The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.
Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”
The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.
After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.
After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery. Their wrestling coach, Jim Zeigler, arrived at the hospital along with the rest of the team to offer support.

The weather was extremely hot as the midday sun shone with all its might. 23-year-old Richard had just gotten down from a truck he hitchhiked(搭便车)and could barely stand on the hot road. His feet were getting baked in his smelly sneakers. He panted heavily, looking around for a drink. But as far as his sunken eyes could see, there was not a drop of water.
Since Richard’s band in Los Angeles broke up several weeks ago, he had to come to reunite with his parents. Just as he finished a two-mile hike on the deserted highway, he stopped on the roadside. Suddenly, he noticed a little bike lying there.
When he approached near, he saw a water bottle and a small helmet lying nearby. He leaned closer and noticed fresh little muddy footsteps disappearing into the woods. Richard’s brows shot up in terror as he hurried toward the entrance of the dense forest. It seemed very unusual for a little kid to be all alone there.
Imagine a little kid out there alone! Richard’s instincts(直觉)told him something was wrong, so he cupped his hands around his mouth and called out to the child. Suddenly, he heard a faint cry from the heart of the woods. It was a little girl’s cry for help.
“Don’t give up! I’m coming!” Richard ran quickly after noticing a little girl and her dog holding onto a log(原木)and floating on the river.
The current was washing away almost everything on its course, and the girl was lucky that the log was stuck onto something under the surface. But that would not hold on for long as the current grew faster and stronger.
Richard wanted to pull the two out to the shore before they were washed toward the edge of the waterfall, which was just meters away. However, he couldn’t think of anything immediately. Just then, his mind acted fast, and he ran back to get something.
“Hold on…I’ll be right back,” he assured her.

A Surprise Job
Tiegan always liked to sing. Her earliest memories all have songs in them. Tiegan liked to sing in the bath tub when she was getting ready for bed, and she liked to sing in the morning while she walked to school.
Sometimes, though, Tiegan’s family liked the house to be quiet. Mom liked to solve crossword puzzles, and Dad liked to watch the news on TV each night. “It’s quiet time, Tiegan,” they would say. Then Tiegan had to find something else to do. She had plenty of puzzles and games, but she didn’t like them as much as singing.
One summer day, Tiegan was singing her favorite songs in the living room, Dad came downstairs and said, “Tiegan, I have a headache. Can you go outside and play? I really need it to be quiet so I can take a nap.”
Tiegan sighed and went outside. It was a sunny day, and many people were outside riding bikes and walking their dogs. She sat on the roadside and looked around. Then she started to hum(哼歌). She was careful to be quiet at first, but soon the humming turned to singing. “Dad probably can’t hear me anyway,” she thought, ”so it’s probably okay to sing outside.“
The sun was very warm, and Tiegan took off her baseball cap. Now she could feel a cool breeze across her forehead, which felt nice. She dropped her hat on the sidewalk and kept singing.
Just as Tiegan finished one of her favorite songs, a man with a small dog stopped in front of her. ”That was a beautiful song," he said. And he dropped a dollar into her hat. Before Tiegan could say anything, the man walked away with his dogs.
Tiegan wasn’t sure what to do with the dollar, but she did want to keep singing. As she started her next song, their neighbor Mrs. Maudslay came out of her house and looked over the fence.

A Perfect Match
This story is a miracle. A dog, separated from her owner for many years, finally returned to her side.
As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, Renae’s grandmother surprised her with an adorable gray puppy named Chloe.
From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned more. “She was such a sweet dog,” Renae says. “She’d lick your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”
But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with a piece of bad news; He’d be working from home, and the house needed to be free of audible (听得见的) distractions.
“Chloe was very yappy (喜欢叫嚷的),” Renae says. “I was just a kid, so I didn’t have any choice in the matter. I didn’t want to get rid of my dog. I just felt so sick and sad about it.”
With no easier option, the family surrendered Chloe to a humane society (动物保护协会). Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure. “I called the humane society to try to find out what happened to her,” Renae says, “but they couldn’t tell me anything. So I never knew.”
In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. But her family didn’t feel quite complete. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe—she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.

