King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table
By Roger Lancelyn Creen
I loved reading when I was little. I think that’s the reason I love writing for children. My parents were both English teachers, and our home was full of books. Dickens was a family favourite. But the book that really fired my imagination was King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green, which my father read to me at bedtime when I was around 12.
Diary of a Nobody
By George and Weedon Grossmith
I’m a fool for a classic, and I’m so glad I finally came across Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. It began life as a serial in Punch, with text by Ceorge and illustrations by Weedon. Put simply, it’s the funniest book I’ve ever read, and the model for so many brilliant first-person narratives like Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones. The short pitch is that it follows the social climbing of a London clerk, Charles Pooter but of course it’s so much more than that, poking fun at all things from middle class.
Exhalation
By Ted Chiang
It’s never too late to have your life changed by a book, and it happened to me again recently when I read Ted Chiang’s Exhalation. Ted Chiang wrote Story of Your Life, which inspired the sci-fi alien-visitation classic Arrival. I love that too, but each and every piece in Exhalation is its match in writing skills. If there are super-intelligent aliens in the galaxy seeking to communicate important truths, Ted Chiang may well be one of them.
21.What is special about the book King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table?
A. It describes a story of intelligent aliens.
B. It stimulates the author’s imagination of writing.
C. It helps the author to improve the writing skills.
D. It opens a window for the author to understand classics.
22.Who has drawn pictures for the book Diary of a Nobody?
A. Roger Lancelyn Green. B. George.
C. Weedon Grossmith. D. Ted Chiang.
23.Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A novel. C. A guidebook. D. A magazine.
B
Christian Liden decided that he would not pick out a ring from a jeweler’s like most other people. He hatched an ambitious plan to create a personalized ring for his future wife, Desirae Clovis. Therefore, he made up his mind to go into the wild to find his own materials: the diamond, the gold and the accompanying jewels.
So, in May 2022, Liden told Clovis that he and Josh Tucker, his best friend, were heading out on a camp to Yellowstone. Instead, he and Tucker made for Crater of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas, which is set on a volcanic crater. The park is one of the few places in the world where the public is welcome to search for real diamonds and can keep them for free. Since its opening, only 1 in10,000 park visitors is lucky enough to find a diamond that weighs a carat or more. Still, he was up for the challenge.
On their way, Liden and Tucker stopped in Helena, Montana, to mine for accompanying jewels to add to the diamond they hoped to score. In Arkansas, the pair paid $10 each to get into the park and spent almost three days searching through the volcanic dirt.
On the third morning, Liden suddenly spotted something reflecting light in the sands. “I was so excited that I started shaking.” he said, “It was oily and shiny, and we both just knew it was a Diamond.”
It was confirmed that Liden had found a 2.2-carat yellow diamond. Similarly-sized diamonds go for $2,500 to $20,000 per carat, depending on quality, color and cut. But the value wasn’t what was important to Liden.
When he pulled out the diamond and got on his knee upon his return, Clovis was amazed. “I knew that he was going to propose someday”, she said, “but I certainly didn’t expect this.”
24.What was Christian Liden’s ambitious plan?
A.He intended his ring to consist of various jewels.
B.He would get a personalized ring from a jeweler’s
C.He decided to make a ring together with his future wife.
D.He planned to hunt for a natural diamond to create a ring.
25.Why did Liden and Tucker choose Crater of Diamond State Park?
A.It was the only place that charged jewel hunters nothing
B.They were likely to find more than just natural diamonds
C.The majority of park visitors had got their ideal diamonds
D.The public was allowed to keep any diamond found there.
26.Why was Liden excited about his findings?
A.He had got the largest diamond in the park’s history.
B.The value of the diamond was above his expectations.
C.He was lucky to acquire the diamond for his dream ring.
D.The quality and color of his diamond ranked among the best.
27.What can we learn from the story?
A.True love stories never have endings. B.Love shows more in action than in words.
C.Absence makes two hearts grow fonder. D.A life lived in love will never be boring.
C
As a “major” at university, philosophy may not be so popular nowadays, for it seems to be too abstract, remote and impractical, unlike subjects such as computing, finance, accounting and so on.
Fundamentally speaking, the word “philosophy”,originated from the Greek Φιλοσοφία meaning “love of wisdom”, originally included all kinds of knowledge. In that world dominated by supernatural gods, philosophers and scientists were the same, and their wisdom was started by asking questions. They believed that everything in the world is composed of air and attempted to examine the air and the sun --- these quests developed their wisdom.
The relations between man and the world may be divided into three categories, namely the relationships between man and nature, man and society and within the human self, which are studied separately by the natural sciences, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology; social sciences, such as sociology, economics, politics, law, ethics; and sciences of thinking, such as brain science, neuroscience(神经学), psychology, logic. Philosophy, however, is none of these branches of learning but their abstraction and generalization.
