Starting on September 1, 2022, students in primary and middle schools have at least one course every week on basic household skills such as cleaning and cooking, according to the Ministry of Education (教育部). Should household courses be compulsory(义务的)at school? Here are some people's opinions.
By learning basic skills, children can learn how to take care of themselves and live independently. Parents won't always be there to help their children with every problem. Children should master these important skills as early as possible.
    —Michael
The household course should be compulsory at school. However, there are only limited (有限的) hours in a school day. I think it's also something that parents need to do at home with their kids. Remember that school can't teach your kids everything. They need you, too!
    —Jade
Household courses should be optional (选修的) for students. They should choose whatever they like. If one likes cooking, he or she is welcome. But household courses shouldn't be compulsory or forced on every student.
    —Ben
Schools should have cooking classes. Children will be taught where the food comes from, how to use the cooking tools properly and how to cook. Many parents have no time to do this. A household class would provide the knowledge and training that parents aren't able to give their children.
    —Linda

Have you ever left your kids alone at home? Were you worried about them? A few months ago, when preparing for a trip to Barcelona, my husband and I realized that our son was just weeks away from his 18th birthday and that our daughter was enjoying her first year of high school. We thought it was time to leave our kids alone at home. However, we couldn't imagine leaving them for a few days without our supervision (监管).
After talking with our kids, we decided to travel without them. Before leaving, I wrote a to-do list. I also asked some friends who had children older than mine for advice. One of my friends said, "They will do something dumb. You should prepare yourself for it. "
Sure enough, while we were away, our son locked himself out of our house. Thankfully, he called a relative who had a spare(备用的)key.
While we were away, did they wash their clothes on Tuesday? No, they didn't. Did they eat the prepared sandwiches in the fridge? Of course not. But when we came home, the house wasn't in a mess. The kids learned how to look after themselves. In fact, they both expressed how much they loved taking a break from our family life and how much they enjoyed having dinner in front of their favorite movies.
So don't be afraid. With the right preparation and some practice, you and your children will get comfortable with those days home alone!

"One more video. OK, now just one more . . . I’ll stop after this one . . Well, maybe just a short one . . . "
It can be hard for many people to stop using TikTok(抖音), a video app. Many users spend much time watching the app's short videos. Before they know it, several hours have passed! TikTok wants to help users control their screen time. It's adding a new function (功能) to remind people to take breaks.
TikTok has already had some functions to help. One of
those functions lets users set a limit(限制) for their screen time each day. Now, this control is going one step further. TikTok users will be able to set how long they can watch at a time. Once they hit that time, they'll get a reminder from TikTok — it's time to take a break!
Cutting down screen time can help in lots of ways. Experts say less screen time leads to less、stress and better sleep. Keeping away from the screen also lets you enjoy real life. People can exercise and spend more time with friends and family.
To control your screen time, you need to know how much time you're spending looking at the screen. Another new function of TikTok helps with that. It' s a screen time page, which tells users how much time they spend on TikTok each day and each week.
“Having a good relationship with digital devices (数码设备) isn't just about screen time, ”said Jordan Furlong, a TikTok leader. "It' s also about how we use technology. "Are you ready to control your screen time?

For most people, graduation is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy(经济)turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. We graduates(毕业生)had degrees, but very few job opportunities.
I knew the small town where I studied couldn’t offer me any opportunities(机会), so I drove to southern California to find work. I turned my scary feelings into a children’s book—about a surprising hero who simply refused to give up on his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree or contacts(关联)in the writing world—just a lot of hard work—I was offered a publishing(出版)deal for my first book! Not long after that, I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company(公司)and got a good job.
It takes time, but just hold on--things can change when you don’t expect it.
