Instead of the traditional gown, he wears a suit while telling modern stories. Yang also borrows many pop elements(元素)like tap dance, ballet, jazz dance and the rhythms of popular music. David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world's first pig heart transplant in January, 2022. He died two months later, on March 9.
It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation(异种器官移植).

Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years, as doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, lung or kidney. Therefore, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories. Usually, patients' bodies reject(排斥)the animal organs. Bennett lived much longer than other xenotransplant patients. That's because scientists removed pig genes(基因)that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
“A lot of new information will come out that will help the field move forward at a faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.
In another xenotransplant success, in 2021, doctors at New York University joined gene-edited pig kidneys to a human patient's blood vessels(血管)outside of the body. Also that year, doctors at the University of Alabama put the gene-edited pig kidneys inside a patient's body.
Though these recent successes were short-lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplants.
    16. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Xenotransplantation. B. The world's first heart transplant.
    C. The transplant program. D. The pig heart transplant Bennett received.
    17. Why do scientists focus on xenotransplantation?
    A. Because it can make people live longer.
    B. Because new organs are in short supply.
    C. Because human bodies reject the animal organs.
    D. Because many people die after receiving a new organ.
    18. What made Bennett live much longer than other xenotransplant patients?
    A. The transplanted organ was put outside of his body.
    B. Human genes that would cause fast rejection were removed.
    C. The transplanted heart was gene-edited to avoid fast rejection.
    D. The transplanted organ came from a pig instead of other animals.
    19. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The recent xenotransplantation successes were meaningless.
    B. Over 100,000 patients are waiting for new organs around the world.
    C. Doctors at New York University put pig kidneys inside a patient's body.
    D. Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation for about 100 years.
    20. What do the recent xenotransplantation successes show us?
    A. Xenotransplantation is developing step by step.
    B. Patients receiving xenotransplantation won't die.
    C. Xenotransplantation does harm to people's health.
    D. Xenotransplantation is sure to solve all the problems.

METRO Line 11's business-class carriages, launched June 30, 2017, have come under the spotlight after some passengers complained about squeezing into crowded carriages during rush hours, while the business carriages often appear empty.
While some citizens believe that the carriages should be canceled because of low utilization rates(利用率), others argue that they are practical for people with special needs and that there should be different choices available to meet the needs of different groups.
Line 11, which runs from Gangxia North in Futian District to Bitou in Bao'an District, serves as an important transportation choice for many migrant workers commuting(通勤)between central Shenzhen and the northwestern part of the city. Unfortunately, because of the long waiting times between trains and a limited number of carriages, overcrowding has become a big problem during rush hours.
In response to commuters' complaints, a new train operation schedule was carried out on Line 11 on March 6, 2023, with the departure interval(发车间隔)of trains running between 7:50and 9a. m. during morning rush hours reduced to five minutes 30 seconds and the transport capacity(运输力)increased by 27.2%. The departure time of the first and last trains on Line 11 has also been brought forward or put off as part of the optimization measures(优化措施)
In addition, Shenzhen Metro Group has opened the line's business carriages for free during morning rush hours from 8 to 9a. m. and evening rush hours from 6 to 7 p. m. However, some commuters have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the new measure. Now passengers can only get on a business carriage at Gangxia North and Futian stations during morning rush hours.

    D. To present low utilization rates of the business-class carriages.
    23. What can we know about Line 11 from Paragraph 3?
    A. Line 11 has many long large carriages.
    B. Line 11 is overcrowded during rush hours.
    C. Line 11 is important for all migrant workers.
    D. Line 11 runs from Yantian District to Bao'an District.
    24. What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs?
    A. The transport capacity has been increased.
    B. The departure interval of trains has been reduced.
    C. New optimization measures have been carried out.

    F. Pizzas were cut to meet the customers' needs.
There are not many nations that can say their national dish has become international. 26 Both are famous all over the world, and both have made the history of Italian food. People have been eating pizza, in one form or another, for centuries. They eat it everywhere-at home, in restaurants, or on street corners.
27 Long ago, pieces of flatbread, topped with mushrooms and herbs(香料), were a simple and tasty meal. They were mostly for those who didn't have enough money to buy plates, or who were on the go. In the 18th century, Naples, in southern Italy, had become one of the largest cities in Europe, and it was growing fast. Lots of city people were poor and they were always rushing around to look for work. They needed food that was cheap and easy to eat. 28 They were inexpensive, used easy-to-find ingredients(原料), and could be made with plenty of tastes.

