Great painter Salvador Dali once said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” These words perfectly describe V Umapathy, an art teacher from Puducherry, India, who instills(灌输) the seeds of creativity in his students through arts and crafts.
Umapathy makes beautiful crafts out of biodegradable materials like bamboo, dried leaves, seeds, roots, branches, vegetable waste, and so on. In this way he promotes sustainability in his creations, leaving an everlasting impact on his students.
While growing up, Umapathy was inspired by his father, a teacher and expert weaver(编织者).
“He spent most of his evenings engaging in weaving. I would observe him and eventually developed an interest in design, colour, and the art,” recalls Umapathy.
In 2010, Umapathy joined a high school in Puducherry as their art teacher. It took him some time to excite the interest of the students. He experimented with different arts and crafts using a variety of materials. “One day I suddenly realized that most of the students at my school weren’t able to afford the materials or equipment to create craftwork. So I decided to opt for natural materials, which are as good as non-biodegradable materials and easy to find,” he says.
This move made the students more interested in the craft than before. Under his guidance, the students were convinced that they could make wonders even out of waste materials. Now the school exhibits over 300 pieces of artwork on its walls, all created by the students over the years.
Currently, over 20 students have chosen fine arts for their bachelors and are pursuing a career in it. Muruga, who currently works as a designer, says, “When I expressed my wish to pursue arts after college, Mr. Umapathy guided me. It was his encouragement and guidance that helped me throughout. Now he still helps me by referring to my name, whenever there is work or a project.”
    24. Which of the following can best describe Umapathy’s craftwork?
    A. Abstract. B. Eco-friendly. C. Traditional. D. Fashionable.
    25. What did Umapathy often do as a child?
    A. He assisted his father in weaving. B. He learned weaving techniques.
    C. He collected weaving materials. D. He watched his father weaving.
    26. Why did Umapathy choose natural materials?
    A. They are freely available.
    B. They are perfect for crafts.
    C. They can fire students’ imagination.
    D. They can raise students’ awareness of recycling.
    27. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
    A. Muruga is very grateful for Mr. Umapathy’s help.
    B. Umapathy is proud of his students’ achievements.
    C. Muruga is more famous in the field than his teacher.
    D. Umapathy often works with his students in big projects.
    C
Everyone has a phone in their pocket nowadays, but how often do we really use them for their original purpose — to make a call? Telephone culture is disappearing. What brought us to this moment, and what are its effects?
“No one picks up the phone anymore,” wrote Alex C. Madrigal on The Atlantic. “The reflex(习惯性动作) of answering-built so deeply into people who grew up in 20th-century telephonic culture — is gone.
The shift is of course due in large part to more communication options: Texting with photos, videos, emojis, reaction gifs, links and even voice messages can be a more attractive option.
Texting is light and fun, not nearly as demanding of your attention as a phone call. It can also be done with multiple people at the same time. Social media, email and video calls have also eaten away at traditional phone calls.
In recent years, another reason has caused people to ignore phone calls completely: robocalls. Robocalls are automated(自动化的) messages from organizations verifying(核实) your phone number or telemarketers trying to sell something. Americans received 22.8 billion robocalls halfway through 2020, equaling an annual rate of 45.6 billion, slightly below 2018 numbers, according to YouMail, a robocall protection service and blocking app.
As telephone culture disappears, what is the loss of a singular family phone doing to the family unit? Early landline phones unified family members, whereas mobile phones isolate(使隔绝) them.
“The shared family phone served as an anchor(给以安全感的物品) for home,” said Luke Fernandez, a Weber State University computer-science professor and co-author of Bored, Lonely, Angry, Stupid: Feelings About Technology, From the Telegraph to Twitter. With smartphones, “we have gained mobility and privacy. But the value of the home has been diminished, as has its capacity to guide and monitor family behavior and perhaps bind families more closely together,” Fernandez said.
