Water lvers will tell yu that nt all water tastes the same. Hwever, if yur water tastes different when it's in a reusable plastic bttle, a new study finds it may be a cause fr wrry.
Tw scientists, Jan Christensen and Selina Tisler, have undertaken a study abut which chemicals (化学物质)in reusable plastic bttles g int the water. They let water sit fr 24 hurs in new bttles, in used bttles and in bttles that had just cme ut f a dishwashing machine. After that, they cmpared what they fund in the water in the different bttles.
The results were quite a surprise. Mre than 400 difierent chemicals had leached (析出) frm new plastic bttles int the water. Water stred in used plastic bttles had the highest levels f plastic-related chemicals. Running the bttles thrugh a dishwasher wrsened the leaching. After a single washing, mre than 3, 500 difierent chemicals ended up in a bttle's water. Many f these were related t dishwasher sap (洗碗皂) and remained even after a secnd washing with running water. What's mre, dishwashing itself als caused mre plastic chemicals t leach.
Similar discveries were als made by Pat Hunt, a bilgist at Washingtn State University. She fund that heat can cause chemicals t mve ut f plastics. Ht water in a dishwasher helps t clean dishes. But plastics can start t break dwn if they are in ht water repeatedly, "Plastics just shuldn't g in the dishwasher, " she cncludes.
Christensen and Tisler5s study fund sme chemicals that are prbably harmful. Future studies culd make clear hw much f each chemical is there. And that's imprtant. Just because a chemical is in the water desn't mean it will cause prblems. Much f the risk will depend n hw much f a chemical actually gets int the bdy.
Hunt agrees. "This study is a starting pint, " she says. It gives researchers ideas abut what chemicals frm reusable bttles are prbably in water. But it desn't tell us what risks the nw-plluted water may bring t us. Mre research is needed.
Still, lwering expsures (接触)t plastic-related chemicals is prbably a gd idea. Hunt suggests using nn-plastic bttles. "If yu d use a plastic bttle, fill it up and use it right away, " Tisler adds. “It's best nt t stre water in them vernight r fr lng perids f time. ”
27. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. The length f time water is kept in plastics matters.
B. Water in new plastic bttles has the mst chemicals.
C. Drinking ht water in plastic bttles harms peple's health.

A. whether chemicals actually enter the bdy
B. hw plastic-related chemicals get int water
C. what risks plastic-related chemicals may cause
D. when peple shuld thrw away a plastic bttle
29. What is this passage mainly abut?
A. Imprper usage f plastic bttles.
B. Varius pinins abut plastic bttles.
C. Unknwn chemicals in plastic bttles.
D. Research findings abut plastic bttles.

