What is two inches tall, can hang in mid-air, and flies in every direction including backwards? It's not an insect. The answer is the bee hummingbird.
Most hummingbirds are about three to five inches long. But the bee hummingbird is only five centimeters, or about two inches, making it the smallest species of bird alive today. Really it isn't bigger than a large insect. But don't let its tiny body fool you. This bird is a strong flier. It can beat its wings up to 80 times per second. If you ever see one in flight, you'll notice its wings are just a blur to the human eye. Hummingbirds are also the only vertebrates(脊椎动物)that can hover in one place. Add to that being able to fly backwards and upside down, and these creatures are amazing flying machines.
And being a master flier isn't the only one of the bee hummingbird's talents. The bee hummingbird does a great job performing its part in plant reproduction(繁衍). During the course of a single day, the bee hummingbird can visit up to 1, 500 flowers. And just like a bee, when the bee hummingbird drinks nectar from the flowers, pollen(花粉)is moved from the flower to the bird's body. This pollen is carried to the next flower. Moving pollen from one flower to another helps plants make seeds.
Besides drinking nectar, bee hummingbirds eat insects. In fact, they eat about half their bodyweight each day. But what's more impressive is that they drink eight times their body weight every day. This is why they live in areas where there are gardens and forests. These tiny birds are found mainly in Cuba, but some have been seen in Jamaica and Haiti as well.
Except for its size, there's no doubt that the bee hummingbird is a powerful flier.
    29. What is true about bee hummingbirds?
    A. They all live in Cuba.
    B. They cannot fly upside down.
    C. They are three to five inches long.
    D. They may be as small as some insects.
    30. How do bee hummingbirds help flowering plants?
    A. They drink pollen in the flowers.
    B. They give the flowering plants energy.
    C. They build their nests in flowering plants.
    D. They help flowering plants make seeds and reproduce.
    31. If a bee hummingbird weighs 2 grams, how many grams will it drink in a day?
    A. 1 gram B. 2 grams C. 8 grams D. 16 grams
    32. Where is the passage most probably from?
    A. A story book B. A literary novel. C. A science magazine D. A tourist guide
    C
    Friendship
"Give me a dollar and I'll be your best friend.
"Madeline smiled as she said that to me.
She was so pretty and so popular
With shiny brown hair and a confident smile.
I thought, "Everyone wants to be Madeline's friend.

I needed a friend, and she was the best!

My uncle had given me birthday money,
Crisp, new bills I was saving
For a playhouse my father would build
With a door and three windows—I could see it already—

But I needed a friend, and here was my chance

That's when it hit me, the shame and the tears
Which I couldn't cry, or the whole school would know
How low I would go, that I needed a friend
There she was laughing at me with her buddies
If only the ground would swallow me up!

    Luckily, summer was coming soon
I wouldn't see any of them till the fall
Even the worst times come to an end, And this year I made a new friend who
Likes me for me: still shy, kind of awkward,
Not good at sports, but sometimes funny

In ancient times, people tried to explain the world around them based on what they saw. People in ancient times saw that the sun came up from one side of the earth, moved across the sky and went down to the other side. Based on this observation, they believed that the sun travels around the earth. Going directly from observation to conclusion is called non-scientific thinking.
Here is an example of non-scientific thinking. Maybe you had a sick stomach, and ate a candy bar. An hour later, you found that you felt much better. You might conclude that it was the candy bar that made you feel better. But there are other possible reasons for the observation. Maybe you had taken some medicine an hour earlier, and it took a while to work. Maybe enough time had passed, and you would have felt better without eating the candy bar. Non-scientific thinking happens all the time.
The scientific method is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid making incorrect conclusions. It helps you to avoid non-scientific thinking. It reminds you to treat your first conclusion as one of several possible conclusions. It reminds you to gather evidence(证据)to support your conclusion. The four steps in the scientific method begin by questioning an observation, and end with a conclusion that is based on evidence. First, you can ask a question about your observation, such as, “What makes a sick stomach feel better?” Second, state a possible answer to the question, such as, “A candy bar makes a sick stomach feel better.” Third, test your guess, this can be done in many different ways. You could wait until you have a sick stomach again, eat a candy bar, and see what happens. Finally, think and conclude—think about what happened when you tested and you can make a conclusion.
32.The underlined word “observation” in Paragraph 1 means “________”.
    A.watching carefully B.giving examples C.guessing quickly D.making conclusions
33.The purpose of the example in the second paragraph is to ________.
A.ask readers to take some medicine as early as they can

