Darcie Hayward will have her five-year-old Alaskan Malamute, Sora, put paws on the pavement every day of the next month to raise funds for Guide Dogs Australia’s PAWGUST campaign.
The initiative, which encourages Australians to walk their dogs for 30 minutes a day for 30 days, is a cause close to the 29-year-old’s heart. Her younger blind brother Lachie, 27, was recently matched with a guide dog of his own, black Labrador Eddie in May after 18 months of tests and compatibility(相容)training.
“Since Eddie arrived, Lachie has been able to walk around without his cane(手杖), feeling like he is just walking his dog, ” said Darcie, who lives in Langwarrin, Victoria. “They are best friends. ” Seeing the difference a guide dog made to her brother, Darcie was overjoyed to be raising funds, so other Australians could one day have their own companion dogs, like Lachie.
“Many people see a guide dog and go, not realizing how much it takes to raise a guide dog puppy so I want to raise some awareness, ” said Darcie. “It’s amazing to see how Lachie’s life has improved, but there are many people without that companionship. It’s really nice to be able to contribute in any way I can. I shared the experience on our local community web page, mentioning we are raising money for guide dogs. Surprisingly, a couple of strangers donated. ”
It seems that Eddie has already been a popular pup with the locals. “There are so many kids who have been asking to pat Eddie that Lachie has to reject them, ” Darcie added with a smile. Excited to be making a positive impact by walking her own dog, Darcie is eager to encourage more people to fetch their leashes(牵狗用的皮带) and tie up their trainers to take action.

“All of our senses convert (转换) physical energy in the surrounding world into electrical responses. which are the common currency that the nervous system uses, “ said James Hudspeth from Rockefeller University.
Hudspeth said, “Our ears have to convert mechanical vibrations(震动)in the air into electrical responses. And the way this is done is that there are so-called hair cells. These cells have little microscopic bristles(刚毛), about a hundred of them, and on the top of each cell, these bristles vibrate back and forth in response to sound. That sets up an electrical signal that goes down a nerve fiber and into the brain. ”
Hudspeth continued, “The real question is what happens with these hair cells as they degenerate. We lose them owing to loud sounds and certain drugs, and we lose them with ag- ing. What can be done to repair them so that we can restore hearing?”
Another expert, Robert Fettiplace said, “Well, I mean there are two aspects to this, one of which is that you could try and regrow them. Almost all hearing loss is due to death of the hair cells or lack of formation of them in the first place. The cells are all different. ”
Hudspeth said, “The problems that Robert has mentioned go for mammals, including ourselves. The situation is different with other four-legged animals. But, in reptiles, including birds, this regeneration is going on all the time, like in fish. In fact, you can take a chicken to a concert, blasting its ears. They will nicely regenerate, and even with frequency- specific hair cells, they will reconnect, and the animal will be able to hear normally again. ”
Hudspeth added, “I agree that there is an enormous challenge, and this is certainly some- thing that won’t happen overnight in ourselves. But I don’t think it’s a hopeless task and I think basically what many people are trying to do is decode (解码) the signals sent as these hair cells develop, and by doing so to recognize the signaling pathways that might be reactivated the original development and restore hair cells by that means. ”

The tradition of giving gifts didn’t start with the modern holidays we celebrate. Many ancient cultures celebrated holidays with the exchange of gifts. People who love to give gifts often can’t wait until it’s time for the recipients to open their gifts. If you’ve ever been given a gift, you know that part of the fun is the curiosity that builds as you wonder what the gift is.
The wish to hide the identity of a gift until just the right moment led people to wrap gifts long, long ago. Historians believed wrapping gifts in paper probably started not long after paper was invented thousands of years ago.
Wrapping paper like what we use today, though, is a much more recent invention. More than 100 years ago, gifts were usually wrapped in heavy brown paper. Before that, cloth was often used. The technology to mass-produce wrapping paper didn’t come along until the early 1900s. The first American gift wrap company— Hy-Sill Manufacturing Inc. — was founded by Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman in 1903. It wasn’t as easy to wrap presents then as it is today, though, because adhesive tape (胶带) wasn’t invented until 1930.
Over the years, wrapping paper has developed into what we see in stores each holiday season. But scientists say that the United States alone produces an extra 5 million tons of waste over the holidays, most of which is from wrapping paper and shopping bags. To cut down on this waste, some people carefully unwrap presents, so that the wrapping paper can be reused. Others have started to use reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.
12.What is the interesting part of people giving a gift?

