    Text 1
W: It’s a beautiful day. We should go for a walk in the woods. I bet a lot of people will be having picnics there today.
M: There will be too many people there. A drive to the seaside would be better.
    Text 2
W: Where have you been? I have been waiting here for ages.
M: I got out of bed early and set off on time but then the bus got stuck in traffic.
W: Sounds like you’re not to blame.
    Text 3
M: I need a new plug for the TV. My TV is old but I like it and it still works well.
W: I think you should throw it away and buy another, but it is up to you.
    Text 4
M: This place is a bit expensive, isn’t it?
W: I know. Look at the price of the wine. It only costs a quarter as much at the supermarket.
M: Never mind. It’s our anniversary. Order whatever you want. I think I’ll have the steak.
    Text 5
M: Maybe I should set off for the airport now. John’s plane will arrive soon. He asked me to collect him in the car.
W: You have plenty of time. It’s only 3:00 p.m. You have two hours.
    Text 6
M: Oh, what a surprise to see you! Is there a problem?
W: Yes, I think there is. I have been trying to call you all morning but I couldn’t get an answer.
M: That’s strange. Let me check my phone. I hope it isn’t broken.
W: There is an important meeting at work this afternoon. I wanted to let you know about it.
M: Ah, when I saw you at the door, I thought someone might be ill or have had an accident.
W: No, nothing like that. I just couldn’t get you on the phone. Is it switched on?
M: I’ll have a look. Now I remember — I put it in my coat pocket and my coat is in the car! No wonder I couldn’t hear you calling.
    Text 7
M: Is that the Homes Bureau? Could I make an appointment to see the house on Wood Avenue?
    W: Yes, of course.
M: I saw it on a website. How many bedrooms does it have?
W: There’s one on the first floor and two on the second floor.
M: What is the kitchen like?
W: It’s quite large, and there’s a large living room as well, with a bathroom on each floor.
M: The price is quite high.
W: Well, that is the price the owners have asked — but you may be able to do a deal with them. The best thing for you to do is go and look at the house and talk to the owners.
M: Can I go this afternoon?
W: Maybe that’s too soon. Would tomorrow morning be OK, say 10:00 a.m.?
M: Yes, that would be fine.
    Text 8
M: Do you usually add that much sugar to your coffee?
W: Well, you know tea is my favorite, though I am trying to like the taste of coffee. I find it is too bitter.
M: When I started drinking coffee, I added lots of milk and sugar. As I got older, I cut out milk entirely. Now I don’t even add sugar. I just drink it black.
W: Black coffee? No, thank you. However, coffee ice cream, I would gladly try that.
M: Sure, have you tried chocolate ice cream mixed in with coffee? It’s heavenly. Even if you don’t like coffee that much, I bet you will like that.
W: I’ll try it if you’re buying. And I will treat you to green tea ice cream if you want to have a try.
M: Deal, let’s have a tea time dessert party. Invite a few of your friends, and I will invite some of mine. We will see who has the best taste.
W: Well, that doesn’t sound sweet.
    Text 9
W: It’s dad’s 50th birthday on Saturday. It’s a big day for him, so perhaps we should do something special.
    M: You mean a party?
W: I thought about that, but maybe that would be hard to organize during the exam time.
M: That’s true. I do have three tests next week. Maybe we could take him to the cinema.
W: I don’t think that would be special enough.
M: We could go for a meal to his favorite restaurant — all the family.
W: That’s the best idea. I think he’d like that — you, your sister, dad and me. It would be nice.
M: I’ll call Jane and tell her not to make other arrangements.
    W: Where is she?
M: Her friend Alice called and they went over to Judy’s house.
W: That girl spends more time there than she does with us
M: Well, we’ll be together as a family on Saturday.
W: If we can get a table at the restaurant, that is.
M: I don’t think it will be a problem. It’s only Monday. They shouldn’t be booked up yet. Give them a call.
W: I’ll do that right away. Then this afternoon I will go to town and buy dad a present.
M: Get him a birthday cake as well.
W: No, I think I’ll make one myself. It feels nicer when someone has made an effort.
