“I’m sorry, Lisa, but Debbie and I are going to move back into the house. You’re going to have to find another place to live.”
I couldn’t believe what Neil, my landlord (房东), was telling me on that warm April night. I had tears in my eyes, and so did he. I had lived in his Staten Island house for more than twelve years.
Neil had never raised my rent, which was $750 a month, very cheap for New York City. This was a big comfort when I was laid off from my newspaper job and couldn’t find any work for two years. He promised me that I would always have a home, even if I had a hard time paying the rent. But now, I was going to have to find a new apartment and pay more.
Although he gave me six months to find a new place, I was still astonished and worried. So I called Jon, my best friend, to complain about my bad experience. But Jon surprised and annoyed me.
“Look on the bright side.” he said. “Maybe you will find a place you like better. Do you remember you complained all the time about the crowded bus to and from the house? Why don’t you find a place where you don’t have to take that bus?”
“How can you say that?” I shouted at him. “This is way out of my comfort zone!”
“Come on, Lisa. Did it ever occur to you that change could be good?” Jon said.
“No!” I screamed and hung up on him.
I felt upset for the next few days about our argument. But what if Jon was right? Why did I assume that every change would be bad? Maybe my life needed to be shaken up.
That summer, as I started looking for apartments, I began to think about new possibilities. Maybe I could find an apartment with better furniture.

I will never forget what happened when I was at the age of 10. It was one week before Children’s Day. I was looking forward to my gifts. Given the fact that I was the youngest in my family, the other members would like to give me a different gift. Whatever the gift was, I was always more than glad to accept them. Undoubtedly, I was being taken care of. Naturally, it was feeling so good.
In most cases, my uncles would ask me smilingly what I desired before Children’s Day and that year I was eagerly waiting to be asked. What a beautiful spaceship it was! That flashed across my eyes when I opened a big gift box. However, it greeted me against my expectation that year.
It was exactly one week before Children’s Day. Just one week, she could hardly wait. My dear mother told my father she, my future-to-be little sister, would come to the world. Immediately, we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had the little sister. I didn’t want her but I wanted a spaceship. The days that followed went so fast. No one was taking care of me. Everyone was talking about her. My life would go off the beaten track. I had no intention of being a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Children’s Day, everyone in my home was paying closer and closer attention to my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles asked me nothing about the gift again. She stole everything I’d ever had. My life and presents were completely spoiled. On thinking of this, I couldn’t help crying in the middle night sleep. Suddenly, I had a nightmare and was startled (吓一跳) awake. Shadows being all around me, I was defenseless and helpless. I rushed into my parents’ bedroom but they were sleeping so soundly that I couldn’t wake them up. They were just stressed out and worn out. Standing near their bed, I tried not to cry when I saw her. She was wide awake, looking at me with her big eyes twinkling in her small bed.

Twelve Days of Kindness
Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.
“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota. I really miss them and my friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rachel.
“I know, Rachel. So would I,” I said. “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don’t you remember how hard it was to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to-30℃ on our way back?”
“I remember,” she said and ducked her head disappointedly.
We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.
We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren’t expecting anyone. Hesitantly, Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom, there’s a big box on the doorstep and nobody is out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody insight.
They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas paper. Each had a typewritten note: Open Dec.14, Open Dec.15...There were a total of twelve—the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” The note read: Our LOVE is given anonymously(匿名地), so enjoy fun with your family, but don’t tell anyone please.