It was in America that pizza found its second home. In 1905, the first pizzeria(披萨店), Lombardi's, was opened in New York City. 29 It was increasingly considered as a fast, funny food. People might like New York-style thin pizza, or Chicago deep-dish thick pizza. Some want extra cheese on their pizzas while others only like vegetables. 30
For a lot of people in western countries, when they cannot decide what to eat, they order pizzas.

It happened in a New York classroom. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Engler came face to face with a cow. But it was all in her head.

The renovation (翻新) of the Fisherman’s Wharf started in April 2018, in order to turn the wharf into an entertainment, a cultural exchange, education, tourism and housing complex (综合体).

Chen also proposed no longer allowing commercial ships to dock at the wharf unless they are sheltering from a typhoon. He suggested the berthing sites (靠泊点) be moved to Humen in Dongguan City, Aotou in Huizhou City and Fuyong in Bao’an District because the wharf’s water has poor self-purification capabilities.

    Tech helps sort our trash

“Which is the right bin for my garbage(垃圾)?” This may be the most-asked question in Shanghai since it started a new garbage sorting(垃圾分类)program on July 1, 2019. When learning about the four types of garbage—wet, dry, recyclable and harmful—many people might be confused about how to properly sort it.
To help people figure this out, China’s tech companies are giving a hand. For example, if you want to know which bin your wet wipes(湿巾)should go in, you can just open a mini app in Wechat or Alipay and look for “wet wipes”. The app will give you the answer right away. Soon, you might do it in an easier way. Maybe you can just take a photo of the garbage and then be told where it should go.
This kind of technology is called image recognition(图像识别). It uses artificial intelligence(AI,人工智能)that uses this technology. For example, AMP Robotics in the US has made a robot that can sort food and drink packages(包装). By “seeing” pictures on the packaging, the robot will pick up the trash and put it in the right place.

    Whales will live on

It’s sad to learn that a whale has died in the ocean. However, that’s not the end for the whale. It has a lot to give to other sea animals after death.
When a whale dies, it quickly sinks(下沉)to the bottom of the ocean floor. There, the whale carcass(尸体)provides food and nutrients(营养)to deep-sea animals, which are often starved(饥饿的)for food. The remains can last for decades and create a complex(复杂的)ecosystem(生态系统)called a whale fall—an “oasis” of life in the deep sea.
Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the first time in the South China Sea during a deep-sea expedition(考察)carried out by oceanic research vessel(舰)Tansuo-1, which finished its expedition on April 2, 2020. Tansuo-1 carried the manned submersible(潜水器)Shenhai Yongshi, which is able to dive to a depth of 4,500 meters.
The whale fall ecosystem can exist in the deep ocean because great pressure and cold temperatures there prevent the body from decomposing(分解)too quickly. But the depth also makes it hard for scientists to discoverthem. There are less than 50 known whale falls in the world.
The whale fall in the South China Sea is about three meters long. Scientists have found several species(物种)of shrimp(虾)and fish near the whale fall. Some fish have started to eat the whale’s tail. The whale fall might be quite recent and needs long-term observation(观察), according to Xie Wei, a scientist who took part in the expedition.
By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how marine(海洋的)ecosystems support life and how to protect biodiversity(生物多样性)resources in the deep sea.
21.What does the underlined word “oasis” mean in the second paragraph?
A.A nice place for sea animals to play happily.
B.A pleasant place for deep-sea animals to support life.
C.A huge hall for sea animals to stay comfortably.
D.A place with different plants for deep-sea animals.
22.Which statement is TRUE about the whale fall?
A.Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the second time in the South China Sea.
B.It is very easy for scientists to find the whale falls in the deep sea.
C.The scientists will continue observing the whale fall found in the South China Sea.
D.Chinese scientists have found more than 50 whale falls by now.
23.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A.The whales. B.The scientists. C.The deep-sea animals. D.The whale falls.
24.Why do scientists study the whale fall?
A.To find what will happen after a whale dies in the sea.
B.To find more species of shrimps and fishes in the deep sea.
C.To know the sea better and try to protect it in a better way.
D.To save the whales because there are only 50 whales now.
25.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A whale fall discovered in the South China Sea.
B.Whale falls existing in the whole world.
C.Marine ecosystems supporting the life in the sea.
D.Biodiversity resources in the deep sea.
