One night in 1966, Michael Chapman rushed into a folk-music club in Cornwall, England to get out of the rain, and soon found himself onstage playing the guitar.
“They offered me a job to play for the rest of the summer. And I’ve been playing ever since,” Chapman says. “I’ve told that story so many times, but it’s absolutely true. If it hadn’t been raining that night, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”
The British guitar player has spent the 50 years since then on the road. He released some praised albums in the 1970s, but his health went downhill in the 80s and 90s. Like a lot of British artists in the 1960s, Chapman taught himself to play the guitar by listening to American jazz and blues records.
Chapman actually taught photography, but quit when he was 26 to play music full time. When he was starting out, he was often compared to other British acoustic (原声的) guitar heroes of the time, like John Martyn and Bert Jansch.
“The fascinating thing about Michael Chapman is that he doesn’t fit in with those guys of his generation,” says Andrew Male, a music journalist. “He’s always been an outsider. He never moved to London.”
And while he never became part of the London music scene, Chapman was noticed by those musicians. “The 70s caught up with him in the 80s,” Male says. “He had a huge heart attack at the end of the 80s that nearly finished him off. When he made his way back into the world in the early 90s, people had forgotten about him.”
But not everyone. A younger generation of musicians in America, including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and a younger singer and guitarist named Steve Gumi, recently rediscovered Chapman.
“We wanted to capture Michael’s voice and character where he is now. You know, it’s a little road-weary, but he still has it,” Gumi says. “For me, it was really important to get that right,” “He’s the right old musician for present times,” Male says. “I think the music he makes seems quite in tune with where we’re at.”
24. What word can best describe Michael Chapman’s first involvement in music?
A. Unfortunate. B. Untrue. C. Accidental. D. Reasonable.
25. What can we learn about the British guitarist John Martyn from the text?
A. He may be very familiar with American jazz and blues.
B. He cannot get along well with other musicians.
C. He used to teach photography full time.
D. He may be one of the best guitar players in the early 90s.
26. Why did Michael Chapman quit his music career once?
A. He lost his special voice. B. He got tired of competing with others.
C. He suffered from a severe heart attack. D. He was almost forgotten by everyone.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise and Fall of Guitar Music
B. The Sad Story of a Guitar Musician
C. A New Generation Helps an Old Guitar Musician
D. A Guitar Musician’s Back with the Help of a New Generation
C
A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestion, those of children are known to be particularly influenced, said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University. Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally.
Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic?” the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is lying on purpose, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.
To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic?” But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when adults talk with non-fluent language users, such as little kids. Broaders said “as hand movements can express meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases, it certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”
In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to “try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event. Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.”
28. What can we know about gestures from the text?
A. They are rarely used by people. B. They are often used by social workers.
C. They have not any function at all. D. They have certain effect on children.
29. Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders?
A. Children are easy to tell lies. B. These gestures are very attractive.
C. Their memories are affected easily. D. These gestures are used frequently.
30. Which may cause a wrong reply according to the text?
A. Where are you going Lucy? B. Did you cheat in the last English examination?
C. Did you see anything else last night? D. What will you have for lunch?
31. When talking with little kids, adults are supposed to ______.
A. ask less open-ended questions B. use familiar words and phrases
C. use gestures carefully D. ask detailed questions
D
Billions will be spent trying to deal with a bargain (便宜货) in the approach to Christmas. But as close attention turns to whether or not the deals on offer are really cheep, instead of marketing tricks, spare a thought for the thousands of extra deliveries that will be made and the resulting crowding and blockage, CO2 emissions (释放), and stress that this shopping holiday creates.
Demand for more drivers highlights the highly seasonal nature of shopping, with similar increases on Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and the run up to Christmas. Although the industry is constantly learning from past mistakes to better serve customers, it ignores extremely important energy, ability to move around and health issues. Behind the scenes, the basic equipment that makes all this online shopping possible is huge—the extra delivery vans (货车) add to already crowded and blocked roads, and drivers suffer from stress and tiredness. Seasonal shopping events like Black Friday harm people and the planet.
One medium-sized business in London recently told us that roughly 75% of the goods received by its front desk in the run up to Christmas were personal packages. Extremely importantly, in a hub-and-spoke (辐射状的) model, not only do these packages arrive from different vans travelling long distances from different warehouses (仓库), but delivery results in travelling on some of the most precious, crowded and blocked and polluted streets in London—simply to service online shopping preferences.
At this early stage of the next evolution of shopping, it is important that we consider the benefits and broader societal costs of different shopping and delivery options. Or else we will risk fighting with our responsibilities to cut carbon and improve air quality in cities.
32. What can we know about the result of extra holiday delivery?
A. It creates less pleasure. B. It makes people crowd in the shops.
C. It produces more CO2 emissions. D. It makes the drivers earn more money.
33. What can we infer about the drivers in Paragraph 2?
A. They harm the people and the planet. B. They feel tired during the holiday shopping delivery.
C. They lead to crowded and blocked roads. D. They are needed less on Mother’s Day.
34. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “highlights”?