When I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff, I was very upset. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything because when we first met, we got along so well. It was as if we’d known each other forever.
“No way!” I said, as I sat next to her on the first day of karate (空手道) camp. “Are those banana chips in your lunchbox?”
“You like banana chips?” she said in a surprised voice. “They’re my favorite snack.”
“My aunt brought some the last time she visited, and I’ve been craving (渴望) them ever since,” I said.
“I guess today’s your lucky day,” she said, handing me the bag. “We have a big box that’s kind of taking up space in the cupboard. So, you’d actually be helping me out!”
Right then is when I knew that Karina and I were meant to be friends forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. The more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both had two adorable cats, we both had an awesome younger sister, and we both had the same favorite song.
But then something happened. Karate camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of large old trees on it. Whenever it was nice out, we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.
After we finished lunch, our coach, Miguel, reminded us to keep the forest as clean and perfect as it was when we got here.
And that’s when things got complicated.
Sam, one of our teammates, asked us, “Have you guys heard that shopping mall rumor? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.” To my surprise, Karina said, “My parents told me the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really needed work and people’s jobs were more important than trees.”
Paragraph 1:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees.

The Impolite Boy
James Selton was one of the most insolent boys in the village where he lived. He would rarely pass people in the street without being guilty of some sort of abuse.
One afternoon, just as the school was dismissed, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a cane in his hand, on the end of which was a bundle, and he wore a broad-brimmed hat.
No sooner did James see the stranger, than he winked to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, and, knocking off his hat, ran away.
The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before he could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again did James approach; but this time, the man caught him by the arm, and held him fast.
However, he contented himself with looking James a moment in the face, and then pushed him from him. No sooner did the naughty boy find himself free again, than he began to pelt the stranger with dirt and stones.
But he was much frightened when the “rowdy”, as he foolishly called the man, was struck on the head by a brick, and badly hurt. All the boys now ran away, and James skulked across the fields to his home.
As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see.
She told James that their uncle was now in the house; that he had brought beautiful presents for the whole family. She said that while he was coming through the village, some wicked boys threw stones at him, and hit him just over the eye, and that mother had bound up the wound. “But what makes you look so pale?” asked Caroline.
The guilty boy told her that nothing was the matter with him; and running into the house, he went upstairs into his chamber. Soon after, he heard his father calling him to come down. Trembling from head to foot, he obeyed. When he reached the parlor door, he stood, fearing to enter. His mother said, “James, why do you not come in? See this beautiful watch, which your uncle has brought for you.”
Paragraph 1:
What a sense of shame did James now feel!

The sound of breaking glass was immediately recognizable. Hearing the sound, I turned around and froze. “Oh, no, not the vase,” Lisa said. “Why? What did I do?” My face turned red. “Abby, that glass vase is our family heirloom (传家宝),” Lisa replied nervously. “If you broke anything else in the apartment, I would gladly say ‘I did it’. But this time you have to tell my mom that it is your fault.” I was afraid and regretful. Why did I have to jump around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying maybe it could be fixed but Lisa said gently it didn’t look possible and that her mom would be home soon. Would her mom shout at me or punish me? I couldn’t stop playing those seconds over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.
Soon, we heard the key tun in the lock. Her mom was home. We could see she was in a good mood, “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you two to ice cream. Let’s go!” her mom said. “Before that, I need to tell you something.” I said. “We can talk later.” “No, I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking. “What is it, dear?” Her mom walked closer to me. I could feel she studied my face thoughtfully. My heart beat faster.
“I’m sorry. I broke your vase by accident. I’ve leaned it is your family heirloom. We have save the pieces, and if it can be fixed, I will pay to fix it. I’m so sorry.” Her mom looked at me expressionless and saying nothing. This scared me even more. Then she let out laughter and hugged me, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase, but I had to keep it because it was passed down in my family. Now it’s gone! You’ve done me a huge favor!” she said and kissed me again.