    Text 10
M: Hello everyone and welcome to the garden seminar. We all know that plants grow well in warm and sunny places, but we aren’t all lucky enough to live somewhere like that. Bill and Sally Jones live in a high, windy area — not ideal for gardening — but they are also champion vegetable growers. How do they do it? Well, we all know that vegetables need plenty of water — not just a few drops or a few pints, but gallons of it. It rains a lot where the Jones family live, so they have a good water supply. It’s also very open, so they get enough sunlight. The real enemy is the wind. They tried different ways of protecting the plants — planting trees for shelter and building fences — but what they use now for the more delicate plants are glass houses. With several of these they are able to grow plants which would not normally survive in their location. By adapting to the conditions in which they live, Bill and Sally have developed a winning way with their crops. And their experience can serve as a lesson for other growers who experience similar difficulties.

    B
“You brought home such a big dog on Christmas Eve? She’s not coming into my house.“ I said as they came. But my husband was happy to have the dog. From what he described, she had been neglected and tied to a tree. Her owners had to get rid of her because they were moving, so my husband brought her along.
I’m not against animals, but my work in emergency medicine let me see plenty of “the dog never bit anyone before” cases that I didn’t want repeated with my two-year-old. My husband adapted an area in the barn for her. He fed her in the morning before work and took her out in the evening. She was well-behaved. Still, I wasn’t taking chances with my child.
As the seasons passed, I started to feel bad for Brandy being stuck outside all the time. She seemed kind and gentle. Day after day, I would notice Brandy in her little space, alone, watching the house. The guilt was eating at me.
As my daughter grew a little older, I decided to let Brandy inside. She was a perfect house guest, showed no sign of aggression (进攻) and even became buddies with one of the cats. We made up for lost time with treats and soft beds. Once she moved into our house, she became a member of our family. We took her camping and found her to be great at traveling. She never caused a single moment’s trouble. As she became senior, I found a little dog Shirley through a rescue. We took Brandy to meet her, and Brandy played with the puppy, making it clear that there would be no problems bringing the young one home.
Brandy’s patient, gentle spirit showed me that you can’t judge a book by its cover—or a dog by its reputation. By opening my mind, I learned the truth about her. I’m so thankful for Brandy and the way she touched our lives, and the lessons she taught me.
    24. What did the author learn about dogs through her work?
    A. Large dogs will be a threat to people. B. Babies should be protected from dogs.
    C. Dogs will bite people unexpectedly. D. Dogs shouldn’t live in man’s rooms.
    25. What made the author feel guilty?
    A. Her decision to adopt a new dog. B. Her refusal to admit Brandy home.
    C. Her giving Brandy little living space. D. Her keeping her daughter off Brandy.
    26. When did the author decide to adopt Shirley?
    A. When old age was a problem for Brandy. B. When an animal rescue center contacted.
    C. When Brandy turned friendly to the cats. D. When Brandy got a promotion at home.
    27. What lesson did the author draw from her experience?
    A. Rescued animals are a source of adoption.
    B. Treating animals with respect is rewarding.
    C. Dogs can be trained to be human companions.
    D. Don’t judge things by the fame or impression.
C5. B6. A7. D
文章第二段讲到“I’m not against animals, but my work in emergency medicine let me see plenty of ‘the dog never bit anyone before’ cases that I didn’t want repeated with my two-year-old. (我并不反对动物,但我在急诊医学方面的工作让我看到了很多‘狗以前从未咬过任何人’的病例)”可知,作者的工作经历告诉她,狗会在不经意间咬人。故选C。
25.细节理解题。文章第三段讲到“As the seasons passed, I started to feel bad for Brandy being stuck outside all the time. (随着季节的流逝,我开始为布兰迪一直被困在外面感到难过)”可知,作者感到内疚是因为她拒绝让Brandy进到屋里来。故选B。
26.细节理解题。文章第四段讲到“As she became senior, I found a little dog Shirley through a rescue. We took Brandy to meet her, and Brandy played with the puppy, making it clear that there would be no problems bringing the young one home. (当她变老后,我通过救援找到了一只小狗雪莉。我们带着布兰迪去见她,布兰迪和小狗一起玩,明确表示带小狗回家不会有问题)”可知,当年老对布兰迪来说是个问题的时候作者才决定收养雪莉的。故选A。
文章最后一讲到“Brandy’s patient, gentle spirit showed me that you can’t judge a book by its cover—or a dog by its reputation. (Brandy耐心、温和的精神告诉我,你不能根据封面来评判一本书,也不能根据声誉来评判一只狗)”可知,作者从她的经历中吸取的教训不要根据名声或印象来判断事情。故选D。
    C
For a century, Jordan Creek cut across downtown Springfield. Over the decades, the stream regularly flooded into the city’s commercial heart. Residents had been tired of the floods so they created concrete banks to cage the stream and in 1932 buried the waterway, hiding it in culverts (排水管) under city streets. It was man’s attempt to control floodwater. That was the old way of thinking.
