. Scientists say the iceberg was expected to break off and the event isn't connected to climate change. But the size of the iceberg is hard to imagine.

The iceberg, known as "A81", is extremely large. It covers an area of about 600 square miles(1,550 square kilometers).

Antarctica, the world's fifth largest continent, is covered with a layer of ice and snow that's roughly 1.2 miles(1.9 kilometers) thick. As snow falls, it piles up in the center of Antarctica in a huge layer of ice. Over time, the weight of this ice and snow creates slowly moving rivers of ice called glaciers, which push out towards the sea.

When the glaciers reach the sea, they slowly push out beyond the edge of the land, forming huge "ice shelves". These are massive sections of ice that spread out over the sea, floating on the water below. Antarctica's largest ice shelf, the Ross Ice Shelf, is about the size of France.

From time to time, the edges of the ice shelves break off. This is a natural process, called "calving". Though calving events are a normal part of the ice shelf in Antarctica, one expert describes huge calving events like this one as "spectacular".

Unlike an ice shelf, sea ice isn't attached to Antarctica's land. It's a layer of ice that floats on the surface of the sea. The sea ice is there year-round. It grows larger in the cold winters, and smaller as it begins to melt in the summers.

It's now summer in Antarctica, and scientists say the sea ice is disappearing "unusually" rapidly. Last year, with temperatures warmer than normal, Antarctica set a record for the lowest amount of sea ice ever recorded. Scientists say Antarctica's sea ice could set a new record low again this year.

8Why have a lot of icebergs broken off from Antarctica in recent years?

    A. Because of climate change. B. Because of human activities.

    C. Because of their extremely big size. D. Because of the amount of iceberg.

9What does the underlined word “calving” probably refer to in paragraph 5?

    A. Giving birth.  B. Breaking off.

    C. Coming together.  D. Cutting down.

10What is the scientists' attitude towards the changes of sea ice in Antarctica?

    A. Doubtful. B. Objective.  C. Optimistic. D. Worried.

11What is probably the best title of this text?

    A. Massive Iceberg Breaks from Antarctica

    B. Scientists Say the Iceberg Was to Break Off

    C. Antarctica's Sea Ice Could Set a New Record

    D. The Sea Ice Disappears "Unusually" Rapidly

Many retirees spend time playing games like crossword puzzles, and social games like chess. These games keep people thinking and give their brains a good workout. But can they really help improve memory?

The idea of using games that are specifically designed to brain training is very complicated, but research published in The Cambridge University Press has found that brain games certainly make people think and use acquired skills.

Brain games sharpen certain thinking skills like short-term memory decision making, planning skills, and reaction time according to Dr, Julie Brody-Magid, clinical director of the Memory Disorders Assessment Clinic at Harvard-affiliated MeLean Hospital. Many of these skills decrease as people age, especially after retirement.

"Learning to use your brain in response to other forms of stimulation can help strengthen valuable mental skills, which older people continue to need and rely on every day," Brody-Magid said. The best way to build up cognitive(认知的) reserve is to stay physically active, especially when you age, by taking care of your health by eating right and managing chronic diseases like high blood pressure, and diabetes. All of these go hand-in-hand with playing brain games. "In this way, participating in brain games actually can help with cognition, but it's a team effort," said Brody-Magid, "You can't do it by doing crossword puzzles alone."

So, if you want to mix it up and combine different types of brain boosting games, here's a selection from Very Well Mind. Sudoku, a number placement game, relies on short-term memory and concentration. Crossword puzzles are the classic brain game that revolves around long-term memory and knowledge. You can also find them in newspapers and books. If you prefer online games, you can check out Braingle, a free site that has over 15,000 puzzles, riddles, and more. You can even create your own puzzles to get your creative juices flowing too.

So, play some brain games to exercise your brain cells and harvest all of the benefits.

12What is the purpose of the games in paragraph 2?

    A. To train brain.  B. To improve creativity.

    C. To work out physically. D. To get relaxed.

13How can older people acquire strong mental power according to Brody-Magid?

    A. By only staying physically active. B. By exercising their brain frequently.

C.By participating in more team work. D. By stimulating their cognitive ability.

14What does the author suggest doing to improve your creative ability?

    A. Relying on Sudoku. B. Doing crossword puzzles.

    C. Checking out Braingle. D. Designing puzzles in person.

15What is the text mainly about?

    A. The elderly should play more games than the young.

    B. Brain games help people solve complicated problems.

    C. Playing brain games helps improve your memory.

    D. Crossword puzzles hold the secret of your creativity.

    六、读后续写

    34阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Going to the post office is usually a weekly event for me. I rarely give it any thought other than to drive there, go inside, and drop off my letter or package. However, our world has changed and now I must give careful consideration to this journey, as my age and pre-existing condition put me into the "vulnerable" category. I am worried about getting infected with the pandemic. There are decisions that I need to make. Is this a package that must go out now? I conclude that it is. Is there anyone else who can take the package for me? I conclude there is not. So I have made two decisions already. Next, I must determine which of the two post offices closest to me would be the easiest one to accomplish my goal. I realize the larger one would be my best choice. Three decisions have been made!

On the drive over, I determined that I would look to see the number of cars in the parking lot before making my decision to go in. Upon arriving, I concluded that the car population was small enough, so I pulled into an empty space. My next thought was, "Perhaps I should wait for someone to come out and ask them to take my package in?" Then I realized, I would be making contact with a perfect stranger, and what was the difference between talking to that stranger and just going in and talking to the clerk? Next decision made, I walked inside. There were only two people and both were standing at the counters making their transactions(业务). I walked to the front of what was normally a very long line. I was standing alone, waiting for my turn. I was wondering whether this place had been disinfected(消毒) and was safe to stay here.

Shortly, I was called to the window. I could see that the postal clerk was aware of the fear in my eyes. She quietly stepped back from her station and signed to me to come forward. I stepped up to the counter and placed my package on the scale().

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

She then signed to me to step back.

Again, I believed she saw the terror in my eyes and said, “One moment, Ma'am.” She leaned under the counter and picked up disinfectant. She thoroughly cleaned the credit card machine and the entire counter around it. She then stepped back and again signed to me forward.

As I inserted my credit card, tears started to roll down my cheeks. I was so moved by the care with which she accomplished this usually very simple task. When I had completed the transaction, she again motioned me back as she stepped forward. She took the receipt, wiped it down, and laid it on the counter. Beside it, she placed a clean tissue as she could see my tears were still streaming down my cheeks. She again stepped away from the counter. I picked up the receipt and took a step back. Ingratitude, I bowed to her. She bowed to me with equal respect.
