When I was a teenager, I became interested in music. I can still remember listening to my father playing the piano for hours. I used to give myself concerts in my bedroom.
I raised my kids with a lot of music, too. The first song my oldest son learned was sung by the Carpenters. My oldest daughter would dance happily when she heard Abba’s Thank You for the Music. We would sing different songs to each other. It usually lasted for about an hour each night before they went to sleep.
Now I am a grandmother and music still plays an important part in our family's everyday life. My youngest grandson loves music very much! He has his own CD player in his room. When we play the one that he likes best, he will jump up and down.
Someone once asked me if music says things that words can't. At first, I would say no. Then I remembered Grand Canyon Suite and some other music. They are so good and I can't express myself when I listen to them. So, yes, music can say things that words can't.

Are you stressed? Your dog can probably smell it, according to researchers from Queen's University Belfast in the UK.
The researchers carried out a study to find out if dogs could tell the ▲ between a person's normal smell and how he smells when he's stressed.
To do this, they first collected breath(呼吸) and sweat samples(汗液样本) from human volunteers. To make sure the samples work well, the volunteers were all non-smokers and didn't eat or drink anything in the hour before the study.
The team then collected samples after the volunteers completed a difficult maths task. The volunteers were asked to report their stress levels before and after the task. The researchers also checked the volunteers’ stress levels before and after the task by taking their heart rate(心率) and blood pressure(血压). In total,36 out of 53 volunteers reported feeling stressed because of the task and had increased heart rates and blood pressure.
Then each person's relaxed and stressed samples were shown to four dogs —Treo, Fingal, Soot and Winnie. They were asked to find the stressed ones. Surprisingly, the result showed that the dogs got it right nearly 94%of the time. “It was interesting to see how the dogs were good at smelling people's feelings,” said Clara Wilson, one of the researchers. “I hope we can discover even more about these gifted animals and what they can do.”
Ms Wilson also added that the study could be especially useful in training service dogs, since some of them work hard to help reduce stress.

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook has become a must. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry(家禽) and maintain home appliances(修理家电) under new requirements for labor education.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) brought out a new standard for labor education in schools last year. Starting from the 2022 fall semester, students in primary and middle schools have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week.
Labor education helps students value hard work. It includes things like household chores(家务),on-campus labor and community volunteer services.
The new standards include three types of labor tasks. The first is for things like everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances. Next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts, and applying new technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting (激光切割). The third type is service work, which includes volunteer work.
Schools in China have traditionally placed more focus on studying, and many have seen household chores as a waste of children's time. But according to the MOE, labor education must be built up to help students cultivate (培养) social values and develop an interest in labor.
Online, people have been busy discussing the new standards on social media.
Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, strongly supports labor education. For the past year, she has trained her daughters to do household chores and make simple dishes for the family.
“The main idea is to let them share responsibility as family members and become independent as early as they can,” said Liu. “Through doing housework, their hand-eye coordination(协调), time management and organization skills can be trained and it's also good to help them relax."
Through such education, Liu said her twins have found fun in doing chores and are more in dependent.
56. What do we know about the new labor education standard?

D. Students have to take three labor courses every week.
57. What can students learn through labor education?

58. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Why students should receive labor education.
B. What labor education was like in China in the past.
C. The types of labor education included in the new standard.
D. How students find a balance between their study and labor tasks.
59. What does Liu Fang think of labor education?
A. It's too simple for students.
B. It isn't fun enough for students.
C. It takes up too much of students' free time.
D. It helps students develop different skills.

Some Western countries have loosened(放松) their pandemic measures. Some people wonder whether China could do the same thing. They think that Omicron – the dominant variant(变异毒株) in China’s latest COVID-19 outbreak - has become milder(轻微的).
Liang Wannian, head of the National Health Commission's COVID-19 leading task force, said that for the time being, China needs to stick with the policy of continued vaccination(接种疫苗), targeted(精准的) epidemic control and dynamic zero-COVID.
“If there are a large number of people infected(感染的), the number of severe (危重的) cases and deaths in the population as a whole will be high, which can still cause great harm,” Liang said.
Meanwhile, China has adjusted its measures to treat new COVID-19 cases. On March 15, the National Heath Commission brought out a pilot edition (试行版本) of the ninth COVID-19 diagnosis(诊断) and treatment guidelines.
Many changes have been made to lighten the load (压力) on the healthcare system and make sure that people can lead a normal life.
For example, COVID-19 antigen tests (抗原测试), which can be done at home, are now available (可获得的). Also, recovered cases can now be monitored(监测) at home for a shorter time.
The new guidelines are a timely upgrade(更新), rather than just giving up on the country’s dynamic zero-COVID policy, noted China Daily.
In China, the vaccination rate is not high enough to provide strong protection for the vulnerable(脆弱的), including the elderly.
Living with COVID-19 is not a choice for China, said Liang. The government and the Communist Party of China always put people’s lives first, he added.

The world uses about a thousand million (百万) tons of water a day. Water is a human right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the wastewater.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water—that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries. They process (加工) more than 92 million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.
66.How many people have trouble in getting clean water around the world?
A.Under 10 million. B.Only 19 million.
C.About 92 million. D.Over 700 million.

69.At present, the technology to process water_____.
A.needs much energy B.saves much money
C.satisfies everyone D.causes pollution
70.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Water should be a human right. B.The water problem is still serious.
C.Our planet is covered with water. D.Everyone has enough clean water.
Imagine you’re sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. “Oh, that game’s easy. So not worth the time,”one of your friends says. The others agree. Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.
You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure(同伴压力), also called peer influence. You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your “peers”. As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas. We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.
According to Dr. Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.
Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports.
While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us.So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up to you.
71.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing Paragraph 1?
A.To tell teens not to play games. B.To tell teens how to get on with others.
C.To provide background knowledge. D.To give an example of the topic.
72.According to the passage, Dr. Casey probably agrees that teens ________ .
A.like to play driving games with their friends
B.prefer situations where they have time to think
C.may take more risks when their friends are around
D.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own
73.What do the words “in the heat of the moment” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.when teens avoid possible risks B.when teens trust their judgment
C.when teens lose control over their anger D.when teens give consideration to situations
74.If you put the passage into parts, which of the following is the best?
(①=Para. 1;②=Para. 2;③=Para. 3;④=Para. 4;⑤=Para. 5)
A. B. C. D.
75.What does the writer mainly talk about peer pressure in the text?
A.Is it Necessary to deal with it? B.Is it possible to get away from it?
C.Its benefits to teens and friend m making. D.Its influence on teens and decision making.
