A Dream Come True
For many years, I kept having the same dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
Deep inside, I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I longed to someday march down the hallway to receive my diploma(毕业文凭).That seemed more appealing even than getting married. But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought.Years later, I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis(幼年型关节炎)in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her going back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad. in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,”I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening, so we went there to just sign her up for night school. Linda was busy filling out register forms-when the secretary knowing me well said, “Mrs.Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”
I laughed ,“There’s no way. I’m 55.” But he insisted, and before I knew it, I was enrolled for classes in English and art.“This is only an experiment,”I warned the secretary, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

Only eight days until Thanksgiving and there wasn’t going to be enough money to grocery shop for the holiday. It was hard to put everyday food on the table for three growing teen boys with the little I earned from work. There was only a few small sweet potatoes, one can of green beans, and two chicken breasts.
The next day, I met my friend and neighbor, Aleta, at her home. Her four boys and my kids were good friends. Her husband had recently lost his job due to illness, and financial difficulties hovered (盘旋) over their household as well.
“Hey, I have an idea how we can put together a meal where everyone will have enough. ”I proposed.
“I have a few cans of green beans, about three pounds of chicken legs, and three apples. ”she said.
“Great. Let’s meet at my house at 2:00 in the afternoon. If you have some peanut butter, I have enough flour and ingredients to make cookies. ”
Four days before Thanksgiving, I had finished baking the cookies. My friend called with news about a family living in our community who needed help with food and bills. The father had been in an accident and unable to work for the last few months.
We didn’t know the family well, but my friend and I went to visit them with our holiday cookies, hoping to help in some way. While everyone chatted, I walked into their kitchen to see about the food situation. The cupboards were almost empty. No exaggeration. A single can of soup, and a box of cereal (麦片) sat alone in the cupboard. That’s it. I was shocked.
Aleta and I knew the life during hard times. We left the house, eagerly wanting to help. But what could we do? Our own finance sand food situation left nothing to spare.
Almost at the same time, our thoughts connected. Without a word, we looked at each other, asking ourselves the same question. Could we sacrifice a little more and give the family our holiday meal?

“David, it’s time for breakfast,” Mrs. Motangi called. “There’s a birthday present for you to open.”
David ran into the kitchen and saw a shiny new soccer ball on the table. He smiled and started jumping up and down with excitement. “Can I take the ball to school with me, please?” asked David. “Of course,” Mrs. Motangi said. “But you need to be careful with your first real soccer ball.”
At school, David immediately put his soccer ball under his desk. During the morning lessons, he kept quietly tapping the ball with his foot to make sure it was still there. Finally, it was break time. David seized the ball and quickly ran outside. He kicked the ball skillfully across the field to a group of students.
Soccer was David’s favorite sport. Since he had arrived in England and started school two months ago, he had played soccer every day during the break. Break was always his favorite time because he didn’t have to speak English, a language that was still fairly new to him. When he played soccer, he would forget that he felt like an outsider at this new school
“Look!” called David. “I got a new soccer ball. We can use it for our game today.” The other students exchanged glances and just stared at David. These were the most words David had ever spoken to them.
“We don’t need your ball,” said a tall boy, Jacob. “We already have one.” Jacob liked playing soccer but poorly. Jacob kicked David’s ball with all his strength. The ball soared over the school’s high fence, bounced once, and rolled to the back of a nearby house. “What a good kick!” screamed the other kids, jumping up and down and slapping Jacob on the back. David watched in horror as his cherished football went out of sight, tears coming to his eyes. What would his mother say?

Some people are just doomed (注定) to be failures. That’s the way some adults look at troubled kids. A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high. David was made to feel this way almost every day in school.
David was the most famous troublemaker in high school. He wasn’t confident and didn’t answer questions. From time to time he skipped classes and got into lots of fights. Teachers didn’t want to have him again the following year. However, things gradually changed during a weekend leadership meeting. All the students at school had been invited to sign up for ACE training, a program designed to have students become more involved in their communities.
At the start of the meeting, David was literally standing outside the circle of students, against the back wall, with that “go ahead, impress me” look on his face. He didn’t readily join the discussion groups. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in the discussion. David started to join them and he really had great ideas. The other students in David’s group welcomed his comments. All of a sudden David felt like a part of the group.
The next day, David was very active in all the sessions. By the end of the meeting, he had joined the Homeless Project team. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness. The other students on the team were impressed with his passionate concern and ideas. They elected David co-chairman of the team.
The very first community service project organized by the Homeless Project team was to collect food for the homeless in the charge of David. But a group of teachers doubted whether this crucial beginning should be in the hands of David. The principal reminded them that the purpose of the ACE program was to uncover any positive passion that a student had and reinforce (加强) its practice until true change can take place.