For a while, that controlled the floods. But the roads and other hard surfaces prevented water from going into the ground and allowing more rainwater into the enclosed streams than they could handle. Eventually, the water won. The neighborhood flooded in 2000, 2008 and 2016. For two decades, the city discussed freeing the stream and allowing water to run over the floodplain. Finally, a project to uncover 1,100 feet of Jordan Creek and build three bridges is moving forward. The new way of thinking is to give the water some room, leave some areas for floods and just let nature be nature.
Uncovering buried waterways to bring them back to life is a process known as “daylighting”. Coverings are removed and an attempt is made to restore the natural flow and the surrounding ecosystem.
The primary goal of the project is flood control. But the work has a variety of benefits. Native plantings will help improve the water quality by filtering (过滤) rainwater. The stream will replace an unsightly landscape and become a “string of pearls (珍珠)” connecting parks and green areas in the city’s “Quality of Place” initiative.
The benefits go beyond that. Stream restoration is neighborhood restoration. The project may promote economic development and increase property values and tax revenue. While the projects can be expensive, they end costly maintenance. Returning to nature is cheaper than maintaining concrete culverts.
    28. What did Springfield citizens in the 1930s probably believe?
    A. Man can control nature.
    B. Life is prior to development.
    C. Business is the heart of a city.
    D. Residents should not live by a river.
    29. What was one result of covering Jordan Creek?
    A. Three bridges were removed. B. Water went into the ground.
    C. Floods hit the neighborhood. D. Rainwater was well handled.
    30. Which aspect of the project does paragraph 4 mainly discuss?
    A. Economic value. B. Construction planning.
    C. Flood management. D. Environmental impact.
    31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A Solution That Proves a Problem
    B. Old Thinking Inspires New Changes
    C. “Buried” Streams Turn into Urban Centers
    D. “Daylighting” Buried Waterways to Refresh Cities
A29. C30. D31. D
根据第一段“Residents had been tired of the floods so they created concrete banks to cage the stream and in 1932 buried the waterway, hiding it in culverts (排水管) under city streets. It was man’s attempt to control floodwater. That was the old way of thinking.(居民们已经厌倦了洪水,所以他们建造了混凝土堤岸来阻挡溪流,并于1932年将水道掩埋,藏在城市街道下的涵洞中。人类试图控制洪水。那是旧的思维方式)”可推知,20世纪30年代Springfield的市民可能认为人类可以控制大自然的力量,故选A。
29.细节理解题。根据第一段中“in 1932 buried the waterway, hiding it in culverts (排水管) under city streets.(并于1932年将水道掩埋,藏在城市街道下的涵洞中)”和第二段中“Eventually, the water won. The neighborhood flooded in 2000, 2008 and 2016. (最终,洪水取得了胜利。这个社区在2000年、2008年和2016年遭遇了洪水)”可知,人们埋上Jordan Creek这条水道后,洪水袭击了社区。故选C。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Native plantings will help improve the water quality by filtering (过滤) rainwater. The stream will replace an unsightly landscape and become a “string of pearls (珍珠)” connecting parks and green areas in the city’s “Quality of Place” initiative.(本土种植将有助于通过过滤雨水来改善水质。该溪流将取代难看的景观,成为连接公园和绿化地区的“珍珠链”,以配合城市的“优质地点”计划)”可知,第四段主要讨论了该项目对环境带来的影响,故选D。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“For two decades, the city discussed freeing the stream and allowing water to run over the floodplain. Finally, a project to uncover 1,100 feet of Jordan Creek and build three bridges is moving forward. The new way of thinking is to give the water some room, leave some areas for floods and just let nature be nature.(二十年来,这座城市一直在讨论解放这条小溪,让洪水漫过平原。最后,一个挖掘约旦河1100英尺并建造三座桥梁项目正在向前推进。新的思维方式是给水一些空间,留一些地方让洪水泛滥,让自然成为自然)”和最后一段“The benefits go beyond that. Stream restoration is neighborhood restoration. The project may promote economic development and increase property values and tax revenue. While the projects can be expensive, they end costly maintenance. Returning to nature is cheaper than maintaining concrete culverts.(好处远不止于此。溪流恢复就是邻里恢复。该项目可以促进经济发展,增加财产价值和税收收入。虽然这些项目可能很昂贵,但它们终结了昂贵的维护费用。回归自然比维护混凝土涵洞便宜)”可知,文章主要介绍了人们改变治理约旦河的方法——将原来掩埋的河流挖开,以及该办法带来的好处,D项“让地下水道“重见光明”,这使城市焕然一新”适合做文章标题,故选D。
    D
We all know there’s good cholesterol (胆固醇) and bad cholesterol. It turns out there’s good and bad fat, too. The good fat is medically known as brown fat. It’s good because it burns calories. The more familiar fat, known as white fat, stores up calories and stubbornly accumulates around waistlines and bottoms.