Of course, as technology progresses, lives always change for better or for worse. With the loss of telephone culture, families will need to find other ways to unite.
    28. What has caused the traditional telephone to lose its appeal according to the text?
    A. People’s addiction to social media.
    B. People’s preference for robocalls.
    C. People’s growing need for privacy.
    D. People’s wide range of communication choices.
    29. What does the underlined word “diminished” in the second-to-last paragraph probably mean?
    A. Strengthened. B. Reduced. C. Instructed. D. Inherited.
    30. What does Luke Fernandez point out?
    A. Smartphones tie families together.
    B. Smartphones help people monitor family behavior.
    C. The use of mobile phones has affected family bonds.
    D. The value of home depends on how phones are used.
    31. What does the article mainly talk about?
    A. The downfall of traditional telephone culture.
    B. The past and future of telephones.
    C. The development of communication tools.
    D. The relation between phone use and family bonds.
    D
The Internal Business Machines Corporation, known as IBM, says it is making technology for precision weather predictions available to everyone. The company said the new weather forecasts offer more details and bring a level of accuracy once available only in major industrial countries. The forecasting tool is expected to help emergency officials better predict where severe storms will hit. It may also aid airline companies to plan flight paths, as well as farmers to care for crops.
The new system creates weather forecasts more often and with finer details than what is available outside the United States, Europe and Japan. Most forecasts have a resolution(分辨率) of 10 to 15 square kilometers and provide new information every six to twelve hours. IBM’s Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting System goes down to three square kilometers and provides information every hour.
Fred Carr is a famous climatology(气候学) professor at the University of Oklahoma and was not involved in the project. Carr said the United States has a similar high-resolution forecasting system, “but it’s just for the U.S. because it takes so much computer time. To do it for the whole globe is a pretty important achievement.” Carr added that it is possible to quickly collect observations from radar, airplanes and surface measurements in the United States. But he said it is not clear how IBM gets information from the other 98% of the world. Carr said he believes there will be problems in getting information, so “sometimes those forecasts aren’t going to be very accurate”. Users will be able to decide for themselves. The system now operates on the Weathers.com website and The Weather Channel’s application program for smartphones.
In the future, IBM hopes to improve its forecasts by collecting information from atmospheric pressure sensors used in such phones. The sensors improve the precision of global positioning system, or GPS, technology. For example, they can help fitness tracking instruments measure how many steps a user has taken. IBM said it is not currently using this information but plans to offer users the chance to choose it. Some privacy activists and governments have criticized technology companies for gathering this kind of information. The city of Los Angeles, California has brought a case against IBM for improperly using location information from Weather Channel app users.
    32. What is special about IBM’s new forecasting system?
    A. It offers a level of accuracy that has never previously existed.
    B. It has some functions that other systems don’t have.
    C. It is specially designed to help airline companies.
    D. It updates more frequently than most systems.
    33. According to Fred Carr, what will be the main challenge for IBM’s new forecasting system?
    A. Taking up too much computer time.
    B. Making it universally usable across the whole globe.
    C. Acquiring detailed forecasting information.
    D. Lacking the tools to collect observations.
    34. According to the last paragraph, IBM is being criticized for _____________.
    A. installing atmospheric pressure sensors in user’s phones.
    B. offering users the chance to choose different apps.
    C. making use of GPS technology unreasonably.
    D. collecting users’ location information.
    35. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
    A. The Spread of IBM’s New Forecasting Technology
    B. Better Weather Predictions Coming to the Developing World
    C. IBM’s New Forecasting System Has Unique Advantages
    D. IBM Still Has a Long Way to Go to Develop Its Forecasting System
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What’s better: private school vs public school? Choosing which school to send your children to can be a very hard decision to make. 36 .
Ask about testing scores. Students at private schools tend to outscore public school students on standardized tests, which can affect your child’s ability to get into college. 37 . Researchers have used the same data to come to conflicting conclusions. Other factors like socioeconomic status, can influence student’s scores, regardless of where they are educated.
