    Valentine’s Day Card

Valentine’s Day is time to show special people in your life that you care about them. One way to mark the day is to give Valentine’s Day cards. Homemade cards can be especially fun to share because you can make your friends and family feel extra loved. Here’s how to get started.

Collect supplies (something available to be used)Instead of buying something new, start with what you already have at home. Look in your craft area for colorful paper, stickers, markers, ribbons, and glitter. You can also use recycled supplies, such as flyers you’ve gotten in the mail or colorful packaging from items you’ve purchased.

Get elegantOnce you have your basic card and message, it’s time to layer on more shapes cut from paper. Use fun craft scissors (like waves or zigzags) to cut out hearts, stars, or other shapes of various sizes and glue them onto the card, either on top of one another or in different spots. If you like, you could even tape a small candy or toy to the card.

Start with a baseChoose a piece of thicker paper. You can pick a classic Valentine’s Day color, like pink or red, or any shade you prefer. Fold it in half to make a card with a front and an inside. Or cut the paper into a shape (like a heart) to make a flat card with designs on the front and back.

Add a noteAfter you have the shape of your card ready, write a message on it. You can write a longer note about why you appreciate the person you’ re giving the card to, including an inside joke, or a Valentine’s Day saying. For example, you could write “Our friendship is blooming” and then decorate your card with flowers.

Fun facts about Valentine candy    The first heart-shaped candy boxes were produced for Valentine’s Day in 1861.

Conversation hearts, another popular candy for the holiday, were originally produced in 1800s.

Although roses are popular gifts, 69% of Americans would prefer chocolates.

In Japan, only women hand out chocolates or other gifts on Valentine’s Day. A month later, On March 14, it’s the men’s turn to give gifts to the women in their lives.

41Valentine’s Day is celebrated to ________.

Ashow love and care Bremember someone special

Cshare delicious food Dwelcome the new year

42Which of the following is the right process to make a homemade card?

March 14 is Pi (π) Day, the yearly celebration of a never-ending number—π (3.14159...). The tradition began on March 14, 1988, when a scientist, called Larry Shaw, connected March 14 (3.14) with the number of (3.14159...) and asked his teammates to mark the day by eating pies. Later, more and more people began to celebrate Pi Day each year, and in 2009 the US lawmakers announced Pi Day an official holiday. Pi Day has been noticed in different ways by different groups of people in America.

Restaurants celebrate Pi Day with special selling of pies. Blaze Pizza has continued its tradition by offering a kind of pizza for just $3.14. Blaze Pizza’s boss Jim Mizes said. “We guessed that we would serve as many as a quarter-million pizzas at $3.14 and even more on Pi Day of this year. We think Blaze fans across the US and Canada would come in to celebrate with us.”

Some women scientists also celebrate Pi Day. Since 2015, to encourage more girls to work on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, some women scientists have been wearing purple on Pi Day. They also ask women of all ages and backgrounds to join them by wearing the same color on March 13-14.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will join in the fun with their yearly “Pi in the Sky” challenge. The fun activities are designed to encourage students from 5th to 12th grade to help NASA scientists solve real-world problems using π. Each year, many students take the “Pi in the Sky” challenge to help NASA scientists with their scientific research, which greatly benefits students in their future study.

Though Pi Day celebrations are rather new, π has been around for thousands of years. 4,000 years ago, Babylonians calculated (计算) the area of a circle, giving n a value of 3. The ancient Egyptians came closer to the real number with 3.165 in 1650 BC Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC) was the first to calculate it mathematically. The Greek scientist gave his number between 3+(1/7) and 3+(10/70), which is much closer to “3.14159...”.

47What can we learn about Pi Day from Paragraph 1?

ALarry started the tradition of making pies.

BThe American scientists made it official.

CIt has become popular across the world.

    ADoubtful. BHopeful. CUpset. DSurprised.

    C

If you ever run into Brad Pitt, chances are he won’t recognize(识别)you the second time around. That’s because the famous actor has face blindness(脸盲症).