I had never ridden a snowmobile before. One day, my friend David invited me to the tracks outside Twisp, Washington, and I accepted his invitation willingly. I went diving, climbed mountains, and even went skydiving. Did I ever worry about hurting myself? Never! Because I was young and energetic.
Then the day finally came. We rented snowmobiles and hit the road. Wind blew through my hair as I flew over the snow. I felt great until my snowmobile sputtered beneath me. I slowed to a stop while my friend drove fast ahead on the snow-covered tracks through the woods, avoiding trees and rocks.
David headed back towards me, saying, “Did your snowmobile break down again?” I lifted my glasses. “Yes. Again,” I answered with a little discouragement. Speeding through the snow was so much fun, but sputtering to a stop every ten minutes was disappointing. We had been out for over an hour and I wanted to race over the snow.
“Why don’t we switch? I may have experience with yours.” he asked. “That will be great,” I said and climbed onto his big, shiny snowmobile, put my glasses back on and tightened my hard hat’s string.
“This one is more powerful than the one you just rode,” David reminded me. “You need to be careful with it.”
“I can handle it,” I replied confidently.
When I settled myself on the seat and started the engine, I felt its power right away. I stepped on the accelerator and set off, speeding through the snowy forest. It was amazing. The machine ran like a dream, except for a slight pull to the left that made it a bit difficult to control. With a little more acceleration, there was no pull to the left.
Suddenly, a field full of big stones came into view. I took hold of the handlebars and prepared to make a sharp right turn to avoid the stones.
My eyes dropped to my speed indicator: 89 miles per hour.

6.阅读下面材料,根据具体内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.

7.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My anger almost exploded when I was met the knowing looks that everyone gave me. Annoyance and embarrassment filled my heart. Why could Anne let out my secret? How could she do that to me? She lost all my trust and friendship.
Five years ago, Anne was new to our class. She was polite and shy, wearing a warm smile that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I had ever met. We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and hung out on weekends. We shared a lot of secrets and gave each other a lot of good advice. That was a sweet time.
However, I couldn’t expect such a big betrayal(背叛) from her. I didn’t know what made me tell Anne about my personal life. My dad lost his job, so I had to drop out of my favorite Ballet. A new pair of Ballet shoes was one of the things that we could not afford! Giving up the class made me sad, but I hoped it was just the secret between me and my best friend.
The next day when I walked by the next classroom, I felt several girls staring at me and talking in a low voice. My face turned red at their whisper like “Ballet” and “shoes”. Embarrassed and hurt, I ran away in tears.
I felt much regret to myself and avoiding Anne in and out of school. Soon afterwards, I was glad that our family moved to another town where Dad got a new job and no one would laugh at me. Anne called me many times but I didn’t answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.
I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind since growing up naturally involved many stories, both bitter and sweet ones. Five years later, with the life going on, I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.

Kindness can bring more kindness
Human beings are not just judged by the way we treat each other, but by the way we treat any creature that is powerless.
Martin was living on the streets in Bucaramanga, Colombia when a stranger noticed him at a local park. The passerby was so touched by what he saw that he filmed it.
The passerby saw Martin sitting on some concrete steps with two dogs wearing party hats. Martin pulled a small cake out of a plastic bag. He clapped his hands, sang happy birthday and petted his beloved companions. He lit two candles on the cake while his dogs observed him, and he gave them each a kiss on the cheek.
He then gave a slice of cake to each of his dogs on paper plates. As they ate together, Martin wiped tears from his eyes and petted his dogs some more.
After witnessing the sweet birthday party, the passerby walked up to Martin and asked him about his dogs. He learned that Martin had two dogs, Shaggy and Nena, and that they were celebrating Shaggy’s birthday.
He learned Martin had escaped an abusive home and had been living on the streets for the past several years. Shaggy and Nena were his only family and, even while he was homeless, Martin did everything he could to take care of them. “In so many years living on the street I was never alone,” Matin explained. “My dogs were always there to bring joy to many sad days.”
“My dog was celebrating his birthday,” Martin said again, “and I wanted to give him a quarter of a chicken, but I didn’t have enough money for that. Then I saw a lady who was going to throw away a cake and I told her to give it to me. She handed it to me, saying, ‘Take it, son, you make better use of it than I do.’”