For years, people have wondered whether there’s life on other planets. Scientists may now be closer than ever to answering that question.
Using powerful telescopes, a team of astronomers in South America discovered a new planet, called Proxima b. It circles a star named Proxima Centauri, in the same way Earth circles the sun. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our solar system.
Scientists believe the new planet has a rocky surface and is similar in size to Earth. More importantly, they’ve determined that the distance between Proxima b and its “sun” gives the planet a similar temperature to Earth’s. This means it could have liquid water. The presence of water on a planet makes it possible for life to exist there. Scientists refer to planets like Proxima b as “Goldilocks planets” because they are not too hot or too cold, but just right to possibly support life.
Astronomers have found other Goldilocks planets in the past, but none are as close to Earth as Proxima b. Still, the new planet is 4.2 light years from Earth—that is about 25 trillion miles away.
Despite the long distance, astronomers hope to get a much better look at our new-found neighbor one day. But they’ll need to wait until more advanced telescopes are developed. They may also send a robotic spacecraft to investigate the planet.

Leia was fresh out of college when she began working as a member of a business-development team at a mid- size tech company. Though her skills had earned her the job, she was the youngest person in the team. “Everybody else was pretty much twice my age,” she says. “I heard about comments being made behind my back. There were a couple of times when my superiors referred to my age right in front of me, saying I was too young, ‘What does a 23- year-old know about these things?’”
Leia tried to change things by altering her appearance at work. “I changed the way I dressed. I tried to dress older, more ‘ladylike’. I changed my mannerisms and tried to act older,”  she says. “It worked,  to  an  extent.”  The comments about her age and perceived ( 认 定 的 ) inexperience lessened, but Leia says she still felt like her growth potential was limited. She left the company soon after.
What Leia experienced was ageism traditionally seen as something only older people face. For instance, older workers might be judged based on assumptions that  they won’t fit into a  progressive office dynamics or learn technology as quickly. A US study showed that nearly two-thirds of workers aged 45 and older had seen or experienced age discrimination. But younger workers face age discrimination, too. In fact, new research shows it may actually be the youngest team members who are bearing the impact of workplace ageism right now.
Leia says removing ageism entirely will ultimately require a fundamental change to corporate culture, which has long tied seniority ( 资 历 ) to skill. “We  prize years of experience  a little  too  much,  and  I don’t  think years of experience and skill are necessarily related,” she says. “Steve Jobs was 21 when he founded Apple. We don’t know how much younger people actually have to contribute. Hopefully, more employers are realizing it.”
23.What was the main topic of Leia’s superiors about her?
A.Her job skills. B.Her young age.
C.Her cute appearance. D.Her family background.
24.Why didn’t Leia stay any longer at the company?
A.She failed to dress more lady-like.
    B.She received more negative comments.
C.She felt pressure from her work to an extent.
D.She wanted more space for her growth potential.
25.Which statement agrees with the US study the most?
A.Only older people face age discrimination at work.
B.Young workers can’t fit into a progressive office.
C.Older workers are very slow technology learners.
D.Young workers are seriously affected by ageism.
26.Why does Leia mention Steve Jobs?
A.To offer information about the Apple Company.
B.To tell about Steve Jobs’ unknown contribution.
C.To say that skill does not always come with age.
D.To show that skill alone matters to young people.

English is the language for international communication, especially in areas such as science and technology. Galileo Galilei said, “Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.” Using numbers and mathematical symbols, one can write “words” and “sentences”. When appropriate, several “sentences” together might form a “mathematical story”. Mathematics has also grammar — the mathematical logic which determines whether statements are valid or not.
A math teacher compares math to English and says, “Math may be viewed as a language — a simpler, more consistent and more regular language than English. Numbers represent nouns, while operational signs (+, -,×, ÷, =) serve as verbs. Both components are governed by rules of syntax. Math facts, such as 2×3=6, may be thought of as math sentences. Students should be encouraged to speak in complete sentences to convey an entire thought. Math at the simple sentence fact level is a much easier language than English. Although math has an infinite number of nouns, it has only five verbs (+, -, ×, ÷, =) associated with four basic operations.”
Nina is an English teacher in elementary school and has 12 years of teaching experience. She has no doubts about the logical connection between English and mathematics. She says, “They are definitely languages. In both languages there are patterns and rules. They are both taught through visualizations  and  illustrations.  Teaching vocabulary is like teaching fractions. You need to illustrate in both languages and practice a lot.”
However, English and mathematics as languages are similar and yet different. The language of mathematics, for example, is precise and  less  flexible—it  cannot  afford  ambiguity,  while  natural  languages  contain  constructive ambiguity derived from their cultural and contextual wealth of meanings. Mathematics as well as English as a second language does not develop naturally as a child develops a natural language; they need to be learned.
27.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A.English grammar can also be used in math.
B.English and math are both general languages.
C.Math is the medium of international communication.
D.Both English and math have logic behind them.
28.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A.Math is much easier than English.
    B.Math is the simplest language.
C.Both math and English can convey an entire thought.
D.Math at the simple sentence fact level is much easier than English.
29.What does the underlined word “ambiguity” probably mean?
    A.Unclarity. B.Evidence. C.Certainty. D.Similarity.
30.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain the logic behind English and math.
B.To argue for the differences between math and English.
C.To compare math and English as languages.
D.To promote the development of science and technology.

