With no help on the way, Aughtry had to play nurse to a stranger. The man is a 64-year-old with developmental disabilities! Earlier that day, Joe mistakenly thought he had to go to work, so he left his group home and walked right into the eye of a deadly snowstorm.

On Feb. 3, a train carrying dangerous chemicals flew off the rails and started a massive fire just outside East Palestine, a small town in Ohio of about 5,000 residents. No injuries on deaths were reported.

The violent fire continued to spread through the weekend and locals said little information was communicated to them until the night of Feb. 5, when forced evacuations(撤退)began due to concerns that the train wreck would explode.

The remaining residents in the town crazily packed bags overnight and some were forced to abandon beloved pets. One woman left town a day early because her youngest son's “eyes turned red as tomato and he was coughing a lot," after the train derailed(脱轨).

On Wednesday, two days after the controlled burning and five days after the derailment, officials lifted evacuation orders and told residents they could return to their homes. Authorities said air and water samples had been analyzed and came back normal. Investigators say the train derailed because of a broken axle(车轴).

As some residents began to come back into town, unfortunately, they reported strange smells and dead animals. People were also surprised and worried by the sounds of passing trains, already running through the village again so soon after the accident. A couple who live about five miles from where the train derailed spotted hundreds of dead fish. Other people reported dead chickens and shared social media photos of dead dogs and foxes in the area.

An official declared chemicals had entered the waterways and killed fish but the drinking water was safe.

And yet, some East Palestine locals are choosing not to return home, and questioning whether it will ever be safe to do so. Some residents took to social media with doubts about the handling of the accident and whether they can trust what officials are telling them about the safety of the town.

Lately, a dangerous materials expert said that residents shouldn't be allowed back into the evacuation zone, so soon following the controlled burning. He thought that 5 to 20 years down the line, locals may see many people will suffer cancer.

    28. Why did one woman leave town a day early according to paragraph 3?

    A. She was forced to leave by the local government.

    B. Her son was too afraid of the accident to stay.

    C. She was badly injured in the train accident.

    D. Her son was in urgent need of medical pare.

    29. What was to blame for the train accident?

    A. The locals' ignorance.

    B. The train's problem itself.

    C. The driver's careless driving,

    D. The government's poor management.

    30. What does the fifth paragraph stress most?

    A. The train derailment's background.

    B. Locals' complaints on authorities.

    C. The consequences the train derailment brought,

    D. Government's measures to handle the accident.

    31. What can we infer from what the dangerous materials expert said in the last paragraph?

    A. He was surprised to see residents get back home,

    B. Many locals in the area have been suffering cancer.

    C. He thought it correct for residents to get back home early.

    D. It's certain to predict what will happen in the following 5 to 20 years.

    D

On Monday, a California company called Rocket Lab used a helicopter to clasp a huge booster section of a rocket out of the air as it fell from space.

To launch spacecraft into space, rockets use several stages of “boosters". Booster rockets push the main spacecraft up and then fall back to Earth when their fuel is gone.

The company SpaceX already has a system for reusing boosters. Using special engines, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket boosters slow themselves down as they fall to Earth, and then land in a controlled way. But Rocket Lab's rockets are far smaller and can't carry the fuel needed to return in this way.

In the past, Rocket Lab has recovered some boosters from the ocean, but the salty sea water can damage boosters and make them hard to reuse safely. To handle this, Rocket Lab used a flying helicopter to catch the booster as it fell back to Earth.

After launching from New Zealand, and helping push the rocket's payload of 34 satellites into orbit, the booster reached a top height of about 50 miles (80 kilometers) above the Earth. Then it began-falling, reaching speeds as fast as 5,200 mph (8,400 kph). As you might imaging, catching a 39-foot(12-meter) tube that weighs nearly 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms) as it falls from space is very complicated. But it worked--at least for a while.

Once the booster had slowed down enough, a small parachute(降落伞) was opened to slow it down even more. Then the helicopter was towing a strong cable(缆绳) with a hook at the end of it. This hook grabbed onto a cable of the parachute. Suddenly, the booster had stopped falling and was supported by the helicopter. The test wasn't a complete success, though. After a few moments, the helicopter pilots realized that the weight of the booster was pulling in a way that was unsafe. They released the booster, which was later recovered from the sea.

Rocket Lab hopes that by learning from what happened this time, the next time the helicopter will be able to safely take the booster back to land or to a nearby boat.

    32. Which can best take the place of the underlined word “Grasp” in paragraph I

    A. analyze

    B. grab

    C. encounter

    D. integrate

    33. Why did the helicopter pilots release the booster on the half-way of the test?

    A. To keep the speed of the booster.

    B. To reduce the weight of the booster.

    C. To get the booster from the ocean.

    D. To protect the safety of the helicopter.

    34. What do we know about Rocket Lab's attempt in paragraph 6?

    A. It was a good trial though not successful.

    B. It proved the previous way was better.

    C. It was impossible to reuse the booster.

    D. It went successfully as planned.

    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Launching Reused Rockets to Save Cost

    B. Recovering the Booster from the Ocean

    C. Catching a Booster as It Falls from Space

    D. Stopping a Helicopter Falling by a Booster

I was writing up medical records of the surgery patients when my receptionist stuck her head into my office.

Dr. Godfrey, sorry to interrupt, but there's a lady on the phone who says she just found a cat in her back yard with a badly injured leg.”

I'll take the call," I said, picking up the phone on my desk.

This is Dr. Godfrey. How can I help you?"

"Doctor, I apologize for calling, but I don't know what to do!" The woman said. “There's a big cat lying outside my back door with a badly injured leg."

"Do you have any idea who might own him?" I asked. "Do you see any collar or tag on him”

I didn't get close enough to check for sure, but I don't see any obvious collar.” The woman was close to tears. “I really think he must be a stray. He has some old scars on his head. The poor thing..."

I assured the lady I was more than willing to help and I took down her address. It was only about ten minutes away. "I have two pre-vet students in the clinic today. I'll send my students right out to pick up the cat." I went up front and explained the situation to the students.

"If the cat's wild, you may not be able to get close to him. But from what the woman said, he sounds pretty sick, so he may not be able to get away." They eagerly accepted the challenge and ran to the clinic truck.

When the eat was taken into my clinic, we gently placed him on a warm towel on the exam table. He lay very still, his breathing rapid and shallow. His right front leg was badly hurt. It looked like he was caught in a trap.

The only way I could save him was to amputate(截肢) that leg, but he'd have to be an inside cat afterward with someone able to give him lots of care. And even with surgery, his chances were pretty slim.

Although the lady called back and said the cat didn't appear to have an owner, we decided to give the cat an operation. Over the next few weeks, the eat went through many ups and downs. With our care in my clinic, the cat recovered slowly. The day finally came when I decided the cat had truly survived.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
