The Dog Who Saved Our Family
We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on Valentine’s Day in 2017, and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.
We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.

Riya, an 8-year-old pupil, lived happily in a big city with her parents, who loved Riya dearly and did what they could to buy what she wanted for her. Riya was smart and excellent in her studies. Not only that, she was always ready to help others.
One day when Riya entered her classroom, she saw a crowd admiring Riya’s friend Mary’s new pen and talking cheerfully. Riya fell in love with that pen at first glance and desired to get Mary’s permission to let her use it. Seconds later, the school bell rang, sending the children hurrying to the school grounds for morning prayers.
After a while, their teacher Grace let Riya fetch some chalk from the classroom, in which Riya once again saw Mary’s delicate pen, lying on the desk elegantly. Riya took it fondly and went to her desk, ready to write on her book with the lovely pen when she heard the sound of someone walking by. Without thinking, she put the pen in her pocket and saw who it was. Jane, her other friend, was returning to the classroom. Riya immediately ran out from the back door noiselessly and went to the playground to pray
The morning prayers finished, everyone went to class, followed by their teacher Grace. The moment Mary found her pen was missing, she got annoyed. Without delay, she ran to the front and complained to Grace, saying in tears, “Someone must have stolen my new pen.”
Having quietened the noisy class, Grace asked them who was in the classroom during the prayers. Almost everyone pointed at Jane, who explained she just felt uncomfortable when praying and came back to rest. Grace asked Jane if she had taken Mary’s new pen, to which Jane said no firmly, insisting she knew nothing about that pen. But she had nobody to prove her words. Suspected and feeling sad, Jane burst out crying.
Everything happened fast and unexpectedly before Riya suddenly realized the pen was still in her pocket. She froze on the spot, afraid of being treated as a thief.

3.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Violet and Tilly were two sisters. Tilly was so stuck with her sister that she always followed her elder sister, Violet, everywhere. For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do? This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do? “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Tilly sniffed “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” She wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Violet’s chance. If she said nothing to her sister, Tilly might quit gymnastics forever.

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One night, Ryder saw his mother crying and learned she could no longer afford her last chemotherapy (化疗) treatment. He broke his piggy bank and offered her all his savings. Although it touched Annie’s heart, she told him it wasn’t enough. Ryder was so disappointed and hurried to the washroom to cry alone. It hurt him terribly to see his mother, who had long hair, and was now bald (秃头的) .
In an attempt to emotionally support her, Ryder brought an electric shaver and shaved his head. “Oh my God, Ryder!” Annie cried after seeing him. She was moved by what her son had done by sacrificing his hair. “Mom, I am with you in this. And you are not alone,” Ryder cried along, knowing little he would be laughed at by his best friends the next day.
A school fair had been organized on the playground, and many people, including parents, were gathering around the stalls (摊位). “Hey, look, someone in our class has lost all his hair!” Ryder’s friends laughed when he arrived.
“I got to carry on,” said Ryder, shyly covering his head in a hat. He was carrying two bags stuffed with some of his favorite toys, books, and recycled craft items he intended to sell at the fair.
As time passed, things were quickly getting sold in all the other stalls except Ryder’s. He did not find time to put up a fancy display or banner (横幅) to attract buyers. But he was determined to make a sale for his mother. So he took out a pen and a giant piece of paper and decided to create a sign that read: Help My Mom Fight Cancer.
“Please help me. I shaved my head to support my mother. But all are making fun of me without understanding me. And I have to sell these items and help her with some money. Please don’t let me down,” he shouted. The fair was about to end, and fortunately Ryder had managed to successfully sell most of his items.