One day an elderly, barefoot postman knocked on the door of a house and said, “Your letters come.” As soon as he said this, a little girl’s voice echoed from inside, “I’m coming now. Please wait.”
But 5 minutes later, no one turned up. The postman said again, “Is there anyone to take your letter? I have many places to go ...”
The girl replied, “Sorry, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. I am coming; it will take some more time ...”
The old postman replied, “No, I have to wait. It’s a registered letter, so someone’s signature is needed.” After about 10 minutes, the door finally opened.
He was about to shout at the girl when he was shocked to find that in front of him was a little, legless girl on a wheelchair. The postman quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left. That day, he got her name Melka.
Melka often lived alone during the daytime, as her mother passed away and her father worked far away with only a maid taking care of her in the morning and evening.
After that day, whenever mails came, the postman would knock and then wait patiently at the door. Little by little, interaction and closeness grew between them. The postman knew that this lonely girl seldom went out and she was crazy about everything to do with nature. Melka also noticed that the postman always came with no shoes. On a rainy day, when the postman left after giving the girl her letter, his footprints were left on the wet soil. Melka came out with a piece of paper, put it on the ground and took down pictures of the feet.
Diwali, known as a festival of lights, was about to come and people were busy preparing gifts for their family and friends. The postman also started thinking that he shouldn’t meet the girl empty handed. After much thought, he decided to give her a special present. But due to his tight budget, he had few choices.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a diffident 10-year-old, I’d sworn (发誓) off swimming for life the day my friend pushed me into our neighbourhood pool. The incident only made me fear it more. So when my husband turned out to be a so-called ‘water baby’, it felt ironic to say the least. My husband belongs to the competitive swimmer, cliff jumper and extreme water-sport lover. Me? I panic when the force of the shower is stronger than usual.
In those early days, we were both eager to please and forgive each other ‘sf avorite hobbies. For our honeymoon, we chose the Maldives-fashionable, beachy and romantic in equal measure. My husband knew about my aquaphobia (恐水症), but assumed its cause was a lack of experience in the water.
So, on the second day of our trip, bored of snorkelling (浮潜) by himself, he convinced me to sit backseat on a jet-ski while he drove. Five minutes later, the high-speed equipment upended and we went headfirst into the Indian Ocean. A sudden stillness as the water formed a wall overhead with only the sharp reflection of the sun providing light; shock, disorientation (迷失方向), panic; and finally, when our life jackets bounced us back to safety, a feeling of fast breathlessness and many pools of tears. My husband jumped back on the vehicle in a flash while attempting to keep me calm and pull me back on as well. Once back on firm ground, I swore off water activities for good.
Some might think a one-off sudden incident like this would, in time, fade from memory. But later trips and water meets only strengthened my standpoint. I madly prayed to the gods when our private houseboat met rough waters during a stay at Capri, Italy. And on a trip to a famous spa in the Himalayas, I laid the blame for this funny fear on a previous life where I’d drowned.

On a normal day at the Brooklyn Center Liquor store, one of the things any customer would be greeted with is a warm smile from Ta Leia Thomas. She is also known as “Ace” by her co-workers.
Her kindness is something that people know about her, and this side of her was fortunately caught on film after she did an act of real concern that made people online feel inspired to share her story.
After going out for lunch, store manager Tom Agnes found Ta Leia serving customers wearing only her socks. It was an unusual sight for him, and knowing the cold weather outside, the manager was a bit concerned about what happened to her.
He decided to carefully examine the security camera footage(监控录像) to find out why Ta Leia was in her socks and had no shoes to protect her feet. That was when he found out the kind act his staff(员工) did for a homeless person.
In the security camera footage, a homeless man can be seen dragging boxes as he passed by the store. The only thing is that he wasn’t actually bringing the said boxes, but he wore them on his feet to serve as his shoes.
Ta Leia saw the man walk by and within seconds, the woman took off her own shoes and approached the homeless man. She gave her shoes to him and returned to work with only her socks on.
“I see his feet and I just took my shoes off,” Ta Leia said.
Ta Leia did not hesitate to give away her prized possession(私人物品) to help others in need. Her kindness is clearly inspiring and something that people online have found to be very uplifting(令人振奋的). Knowing that someone as kind as her is out there helping those in need is quite comforting.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段话,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Steve invited me to accompany him on a camping trip to the mountains, I imagined a cabin with a fireplace, hot cocoa, and bunk beds. Imagine how my simple, yet comfortable image of camping became a nightmare(噩梦) when Steve and his older brother, Paul, showed up with a truck filled with camping supplies-tents, rolled-up sleeping bags, and some instant food! I did pack a backpack, as instructed, but I had no idea we were going on survival training!
Paul, ever so efficient, had a schedule to keep, and he hurried me to get in so we could leave the city hustle and bustle(喧闹) behind us. Ahead, the mountains appeared bigger than I had remembered them; the trees were larger, and the environment was much more dangerous. At least the weather was amazing-cotton-candy clouds dotted the deep blue sky.
At the trailhead(登山口), Paul tied a sleeping bag onto my pack and lectured Steve and me about hiking manners.
The first part of the trail looked more like a wooded road that led up the mountains than a hiking path. Soon, the path became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus on the task at hand and to talk less. As we gained height, we moved above the tree line, and I could see the trail zigzagging(蜿蜒) up the mountain.
“It looks closer than it is,” Paul said, reading my facial expressions. “This is the most difficult part... watch the trail, not the view. Loose rocks and tree roots make the trail dangerous, and we have no shade.”
Finally, we reached the top of the mountain. My legs aching, I dropped my pack and groaned(呻吟). “No time to rest,” Paul said, looking up at the sky.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. When Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house far away in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester (护林人) worked.
After a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, Steve started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to a place near the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