Why d we d the things we d? What drives ur behavir? Psychlgists have suggested different ways f thinking abut mtivatin (动机), including lking at whether mtivatin arises frm utside (extrinsic) r inside (intrinsic) a persn.
Researchers have fund that each type has a different effect n a persn's behavir and effrts t achieve gals. T better understand the influence f intrinsic and extrinsic mtivatin n human behavir, it wuld help t learn hw each type wrks.
Extrinsic mtivatin is when yu are mtivated t perfrm a behavir r take part in an activity because yu want t get a reward (奖赏)r avid punishment. Yu will take actin nt because yu enjy it, but because yu expect t get smething in return r avid smething unpleasant.
Intrinsic mtivatin is when yu decide t d smething because yu find it satisfying. Yu are perfrming an activity fr what it is nt because yu are after sme external (外部的)reward. The behavir itself is its wn reward.
Studies have shwn that ffering t many external rewards fr an already internally rewarding behavir can reduce intrinsic mtivatin—which is knwn as the ver justificatin (奖励过当)effect. Fr example, in a 2008 study, children wh were rewarded fr playing with a ty they had already expressed interest in playing with became less interested in the ty after being externally rewarded.
This is nt t suggest that extrinsic mtivatin is a bad thing—it can be beneficial in sme situatins. Fr example, extrinsic mtivatin can be especially helpful when a persn needs t cmplete a task that they find unpleasant.
Mst peple wuld accept that intrinsic mtivatin is best, but it is nt always pssible in every situatin. Smetimes a persn simply has n internal wish t jin in an activity.
Bth extrinsic and intrinsic mtivatin play a key rle in learning. Experts have argued that educatin's traditinal stress n external rewards (such as grades, reprt cards, and gld stars) undermines any intrinsic mtivatin that students might already have. Hwever, thers have suggested that extrinsic mtivatrs can help students feel mre knwledgeable in the classrm, which in turn builds up their intrinsic mtivatin.
As prfessr David Myers put it, a persn5s interest ften survives when a reward is used neither t bribe (贿赂)nr t cntrl but t shw a jb well dne, as in a "mst imprved player” award. Put simply, rewards, rightly given, can increase enjyment and mtivate high perfrmance.
Understanding hw each type f mtivatin wrks and when it is likely t be useful can help peple perfrm tasks and imprve their learning.
30. Yu d smething ut f intrinsic mtivatin when yu ___________.
A. d schlwrk t get a gd grade
B. wrk n a subject yu find interesting
C. take part in a sprt t receive recgnitin
D. clean yur rm t avid criticism frm yur parents
31. Why des the writer mentin the 2008 study in Paragraph 5?
A. T explain the benefits f ffering tys as rewards.
B. T prve external rewards can influence ne5s interest.
C. T intrduce hw intrinsic mtivatin wrks in children.
D. T stress the imprtance f understanding intrinsic mtivatin.
32. The wrd "undermines" in Paragraph 8 means _______________.
A. weakens B. separates C. imprves D. encurages
33. The writer prbably agrees that ______________________.
A. extrinsic mtivatin is key t ne's achievement
B. intrinsic mtivatin has little t d with enjying a task
C. prperly-given rewards can encurage further imprvement
D. ffering rewards f any kind takes the fun ut f an activity

The wrld’s leading researchers are studying ur senses. Frm the cnnectin between taste and smell, t the idea f “scent(气味)training”, there’s s much mre than we think t ur sense f smell.
Yur sense f smell is largely respnsible fr yur ability t taste fd. “Flavr(味道)is really an experience that jins what happens n yur tngue with smell,” says a prfessr at the University f Yrk, UK. “When yu put smething in yur muth, the mlecules(分子)g int yur nse. Maybe yur tngue can tell there’s fat in that chclate, and that’s smething the brain finds very satisfying, but the frmal chclate experience cmes frm all the mlecules ging int yur nse.”
Wmen ut-perfrm men when bth grups are asked t tell a certain number f scents
That hlds true acrss all age grups. This is because wmen are better at nticing a smell and better at describing it with language. Research shws that when peple were asked t memrize eight scents and were then given a scent test, the wmen were better able t tell whether r nt a scent was ne f the nes that had been memrized. Wmen were als better at recgnizing the scents by name.
Yur eating habits may change because f the lss f smell
“Yu think, ‘I remember hw this tasted in the past. I guess they dn’t have the same tasty tmates r meat any mre, ’”says a researcher. “But in fact, it’s yur sense f smell that may be wrking less.” Lsing the sense f smell is likely age-related r caused by a cld.
The lss f smell may even change peple’s eating habits. Sme peple will lse interest in eating r dn’t want t eat with their friends. Others will start eating lts f junk fd, spices, salt, t try t make eating mre enjyable.
Scent training might prtect ur sense f smell
The lss f smell is nt the end f the wrld. Sme research suggests that scent training might prtect ur sense f smell. By breathing in strng smells n purpse fr several weeks, peple becme mre sensitive(敏感的)t all scents and imprve their ability t smell. Researchers fund the MRI brain images f peple underging scent training gt thicker in the parts f the brain respnsible fr dealing with the rle f scent, which means it’s nt just a nse that is trained, it’s the whle brain.
27.What is respnsible fr flavr when yu eat smething?
A.The teeth and brain.B.The nse and tngue.
C.The brain and nse.D.The tngue and teeth.

