I can look out of the window as it twists and turns itself through neighborhoods with the sun casting its strong lighting on the floor of the train car. I sometimes get lost in thought while following the light. But the reason I love this ride is that it’s a reminder of how neighborhoods can change from block to block. For almost a year now I have been riding this train as I head into the office where I work as a reporter for a local magazine. I am one of 13 journalists who help report community news in areas that are often forgotten. And for me, that means covering areas like the one I grew up in.Last week, as I was on the way to my office, I started wondering how neighborhoods have changed since the 2008 housing crisis. I searched addresses on the city’s southwest side, a neighborhood that has seen a significant number of residential homes pulled down, I scanned the street views recorded on my phone and saw how the neighborhood looked in 2007. Then I set out to visit the city block, and that’s when I met 3-year-old Harmony.Harmony loved collecting rocks for me to hold as I walked down the street with her mother, Marquita. I already knew what the neighborhood looked like in the past, but Marquita shared more details of the people who once lived on her block, who were really friendly to each other. However, people today in the neighborhood are busy with life and seldom say hello to each other. Marquita has lived on this block her entire life, and Harmony has for most of her short life as well. But the neighborhood that Marquita grew up in will be one obviously different than the one Harmony will grow to know.In the end, they smiled at my camera. And then I got back on the train and headed’back to the office to tell their stories.4What makes the author love his train ride to work?ABeing lost in thought.BAdmiring the outside views.CEnjoying the warm sunshine.DKnowing the change of blocks.5How did the author find out what the city’s southwest side looked like in the past?ABy reading earlier reports.BBy interviewing local people.CBy watching past street views.DBy searching his memories.6How might Marquita feel when she talked with the author?ASad. BNervous.CTouched. DConfused.7What is the main purpose of the text?ATo share a pleasant train ride with us.BTo tell us the work of a news reporter.CTo show us a crowded community.DTo introduce a new neighborhood.C(新鲜科技类说明文)Cities are difficult to navigate (导航) at the best of times, but for people with disabilities they can be like courses with hurdles and bring inconvenience to disabled people.A UK national travel survey found that adults with mobility difficulties took 39% fewer trips than those with no disability in 2017. Yet that could change as devices and cities grow smarter. Assistive tech is playing a big role in the transformation. The global value of the industry is expected to increase from $14 billion in 2015 to $30.8 billion in 2024, according to Zion Market Research. One of the things that could transform lives is a smart walking stick designed by engineers from Young Guru Academy (YGA) in Turkey. The WeWalk stick has a sensor that detects hurdles above chest level and uses vibrations (振动) to warn the user. It can be paired with a smartphone to help navigation, and is connected with a voice assistant and Google Maps.Ceylan, who has been blind since birth, says that connecting the stick to the Internet of Things and smart city solutions makes it user-friendly. “As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station I don’t know which is my exit ... I don’t know which bus is approaching ... which stores are around me. That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk,” he says.“The smart walking stick is really an exciting initiative that will make a huge difference to some people,” says Anna Lawson, the director of the Center for Disability Studies at Leeds University in the United Kingdom. “But they are very expensive ... they’re not going to be available to the vast majority of disabled people,” she added.Bryan Matthews, a lecturer at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, shares the concerns about cost. He says there should also be a focus on inclusive design, and anything that helps people navigate their environment is positive.8What does “that” in the second paragraph refer to?AThe survey that compared adults’ mobility.BThe smart industry that is booming.CThe fact that the disabled traveled less.DThe role that the assistive tech plays.9What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?AThe working principles of the WeWalk stick.BThe introduction of the WeWalk stick inventors.CThe transformation caused by the WeWalk stick.DThe benefits brought about by the WeWalk stick.10What’s the purpose of quoting Ceylan?ATo show the value of smart tech.BTo urge more attention to the blind.CTo increase the potential market share.DTo encourage tech research and development.11What is the disadvantage of the WeWalk stick?AConfusing instructions. BPoor navigation.CInclusive designs. DHigh prices.D宇宙探索-议论文Around the country and around the world, there is no shortage of human suffering. Poverty, disease, violence, hurricanes, wildfire and more are constantly troubling humanity, and even our best efforts thus far can’t address all of everybody’s needs. Many are looking for places to cut funding, and one of the first places that comes up in conversation is excessive spending on space exploration. What good is it to conduct microgravity experiments repeatedly when children are starving? Why launch so many space-related projects when nuclear war threatens our planet? This is a line of thinking that has been coming up throughout history. Yes, it’s short-sighted, in that it fails to recognize that our greatest problems require long-term investment, and that society’s greatest advances come about through hard work, research, development of decades after that is made. Investing in science is investing in the betterment of humanity.Over these years, much of the results of the space research have been adapted to be applicable to our daily lives. For example, NASA’s advancements in the areas of robotics have given manufacturers an additional basis for the development of more advanced artificial limbs. Additionally, certain nutritional enrichment ingredients that were developed by NASA have been integrated into baby food formula.Space technology has also helped improve economies. Within the next three years, the space exploration and space tourism industry are expected to be valued at 3 trillion USDIt is true that for every dollar we spend on the space program, the US economy receives about $8 of economic benefit. Space exploration can also serve as amotivation for children to enter the fields of science and engineering. To many people, the idea of space travel may still seem far from practical. However, I believe that it is important that we keep going forward or we’ll risk delaying further discoveries and technological advancements that will be beneficial for us.12According to paragraph 1, what do some people think of space exploration?AUseless. BWasteful.CBeneficial. DHarmful.13What does the underlined word “that” in the second paragraph refer to?AThe advance. BThe development.CThe investment. DThe problem.14How does NASA’s advancements contribute to the development of artificial limbs?ABy providing a foundation.BBy adding certain materials.CBy acting as a driving force.DBy helping realize the mass production.15What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?AThe payback of space programs is very high.BSpace travel appears to be within people’s reach.CMore and more children are interested in science.DNew technological discoveries have been delayed. 参考答案CAB DCAB CAAD BCAA
