With low temperatures and lack of food, winter is a harsh season for animals. Many animals enter hibernation(冬眠) to get through it. Their metabolism(新陈代谢) will slow to less than a quarter of its normal rate. This cools the body and slows its heartbeat to just a few times every minute, for up to months at a time.
But why don’t humans hibernate? Our body is not designed for hibernation. For example, waste management(代谢废物处理) is a huge challenge. Animals that are only in hibernation are able to essentially stop their urination(排尿) and defecation(排便). Unfortunately, humans can’t do this. And there are other challenges. Body temperatures below 2.8℃ tend to disrupt(扰乱) the human digestive tract(消化道) and may cause pain. Cold temperatures can also suppress(抑制) the immune(免疫) system, making people easier to infections.
In fact, humans don’t need to sleep through winter. We have discovered fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and agriculture, all of which are much more effective ways of surviving the cold.
Could humans hibernate in the future? For long distance space travel, it’s likely. If we hope to visit another star system, even if we could travel at the speed of light, the journey would take years. Being able to hibernate would make such distances much less boring for the astronauts(宇航员) and save important resources.
26. How do many animals in the wild survive in winter?
A. By making a fire. B. By entering hibernation. C. By living in the shelters.
27. What will NOT happen when an animal enters hibernation?
A. Its metabolism will get slower.
B. Its body temperature will be higher to keep warm.
C. Its heart will beat slower than usual.
28. What challenges are there if human body temperatures are below 2.8℃?
① The digestive tract will be disrupted and be painful.
② The immune system will be suppressed.
③ People will get infected easily.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①②③
29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. All animals are able to essentially stop their urination and defecation if they need.
B. Humans have a lot of ways to survive the cold, so we don’t need hibernation.
C. It will take some years if we travel to another star system.
30. What can we infer(推断) from the last paragraph(段落)?
A. There is no way for humans to realize hibernation.
B. Scientists are trying hard to make humans hibernation come true.
C. Hibernation will be helpful for humans to travel in the space.
D
Chinese astronauts(宇航员) gave a science lecture(讲座) 250 miles above Earth to millions of students on December 9, 2021, as they orbited(环绕) in the Tiangong space station.
Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, all members of the Shenzhou XIII mission crew(任务组员), showed students, teachers and other audiences how they live and work inside the space station. The astronauts showed their exercise equipment(设备) and a specially designed space suit(航天服), and conducted demonstrations on physical phenomena(物理现象) in micro-gravity(失重力), such as “disappearing buoyancy” and a “water ball”. Ye, who is on his first spaceflight, showed how he moved his body in the weightless environment. The astronauts also answered questions from students during the lecture.
The three astronauts went into space on October 16. The hour-long televised event was hosted by the China Manned Space Agency, the Ministry of Education and other government departments. It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, China’s first extra-terrestrial lecture series to popularize space science. But for Wang, it is the second time to engage in a space lecture. During the Shenzhou X mission in June 2013, she carried out the nation’s first space-based lecture inside an experimental space station module to more than 60 million Chinese students.
After watching the lecture, Shi Yi, deputy head of teaching and a physics teacher at the Beijing No.101 Middle School, said the space lecture was an eye-opening experience that would ignite students’ interest in science.
Wang Yihan, a fifth-grade student at the Yuxin School, said, “The astronauts’ experiments(实验) really surprised me. I have great interest in spaceflight and would like to take part in our country’s space exploration programme in the future.”
31. According to the passage, what we CANNOT see in the lecture on December 9?
A. How astronauts work outside the space station.

As we all know, recycling is good for our environment. However, some surveys show that many people still don’t recycle anything at all. 36. __________________
37. __________________ Putting something in a recycling bin is as easy as putting it in a rubbish bin. If you don’t have a recycling bin at home or at work, just get one!
Many resources(资源) will be used up one day. Many of the resources that are used to make things now cannot be used endlessly. For example, making plastic requires oil. 38. __________________The sooner we can use renewable energy resources, the better.
Recycling can help you save money. 39. __________________ In most states in America, it’s actually more expensive to get rid of(处理) waste than to recycle. Some recycling companies buy wastes from neighborhoods for their recycling activities.
Everyone can make a difference. If you think that it makes no difference whether you recycle or not, think again! More than half of the waste that each of us creates each year can be recycled, but a lot of it ends up being buried. 40. __________________After all, many hands make light work.

B. It’s rather easy for us to recycle things.

第三节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacation, you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Riesa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.
41. Can kids have full-time jobs at the age of 17 in the United States?
42. When can a 15-year-old kid work to earn money?
43. How does Valerie make money?
44. Who makes money by drawing pictures for people?
45. According to the passage, what skill can kids learn while earning money?

After their father’s death, Mary and Joseph continued fossil hunting to 49 the family. When Mary was 12, they found a strange 5.2-meter-long skeleton(骨骼)! At her time, scientists simply thought it belonged 50 a crocodile(鳄鱼). Later, they realized it was an ancient animal named Ichthyosaurus (鱼龙).
After teaching herself geology(地质学) and anatomy(解剖学), she became so highly skilled. In 1823, Mary made another important discovery—the first Plesiosaur(蛇颈龙) skeleton! This sea animal with a long neck looked so 51 that many people thought it was fake(假的) at first. Many other exciting discoveries, such as a flying dinosaur, helped her 52 what dinosaurs ate!