Allen was playing in his room. He heard a familiar chirping and rustling from the cage in the bedroom corner. It was his beloved Blue Finch, named Mary. The boy had cared for the bird since he was six, a gift from his mother for graduating from kindergarten and entering primary school. Now, at 12 years old, Allen had just recently celebrated his primary school graduation and was about to take another step in his life journey toward junior high school. For the past six years, Mary was his constant companion and closest friend.
As he grew up, Allen found it difficult to make friends or be close to others. Having had to move around many times and transfer schools due to his father’s work in the military, Allen never felt like he truly belonged in any one place. He always knew it wouldn’t be long before he would have to move yet again. The stress and pressure of a constantly mobile life also led to strain and pressure at home, leading to loud arguments and fights between his mother and father which he could hear from behind closed doors.
But, throughout all of this. Allen’s closest friend and companion-the true source of stability in his life — was Mary, his finch. But Mary was more than just a simple, calm pet: whenever Allen felt sad, the bird would always be singing and chirping, almost as if she sensed how he felt and wanted to lift his spirits. And when Allen fed the bird, Mary always moved across her branch to rest against his finger, never failing to bring a smile to Allen’s face. Yet, one summer day after Allen had come home after a walk at the park he found the window of his bedroom open and the door of Mary’s cage open-the-bird was gone. Suddenly, Allen realized that he must have left the cage open after cleaning it and forgot about the window being open on such a hot day. Upset, Allen fell down to the floor sobbing.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.
However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.
When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to get a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A beautifully dressed lady got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.
The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.

1.One possible version:
Finally, that October, I spotted the apartment of my dreams in a new home in a nice neighborhood. The place had a stainless-steel refrigerator and a microwave oven. It also had central air-conditioning. What’s more, the new place was close to the train and the express bus. Thus, although the apartment was a little expensive, I decided to move in. It took me a few weeks to get the place fully in order, but I remember how proud and happy I was to show my new house to my friend, Jon, one Saturday night when he came over for dinner.
As time went on, I found myself doing more things out of my comfort zone and feeling more positive about life. I started to address being overweight. I ran regularly, which helped me lose eighty pounds. I also started to get out of my comfort zone professionally. As change upon change built up in my life, I felt like I was a different person. My life had improved in so many ways, and it all started when I moved out of my old apartment, took a risk and found a new place to spread my wings.

All of a sudden, a slim shadow danced in the bedroom, startling her. In that split second, the slimly dancing shadow startled me. It took me what seemed a century to realize a tree waving in the violent wind was reflected on the window. Meanwhile, she began to cry, her mouth wide opening, arms waving and legs kicking. Obviously, she panicked too. Startled as I was, I tiptoed closer to her little bed, held out my hand to stroke hers, patted her on the back with the other. She stopped crying knowingly and grinned from ear to ear with her eyes twinkling again. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Having comforted her, I felt some change slowly happened to me. My loneliness was disappearing out of nowhere now. Instead, a sense of responsibility as an elder brother was overwhelming me. Not only did her arrival take over the center of the whole family initially but also she started to become the center of my attention too. Her cute round face and sparkling eyes arrested my love for her. I looked around and found parents awake and smiling at me warmly. It was just at that moment that a shadow of a happy family dancing in the gentle wind was reflected on the window. It was just at that moment that I knew from the bottom of my heart that my little sister was the best gift I’d ever got.