A. challenges. B. declares. C. recommends D. emphasizes.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The benefits of holiday shopping.
B. The concerns about the holiday shopping delivery.
C. The stress and tiredness caused by the holiday shopping.
D. The holiday shopping’s influence on society and environment.

U.N. Report Warns Nature Crisis
A new U.N. report focuses on the negative effects of human activity on nature. It says one million plant and animal species on land, in the seas and in the sky are now in danger of extinction.
The 1,800-page report took three years to finish. 36 The Earth has always suffered from human activity, it says. However, these scratches (划伤) have become deep scars (伤疤) over the past 50 years. Species are going to extinct several hundred times faster than the average rate during the past ten million years. It’s something that has never happened before in human history.
37 Since 1970, the human population has doubled. The global economy has grown by four times. To feed, clothe and give energy to this fast-changing world, lots of forests have been cut down. 38 Furthermore, hunting, overfishing and pollution have also been killing species in great numbers.
The problem can be fixed, the report says. 39 The amount of land and sea that is under protection needs to increase rapidly. The report suggests governments should move away from using GDP as a key measure of development. Long-term effects must be considered, too.
Professor Eduardo Brondizio of Indiana University is an author of the report. He says, “We all know what needs to be done. The knowledge is there. 40 ”
A. However, this requires many changes.
B. Over 120 wildlife species are facing extinction.
C. Only experts know how to address the problem.
D. The report listed several causes for the situation.
E. There just needs to be a greater will to take action.
F. It draws on the work of 450 scientists from dozens of countries.
G. Between 1980 and 2000, one million square kilometers of tropical (热带的) forest were lost.

The Science Workshop appealed to a number of students where they had the chance to get involved in different experiments. What’s more, a classroom-decoration competition was held which was truly excellent and showed off students’ creative talent.
The Science Festival has proved to be a huge success. Not only has it broadened our scientific knowledge, but also it has stimulated our creativity and enthusiasm in science.
听力原文
1.
M: How old is Emily turning this year? Didn’t she just have her 30th birthday last year?
W: No, she turned 29 last year. This year is her 30th. Maybe you are thinking of her sister, who will be 31 this year.
2.
W: That’s a fancy watch. Did you get it from your grandfather or something?
M: No. Actually, it’s brand new. It may look old-fashioned, but it’s quite modern.
W: It certainly looks like it was made a long time ago.
3.
M: Is the hat all right? It’s handmade. The quality is excellent.
W: Yes, I agree. But I don’t think it matches my coat.
4.
M: Which suit do you like best?
W: Well, to be honest, the brown one and the white one are not good choices, in my opinion. You are going to a job interview, not a dance party. You should go with something classic, like black or dark blue.
5.
M: Where is Sarah? The meeting will start in 10 minutes.
W: I’m calling her now. Sarah, hurry up! It’s 11:50. Why are you so late?
6./7.
W: Hi, Michael! I heard you just came back from a holiday?
M: Yes. I stayed for a week in China and 5 days in India.
W: You do travel a lot, don’t you? Last year, you went to Norway, right?
M: Well, I’ve been to quite some countries, but not yet to Norway. Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks.
8./9.
W: Welcome to our talk show, Bob. Please make yourself at home. First, could you please tell me something about where you live?
M: Yes. I was born in France, but I grew up in Switzerland. And I recently moved to the UK. Now I live in Weybridge.
W: I see, thank you. Now, let’s move on to your new house.
M: At the back of my house there is a garden. My wife has grown many plants in it. And my neighbor has a crazy barking dog but luckily I like dogs and the dog likes me, so when she sees me she gets really excited and welcomes me home.
W: That’s a nice feeling.
10./11./12.
M: Ivy, how do you like your new apartment?
W: Well, I wish I hadn’t moved in. The man who lives upstairs often plays the piano until midnight. I really can’t stand it.
M: Why don’t you ask him to stop?
W: I’ve tried, but it doesn’t work. What’s worse, he isn’t the only one that I cannot stand. The woman who lives next door often comes over to borrow things, but she never returns anything. M: Then don’t lend her anything!
W: Now I don’t even open the door when she knocks. I’m afraid I’ll have to move again.
M: You can move in with my sister Susan. The girl who was sharing her apartment, Jennifer, has moved out, so she has an extra room now.
W: That’s great. Your sister is such a great girl. I’ll call her and move in with her as soon as possible. After all, I need to sleep well every night in order to do well in the coming exams.
13./14./15./16.
M: Sue, we’ve been here for 25 minutes. Can we go soon?
W: Yeah, in 5 minutes.
M: You said that 15 minutes ago.
W: Well, the salesgirl just showed me a light purple dress. I want to see how it looks on me.
M: What about the yellow dress? You said you liked that one.
W: No, I said I liked the blue one. The yellow one was too long. Anyway, I like this purple one.
M: OK, why don’t you just buy it so we can go?
W: No, I’m not going to buy any of these dresses, actually.
M: But you just said you liked that one!
