Community service is unpaid work that we do to help others. My school asks students to do community service. Doing this kind of service not only helps others, but also allows us to examine real-world problems.

Homelessness is a big problem all over the world and is especially serious in Los Angeles, where I live. In LA, over 60,000 people have no choice but to live on the streets. In order to help these people, I have volunteered for different organisations where I make and hand out food to homeless people.

One of these volunteer programmes is called "Share a Meal". On Thursday nights, volunteers of "Share a Meal" meet at a food truck, where we take turns making burgers. Burgers are high in calories and protein (蛋白质) , making them perfect for homeless people. Volunteers also bring water and bananas.

After making the burgers, we drive around to neighbourhoods, handing out burgers and other foods to groups of homeless people. Communicating with them has been a very valuable experience. Their life stories sometimes make me sad, but their warmth and hope for the future are great to see.

This experience has made me want to do my best to be a helpful person in my community.

One of my favourite memories is of a day that was a big success for me. We were all trying to decide on a game to play, when Custard the cat pushed a football towards us with her little pink nose. "Great idea, Custard. Let's have a game of football!" shouted Peter.

Nature is beautiful, but it's also dangerous. As we have already seen, everything in nature must fight to live. Some things do their best to hunt and kill while others do their best to protect themselves.

Plants are not different. Plants develop all kinds of defenses (防卫) in order to stay alive. However, some plants don't just have defenses. Some plants are carnivorous (食肉的). If something is carnivorous, it eats meat. Carnivorous plants trap (诱捕) and eat insects.

Carnivorous plants have several skills that they use to trap insects. One of them is called“flypaper" skill. Flypaper plants have a sticky (黏的) surface. When an insect lands on the surface, it can't run away. After the animal is stuck, the plant will slowly curl its branch and eat it.

Another skill is called the "snap trap". If something“snaps", it opens and closes very quickly. There are only two "snap trap" plants. One of them is the Venus flytrap, which is probably the most carnivorous plants. When an insect lands on the Venus flytrap, the flytrap's mouth snaps. Many people say that it looks like an animal eating its prey (猎物).

Lobster (龙虾) trap plants have another skill. A lobster trap is a trap that's easy to come in but almost impossible to go away. After an insect enters a lobster trap plant, it cannot run away. This is because the inside of the plant has very small hairs that stop them away. It has other hairs that force the insect to move towards the plant's stomach. Then the plant eats the insect. The plants are called lobster trap plants because people use similar traps to catch lobsters.
