Last year I experienced a car trouble. I put a big sign “$20 FOR YOUR JACK (千斤顶)” in the windows of my jeep. Some time later, a Mexican family stopped, and the father got off their car.

He expressed through his daughter, who spoke English, that he had a jack. Together we took the wheel off and finished the job in 30 minutes. His wife produced a large bottle of water to wash our hands.

I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it. So instead I gave it to his wife. I asked the lite girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries and peaches for the next few weeks.

When I was walking back to my jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a bag.

I thanked them again, and opened the bag. What did I find inside? A box of food and my $20 bill! I ran to the car. The father saw the $20 in my hand and just started shaking his head no. He said in English with great effort, “Today you, tomorrow me.”
