ChatGPT is back in the headlines. Open Al, the company behind the popular chatbot has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4
On March 14. GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than GPT- 3. 5. One of its best new feature is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger(充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4's developments don't stop there. The new language model can code(解码) classic games like Tetris(俄罗斯方块) in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a handmade drawing. It can also change the tone and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4is much better than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3. 5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function(功能). Users can learn language by talking with Al. Another app. Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.
There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes "hallucinates" and it will insist that wrong information is true.
42. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A. GPT-3. 5 can understand pictures as well as GPT-4
B. GPT-4 can code games like Tetris quickly and easily.
C. The writer organized the passage by using many dialogues
D. Teachers are worried because GPT-4 does badly in passing tests
43. Which of the following sentences should go in the empty box in the fourth paragraph?

B. GPT-4 will become the eyes of the blind people.
C. GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services
D. GPT-4 will also help to protect different kinds of languages around the world
44. What does GPT-4 also sometimes "hallucinates" mean in the last paragraph?
A. It couldn't get correct answers before Sept 2021
B. It couldn't tell the past from the present
C. It couldn't change the style based on it is asked to do
D. It couldn't decide whether the information is true or not
45. Which of the following is the best way to divide the passage into three parts?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①②/③④/⑤ C. ①/②③/④⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤

Grandpa moved in with us after Grandma passed away. He came to Canada from China, where he was a well-respected school headmaster.
I, a nine-year-old boy, never spoke much Chinese. Grandpa didn’t speak much English, but we still connected in our own way.
One way we developed our relationship was over a game of Monopoly. He didn’t really understand the rules or much of what my little brother and I said; I don’t think it mattered. He laughed when he landed on our hotels. Or when he pulled a card that read: “GO TO JAIL.” He got a kick to make us happy.
I think of Grandpa when I play the trading card game Yu-Gi-Oh! with my sons. I can’t keep track of all the spells and effects in this game.
Truthfully, I don’t care if I win or lose these games. What matters is spending time with my children and making an effort to understand their interests.
I often think about my kids. At how excitedly they explain rules and how they go easy on their old man. I imagine it’s like how Grandpa felt playing Monopoly with us.
Grandpa went for regular walks. He also spent his days sitting on the couch, looking out of the window and singing quietly. I often thought he was bored. But as I age, I find peace in taking moments to look out of a window. Maybe I got that from him.
What I learned from my grandfather was to enjoy simple pleasures in life. To see the beauty in the colors of the rainbow. To see a single leaf fall from a tree. To play Yu-Gi-Oh! with my sons.

C.To advise older people to learn about kids’ games. D.To remind readers to spend more time with family.
Seven years ago, Joyce Akinpe moved to Australia to start a new life, finding an exciting job in Sydney. After the outbreak (爆发) of COVID-19, she suddenly lost her job.
Seeing that there were many others like herself in trouble from the outbreak, Akinpe and her two roommates, Michele Gomez and Maureen Lee, brainstormed ideas for how to help their local community. They came up with a street pantry(储藏柜). Gomez said the idea was very simple, “Take what you need and leave what you can.”
With the help of Gomez’s father, they built the Blessing Box – a street pantry, with shelves and hanging baskets and two doors made from old furniture.
It sits just at the back of the three girls’ home, so they can look after it. They put some information notices into their neighbors’ mailboxes, and the Blessing Box was quickly filled with the donations (捐赠)from the community, “It is the community’s strong support that keeps the project alive,” Akinpe said.
We now have hundreds of people visiting our box every day. It might only a hours for the box to be full and next hour it might become empty again. “We are now helping others to carry out similar projects in their own communities, too”, Gomez said.
Lee said things in the box were mostly convenience foods, as well as some necessary life things such as spaghetti and toilet paper. “Few people take everything at once. They think there are other people who need them more.” Lee added.

