During the two sessions(两会), Lei Jun, who started China's tech company Xiaomi, called for more e-waste(电子垃圾) recycling plans in China.
"China should make plans to make full use of those unwanted phones and computers. It can reduce the country's carbon emissions(碳排放), "Lei told CCTV News.
According to a 2020 UN report, the world's e-waste will reach 74. 7 million tons by 2030. That means it will increase by 100% in 16 years. This makes e-waste the world's fastest-growing domestic(家用的)waste.
The report found that only 17. 4 % of the world's e-waste was collected and recycled in 2019. This means that gold, silver and other high-value materials were mostly burned or thrown away instead of being reused. It's a waste of 57 billion dollars. E-waste can also be bad for the environment and people's health. For example, one phone battery can pollute 600, 000 liters of water.
China is now the world's largest producer of e-waste, followed by the US, India and Japan, according to the UN report. However, tech companies are looking for different ways to solve the problem. For example, US company Apple built a robot called Daisy. It can take 200 iPhones apart within an hour and took the useful materials out. With Daisy, valuable materials can be pulled out more easily.
Xiaomi is also setting up e-waste recycling platforms, where people can give away or sell their old electronics.

Forget about the “post-1995 generation”. Young people born between the mid-1990s and 2000s have another name in English-Generation Z. They grew up in a special period of time-a time in which technology developed fast, social changes happened every day, the internet became universal.
This is a group of people who have been familiar with social media as soon as they were born. “We are the first true digital natives (数字原住民). I can almost create a document (文档), edit it, post a photo on Instagram and talk on the phone, all at the same time,” said Hannah Payne, an 18-year-old student at UCLA, according to The New York Times. “Generation Z takes in information very fast and loses interest just as fast.”
Generation Z-ers are culture creators. “Growing up with the internet has freed this generation from traditional cultural expression,” wrote Grace Masback, a Huffington Post blogger and a Gen Z-er herself. According to Masback, these young people are no longer willing to let their creativity be limited by their parents or traditional rules. They watch videos and read news online instead of on TV, and they share their experiences on social media. “We decide what kind of content we want to experience and choose how we experience it,” wrote Masback.

In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, new brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms handwriting has many benefits. It results in better learning and memory over using a keyboard.
The study was conducted using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. Each was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood (风帽)with over 250 electrodes (电极). The sensors (传感器) in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each person took turns to have a 45-minute examination.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作) skills and senses. It is important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added.

18.Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand?
A.Writing by hand is easier to make the brain work.
B.Hearing the sound made by writing takes much brain.
C.Seeing letters while writing attracts more attention.
D.Plenty of senses are activated to open the brain up.
19.How does handwriting help people according to Van der Meer?
A.It makes people become smarter. B.It improves people’s motor skills.
C.It helps people get more patience. D.It arouses people’s interest in learning.
20.Why did the author write this article?
A.To present a new research on handwriting.
B.To tell people the history of handwriting.
C.To show the importance of writing by hand.
D.To teach people how to improve handwriting.
Maddie Camargo and her mother, Stephanic Dufour, thought the screams for help were just Boy Scouts(童子军)messing around(瞎闹). But then they saw the scene:scouts surrounded a hiker who had taken a scary six-meter drop in an area near the Hoover Dam, a fall that had left his right arm with a bone sticking out.
The mother and daughter were supposed to be having a fun-filled weekend to celebrate Camargo’s 17th birthday. But the kayaking(划独木舟)trip turned into an emergency life-saving adventure. They pulled onto some sand. The boy scouts, who had called 911, had tied a loose bandage(绑带)around the hiker's broken arm to stop the bleeding.

Once upon a time carrots were purple, there were no pineapples in Asia or lemons in America, and many people thought potatoes were poisonous. Many types of fruit and vegetable grew only in one place. So how did they spread all over the world?
Changing colors
Five thousand years ago, carrots only grew in Afghanistan and most were purple. Only a few were orange as they are today! At home in the mountains
Many plants only grow in certain places on Earth, often deep in the jungle. The home of potatoes is in the mountains of the Andes in South America. Bananas come from Papua New Guinea and lemons grow wild in China.
World travel

China has just opened its FAST radio telescope to international scientists. It means scientists across the world can apply for using the telescope to do astronomical observations.
FAST is short for Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope. Its construction was completed in September 2016 and it officially began operating in January 2020. Measuring 500 meters in diameter. FAST is the largest radio telescope in the world, surpassing the 305-meter telescope of the U.S. Arecibo Observatory. FAST is also believed to be the world’s most sensitive single-dish radio telescope, and is 10 times more sensitive than the 100-meter Radio Telescope Effelsberg in Germany.
The major scientific task of the telescope is the observation of pulsars(脉冲星). The study of pulsars can help to confirm the existence of gravitational radiation(引力辐射)and black holes, and help solve many other major questions in physics. Another major scientific goal of FAST is to search for life outside the Earth.
The telescope is located in a naturally deep and round karst depression(喀斯特洼)in southwest China’s Guizhou Province. The first advantage of the selected site is the altitude. The average altitude of Guizhou is about 1,100 meters. Generally, the higher the altitude, the more it can observe. Secondly, the radio telescope needs to have a “big pan” to receive a better signal. The huge natural depression could reduce the difficulty of construction. Moreover, the selected site in Guizhou is far away from cities, and has a small population density, which reduces the interference caused by wireless devices such as TVs, mobile phones and radios from human activities.
So far, FAST has identified over 300 pulsars. Experts predict that the number could reach 1,000 in five years and that the telescope could locate and identify the first pulsar outside the galaxy.
21.Who can use FAST?
A.Chinese scientists. B.Scientists from all countries.
C.Soldiers and policemen. D.All Chinese citizens.
22.When did FAST start working?
A.In 2015. B.In 2016. C.In 2020. D.In 2021.
23.Which of the following is NOT TRUE about FAST’s task?
A.To confirm the existence of black holes.
B.To look for life outside the Earth.
C.To observe pulsars in the universe.
D.To surpass the telescope in other countries.
24.What do we know from the 4th paragraph?
A.The major consideration of the location of FAST.
B.Guizhou Province has the highest altitude in China.
C.People in Guizhou use TVs and mobile phones less.
D.FAST is built in a pan-shape place to keep people out.
25.What do scientists think FAST will be able to do in the future?
A.Identify more than 300 pulsars in five years.
B.Discover the first pulsar outside the galaxy.
C.Locate wireless devices around the world.
D.Collect all kinds of sounds in the space.