An Honest Mistake
Mary double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool things.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
After a break, Ms. Green announced the result, “Congratulations, Mary! You did it!” The whole class erupted! Ms. Green presented Mary with her prize. Mary smiled as she read the label on the box: To Mary Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Mom, everything’s PERFECT!” Mary shouted, showing her spelling test and prize when she got home.
Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad and Kevin can see it when they get home.”
“And our cat, Kitty, too. Can you spell nicely, Kitty? And quickly and honesly, and...” Mary’s stomach tumbled (暴跌) to the floor. Honesly? H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Mary, what’s the matter?” said Mom.
“I don’t feel so good,” Mary said, putting Kitty down and putting the test paper into her backpack quickly.
Mom prepared some tea for Mary. After drinking a few sips, Mary walked slowly to her room and fell onto her bed. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all?
Soon Mary heard her dad and Kevin come in. The smell of pizza floated in the air.
Mary thought back to the last time they’d picked up pizza, after Kevin’s school play. They had almost reached home when Mom realized the shop owner had given them too much change. On finding this, Mom turned back without hesitation.
The whole time they were driving back to the pizzeria, Kevin kept saying, “It’s not our fault. The shop owner should have been more careful.”
Had Kevin been right?
Mary went into the kitchen. Dad laughed and asked her where she had put the test. After all, there need some proof if they were having the pizza to celebrate.

My first life began in November,1904.I was happy and in excellent health. Then I got married and became the father of two lovely girls. I had a good job and a beautiful home.Life was a pleasant dream.
The dream ended suddenly. Then began my second life.
I suffered from a rare disease that affected my motor abilities, first my right arm and leg, then the whole body. Every day after work I climbed up the 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door, lifting one foot up one step and then dragging the other painfully after it. Repeating the process 14 times was a huge effort for me.As time passed, I became more upset.I wondered why I had been chosen to suffer.
Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. Raindrops were beating down hard on the car when I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads .Suddenly the wheel(方 向盘)jumped in my hands as one of the tires burst with a bang . I fought the car to a stop and sat there as the terrible nature of the situation swept over me.It was impossible for me to change that tire! Absolutely impossible!
A thought that a passing motorist might stop was deserted at once. Why should anyone?I knew I wouldn’t! Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house.I started the engine and drove slowly along until I came to the house. Lighted windows welcomed me as I pulled into the driveway and sounded the horn(喇叭) .
The door opened and a little girl stood there, looking at me. I rolled down the window and called out that I had a flat tire and needed someone to change it for me because I had a crutch (拐杖) and couldn’t do it myself.

1.It was exciting to go to school again, but also tough. At first, I felt really embarrassed to be sitting in a classroom with all the kids staring at me, even though I knew they were only doing it out of curiosity. However, the first few months of going back to studying were undoubtedly challenging, for I had totally forgotten what I had learned in my younger days. Fortunately, the attitude of the teachers calmed my nerves. They didn’t say much but they behaved with great understanding. Also, as a mother of three children, I had to balance loads of housework and my kids’ needs while doing my courses.
Linda and I helped each other through. Linda would share the housework when I was up to my eyebrows with my schoolwork. And when she was down, I would stay by her side, offering comfort and encouragement. I have to say, it was a hard time for both of us but we didn’t give up. Finally, I completed all the credits needed for graduation. I glowed with pride as I was presented with my diploma. Waving my hands at Linda, I could hardly contain my excitement. At last, the unfinished business in my dreams had been finished.

Although it was late in the afternoon, they still managed to find a few “customers”. During the following three days, the kids worked so hard that they did manage to earn enough to purchase some groceries.
On Thanksgiving Day, we delivered two full bags of groceries to the family. Their young children jumped with excitement as they pulled groceries out of the bags. At the sight of this, the parents burst out crying. With grateful tears in their eyes, they offered us a big warm hug. With the help of David, they got prepared for the soccer match between classes. With soaring confidence and sharpened football skills, they put five consecutive wins under their belt and entered the tight final. 4. Two weeks later, David led 20 students in the team to collect food for the homeless. In the whole process, David was active and creative. His behavior and attitude also influenced other students in the team. They collected more than 2,000 cans of food in just two hours, which set a new school record. They all felt happy. After that, David led a second project, collecting 300 blankets and 1,000 pairs of shoes for the homeless, and then, a third one. The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article, in which David’s picture was up for doing something greater.
After David’s picture appeared in the newspaper, everyone saw great changes in him. He fully demonstrated his ability. All the teachers were surprised. They found that great changes were taking place on David. After he graduated from college, he opened his own company, where most workers were local people from his community. He proved his ability by his actions. From David’s story, we firmly believe that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending and once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest.