38 . In general, public schools tend to have larger class sizes than private schools. If you need a school that can give more attention to individual students, you might consider a private school or a smaller public school.
Tour the school. Before you even begin to choose between a public or private one, you’ll need to schedule a tour of the school you’re interested in. Do the students look happy and engaged? Are the learning spaces bright and clean? 39 . Taking your children along gives them the chance to see the school and decide if it feels like a comfortable environment to them.
Don’t put too much stock in online ratings. 40 . But they could also have fantastic teachers and principals. Talking to others help you figure out if this is true. Therefore, don’t write a school off just because its ratings are a little low.
In a word, knowing what matters to you in terms of the differences between public and private education can make your decision a little easier.
    A. The final decision is yours
    B. Take into account class size
    C. Some practical actions can help a lot
    D. However, there is some debate about this
    E. You can learn a lot about these when you visit
    F. Same schools might have unfavorable comments
    G. Decide how important private schools are to your child

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On Monday, truck driver Justin Martin from Ontario, Canada, was passing through Ohio. When he stopped that evening in Circleville, the stop, which was normally a busy town, was extremely quiet. Only a few other trucks were parked, and all the restaurants looked closed — except for one.
There was a Wendy’s (like McDonald’s, but smaller) with a few cars in the parking lot, so, left with no other choice, Martin decided to walk over and see if it was still open. The dining room was closed. However, an employee did open the drive-in window to talk to him and let him know they were closed and had just thrown away all the leftover food. Martin said thanks, and was most likely facing a night with no hot food. But the employee had a thought and told him to hang on a moment.
She went and got the manager, 19-year-old Ohioan Zach Meadows. When Meadows heard about Martin’s trouble and what he wanted, he went to speak to Martin himself. “We have actually been closed for about five to ten minutes,” Meadows said. He approached the window and began talking to the man, and then he found out that he was a truck driver. “Could you do me a favor? Because I haven’t really eaten all day,” Martin asked. “Could you give me a second, and do you want something to drink?” Meadows answered without thinking. Martin told Meadows that he wanted some iced Coke, but Meadows gave him a large one and some foods since he had been driving for eight or nine hours that day. He just wanted to do what he could to help Martin. Although Martin tried to pay for the meal, Meadows refused to accept his money. Meadows told him, “It’s free for us, so it should be free for you.”
There was only one problem: Meadows was breaking the rules by giving Martin the food free of charge. But at that moment, he decided that helping out a trucker in these difficult times was more important than following general rules.
Paragraph 1: Martin ended up with a variety of foods and a large Coke.

Paragraph 2: The video started spreading, and it wasn’t long before it got back to Meadows.

    第二节
Martin ended up with a variety of foods and a large Coke. Touched by the kindness of the Circleville Wendy’s, he filmed a video once he got back to his truck, explaining what had happened and publicly thanking the young manager and two employees. Once this video got out, Ohioans were really proud of Zach. They were so proud that a truck driver got treated that way by one of their own and that’s exactly what Zach is — he is an Ohioan. To them, Zach is the perfect example of an Ohioan — the bread and butter, blue collar people, who love their state and have a lot of pride in who they are when they represent their state.
The video started spreading, and it wasn’t long before it got back to Meadows. That meant his superiors saw it, too — but he didn’t get in trouble for his actions. “When I woke up the next morning, I had all these text messages; people trying to call me, including the vice president of Wendy’s; all my fellow managers congratulating me,” he said. “It was humbling for sure. At noon the next day the video had about 75,000 views.” Zach said. “I don’t want to turn anyone away from not eating — no matter who they are or what they do — it’s something I would’ve done regardless of our situation.” Martin hopes that all the attention his video is getting benefits Meadows, and Meadows hopes that more people will be inspired “to do nice things for the people around them.”