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers(天文学家) have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans were here.
In order to do this, scientists used a method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to decide what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced life would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.
42.How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years?
A.2,034 B.1,715 C.1,396 D.319
43.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.Advanced life. B.The oxygen on Earth. C.Human-made radio waves. D.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
44.What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A.Aliens don’t exist. B.They cannot understand each other.
C.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far. D.It takes a long time for messages to travel.
45.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To raise reader’s interest in Aliens. B.To present new findings published in a study.
C.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars. D.To explain how messages travel between different star systems.

I spent a quiet year on the island. For most of my efforts, I did little more than feed the wild goats with my grain. But finally, I managed to catch several kids and an old male goat. Training the male seemed impossible and any contact with it was dangerous. So, I pushed a log into the trap and it ran out.
The kids I tied with strings were led back to my summer home. I visited regularly, feeding the goats from my hand so that they would not be frightened of me. I got milk from them and I even learned to make cheese.
I also checked on my boat often. I would take the boat out from shore for quick sails sometimes. It was one of these visits to check on my boat that I froze at an impossible sight. There was a footprint in the sand! Clearly, it was from a man. I looked around. I ran across the island, hurrying back to my home. I imagined each tree became another native man running after me. I hid in my home for several days, expecting an attack at any moment.
Finally, I calmed myself enough to give real thought to the footprint. Perhaps I was scaring myself over a print I had made myself. When I reached it, I placed my foot beside it. It was larger than mine in all ways. Perhaps, I told myself, a native from another island had been on the island. I carefully went back home, ready to fight or shoot if I saw anybody.
Still, I built a second wall around my home and cleared the land in front of it. Then I divided my flock so that any visitor could not carry off all of my food supply.
I planned to find another place to keep my goats on the far western part of the island, where I had never been. But when I went to the beach, I was horrified to see human bones lying on the sand. So great was my shock. I ran from here as quickly as I could. I couldn’t believe my good luck!

37.“Good luck” in Paragraph 6 means ________.
A.I found a good place for my goats on the western part of the island
B.I ran from here quickly after I saw human bones on the sand
C.I had been on the island for a long time but I was still alive
D.I succeeded in fighting against a native man on the island
It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-you notes and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play …
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app admiring other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers… In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting me and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary (周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied. “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”On December 31, I wrote my last card to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me.

A.writing thank-you notes B.putting the phone away
C.taking the train back home D.raising money for charity
39.How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina?
A.Shy and surprised. B.Pleased and relaxed.
C.Nervous and excited. D.Moved and encouraged.
40.According to the passage, what can we can infer?
A.The theme of the February notes might be “food”.
B.Gina had more time to admire others’ lives by doing her task.
C.The theme of the December notes might be “family”.
D.Julie was going through a hard time when getting Gina’s letter.
41.The best title for the passage can be ________.
A.An Amazing Trip B.My Thank-You Year

Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel upset. What’s worse, it may cause trouble and lead to negativity(消极). Generally, failure is no fun for most people. However, a lot of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety(焦虑).
It’s hard to change the mindset(心态) of a lifetime. But even if we still can’t get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.
Christy Pennison, a professor, says she works with a growing number of kids and teens who show anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, “We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we often tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children who are experiencing stress think they shouldn’t fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don’t live up to a certain standard, or things don’t go according to the plans, they will feel upset and stressed.”
Pennison argues that failures are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-confidence.
So what can parents do to help their children embrace (拥抱) failure instead of avoiding it at all costs? Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. “This allows children to build confidence in themselves,” she explains. “Paying attention to the effort can encourage children to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset— ‘I’d rather try and fail than not try at all.’—helps them believe in themselves, and expands(拓展) their world of possibilities.” As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters.
42.What do most people focus on when thinking of failure?
A.The great courage to face it. B.The efforts made to deal with it.
C.Unexpected advantage it brings. D.Unpleasant bad results it brings.
43.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2 ?
A.To introduce the main topic. B.To provide some background information.