Scientists have known about brown fat for decades. Small mammals and human infants (婴儿) have deposits of it around their shoulder blades. It generates heat and helps maintain the body’s core temperature. Recently, three studies in the New England Journal of Medicine suggest that brown fat — which becomes gradually less with age — might serve as a whole new way to help people lose weight. “We calculate that if you had three ounces’ worth of brown fat, that would be enough to burn up 400 to 500 calories per day,” says Dr. Aaron Cypess, an author of one of the new studies.
The new studies, which come from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, studied brown fat activity in 24 healthy young men — 10 of them lean (瘦且健康的) and the others overweight. Study subjects spent two hours in a mildly chilly room — 16.1 °C. Then they underwent PET scans and CT scans to measure the location and metabolic (新陈代谢的) activity of brown fat deposits. Brown fat showed up as “hot spots” in the scans of 23 out of the 24 volunteers. The one with no detectable brown fat was the most obese.
The researchers also found that exposure to chilly temperatures caused an increase in the metabolic rate of brown fat in their healthy adult volunteers. They figure that if a way can be found to activate the typical person’s stores of brown fat, it will burn off at least 9 pounds of regular white fat a year. Sitting at home at 16 °C may be a simple way to achieve that and other candidate targets are already known.
    32. Who may have the most brown fat according to the text?
    A. An energetic teenager. B. A middle-aged man.
    C. A lovely baby. D. An old woman.
    33. Which statement will Dr. Aaron Cypess probably agree with?
    A. It doesn’t take much brown fat to burn calories.
    B. People are supposed to focus on losing weight.
    C. White fat mainly accumulates around shoulder blades.
    D. Small mammals take advantage of brown fat to beat heat.
    34. What do the studies mentioned in paragraph 3 show?
    A. Young men prefer brown fat to white fat.
    B. People become overweight for lack of brown fat.
    C. The location of brown fat deposits is hard to measure.
    D. Obese people may have less brown fat than lean people.
    35. What will be talked about in the next paragraph?
    A. Benefits of staying in freezing rooms. B. Ways of activating stores of brown fat.
    C. Targets of keeping a healthy weight. D. Risks of eating too much heavy food.

I started my love of laundry (洗衣) even before 3. I spent hours staring at the clothes circling in the washing machine. The love deepened as I grew older. I learned how to wash and dry before I was ten. 36 At the university, I sought out if I could wash my dry-clean-only myself.
What I learned from laundry were not just the how-tos. 37 When the clothes are clean, smell wonderful, and look great, your loved ones are going to feel as if their days are going to be all the brighter. That’s true for you and your clothes as well. With the following basic rules, you’ll be on your way.
RULE 1: Wash everything in warm water.
38 Yes, your darks. Yes, even your delicates. Don’t worry — warm water will not fade (褪色) or shrink your clothes. Most wash cycles include four steps: the wash, the rest, the rinse (漂洗), and the spin. Only the wash stage uses warm water, meaning that your clothes will be in warm water for only eight or so minutes — just long enough to get them clean but never so long as to do them harm.
    RULE 2: 39
One of my fondest childhood memories is keeping Granny company as she hung up laundry in the bright sunshine. It was my duty to hand her laundry pins (夹子). Late in the afternoon, we’d return to fold each piece and drop it into the basket. I remember her enjoying the process, and so did I.
