ONLINE SHOPPING: The Crazy Things People BuyIn this week’s blog, we look at some unusual things people can buy online. |
① A PIECE OF THE MOON: $27.50 |
It’s true. You can own a piece of land on the moon. An acre, or about 4,000 square meters, of moon costs $27.50. That’s a lot of space for your stuff. In fact, the price of each acre goes down when you buy more land. Imagine what you could do with all that space... if you could travel there! But don’t worry, you get a certificate (证书) that says the land is yours. |
② SOMEONE TO STAND IN LINE FOR YOU: $25 AN HOUR |
No one likes to stand in line, right? Now you don’t have to! For $25 an hour, someone waits patiently in line to get the things you need. Imagine that! Some people pay for someone to stand in line for movie tickets or for a new video game that’s on sale. Book online in just a few clicks. |
③ SOME VERY EXPENSIVE SNEAKERS: $20,000 AND UP |
Do you ever think your shoes are boring? Well, our sneakers are just what you need. Just go to our online store, look for a pair of sneakers you like, and place a bid (竞价). Maybe you’ll win! Some of the sneakers are from famous basketball players. |

Many people like dogs and cats, but they just don’t have the time to take care of them. If that sounds like you, here’s the answer to your problem: a digital pet rock. When our first grandchild, Noah, was born, we were over the moon with excitement! We had expectations of what he would look like, how he would laugh, and how he would grow and develop like most babies. But unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.
Noah faced a lot of health problems from the very beginning. It was a difficult and trying time for our family as we watched him struggle. Doctors gave him a label that broke our hearts—“failure to thrive (茁壮成长).”
One of the things we take for granted when we have children is their ability to eat. Unfortunately, Noah wasn’t able to suck (吮吸) like most babies. He couldn’t eat on his own, and it was heartbreaking for us to see him go through so much pain and discomfort. The doctors had to give him a feeding tube just to keep him alive.
One day, while I was at the grocery store, I saw a young mother walking by with her newborn baby. The baby started to cry a little, and in a disgusted (厌恶的) voice, the mother complained that she had to feed the baby again. It broke my heart to hear her complaining about something that I knew so many parents would be grateful for. So, I decided to share with her what Noah was going through. I told her, “You have no idea how thankful my daughter would be to feed Noah like you’re able to.”
Noah is a unique and outstanding boy. Today, he’s 13 years old, and he has come a long way since those early days. He has faced many challenges, but he has also achieved so much. We’re grateful that he can do things today that we never thought would be possible.
19.Why didn’t things go as planned?
A.Because the author didn’t see Noah’s birth in person.
B.Because the author was on the moon when Noah was born.
C.Because Noah wasn’t as normal as they had expected.
D.Because Noah was born to be strong but couldn’t laugh.
20.What did the author share with the young mother at the grocery store?
A.How to be a good mother. B.How to feed a baby.
C.Noah’s health condition. D.Complaints from Noah’s mother.
21.What does the author want to tell us in this story?
A.Life is not always fair. B.Be grateful for what we have.
C.No pain, no gain. D.Work hard and achieve higher.
Last term I took a beginner’s course in video art. The course taught me about the development of modern and contemporary (当代) arts and how media works.
Lauren Woods, the course professor, encouraged us to make and edit videos. At the beginning of the course, I made a video about food. I believe food is a good way to learn more about cultural differences and social traditions, and trying food is a way for me to understand the world and make friends. I believe a video about food can best explain my values and ideas about the world.
We also learned about performance art. Performance artists use their bodies and behaviors to inspire people’s thoughts about the world. Once, Professor Woods gave us paint, glue and colored paper, and let us do whatever we wanted to in an empty art room. At first, we just drew some flowers and animals on the walls; however, later, we poured paint on the walls and even broke the colored paper. This art experiment showed that when there are no rules, people can have strong destructive (破坏性的) power.
Our final project was shooting a performance art video. I shot a video of myself taking care of an egg. I needed to wash the egg and talk to it every 15 minutes. I discovered my social life, rest times and study times were cut off by taking care of the egg. I wanted to use this video to show the difficulties of being a mother, and encourage society to think of motherhood as a real job.
In general, the video art class provided me with the chance to create and edit videos by myself. It allowed me to learn more about modern arts in Western society. It was the most interesting and creative course I took this past term.
22.What is the theme of the author’s first video?
A.Food. B.Media. C.Art. D.Thoughts.
23.What’s the meaning of performance art according to the text?
A.To study human bodies and behaviors. B.To break the rules set by ourselves.
C.To inspire people to think about the world. D.To show people’s strong destructive power.
24.What does the underlined word “shooting” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.performing B.making C.watching D.practicing
25.What does the author want to teach us through his/her art video?
A.It’s boring and tiring to take care of an egg day every day.
B.Being a mother isn’t easy and is worthy of our respect.
C.Society should pay mothers more because of their work.
D.Mothers should have a better chance to get jobs.
26.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Creating by performances B.Growing with artists
C.Being a teacher like Lauren Woods D.Learning through art
When people think of Beijing, the hutong style always comes to mind. It is no exaggeration(夸张)to say within hutong lives the city’s history.
The word “hutong” referred to a place where people live, which was borrowed from the Mongolian word to mean “water well” about 700 years ago. Hutong we see today are made up of small paths formed by walls of siheyuan. They were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, there were more than 3,000 hutong. Most of the city’s population lived in this traditional housing. But with the modernization of the city in the 1980s and early 1990s, many hutongs were pulled down to build roads, skyscrapers and modern houses.
The government has recognized the importance of hutong to Chinese cultural heritage. In 2002, Beijing listed 40 protected historical zones and increased its efforts to rebuild some key relics and older streets in the city. Nearly 500 hutong have survived.
Hutong that still exist are like oases(绿洲)of calm in the noisy city. Walking through them, it’s common to see groups of elderly people sitting together playing cards, mahjong(麻将)or Chinese chess. In the early mornings and evenings, they gather to practice traditional forms of exercise such as Taijiquan as well as dancing and singing folk songs or Peking Opera. Hutong have become a museum of Beijing’s folk customs and history.
27.What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To add background information of hutong. B.To bring in the topic of the context.
C.To stress the importance of hutong. D.To introduce the benefits of hutong.
28.What happened to hutong in Beijing in 2002?
A.More hutong were built. B.Lots of hutong disappeared.
C.Most hutong became historical zones. D.Some hutong were placed under protection.
29.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The future of hutong. B.The change of hutong.
C.The beauty of hutong life. D.The history of hutong life.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards Hutong protection?
A.Negative. B.Unclear. C.Supportive. D.Doubtful.

Hi Tracy!
It’s a great honor to give you some advice.
I think a Chinese knot is a good birthday gift for your little cousin. It is red and pretty. As you know, red is a symbol of good luck in China. I believe your cousin will like it very much. What’s more, it is made of cotton, so it doesn’t cost much. You can buy it directly from the shops on Hefang Street near the West Lake which have the most kinds of Chinese knots. So you can choose one you like. By the way, you can pay it by Alipay or Wechat. Online payment is popular in Hangzhou.
I can also go there with you. It will be an excellent shopping experience for us.
Yours,
Li Hua