“Judy, hurry up! Let’s go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later, we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to seafood, we could order anything our hearts desired, no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating, as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

9.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lived on two adjoining(相邻的) farms. The elder brother is John and the younger one is Jack. One day they got a problem. It was the first serious disagreement in 40 years of farming side-by-side, sharing machines and using goods as needed. Clearly they could not get on well with each other like before and the long-time good relationship fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then it grew into a big difference. Finally, they had a quarrel with each other followed by weeks of silence. No one was willing to be the first to accept mistakes or forgive each other.
One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m a carpenter(木匠), and I am good at making chairs, tables, and even bridges. Now I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the man said. “Perhaps you would have some small projects and I could help. Could I help you?”
“Yes,” said John. “I do have a job for you. Look across the river at that farm. That’s my neighbor. In fact, it’s my younger brother! There was a piece of grassland between us. However, he recently brought his bulldozer(推土机) and now there is a river between us. Well, he may have done this to upset me on purpose, but I’ll do more. See the wood over there? I want you to build a fence, an eight-foot-long fence, so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the materials and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
John had to go to town to buy something for his farm, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he left.

It was 11 p.m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing staring down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.
Maybe she’s fishing, Conrad, then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had been broken down in an accident with seriously damaged feet, so Conrad was making a quick stop to grab some tools before heading out to help.
Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something wasn’t right about that woman. Why would she be fishing this late at night-in May, when it’s still cold in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin?
As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked some 20 feet away with his hazard lights flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take notice of it and help.
He stepped out of this car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact a rope by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He didn’t recognize the rope because he didn’t want to show her that he knew exactly what was going on.
She spoke in a silent voice, but he kept asking for more details, eventually learning from her that she was going through a particularly rough time. She was jobless, not doing well in school-in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.
“Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Conrad. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life. As he talked, he got closer with his every comforting word to the desperate woman.

But her mom realized there was a way to test the theory: Their Chloe had been microchipped (植入芯片) as a puppy. They found the ID number, then Renae took her new Chloe to the vet to be scanned. Sure enough, she also had a microchip. The numbers were a match. So Renae felt like she’d won the lottery. After years of thinking she’d never see her dog again, Renae is overjoyed to have her back. She got so excited to come home. As for Chloe, she’s made herself right at home. She knows that she’ll be with Renae forever.

5.范文一:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. Since trees were home to hundreds of small animals, I couldn’t believe that Karina could be such a cruel person who wanted to replace the lively forest with a noisy shopping mall. Overwhelmed by anger and confusion, I shouted at Karina, “How dare you wish to destroy such a wonderful forest?” Shocked by my mean words, Karina stared at me in horror and failed to say a word. After a while, Karina broke the silence, telling me the story of her parents.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. Her parents had suffered from unemployment for a long time and could hardly support the family, so she understood the importance of jobs deeply. “But I just want to save our wonderful land,” I explained in a low voice, feeling sorry and guilty. Gently patting me on the shoulder, Karina comforted me, “That’s fine.” It suddenly dawned on me that a friend was not the same person as me, but a person who accepted me. I smiled at Karina, and invited her to hang out, after which our laughter soon lingered in the beautiful land again.
范文二:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. I said, “We have to stop that. Think of all the birds that would lose their homes! Can’t we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” Hearing what I said, Karina told me super seriously, “Maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.” I felt very upset. Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren’t meant to be friends, I was thinking.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. No matter what it was, the difference wasn’t worth losing a perfectly good friendship over. We ended up having lots more fun at karate camp. And even now, a couple of months later, we still send each other funny pictures of our cats or our baking creations. No two people are exactly alike, and even the best friends disagree sometimes. What’s important is that you respect each other and focus on the good stuff.
范文三:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. I poured out my feelings on the trees being home to all the birds as well as being able to absorb carbon dioxide, with much anger overwhelming me as I almost lost my coolness. “Don’t you think people’s livelihood is more important than a patch of wood?” Karina asked me directly. “But not at the cost of cutting down trees!” I said firmly. The argument between us made me feel powerless and there seemed to be a barrier growing between us.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. Karina took my hand sincerely and said, “I never want to quarrel with you again. Maybe we shouldn’t hold on our own views so seriously, and instead, learn to respect each other.” I threw myself into her arms. All my feelings of horror, anger, guilt and grief were suddenly gone due to this comforting hug. During the following days we immersed ourselves in the fun of karate. There seemed to be delight in every heart, laughter in every face, and cheer in every step.