Face blindness, is the inability to recognize or remember faces, including one’s own. It can cause problems in relationships and in the workplace. Some people with face blindness also have difficulty recognizing animals and telling the differences between objects, such as cars. Others have a much harder time and experience nervousness, depression and fear of social situations.

There are two main kinds of face blindness. Acquired face blindness is caused by brain damage(损伤). Harm to the right side of the brain is more likely to influence your ability to recognize faces you used to know. It is lesser-known and may take a turn for the better. The other main kind of face blindness is born with or developmental, which is much more common. Although it was considered hard-to-find before, scientists now estimate(估计)as much as 2.5 percent of Americans may be developing it. The cause of developmental face blindness is still unknown, but it does appear to run in families. A person with the second kind of face blindness never fully develops the ability to recognize faces.

Adults with face blindness may not realize that other people can recognize and remember faces. They may think they are the “normal” ones. However, a person who develops face blindness following a damage may notice the loss of the ability right away. Children with the illness may have trouble making friends, since they can’t easily recognize others. They usually befriend people with easily recognizable features(特征). They may also find it difficult to tell family members apart according to sight or tell the differences between characters in movies.

At present, there is no treatment for face blindness. However, there are training programs to help these people, such as focusing on the voice, hairstyle and clothing. It may help to make a list of features in mind, such as tall, brown hair, blue eyes, and remember them rather than trying to recall the face. Sometimes it’s the easiest to simply let people know that you have trouble with faces.

52From Paragraphs 1&2, what problem might people with face blindness have?

AGetting lost very often. BKeeping a pet.

CHaving bad relationships. DRemembering car numbers.

53According to Paragraph 3, which is true about the two main kinds of face blindness?

AThe number of acquired face blindness is bigger.

BThe cause of developmental face blindness is known.

CIf Paul is born with face blindness, his family may have it.

DNeither of the two kinds has chances to get better.

54Who will most probably become Laura’s friend if she develops face blindness?

ASarah who is the shortest at school. BBilly who has a cute sister.

CAngela who has a beautiful face. DJeff who is strong in music.

55According to the passage, what can we learn about the people with face blindness?

AThey are seen as “normal” as others.

    BCertain trainings could help them.

CThey can’t use the right side of the brain.

D25 out of 100 Americans develop it.

56Which of the following way is not used by the writer to introduce face blindness?

    AGiving facts. BTelling stories.

    CExplaining new words. DComparing differences.

    第七节  在本节中,你将读到一篇短文。根据所读内容在短文后表格中的空格处填入一个

    恰当的词,并将答案写在答题卡上对应处。每空一词。

Many people dream of traveling into outer space. However, spending too much time in space may cause health problems. That’s why astronauts shouldn’t spend more than six months on the International Space Station (ISS) at a time.

    Muscle(肌肉) and bone loss

In a weightless environment, astronauts don’t need to use their muscles to hold themselves up, so their muscles start shrinking(萎缩). To keep their muscles strong, astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day on the ISS.

    Sleep disorder

In space, the sun rises every 90 minutes. It’s difficult for astronauts to get used to this light-dark cycle when they sleep. Also, they need to sleep in a sleeping bag that is fixed to a wall, and it makes them not comfortable. Astronauts now have individual sleeping pods(分离仓) that help shut out some of the light. Studies still have found that most astronauts only sleep about six hours each night, even though they should have eight and a half hours.

    Brain changes

Scientists have found that the position of the brain changes during spaceflight. It can affect how the brain deal with how we see, stay balanced and move around. That’s why some astronauts can’t control their movement and balance after returning to the Earth. Scientists have also found that astronauts may get used to this change after going on more spaceflights. But they still need to do more research.

    Health problems

    ____59____

    Ways to solve

    Muscle and bone loss

Astronauts needn’t to be supported by ____60____, so they start shrinking.

Astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day.

    Sleep disorder

Astronauts have ____61____ getting used to this light-dark cycle when they sleep.

Astronauts have individual sleeping pods now that help shut out some of the light.

    ____62____

The position of the brain changes during spaceflight.

____63____ still need to do more research about it.