(2022·北京西城·统考二模)It’s certainly gd t be nice. Whether it’s helping a friend with hmewrk, watching their favrite shws even if they’re nt yur thing r giving up a little time and energy t d smething fr a friend is a praisewrthy decisin. Or, ne might be the bigger persn and agree t take the shrt end f the stick in an argument, all t satisfy thers and avid further prblems. Still, we need t cntrl ur niceness: niceness is valuable, but it’s definitely nt withut dwnsides.
T be clear. I’m nt advcating(倡导)fr selfishness. In fact, I’d encurage everyne t d small favrs fr the peple they care abut. Helping thers makes us happy. It als gives us a greater sense f purpse and belnging, as we feel mre cnnected t thse we d favrs fr. The same ges fr sacrificing (牺牲)a little n ur part t end a disagreement, which might feel uncmfrtable in the shrt term, but is in the end fr the greater gd.
Yet, we need t be careful abut where ur niceness cmes frm. When ur desire(渴望)t help thers cmes frm a need t be seen as a gd r friendly persn, ur mtivatins (动机)becme increasingly dangerus. Fr example, we might want thers t relate t us, s we say that we like their favrite sngs when we dn’t. Being agreeable all the time makes us becme a prduct f the peple arund us instead f having ur wn special persnality.
Additinally, aviding unreasnable agreeability is even mre imprtant. We can’t help ffering t d t many favrs because ur desire t be seen as selfless and kind utweighs ur wrries fr ur wn well-being. If yu always supprt thers emtinally, r help them with their studies, that habit might becme part f hw yu view yurself. In ther wrds, yu see yurself as smene willing t lend a hand t thers when they are in need.
Agreeability crsses the experiences f all kinds f peple, and it can be especially true within cmmunities where selflessness is imprtant. Frm my experience at Harvey Mudd Cllege, students are knwn fr caring fr thers-ffering t help their classmates with their studies. This cmmn view f peple’s willingness t help can put stress n Mudders t sacrifice their energy, even if they dn’t have the skills t d s. Instead, they shuld remind themselves f their respnsibilities, and then decide if they have the ability t lend a hand.
Finally, making kindness a habit is an hnrable gal. But as with all things, mderatin(适度)is key, and smetimes, sacrificing a little t much can cause mre harm than gd.
30.What des the underlined part “take the shrt end f the stick” in Paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A.Say srry first.B.Hit the ther persn.C.Suffer bad results.D.Make up fr mistakes.
31.Unreasnable agreeability may stp us frm ________.
A.viewing urselves prperlyB.having a sense f belnging
C.develping scial relatinshipsD.caring abut ur wn happiness
32.Why is “Harvey Mudd Cllege” mentined in the passage?
A.T spread the spirit f selflessness within cmmunities.
B.T shw an effect f widespread niceness in cmmunities.
C.T criticize the students wh sacrifice t much fr thers.
D.T explain respnsibilities peple shuld take within cmmunities.

A.being nice can make peple easily understd by thers
B.being selfless helps peple imprve their scial skills
C.peple shuld think twice befre saying “yes”

The bys were hungry, s Mike’s mm gave them tickets t get cttn candy, htdgs, and sme ppcrn. The by was by himself and lked pr. His shirt and jeans were trn and dirty. Even his hair was messy.
After the bys finished their fd, they walked ver t Mike’s mm and tld her abut the by. “Can we d smething t help him?” asked Mike. “What d yu want t d?” his mm asked. “Let’s give him the spare tickets we have.” Mike and Rbert went ver t the by and handed him a ticket fr the rller caster.

