Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys. They would always occupy the same spot on the table every time.
Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
I was more than happy to do it. At age five, this kind of task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, and then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Now 28, I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. On that evening, I helped him carry his bags into his study as usual. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.
It was a new comb. This one was brown. I hadn’t noticed that he’d changed it. After cleaning it, I passed it back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before.
    24. From the first three paragraphs, we can learn ________.
    A. the precious green comb of Dad was made of jade
    B. the earliest memories with Dad were full of joy
    C. the author wasn’t willing to clean the comb for Dad

    B. That he was eager to get everything on track.
    C. That he hoped to earn a better life for the family.
    D. That he wanted to keep the life for his family stable.
    26. What emotional changes did the author experience when staying with Dad these years?
    A. mad → satisfied → warm
    B. satisfied → worried → angry
    C. warm → concerned → uncomfortable
    D. cheerful → mad→ warm

Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated(航行)the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. It's not that she does it in a canoe without technology, but rather uses the natural technology around her. It's called Way finding, and was taught to her by her father.
“My father was my foundation, my rock.”she says of her first voyage with him from Oahu to Lahaina in a traditional canoe. He taught her how to read the stars, the ocean swells and how to use them to hold the course.“Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when you are Way finding. You have to look at each and determine if they are rising or setting. You know this star and the direction it represents. If you can do that, you can use it as a tool to orient(确定方向)."Kala added.
Kala sailed the canoe in the ocean for up to three weeks. During the day, Kala used the sun until it hit a certain height. When she got closer to land, she looked for certain species of land birds and stationary clouds that indicated there was land below. The longer voyage required Kala to spend hours studying the day and the night skies. It was demanding physical work. But it also had its moments of awe. For Kala, the beauty was in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. So when she was not sailing, she was teaching Way finding skills to school-aged children in hopes of preserving the skills her ancestors relied on.
It's easy to get lost in the immediacy of the technology of our day, to be consumed by screens and miss the nature that unfolds around us.But if we will take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness.

    A. Enjoying the screens. B.Exploring the universe.
    C. Getting close to nature. D.Keeping the earth clean.
    31. What is the best title of the text?
A.Finding Our Way B. Navigating the Ocean
C.The Wisdom from Ancestors D.An Unforgettable Voyage

All those Christmas toys and books may spread more than good cheer. A new study has concluded that two common bacteria that cause colds, ear infections and sore throat can live for long periods on the surfaces of toys, books, and other items, even after being cleaned.
The findings just published in the journal Infection and Immunity show some bacteria continue to exist on surfaces for far longer than that has been believed.
The researchers said the study suggests that additional preventive measures may be necessary to prevent infections, especially in settings such as schools, daycare centers, and hospitals. “These findings should make us more cautious about bacteria in the environment since they change our ideas about how these particular bacteria are spread, ” said Anders Hakansson, assistant professor of microbiology andI immunology in UB. “Never before has any paper directly proved that these bacteria can survive well on various surfaces, including hands, and potentially spread between individuals. ”
    S. pneumoniae(肺炎链球菌)is widespread in daycare centers and a common cause of hospital infections. Hakansson explained to us that it commonly causes sore throat and skin infections in children and adults.
To reach their conclusions, the UB researchers tested the surfaces of toys in a daycare center. They found four out of five toys tested positive for S. pneumoniae and several sur- faces, such as baby beds, tested positive for S. pyogenes(化脓性链球菌), even after being cleaned. The testing was done just before the center opening in the morning so it had been many hours since the last human contact.
“Bacterial colonization(细菌增殖)doesn’t, by itself, cause infection but it’s a necessary first step if an infection is going to become established in a human host, ” Hakansson explains, “Children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems are easily infected. ”
    32. What does the study find?
    A. Schools need more preventive measures.
    B. Bacteria seriously affect children’s health.
    C. Child-related toys can spread many diseases.
    D. Two bacteria can live on items for a long time.
    33. Which of the following can best describe the findings?
    A. Interesting. B. Shocking.
    C. Pioneering. D. Frightening.
    34. Why are the tests mentioned in paragraph 5?
    A. To give some relevant examples.
    B. To show the reasons for the study.
    C. To list some experimental methods.
    D. To provide support for the findings.
    35. What is the key factor in the formation of infection according to Anders Hakansson?
    A. Immune systems.
    B. Bacterial colonization.
    C. S. pneumoniae.
    D. S. pyogenes.

