Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into beautiful shapes. During the 20th century, Japanese artist Akira Yoshizawa helped to raise the old art of paper-folding from a skill to an art form(形式) and made it known to the world. Although origami is not an important art form in China, it has interested many young artists like Pei Haozheng.
Pei started folding paper when he was young. At first, he learned folding from his teachers and parents. Later he taught himself through origami books. He was so interested in the “magic world made by paper” that he spent hours folding paper every day.
A piece of paper, in Pei’s eyes, has many different possibilities. He can fold it into anything. “Origami works are always creative because they are made by folding a piece of paper without scissors or glue,” he says.
Pei has finished hundreds of wonderful works. Most of them are his own ideas. He won the international Origami Internet Olympiad in 2017. Russian origami artist Andrey Ermakov started the event in 2011. Many artists all over the world see it as the final challenge to show their origami skills. Pei’s work Bailuyuan became the symbol of the event in 2018.
The 26-year-old artist set up his own workshop in Nanjing. He hopes to tell the Chinese story through his works. It is good to see that more people are interested in the art form, but only those with a real love for origami will make it into a lifelong job. Pei is such a person.

It might be strange to wear clothes made from plastic(塑料的) bottles. But in fact, clothing company JUMA is making clothes like these.
Recently, JUMA showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items(服饰单品) from the collection, including jumpsuits(连体裤), jackets, shirts and dresses, were made from plastic bottles.
“We realized that billions of water bottles were being thrown into landfills(垃圾填埋场) and oceans every year and that these bottles take hundreds of years to decompose(分解). We thought we should use them to create our clothes and help the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s design director.
The process is very simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(熔化) and shaped into small balls. After that, the balls are melted again. In this way, people can get thread(线).
According to Juma, it takes 67,000 bottles to make 1 ton(吨) of thread. This reduces carbon emissions(碳排放) by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making thread. That’s why the new way of making thread is environmentally friendly.
“Four bottles can make one pillowcase. Five bottles can make a shirt, 10 a dress and 20 a short coat,” Juma said. Some people might have doubts(怀疑) about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But according to a website called Causeartist, clothes made from plastics could be even better than nylon(尼龙) and polyester(聚酯纤维). It seems that clothes made from plastics may lead to a greener future of fashion industry(时装业).
