On the farm

On the truck

Trucks pick up the fresh milk from farms. The trucks have huge tanks(罐) that keep the milk cold. The trucks take the milk to factories.

In the factory

The milk is separated into cream and skim milk (脱脂乳). Then the cream and milk are put together with sugar and other things. The ice cream mix is heated. This kills germs(病菌). Then the mix is cooled.

A machine whips(搅打) the mix. Then it is time to add flavourings, such as chocolate or vanilla (香草). Fruit, nuts and biscuits can go in too.

The ice cream is cooled again. This time, it becomes very hard. Then, trucks bring the ice cream to shops. Want some ice cream?

My father used to work in the city and seldom stayed at home. But he would come back help to harvest rice every year.

One autumn, he promised to help our neighbor, who lost his arms in a traffic accident in 1999, to harvest his rice. After father harvested our own, his little rice picker broke. What’s worse, he had to return to work the next day because his partner was ill in hospital. It meant that father wouldn't be back in a few days. It now seemed impossible to help out the neighbor.

Father told us that he wouldn't let the neighbor’s rice rot(糜烂）in the field. He decided to harvest it by hand without a machine. “If tonight’s weather is clear, I think I can do it,” added my father. In fact, he was rather tired after a day’s harvest work.

I was a schoolgirl in Grade 7 when Danny came to my school and became one of my classmates. He was handsome with blond hair, so many girls in my class liked him very much. Every day, his parents picked him up in an old car. We all realized he was from a poor family. I had a poor family as well, but I just hid it from everyone. I was afraid the kids in my class would leave me if they knew the truth.

One day, our teacher, Mr. Sims said that we would have a field trip. We decided to go to Disneyland. My classmates were excited. I sat back and looked at them, knowing that my parents did not have the money to send me. To my surprise, Danny stood up and said simply, “I won’t go with you. My dad hurt his back and lost his job. I am not asking my parents for money.”

“Danny, I’m very proud of you for understanding the situation that your parents are in.” Mr. Sims replied. “But the trip is at the end of the month, we have plenty of time to raise money for it.”

While walking home from school that day, I noticed three boys talking with Danny. I was a little worried that they were giving him a hard time. But as I got closer, I found they were only discussing how to raise money for the trip.

By standing up and knowing he was poor, Danny changed my life, I no longer felt I had to lie about my family’s situation. As for Danny, I will remember his courage and honesty forever.
