I love to go biking on the weekend! Two years ago, I bought an exercise bike(健身脚踏车). But soon I got bored with being at home, so I bought a used bike and started going for short rides. Now I plan day trips in my neighborhood. When you drive a car, you miss many things. It’s surprising how much more you can see when you’re biking.
    —Maggie
My favorite thing to do on the weekend is to go to the beach. The beach is beautiful all through the year. I usually drive there. If the weather is cold, I wear some warm clothes and go for long walks on the beach. When the weather is hot, I enjoy swimming or just lying in the sun.
    —Barbara
On the weekend I like to read books. If the weather is nice, I’ll take a good book to the park and stay there reading for hours. I think there’s nothing as enjoyable as reading a good book.
    —Bill
Weekends are for going hiking (徒步旅行) with my parents. We live near some beautiful mountains. Sometimes we camp out at night. We really enjoy cooking dinner over a campfire and spending a night under the stars!

The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page. Travelling the world can help us to better understand it. With this idea in mind, I began my journey to Yunnan.
When I reached the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. I felt the cold air. Even though it was summer, I felt like it was still winter there! The road to the top was so long and the weather was so foggy that it was hard to go on. I had to stop several times to take a small break. Finally, I reached the top with great excitement. Looking around, I could hardly believe my eyes. The mountain was covered in snow and shone like glass in the rising sun. And everything looked wonderful. Looking at the beautiful, natural sights. I felt smaller than an ant. What an amazing feeling!
After climbing the snowy mountain, I visited Lijiang, an old city with a history of about 800 years. When I walked on the stone path, it felt like walking through a long history step by step. Along the way, I noticed that the houses looked old and beautiful. I really love the city and its slow lifestyle.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have to give up many enjoyable things such as shaking hands and hugging(拥抱). Many people feel lonely or sad without physical touch. But there is something they can safely put their arms around and hold close: a tree.
Tree hugging may sound a little strange, but it’s not a new idea. Humans have turned to Mother Nature for comfort for centuries. In Japan, people have long practiced shinrin-yoku. “Shinrin” means forest and “yoku” is the Japanese word for bath. People have a bath in the forest. But no soap or water is needed for shinrin-yoku. All it needs is listening to the sounds and taking a breath.
After COVID-19 broke out, Israel encouraged(鼓励) people to try tree hugging. Moshe recently visited the Apollonia National Park to hug a tree. “We are not hugging many people these days,” he said. “Going out to nature, taking a deep breath and hugging a tree are quite nice things to do. ”
Iceland’s Forest Service made a similar decision. I advised everyone in the country to hug a tree for at least five minutes every day. Park workers cleared paths(小道) in the woods so that visitors could keep a safe distance(距离) when they looked for their favorite trees “There are lots of trees here, and there is no need for everyone to hug the same tree. ” said a park worker.
What do you think of tree hugging? When you feel lonely next time, would you be willing to go and hug a tree?