Talking t yurself isn’t just fr humans—it’s fr rbts t.
Italian researchers have designed a rbt that can speak t itself, which enables users t hear its thught prcess and gain deeper insight int the technlgy’s decisin—making prcesses.
“If yu were able t hear what the rbts are thinking, the rbts might be mre trustwrthy,” study c—authr Antni Chella says. “The rbts will be easier t understand fr peple wh aren’t technicians r engineers. In a sense,we can cmmunicate and wrk with the rbts better.”
Humans depend n inner speech when lking fr clarity and mral(道德的) guidance, and it helps in the decisin—making prcess. The researchers set ut t see hw this culd affect rbts,s they develped ne called Pepper, and they trained it t set a table. They then gave it the ability t say,in plain English, what it was “thinking” when cmpleting a task.
After studying the rbt,the researchers fund that Pepper is better at slving dilemmas(进退两难的困境) when using inner speech. One experiment saw a user ask Pepper t break table setting rules by putting a frk in the wrng place, which led t the rbt asking itself a series f self—directed questins. It then cncluded that the user might be cnfused,s it cnfirmed(确认) the request befre cntinuing t use inner speech:
“Ehm,this situatin upsets me. I wuld never break the rules, but I can’t upset him,s I’m ding what he wants,”Pepper said while putting the frk in the wrng place.
The user can understand Pepper’s thughts as it uses its inner vice t slve a dilemma, which the researchers say culd lead t human—rbt trust.
Cmparing Pepper’s perfrmance with and withut inner speech,Chella discvered that the rbt had a higher task—cmpletin rate when using self—dialgue. “Peple were very surprised by the rbt’s ability,” Chella says. “The apprach makes the rbt different frm typical machines because it has the ability t reasn,t think. Inner speech culd be useful in all the cases where we trust the cmputer r a rbt fr evaluatin f a situatin.”
Althugh hearing the inner vice f rbts enriches the human—rbt interactin sme peple might find it inefficient because the rbt spends mre time cmpletin tasks when it talks t itself. The rbt’s inner speech is als limited t the knwledge that researchers gave it. Still Chella says their research lays the grundwrk fr mre research int hw self—dialgue can help rbts fcus, plan and learn.
27.Accrding t the passage,Pepper can________.
A.design a training taskB.talk t itself
C.teach table setting rulesD.read users’ minds
28.What can we learn frm the research?
A.The research aimed t help peple understand rbts’ actins.
B.Inner speech helps the rbt finish tasks mre quickly.
C.The Italian researchers created a new language fr rbts.
D.The rbt helped study peple’s decisin—making prcess.
29.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Rbts:Learn t LearnB.Rbts:Think Out Lud
C.Rbts:Make Better SpeechesD.Rbts:Always Trust Humans
Like mst peple, yu usually start wrk with the hpe f being as prductive as pssible. Yet, as the day rlls n, yu find yur task list grws. What yu set ut t achieve in the beginning seems t get pushed t the side.
Yu’re nt alne. Many f us dn’t have a prcess t priritize tasks and always feel like we’re playing catch-up. We fail t decide what’s the mst imprtant task even when everything n the t-d list feels imprtant. But we can get ahead f the game and stay n tp f deadlines with sme simple methds t set pririties and manage ur wrklad.
Here’s a simple way t priritize ur daily tasks and fcus (专注) n the wrk that matters mst: Of all the things we nw have the energy fr, d the thing we’re nrmally least likely t d. If we have tw live frgs (青蛙) t eat fr breakfast, the idea is t eat the ugliest ne as early as pssible.
There are several ways this trick (技巧) can benefit us.
Ding smething we rarely (很少) d is energizing. Yu d a behavir like washing yur windws that yu never d. Having clean windws wn’t change yur life but it challenges yur cnceptin f yurself. It influences hw we see urselves. Getting ur bdy mving gives us energy and can imprve ur fcus.
Unfamiliar behavirs ften prvide mre chances t help us grw than familiar nes. When I write fr a new publicatin, it’s with a new editr. I get different feedback. I need t change my style t match the style f that publicatin, s I develp my skills. In this way we’ll expand (发展) urselves, ur skills, and ur future pprtunities.
Sme peple react t anxiety by wrking hard n very cmfrtable behavirs but pay n attentin t uncmfrtable tasks that are a higher pririty. The way f priritizing helps prevent us frm ding that.