The benefits of studying philosophy may be realized as follows: First, it assists people to properly adjust the relations between nature, society and the self, becoming fully aware of where they stand macrocosmically(宏观地)and microcosmically. Second, it makes people think more systematically, combining various “separated materials”. Essentially, philosophy is the study of thinking, analyzing issues from different angles before anything can be taken in. Special attention is paid to strict reflection during every stage of thinking and this process itself is included as part of its study, so as to form a pattern of clear critical thinking. Third, philosophy can also shape one’s character. Difficult thinking, reasoning and summarizing result in people becoming firmer and more persistent in a deep sense. Since philosophy is finally about living, it leads to an appreciation of meaningful life through perfecting personality.
In a sense, philosophy is in fact widely applicable and has been studied and acquired by experts of natural and social sciences and many philosophers, both at home and abroad, who have become celebrities either in their specialist fields of study or in their switched professions as generalists.
Therefore, philosophy is not abstract, nor remote, but of profound use.
28.How is the second paragraph mainly developed?
A.By classification. B.By time. C.By definition. D.By comparison.
29.Which is NOT one of the relations between man and the world?
A.to understand nature. B.to understand humans.
C.to understand logic. D.to understand society.
30.What benefit can people get from learning philosophy?
A.People can become fully aware of the standing place on the earth.
B.People can become firmer and seldom change their ideas.
C.People will have a simple understanding of the life through appreciation.
D.People will form an opinion after viewing a matter from different aspects.
31.What can be learned about philosophy?
A.It is remote from people’s life and has no profound use.
B.It is filled with wisdom and was established by supernatural gods.
C.It is widely obtained and used by many natural and social experts.
D.It is one of the branches of the natural sciences.

Traci and Dave Gagnon met in the cloud, so it was only natural that their wedding would be held there as well. The pair—or rather, their digital avatars(替身)——married on Labor Day weekend in a ceremony hosted by Virbela, a firm that creates virtual environments for work, learning, and events.
Ms. Gagnon’s avatar was accompanied by her close friend’s avatar. Mr. Gagnon’s avatar stood there watching as his friend’s avatar walked up to the platform and gave a toast. At the reception,7-year-old twin avatars(the ring bearer and flower girl)danced.
At present, it’s anyone’s guess how the immersive virtual world known as the metaverse(元宇宙), which few of us understand, will change the traditional wedding. However, the prospects of having an event outside of reality’s restrictions are interesting enough for us to think.
Technology has been used in ceremonies more than ever before as a result of COVID-19. There have been Zoom marriages, and some in-person ceremonies now include a broadcast component for those who are unable to attend. Last year, a couple whose wedding was postponed due to COVID-19 held a ceremony within the popular video game Animal Crossing.
It’s worth noting, though, that, like a video game wedding, any weddings that take place only in the metaverse are now illegal.
Experts predict that the metaverse will take these virtual celebrations to new heights, providing couples with nearly limitless choices. “There are no boundaries,” said Sandy Hammer, co-founder of Allseated, a company that develops digital wedding planning tools. Consider guest lists in the tens of thousands. Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are used in gift registries. Perhaps even weddings in space as a destination.
“They’re going to take their pals on a space rocket,” Ms. Hammer added, imagining wedding parties digitally travelling around the world. “A bride can send her guests into the metaverse by saying, ‘I want my morning session in Italy, and my evening session in Paris.’”
32. What’s the author’s purpose in describing the ceremony?
A. To make readers better understand the wedding in the cloud.
B. To show how exciting the wedding in the cloud was.
C. To express his concern over the future of traditional weddings.
D. To praise Traci and Dave Gagnon’s daring spirit.
33. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 4?
A. By providing reasons. B. By following the time order.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving examples.
34. What is Sandy Hammer’s attitude towards the metaverse?
A. Uncaring. B. Opposed. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Forms of Modern Marriages B. The Prospects of the Metaverse
C. Getting Married in the Metaverse D. Holding Events Regardless of Reality

Tom and his younger sister, Lucy, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood.Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Tom took Lucy's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Lucy agreed and the two decided to share Tom's running shoes. Lucy's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Tom. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon.Although he ran as fast as he could, Tom often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Tom heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Tom had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache.Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Lucy and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞)with Tom from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Text 10为国际生制定的健康保险计划
M: (18)Most universities and colleges in the United States have a health insurance plan for international students. It generally costs around$300 a year now. You may think it is a waste of money, but if you have even a small medical problem, the insurance will help you to pay the bills. So, you should buy a medical insurance when you arrive at the university. I am sure the International Students Office will help you with that. (19)Private doctors are the standard form of the medical care in America, but there are also college clinics, public and private clinics, etc. The quality of medical care can be different in these different places, so it would be better if you ask an American friend for advice before going to see a doctor. Before you leave China, I suggest you have a medical examination. If there is something wrong, you can have it cured in your own country. (20)Don’t forget to take your personal and family health records abroad with you. They provide important and useful information if you need to go to the hospital. But remember to take good care of yourself. Don’t work too hard.