At age five, this kind of task brought me such joy.
由第四段中的“About two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. (大约两年后,爸爸离开了他的销售工作,开始了自己的批发事业)”,“Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. (爸爸的生意做得不太好,我们的稳定生活开始动摇)”和“Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? 【26题详解】

Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why take the risk and place the whole family in trouble? 和第五段中的“Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me went on. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before.
由第一段中的“Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. (我最早的记忆包括每天晚上爸爸从办公室回家时,和他坐在书房里)”,第四段中的“And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. (他不像以前那样经常回家。当他回家时,总是很晚,我已经在床上了。我开始生气了)”,倒数第二段中的“On that evening, I helped him carry his bags into his study as usual. When I turned to leave, he asked me to clean his comb. (那天晚上,我像往常一样帮他把包搬进书房。当我转身离开时,他让我帮他擦梳子)”和最后一段中的“After cleaning it, I passed it back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad had aged. He had wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiled, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before. 故选A项。

I am the editor of our English paper Colourful Campus.
I am Li Hua, who is the editor of our English paper Colourful Campus.
【点睛】[高分句型1] It’s an honor for me to invite you to contribute to our new column Read Classics Learn English.
[高分句型2] And it will be better if I have your article before February 1.

    Text 1
    W: Yes?
M: I’d like one ticket, please.
    W: Where to?
    M: To Causeway Bay Station.
    W: [1] That’s 8 dollars.
    M: Any discount?
W: [1] You can get a 10% discount if you have an Octopus Card.
    M: Thanks.
    Text 2
M: Have you found any pairs of shoes that fit?
W: Well, I liked the black pair, but my heels kept slipping out of them. [2] The second pair was comfortable, but the color didn’t look good at all. And this pair is a little tight in the front.
    Text 3
W: I’m sorry, but I can’t let you keep these books past their due date. I have other students waiting for them.
M: But what am I going to do? [3] I need these books to finish my term paper that’s due next week.
    Text 4
M: Have you been here before?
W: No, this is my first time. [4] I hope they do something nice with my hair.
M: Oh, I’m sure they will. I always have mine done here. Ask for Randy. He is very good.
    Text 5
W: What time does the play start?
M: [5] At half past seven. But the lights go down five minutes before that.
    Text 6
W: Hello, can I get a taxi? [6] We are just outside the city limits.
M: No problem, ma’am. Where exactly are you going? There is an extra charge for anything over 20 kilometers.
W: The Roxie Club, downtown. There are six of us, though. Do you have any bigger cars, so we don’t need to take two taxis?
M: Yes, on the weekends, we do. However, [7] it’s three dollars more to have the bigger car sent your way.
W: That will be fine, and we should be well under the 20 kilometers to our destination.
M: Yes, I can see that. Would you like us to send that for you now?
    W: Yes, please.
    Text 7
M: Hi, Tracy, [8] I am going out of town this weekend, and I was wondering if you could take care of my dog while I am gone. You know my dog, Jaws, don’t you?
    W: Yeah.
M: Just feed him a kind of dog food today and make sure he has plenty of water in his dish. Oh, and he needs someone to take him for a walk around the block every afternoon.
W: Well, how about if I just throw a bone over the fence to give him some exercise?
M: No, he really needs a walk. Uhh, [9] and he likes to watch the three o’clock Superbone on Channel 4, and then you need to brush his teeth and give him doggy treats at four.
W: You must be out of your mind if you think I am going to watch your dog. [10] I wouldn’t watch that doggy even if you pay me.
    Text 8
M: Have you booked a table, madam?
W: Yes, we’ve booked one for two. The name is Morrison.
M: Oh, yes, we have the table for you near the group. This way, please.
W: Group? What group? Oh, the music group, I suppose. [12] I can’t stand the noisy places. [11] Now where’s the menu?
M: It’s on the wall, madam, on the blackboard.
W: On the blackboard, indeed. I suppose you can’t afford proper menus.
M: I’m sorry, madam, but that’s the way we always do.
W: [12] I have such a busy afternoon in my office. [12] [13] If I were not so hungry, I would leave immediately.
    Text 9
M: Hello, [14] welcome to our program “Today City”. I’m Larry. We’re going to Louisville Kentucky where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle-sized city with a small town feel and big city dreams. [17] Now, Michelle, tell us about your city.
W: Thank you, Larry. [17] Here is my city. Louisville is my city. The first place I take visitors from out of town is to Highland for shopping and night life. [15] When I have delicious Asian food, I always go to the Zen Garden which provides wonderful all vegetable dishes.
M: Wow, that’s interesting. Many people go for healthy food now.
W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and fishing, I go to the Red River area. [16] For completely quiet I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.
M: That all sounds very exciting. I’m sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday. Thank you, Michelle.