You might not have time to hang up every load of your wash. But you may want to consider line-drying some of your things. It’ll save energy and your clothes. 40
    A. I do mean everything.
    B. Sort your laundry wisely.
    C. Plus, they’ll smell like sunshine.
    D. Offer a hand whenever necessary.
    E. Try to line dry, at least sometimes.
    F. In my teens, I taught myself to iron my uniforms.
    G. Caring for clothes is also a way to experience and express love.
F37. G38. A39. E40. C
根据空格前的句子“I started my love of laundry (洗衣) even before 3. I spent hours staring at the clothes circling in the washing machine. The love deepened as I grew older. I learned how to wash and dry before I was ten.”(我在3岁之前就开始喜欢洗衣服了。
G项“Caring for clothes is also a way to experience and express love.”(料理衣服也是一种体验和表达爱的方式)正好说的是料理衣服可以让我们体验和表达爱。
Yes, even your delicates. Don’t worry——warm water will not fade or shrink your clothes.”(是的,你的黑色衣服。 故选A项。
空格处是该部分的主题句,下文的内容“One of my fondest childhood memories is keeping Granny company as she hung up laundry in the bright sunshine. It was my duty to hand her laundry pins (夹子). Late in the afternoon, we’d return to fold each piece and drop it into the basket. I remember her enjoying the process, and so did I.”(我最美好的童年记忆之一就是陪着奶奶在明媚的阳光下晾衣服。 所以,把E项“Try to line dry, at least sometimes.”(尽量把衣服晾干,至少有时候)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选E项。
空格前的句子“You might not have time to hang up every load of your wash. But you may want to consider line-drying some of your things. It’ll save energy and your clothes.”(你可能没有时间把每一件衣服都挂起来。

    Live Lightly & Give Generously
Our school held a meaningful activity last week, whose theme was “Live Lightly &. Give Generously”. The event took place on Friday on the playground.
The main activities of the event included a charity auction, where students could donate items to sell and have the money donated to a local charity organization, and a sharing session, where students shared their experiences and insights on how to live a simple yet meaningful life.

It was my first time to ski and I had been persuaded to come along with a group of friends who had booked a hotel for us all. Everyone else there had at least some experience of skiing in the past and all throughout the flight to Geneva they were talking funny stories about past trips to towns and villages I hadn’t even heard of.
While I knew I was in for a really good time, a little part of me was wondering whether I had made a mistake by joining such experienced skiers for a week in the Alps(阿尔卑斯山), when I had never even had a single skiing lesson on proper snow, that is to say real snow.
We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and my training lessons didn’t start until the following morning. There was no way that I was going to stay behind and watch everyone else go out to enjoy the slopes(斜坡)without me, so I grabbed my stuff and headed out with the rest of them. Harriet, a member of our group, took pity on me and offered to pair up, giving me some tips on how to get started.
I had been planning hitting the ski track for months and now I arrived and I was about to feel the rush. The excitement started to spread. But on this occasion, it really was my first outing, and I was seriously nervous. I always loved snow, I loved throwing snowballs with my friends as a kid. but now I felt I was out of my comfort zone and, after I equipped myself, I was shaking all over nervously.
I tried to go forward. For all of about ten meters, I fell to the ground again and again. My instructor, Paul, was near and he was trying too hard not to laugh. I was feeling a little bit ashamed. Again to my feet, again to the ground.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2, 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】One possible version:
And the pattern continued until finally I caught my balance. How excited I was! However, I didn’t dare to move in the slightest for fear that my run would come to a sudden end. From a few feet behind, Harriet and Paul were shouting something cheering, trying to encourage me. Then I moved a little, I probably only covered a small distance of several meters but how amazing it was. Whenever I was at a loss what to do in practice, my only resort would be recreating that feeling—my love for snow. “Whatever happens in my training over the coming week,” I said to myself, “I will try my best!”
With proper lessons the following days, I improved quickly. I had a really good progressing time with the other beginners with the help of Paul, a really patient teacher. But, of course, I was impatient to join my friends on the more daring runs they were telling me about over dinner in the hotel each evening. They just listened to me with smiles, wishing me to join them as soon as possible. On my last lesson, I was told by Paul that I could join them that day. Wow! It was my time to show!