After that, we opened one more gift each day. Before uncovering the box, we would sit around the table expectantly and made wild guesses at what each package contained. Then came the exciting moment when the mystery would be solved. Everybody would roar with laughter. As each package was unwrapped, we realized it was an unknown Canadian friend who was thinking of us, loving us, and wishing us a wonderful Christmas. Amazement never ceased and the gift opening eventually became a part of our daily routine. We all looked forward to the arrival of Christmas.
We opened the 12th package on December 25th. We couldn’t contain our excitement, anxious to witness the final surprise. Inside the box was a note which read: “A Christmas tree and a Christmas dinner are awaiting you on the doorstep. Merry Christmas!” Rachel sprang to the handle and swiftly pulled the door open. At the sight of the pleasant surprise, Rachel jumped with joy and screamed with excitement. Tears misted my eyes and we were so thankful to be loved! But for the stranger’s generosity, our family wouldn’t have gone through such a happy Christmas.

Suddenly he thought of the wild flowers along the road and an idea struck him. Why not send her some fresh flowers? On the morning of Diwali, he picked a variety of wild flowers with bright colors, hoping Melka could smell the scent of nature. Then he went to the girl’s house, knocked at the door and waited patiently as usual. “I’m coming,” a familiar voice replied. After about 10 minutes, the girl opened the door and was greeted with a bunch of vibrant wild flowers. “What a beautiful bunch! I love it so much.” Melka said excitedly, struck by its beauty. “Please wait for a while!” She turned around and went into the house.
After a while, she returned with a big box. “This is a gift for you.” In amazement he opened it and there lay a pair of new shoes. Never had he imagined receiving such a thoughtful gift. “Try them on!” To his surprise, the shoes fitted perfectly. Relieved and happy, Melka explained that she had noticed his bare feet and taken down his footprints. With misty eyes, the postman stroked the girl’s hair, saying, “Thank you, Melka. You are really a little angel.” Two kind souls warmed each other on that special day. Sometimes, it’s not the present but the caring attitude that counts.

5. . My vacation plans involved lots of sun and sand. My son loves both the water and animals, and he was most excited about seeing sea creatures up close. Once when he set off with my husband to enjoy their on-the-water fun, I was left out in the cold, fearful and lonely. Mostly though, I worried that my son would think me weak. Or worse, stick to shore like me. It’s one thing to dislike swimming but trying a few easy activities while wearing a life jacket can’t be too bad, I thought.
So, I did it. I forced myself to take part in as many water-based activities as I could, including taking a dangerous family ocean ride on the “water sofa”, which had us holding a seat for dear life, while a motorboat pulled us with my son joyfully shouting, “Top speed!” while I joined in with cries of, “Please slow down!” Somehow, all I seem to recall from that trip is the look of happiness in my son’s eyes as he discovered a tiny sea creature in the shallows or held our hands tightly as we skimmed over the waves.

7.The weather up here changed quickly. Accompanied by fierce winds and rolling thunder, dark clouds took control of the blue sky in the blink of an eye. I was frightened by this sudden set of changes, however, Paul calmly instructed Steve to put up a tent. They quickly picked a flat spot, carefully laid out all the equipment, and expertly raised the tent. The moment the tent was set up, heavy rain poured down and we took shelter inside. “Don’t worry! This is just a typical summer storm-they’re intense, but short lived,” Paul comforted us.
And just as quickly as the storm came rushing in, it cleared up, allowing us to exit the tent. Outside, the view was stunning—all the mountains were covered in mist, and a fresh scent of trees and an earthy smell of soil left by the rain floated in the air. Darkness set in as we were fascinated by the magnificent scenery, so we decided to make a fire, around which we enjoyed both our food and the night sky dotted with shining stars. I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.

9. Upon hearing the noise, Allen’s mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she’s…she’s gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don’t worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence, “Let’s move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen’s mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him back up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary’s name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another-eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in times of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen’s cupped hand. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen’s heart.

As we stepped into the next door, we found the boy and the girl crying hopelessly beside their mother, who was lying at the bottom of the staircase where she had fallen. My mother tried to comforted the two kids while my father ran over to check how terrible the situation was by trying to speak to the poor lady, but she wasn’t responding to anything.
Father called for an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital. My parents brought the children back to our house. Mother fed them some hot soup to calm their nerves. The kids told us that their father was away on a business trip, so we helped them contact their father who promised them he would catch a plane and join them as soon as possible. So they stayed the night with us. My sister and I had to give up our room for them but we did not mind. Before they went to bed, we shook hands and became friends.