It was a dark night in Texas when Luke Armstrong drove into town. He had a lot of things on his mind, and he was driving slowly, thinking of solutions to his problems. He had a sick daughter named Anne, and he was worried she would give in to her illness before he could gather enough money to pay for the surgery (外科手术).
Suddenly, he noticed a flashy sports car parked by the side of the road. It looked like it had a broken tire, but Luke couldn’t be too sure. He passed it without giving it a second thought and continued down the road.
He was so lost in thought that he almost missed the prone (俯卧的) figure of a human lying just by the side of the road. “What is it?” he said to himself and his truck stopped beside the figure.
It was a woman, and she was weak. Luke immediately knew he had to help her as soon as possible. He noticed her expensive outfit as he lifted her. “Perhaps she owns the fancy car I saw a few minutes ago,” Luke said to himself as he moved her to his truck and turned on the heater.
He noticed that she seemed to be having trouble breathing, so he called 911 and reported his exact location as well as the predicament (困境) he found the woman in.
Soon the ambulance came, and the woman was carried away.
After checking on his daughter the next day, Luke decided to see how the woman he rescued was feeling. He had been told she was getting treated in the same hospital. Walter has left office. His wife is dead, and he has no children. He lives a quiet life. But he has a job for a few days during Christmas every year.
He is a Santa in a big department store. Walter goes to the toy department and changes into his red Santa clothes, a red hat and big black boots (靴子). All day he sits in the toy department. Children come with their parents. They tell Santa what they want for Christmas. Most children want toys like video games, bikes, robots and fairy dolls.
Walter remembers one Christmas. It was 9:00 p.m. and the store was closing when there came a small boy and his mother. They were walking quickly towards him. “I know it is late, but please let my son talk to you,” said the woman. The woman and the boy looked tired. Their clothes were old and cheap.
Walter was tired too, but he is a kind man. “Of course,” he said in his Santa voice. “Come here and tell me what you want for Christmas.” The little boy spoke very quietly. Walter couldn’t hear him. “Santa is getting old. He doesn’t hear so well. Come closer and tell me again,” he said happily. The little boy came very close and said, “Santa, please bring me a grandfather for Christmas.”
Walter was surprised. He looked at the little boy’s mother. “Yes,” she said. “Timmy wants a grandfather for Christmas.”
“Why do you want a grandfather for Christmas, Timmy?” asked Walter.
“My Dad is dead. I don’t want a new dad. But it’s only Mom and me. It’s quiet. So I would like a grandfather.”
Walter was worried. Of course children don’t get everything they ask for. But this little boy was so serious, and his mother looked so sad.

If there was one thing that Ellen Rafferty hated more than driving, it was driving in the rain. This evening, on her way back from work, Ellen saw a little child standing by the side of the road in the pouring rain. So she hit the brakes sharply, and pulled over by the side of the road next to the child.
It was a little boy, maybe four or five, and he was shaking and hugging himself. As soon as he saw Ellen, his face. brightened. “Hello!” he said,“Are you my mommy?”
“No,”Ellen said in the icy rain. “I’m not! What are you doing here? Where are your parents?”
“Oh,” the boy said disappointingly. “I don’t know where my mom is. She left me on the road when it was raining, and I think she must be looking for me.”
“What’s your name? Where do you live?”
“I’m David. I live at the Doris Farmer Institute for Children.”
“The orphanage(孤儿院)?” asked Ellen. “But that is far!” Just then, there was a terrible flash of lightning and even more rain poured down as thunder rolled across the sky. “Come on,”Ellen said. “I’m taking you home. I’ll call the orphanage to come and fetch you.” Ellen took the boy home.
She didn’t quite know what to do with him, so she turned on a heater and wrapped him with a blanket. Then she called the orphanage and told them that she found one of their children, who named David, on the road. But the woman on the phone said it was too late and they couldn’t come to fetch him.
Sighing,Ellen hung up the phone and looked at the boy. At the same time, her cat Gandalf walked in and rubbed himself against Ellen’s legs. Ellen picked the cat up and kissed his head. “Come on, my baby,” she said softly, “Mommy’s gonna feed you...” When she looked up, she was shocked by the longing in David’s eyes,

My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus (微积分) , but he can tell you how much pressure boiler needs. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked as an electrician and a mechanic.
One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the corner was the most unusual dollhouse (玩具屋) I’d ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me?”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag—an exorbitant (过高的) figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim (昏暗的) light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree—but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment. He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad promised me.
And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I had thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was more complex (复杂的) than I had expected. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the dim light, dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

I especially like a poem I learned in kindergarten. Although it has been more than 40 years, I still often recite it.
My Teacher Mr. Moore
There’s a teacher Mr. Moore.
Who is lovely and thirty-four.
Always encouraging us to try.
He leads us to a world of “why”.
We all admire him more and more.
The author of this poem is unknown, but it reminds me of the countless teachers who have taught me. Whenever I read this poem, I couldn’t help thinking of my math teacher, Mrs. Davies. I firmly believe that she was such a teacher described in the poem.
In high school, Mrs. Davies was my math. teacher, who took her job seriously and expected her students to put forth the same degree of commitment. Though she was 30, she looked very young for her age. And she was one of the most popular teachers in our school.
Compared with other teachers, Mrs. Davies paid more attention to her way of teaching. She tried various ways to make her classes lively and interesting.
Strict but fair, she held our attention with her time-proven approach. One of her classes was for students who were more advanced academically. I chose to take it and soon realized that the course was a bit over my head. I struggled with the complex problems that others seemed to learn without much effort.
One Friday we were tested on our ability to use a theorem(定理) that no one in the class thoroughly understood. The teacher should grade our papers based on our ability to progress through the problem. I was absolutely lost. Finally, I didn’t use the required theorem. Instead, I decided to use more familiar theorems to arrive at the answer. I knew I had failed because I hadn’t done the required assignment. I became resigned to my fate.