6.Possible version:
What a sense of shame did James now feel! Little Caroline seized his arm, and pulled him into the room. But he hung down his head, and covered his face with his hands. His uncle went up to him, and kindly taking away his hands, said, “James, will you not bid me welcome?” But quickly starting back, he cried, “Brother, this is not your son. It is the boy who so shamefully insulted me in the street!”
With surprise and grief did the good father and mother learn this. His uncle was ready to forgive him, and forget the injury. But his father would never permit James to have the gold watch, nor the beautiful books, which his uncle had brought for him. The rest of the children were loaded with presents. James was obliged to content himself with seeing them happy. He never forgot this lesson so long as he lived. It cured him entirely of his low and insolent manners.

7. Because it was not what I had expected. I had thought that I would be shouted at or even punished, but Lisa’s mom let out laughter and hugged me, kissing me on both cheeks, and even thanked me for breaking the “ugly” vase. I felt more than confused but also relieved. I didn’t have the feeling of guilt and could still go to her home to play with Lisa as usual. I didn’t feel worried about my pocket money or blamed by my mom any longer.
When I reached my adult years, I understood Lisa’s mom’s behavior and kindness. I realized how generous Lisa’s mom was and what she did made a great difference to me and my life. Now, when I receive an apology, I always consider the people’s feelings and make sure my response is fully heard and truly appreciated. I mustn’t leave any bad impression on his or her mood and life.

8.Paragraph 1:
However, what we saw shocked us. Plastic bags and single-use containers littered the beaches, and we could hardly see any undersea creature in the once crystal-clear sea. To make matters worse, the water was dark and difficult to see through. Because of the unpleasant smell, we had to cover our noses. With tears blurring our vision, we desperately wondered what had happened to our beloved village. Looking at our anxious faces, Grandfather sighed with his head bowed. It was those visitors who did help us earn more money, but they also brought massive amounts of rubbish, which caused severe pollution and changed our beautiful village completely. While telling us about the changes, Grandfather gazed at the sea, his eyes filled with disappointment and helplessness.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Grandfather’s words, we couldn’t wait to do something to tackle the pollution. Without hesitation, Sirin and I took off our shoes and walked near the sea to collect the rubbish with our bare hands. Seeing what we were doing, our family and some villagers joined us in our efforts. Some villagers fetched helpful tools, like sticks and nets, which were quite useful in catching the waste. I also pulled out my mobile phone and took photos of the rubbish floating on the surface of the sea. By posting those images on social media, I hoped more people could be aware of the pollution and lend a helping hand too. Much to our relief, our joint efforts made a difference. The seaside became clean once more, and the breeze from the sea smelled fresh and sweet again.

10.One Possible Version
When she mentioned that she was most sad about her car broken down, Conrad laughed. Replying humorously, he said, “Well, that’s better than my friend having his own car broken down and his legs seriously damaged.” The woman laughed. For the next hour he found enough topics of conversation to keep the woman engaged, who grew comfortable enough to let him get within a few feet of her. However, just as she was climbing back from the railing, she suddenly hesitated and insisted, “I am not worth it.” Conrad, with his heart pounding, threw his arms around her tightly in case she would, at any time, abandon her life.
Conrad was about to lose hope to save her when the police appeared for Conrad’s car blocking the road. Two police officers, learning rapidly the situation, took hold of the woman. Handing Conrad a knife to cut the rope between her and the bridge, they called up more police and took the woman to a hospital for observation. As for breaking the traffic rules, Conrad went out with a perfect record, with one officer so impressed by his actions. It wasn’t the first time that someone had called to seek help on this particular occasion, as the officer said, but it was rare that someone gets personally involved regardless of the consequence. This is what made Conrad unusual but respectable.