To Zhao Yuchen, a 13-year-old girl from Beijing, the biggest headache about studying online is the poor quality(质量) of her Internet connection. During one of her online classes, she couldn’t hear her English teacher’s voice and she had to reconnect. It wasted lots of time. Later, she knows that planning ahead and creating a study calendar(日程表) are very important. She says students need to estimate(估计) how much time each task will take, review the class content, ask questions and take notes, and make a to-do list for their homework. These are all good ways to help students learn better online.
Zhang Penghui, a 15-year-old boy from Heilongjiang believes online learning takes strong self-discipline(自律) and willpower, because there are lots of distractions(使人分心的事) while studying at home. His family like to offer him snacks and drinks, which sometimes distracts him from listening during his classes. He has asked them to stop interrupting( 打 扰 ) him while he was studying. It was nine on a cold winter night. I was going home from work on my bike. At the last crossing, while I was waiting for the green light, I saw an old man walking to me. Hearing “yes”, he took out 10 yuan and said to me, “Do you see the old woman selling baked sweet potatoes over there? Could you use the money to buy one from her?” He pointed at the old woman about fifty meters away.
“Why don’t you go and buy it yourself?” I was puzzled and asked. “She is my wife and it’s her first day to sell baked sweet potatoes. Just now I called her. Many parents think that it’s very difficult to get their children to do chores. But I think it’s easy to get children to do chores.
My daughter, Lucy is ten years old. At night, I write down her chores for the following day. Then I stick (贴) the paper with chores on her door. So she knows her chores by reading the paper on the door. Usually she gets three to eight chores a day. It depends on how she does chores. If she does all of her chores well, she can get fewer chores the next day. Some chores are easy, such as sweeping the floor, folding the clothes and cleaning the table after dinner.
For my other two children, the chores are different because they are very young. They both know how to put their empty (空的) dinner plates into the dish-washer (洗碗机). My 19 month-old son helps me put the dirty clothes in the washing machine (洗衣机) when I am washing the clothes. They can also help me when I’m working in the yard. We have to accept the truth: Sometimes, we just want to shout out loud.
For example, we all have days like this: When we just cleaned our room, the dog made a mess on the floor. Or our friend called to tell us he or she couldn’t come at the last minute after we cooked dinner for him or her. We may be really angry but we tried to bear(忍受) things like those. According to ancient Chinese wisdom(至理 名言), we should shout in a loud voice instead of keeping quiet. In fact, it’s good for our health.
“Chinese people pass on the practice as a part of traditional medicine,” said Mrs. Li, a 60-year-old woman from Hangzhou. “My parents taught me to do this. It ’s a part of our folk(民族) culture.”
Mrs. Li is a member of a group of people, and she loves shouting. Each morning, she and some of her friends climb to the top of a hill and let out loud shouts before starting their daily exercise. They believe that shouting is good exercise for them and it brings them a lot of fun.
“Sometimes I shout out and others shout back,” said Mrs. Gu, another shouting lover. “It makes you happy. You laugh and then you feel very comfortable.”
Dr. Peter Calafiura, an American doctor, agrees that shouting can have a good influence(影响) on people’s health.
So, next time you start your morning run, why not try to shout out first? It will make you healthier.

One day she heard that the old witches were planning to cast a spell(咒语)on a big mountain and turn it into a volcano(火山), which would destroy(破坏)a small town. The good little witch then went to tell the people about this, but they didn’t believe her and threw stones at her.
The little witch ran off, and sat crying at the side of the road. Soon a few children came by. She told them everything. The children told her that doing good was very easy: All you had to do was to help others, do good deeds(做好事)for them.
“And what can I do for you?” asked the witch.
“You could give us some candies!” They told her, happily. The witch was very worried, because she had no candies, and she didn’t know the spell for making them. But the children didn’t mind, and they went off to play.
The little witch was encouraged(受到鼓励)by this, and decided to help everyone. On her way, she met the old witches casting cheir spell on the mountain. Some magic words came into her head. Suddenly the fire on the mountain turned into lots of candies and fell onto the town below.

18.My oldest brother, Tom, had a beautiful cow named Ann. Tom raised Ann up since she was born. Every morning in summer he washed her carefully. She was so clean and special, because she liked to hold her head high as she walked. My neighbors thought she looked like a queen, so we sometimes called her Queen Ann.
I really wanted to be as confident as Queen Ann one day. And I always dreamed about getting a “friend” of my own just like my brother did and walking with it freely in the wild. However, there was a tumor growing in my leg bone. I could only walk slowly around the barn.
Then September came, and Ann was going to produce a calf in a few days. So I often entered the barn and patted Ann on her big and round side to check her condition.
    “MOOOO!”
    “BAWWW!”
That sounded funny. I looked over at Ann. She began to lie down. Then she got up. A lot of water came out from under her tail.
Suddenly, I realized something was going to happen.
Soon, I saw something move out of Ann. It was shiny and wet. She lay down again. Moving closer to her, I saw two small hooves inside a thick, almost clear bag.
    “MOOOO!” Ann got up again.
“Ann!” I said. “Wait! I’ll get Dad!”
I fell, of course, when I began to run, but I got up and walked as fast as I could.
“Ann’s having her calf!” I said in a hurry. Dad picked me up and we raced into the barn.
Dad caught calf’s legs and let me help him pull. Plop! Out came a calf. We did it!