Brutus had everything in the world: good food, good toys, and good clothes. But the problem was that he had to share them all with his three other brothers, Mack, Jack and Robert.
Brutus had to share his favorite cookie box with Mack, who always finished the whole box before Brutus could take a bite. He also had to share his toys with his youngest brother Jack, who always ended up breaking them. Brutus also had the unfortunate privilege of being given his older brother Robert’s hand-me-downs of old clothes.
Brutus hated sharing and wished he had nobody to share his belongings with. “Why can’t I be the only child?” Brutus sighed as he stared at the stars. “I wish I had no stupid brothers,” Brutus demanded at one sparkling star.
To his surprise, the star suddenly twinkled and fell towards his direction. The star inched closer and closer to his bedroom window. He screamed and tried to wake his brothers up but it was too late. The star crashed inside their room, followed by an ear-splitting explosion.
The next day, Brutus woke up with a bad headache. He rushed to his brothers’ beds to ask them if they were okay but was quickly shocked to see that their beds had been empty. They were nowhere to be found.
Brutus had the fortune of spending the whole morning playing with his toys. He put on his brother’s brand new clothes and sneakers which fit him perfectly. As he was checking himself in the mirror, he suddenly realized that his wish had come true. His brothers were gone and he had the whole world to himself.
“I can get used to this,” he said to himself happily

I opened the door and found Max was running around the living room, trying to let all the things fall down. These abnormal behaviors really confused me while it also made me a little afraid.

As I approached the kitchen, I could obviously smell a strong burning scent and instantly knew what had happened. When I saw the fierce fire in the kitchen, I dashed into my children’s room like an arrow, waking them up at my maximum voice. Rushing out of the house together, I called 911 and asked our neighbors for help at the same time. Fortunately both my family and my house were saved. Thanks to our smart Max, we did escape from death.

He was about to leave when his three friends surrounded him. “Not now, guys. I’m leaving. Quit it,” he begged. He thought they had come to laugh at him again, but to his shock, they took off their hats, and their heads were shaved clean. “WHAT? Why did you guys shave your heads?” Ryder was startled. “What’s going on?” As it turned out, the boys saw his sign about his mother, and they were moved by it. They felt guilty for picking fun at him.
“Ryder, please take this as well,” he heard a parent calling him. He turned around and saw a group of his friends’ parents approaching him. They contributed more money, and Ryder had approximately $11,000 with him in no time. He was so moved and thanked everyone for their heartwarming gesture. “Don’t thank us, Ryder. He was trying to find more solutions when he received a call from an unknown number. It was the head physician of a very expensive hospital, and he had great news. “I’m calling to arrange a suitable date for your daughter’s surgery. Someone has generously offered to pay for its cost,” the man said.
Who might be kind enough to pay for the surgery? Luke thought to himself, wandering outside of the operating room. Fortunately, the surgery was successful. Luke was very happy but also very confused as he did not know who to thank. He asked his friends and relatives if they had donated the money, but in vain. Let’s create the dollhouse together.” “But, daddy, I don’t know how,” said I. “That doesn’t matter. I will teach you,” said my father. So every night when he worked on the dollhouse, I would sit by his side and he would patiently and lovingly teach me how to make such a toy. It was really not easy, but our efforts paid off and we finally made it.
In all, it took one month of hard work by us. My joy was beyond description at that moment. Then I heard my father saying, “I can build a lot of things, but I can’t build your life. All I can do is to help you build your own.” I would always remember his words, so the dollhouse became the most special gift to me. Long after I gave up playing dolls, I would occasionally bring it down from the attic just to admire it and remember those days when we worked together to bring my dream to life.

9.Our test papers were handed back the following Monday. Everyone received a “C” except me. To my surprise, I received an “A”. I assumed that there must be a mistake. I watched nervously as the teacher approached my desk, smiled, and asked for my test paper back. She then went back to copy my work onto the blackboard, showing the class how I had arrived at the correct answer. ”Mathematics is meant to be a creative tool, pushing our minds to a rewarding answer," she said with confidence.
Though I didn’t use the required theorem, Mrs. Davies seemed genuinely proud of me. The class saw her fold my test paper and put it into her textbook. She announced that it would be shared with future classes. My teacher should have been justified in giving me a failing grade. Instead, she used the opportunity to deeply influence a student who often struggled. And after forty years, I still cherish the memory. It helped change my self-image. I opened up to a broad boundary of possibilities which had made my life an adventure. She understood that teaching went beyond strict demands and could be used to inspire. Thank you, Mrs. Davies.