I tried to slow down and turn the handlebars to the right. However, the snowmobile kept going straight and didn’t slow down. I had no choice but to head straight for that field of stones. At that moment, I thought that I would be seriously hurt. But to my great surprise, I felt completely peaceful. The snowmobile hit a stone at last. However, I was launched out of the seat and sailed into the air and over the stones, with my arms straight at my sides. To my right, I heard a crash.
I eventually fell with my face down on a soft area of snow. Several seconds later, I cautiously moved my arms, and then my legs. Amazingly, I didn’t feel a lot of pain. As it turned out, I landed perfectly in a space among several big stones and my arms were straight at my sides and thus protected. Meanwhile, David rushed to the spot where I lay. Having pulled me out of the snow with all his strength, he asked anxiously, “Are you all right? Talk to me!” Seeing my smile, he breathed a sigh of relief. After a short pause, I struggled to my feet and responded, “Thanks for your timely help. Let’s have another try!”

The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. “There should be a lot of money in it. This is years of my savings,” I said to myself. I was about to break it and withdraw money when my mina came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. However, thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the piggy bank broke into pieces and the coins rolled all over the floor.
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. I explained to him what had happened. Having known my thought, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” I was overwhelmed with happiness. From that day on, you would always see me riding my bike on the street, leaving my hearty laughter behind.

7.Then, I met Linda in the market my former classmate, who told me shocking news. Linda said that after I left school the gossip soon disappeared. Everyone in our class missed me. Because I left without saying goodbye, Anne was sad for a long time. And to my amazement, she told me that Anne was not the one who brought my secret to light. It was Mary who had a big mouth and always wanted to put her nose in other people’s matters. She happened to overhear my conversation with Anne. I was all at sea, feeling that the floor had slipped away beneath my feet. Anxious and regretful, I asked Linda for any contact with Anne.
I immediately called Anne. After getting through, I sincerely apologized to her. She said softly: “Never mind. We are good friends.” I was in tears, guilt and joy. At that moment, I wished it had not happened. I wished time could go back and I could overcome my mistake. From that I got a lesson in life that we should learn to trust our loved ones, because a little mistake can lead us to ruin what we should value. Trust is the foundational principle that holds friendship. Trust is also the easiest thing in the world to lose. We need to be open and trust our friends.

Greatly touched by the strangers’ good deeds, Martin decided to pay the kindness forward. And now together with some friends, Martin spent his time volunteering and helping rescue animals living on the streets. Mary went to her room and pulled out the test paper. If Kevin had been right about the shop owner, then it wasn’t Mary’s fault to win the prize. Shouldn’t Ms. Green have been more careful? If she put the missing t back in, no one would ever know. Mary picked up her pencil and was about to write it down, when her door was knocked. It was her parents. They noticed her abnormal reaction and decided to have a heart-to-heart talk with her.
Ms. Green was unlocking the classroom door when Mary got to school the next morning. Mary gave her teacher the dictionary and pointed out the misspelled word. “I see.” Ms. Green pushed open the door. “Come in and sit down, Mary.” For a moment, Ms. Green stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. 10.She went into the house and later came out followed by an old man. Bundled in a raincoat and a hat, he asked me to sit there comfortably, and started working hard in the storm. It seemed to me that he was awfully slow and I was beginning to become impatient. Eventually, it was done, I felt the car bump as the jack was removed, and then he was standing at my car window. “The tires have been changed,” he told me solemnly. “You can drive away safely.”
I held out a five-dollar bill to her grandpa, but got no response. When I lowered the window and handed him the money, I found the old man a cripple, wet through! Shame penetrated and I was sick with an intensity I had never felt before. How could I sat comfortably in the car while an old man did all the work for me in the soaking rain! It was also at the moment that I realized I was filled with self-pity, indifference to the need of others and thoughtlessness. That night marked the beginning of my third life:I am trying to help others in my small way.