D.conclude that eating a candy bar can make people feel better

    A.what makes non-scientific thinking

35.The text is most probably taken from ________.

Dennis didn’t feel like sleeping. He had gone to bed at the same time every night for as long as he could remember. He was tired of going to bed when his parents told him to. So one night, when fall seemed over, but it wasn’t yet winter, he decided he would stay up!
What Dennis didn’t realize is that staying awake at night is hard when your body needs to sleep. He tried everything he could think of to stop himself from falling asleep. He tried counting wolves(if counting sheep makes you sleepy, then counting wolves must surely do the opposite), but unfortunately it made him even more tired. He started to suspect that it was the counting, and not the choice of animal, that made people sleepy.
Dennis was just about ready to give up when he heard a squeak(吱吱叫)from his hamster(仓鼠)Charlie. He went over to Charlie’s cage, but it was empty. Dennis followed the sounds of squeaking until he found Charlie on the floor, looking behind the door. Dennis noticed that something back there was throwing things at Charlie! Coins, balls of paper, and even some stones were flying in Charlie’s direction, as he squeaked.
“What’s there, Charlie?” Dennis asked as he picked up the hamster and walked towards the door.
What he saw made him wonder if he had actually fallen asleep and not realized it.
“It’s a…it’s a rabbit!” he said. No bigger than Charlie(and no smaller), the rabbit wore a yellow shirt, a tiny pair of green pants, and a hat.
“Why are you throwing things at my hamster, rabbit?” asked Dennis.
“Why do you keep a vicious(凶猛的)hamster as a pet, human?” asked the rabbit. “Charlie is not vicious! More importantly, why are you in my room, rabbit?” asked Dennis. “That is an interesting question, human.”
“My name is not ‘human’, it’s Dennis.” Dennis said angrily. “I already know your name. And rabbits have names too!”
Dennis didn’t say anything for a moment, and neither did the rabbit. It was an awkward(尴尬的)silence for everyone except Charlie who, as usual, had fallen asleep shortly after Dennis picked him up.
“Well, what is your name then?” asked Dennis.
36.When did the story take place?
A.One night in late auturnn. B.One late afternoon in summer.
C.One afternoon in early spring. D.One early morning in winter.
37.Why does the writer uses the punctuation mark “…” in the sentence “It’s a…it’s a rabbit!”?
A.To show his certainty of this subject. B.To hide his limited knowledge in animals.
C.To express Dennis’ surprise at the rabbit. D.To display Dennis’ worry about his hamster.
38.Which is the right order of the following events?
    a. Dennis heard the sounds of squeaking.
    b. The rabbit threw balls of paper at Charlie.
    c. Dennis tried to count wolves to stay awake.
    d. Charlie fell asleep shortly after Dennis picked him up.
    A.c-d-a-b B.d-a-c-b C.d-c-a-b D.c-b-a-d
39.What is the best title for the story?
A.Dennis’ lovely hamster B.Ways to stay up late
C.Dennis’ unusual night D.Advice on falling asleep
40.According to the last paragraph, what would most probably happen next?
A.The rabbit would run away at once. B.The rabbit would tell Dennis his name.
C.The rabbit would throw things at Dennis. D.The rabbit would fall asleep with Dennis.

Prince Philip got into a car accident. He hit another car with a passenger and a baby onboard. Days after the accident, the victim complained that she still hadn’t heard any sort of apology from the Royals (英国王室成员). Finally, Prince Philip did his part to make things right. He sent the woman, Emma Fairweather, a letter of apology:
    Dear Mrs. Fairweather,
I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident at the Babingley cross-roads.
I have been across that crossing any number of times and I know very well the amount of traffic that uses that main road. It was a bright sunny day and at about three in the afternoon, the sun was low over the Wash. In other words, the sun was shining low over the main road. In normal conditions, I would have no difficulty in seeing traffic coming from the Dersingham direction, but I can only imagine that I failed to see the car coming and I am very sorry about the consequences (结果).
I was somewhat shaken after the accident, but I was greatly relieved that none of you were seriously injured. As a crowd was beginning to gather, I was advised to return to Sandringham House by a local Police Officer. I have since learned that you suffered a broken arm. I am deeply sorry about this injury.

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress. This experience is often called “culture shock”. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with it if you want to adapt (适应) successfully to your new home’s culture.
Generally speaking, there are four stages you will experience if you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually referred to as (被称为) the excitement stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture; everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it isn’t long before the excitement stage moves into the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to stress. It seems that everything is difficult; the language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel frustrated (沮丧) and homesick. This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”.
However, culture shock doesn’t last very long. If you are one of those who manage to overcome it, you’ll move into the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home, and prefer certain aspects of the new culture to your own culture.
Culture shock is normal. Everyone in a new situation will go through some form of it. Be brave, and overcoming culture shock is a piece of cake.
    32.What is called “culture shock”?
A.Stresses when one is travelling or living abroad.
B.A simple stage when one begins a new life in a different place.
C.An experience of feeling homesick and stressful when one enters a different culture.
D.A homesick feeling when one finds it hard to take on some challenges in a foreign country.
33.During the “home” stage, you like ________.
A.both your own culture and the new culture
B.your own culture better than the new culture
C.some of the new culture better than your own culture
D.each part of the new culture better than your own culture
34.The stages of culture shock are ________.
    A.culture shock→excitement→recovery→home
    B.excitement→culture shock→recovery→home
    C.culture shock→excitement→home→recovery
    D.excitement→culture shock→home→recovery
35.The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
    A.tell us about culture shock
B.show that culture shock is unusual
C.advise us to accept different things
D.encourage us to be brave in a new situation

A new school has opened recently. For an hour, pupils are taught how to use the mouse, the keyboard and the computer. Nothing unusual about that, you might think; except that these pupils are toddlers, ages just two or three.
We asked two experts their opinions on the growing phenomenon (现象) of “technology for toddlers”: Do you think we should teach computer skills to very young children?
    •YES
Judy Clarke, director of technology, York College
At my college, we think that “ ________.” Although the usual age for the national school exams is 16, we put our best pupils forward for exams if we think they are ready. They might be just seven years old. Having had great success with these courses, we began to think about the “Technology for Toddlers” classes. They are aimed at giving the pre-school pupils a head start not only in technology skills, but also in writing, reading and communication using the computer. Apart from the actual lessons, we also encourage parents to get the children to practise their new skills at home. Parents say to me all the time, “Sarah can count up to 30 and is ahead of her peers” or “Jack has gained so much confidence from your classes.” Comments like these make it all worthwhile for me.
    •NO
    Alan Jackson, educational psychologist, Cardiff
I’ve worked as an educational psychologist (心理学家) for many years and I must say that I’m very worried about this trend for encouraging younger and younger children to use computers. The negative (负面的) aspects of staring at a screen for a long time at a young age are obvious. The lack of physical exercise, for example, can lead to obesity (肥胖) and the lack of interaction (互动) with real people can lead to problems with speech development. These are just two of the problems, but I could go on and on. I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends.
36.Choose the best phrase to fill in the blank in Paragraph 3: At my college, we think that ________.
A.it’s never too old to learn B.it’s never too young to start
C.practice makes perfect D.all roads lead to Rome
37.The underlined phrase “head start” in the passage means ________.
    A.good beginning B.possible chance
    C.bad luck D.serious warning
38.Judy Clarke uses comments about Sarah and Jack to show ________.