A few weeks ago, Catherine asked Thomas, her 7-year-old, what he would like to be when he grew up. “I wanted to be an astronaut when I was 6”, but then Thomas said he wanted to either run a dog hotel or be a Lego designer.
As Catherine shared on the Internet: “The next day he appeared with a letter, written in his “best handwriting,” asking Lego if he could work for them.” He wisely shared that he’d be available to help with designing Legos after school, on weekends, and in the holidays—and that his sister would be eager to do the same.
His mom put the letter in the mail but also tried to manage his expectations. She told Thomas that while Lego would appreciate his letter, the company probably wouldn’t respond. According to Catherine, “He looked disheartened at my remarks and sank into the couch.”
Then a package arrived from Christian Paul, the vice president and general manager of Lego U.K. and Ireland. Inside was a Lego kit, and a handwritten letter that said:
    Dear Thomas,
Thank you so much for your letter. It is great to see how excited you are for Lego building and your creations look fantastic!
We would love your help to design even better products, but unfortunately all our product designers are sitting in Billund, which is in Denmark. We would still love to invite you to visit us in our Slough office (together with your sister and parents) for a juice/tea/coffee and a tour of the building.
My office is called “Dumbledore’s Office”—like the box attached. Let us know what time works for you!
    All the best,
    Christian
“Seeing my son light up with pride at the beautifully crafted letter,” Catherine wrote, “was something I won’t ever forget.” And neither will Thomas.
We never know when our words or actions might make an impact on another person. Small actions, like a little encouragement, a little acceptance, and a little praise, are flashing by and even insignificant to us, but are possibly life-changing for another person. Christian Pau didn’t know how Thomas might react to his letter. In a broader sense, he doesn’t know what Thomas’s future might hold. He simply took the time to respond.
It was a small moment to him—but potentially a huge moment for Thomas. As Catherine wrote, “Thank you for making my son see that it’s always worth trying.”
34.Why did Thomas write Lego a letter?
A.To ask the company to buy him a dog.
B.To request a space tour as an astronaut.
C.To set up an animal shelter with its help.
D.To offer to work for it as a part-time designer.
35.How did Thomas’s feelings change in the story?
    A.Hopeful-Upset-Surprised.
    B.Disappointed-Hopeful-Satisfied.
    C.Ambitious-Content-Disappointed.
    D.Delighted-Doubtful-Depressed.
36.What can we learn from Christian Pau?
A.He was generous with his kindness.
B.He wanted to change people’s lives.
C.He devoted his time to hunting designers.
D.He focused on every customer’s opinions.
37.Which message was NOT given in this text?
    A.Faith moves mountains.
    B.Every attempt counts.
C.A short cut is often a wrong cut.
    D.Don’t underestimate your abilities.

Soot (煤) pollution is speeding up climate-driven melting in Antarctica, a new study suggests, raising questions about how to protect the delicate continent from the increasing number of humans who want to visit.
“It really makes us question, is our presence really needed?” says Alia Khan, one of the authors of the new study. “We have quite a large black carbon footprint in Antarctica, which is enhancing snow and ice melt.”
Black carbon is the leftover thing from burning plants or fossil fuels. Soot in Antarctica comes primarily from waste gases of cruise ships (游轮), vehicles and airplanes, although some pollution travels on the wind from other parts of the globe. The dark particles (微粒) coat white snow and absorb heat from the sun the way a black T-shirt does on a warm day. The blanket of dark bits speeds up melting that was already happening more quickly because of global warming.
When snow and ice are uncovered, they reflect an enormous amount of sunlight before it can turn into heat. “These are the mirrors on our planet,” says Sonia Nagorski, a scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast. “When those mirrors are covered in a film of dark bits, they don’t send back that much light and heat. That means more heat is trapped on Earth, speeding up melting and contributing to global warming.”
As a scientist who personally visits Antarctica every year, Khan says she is troubled by her own research results. On the one hand, she goes to Antarctica to collect crucial data about how quickly the snow and ice there are disappearing. “But then when we come to conclusions like this it really does make us think twice about how frequently we need to visit the continent,” she says, “and what kind of regulations should be placed on tourism as well.” That could mean requiring that cruise ships and vehicles be electric, for example, or limiting the number of visitors each year.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.

C.It was a project organized by Toastmasters.
D.He couldn’t have people attacking his fellow scientists.
48.What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech?
A.Frustration can be a stepping stone to success.
B.Love motivates us to achieve the unachievable.
C.Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
D.Any difficulty can be overcome with great effort.

What’s the better way to experience the history of a site than to have a hand in actually preserving it? This was the thought behind the founding of Adventures in Preservation (AiP) in 2001.The nonprofit’s founders, Judith Broeker and Jamie Donahoe, were both longtime preservationists and world travelers. They had seen a great many buildings in poor condition, as well as buildings that had been “restored” without the benefit of conservation expertise.
Twelve years on, they are still involved in the daytoday management of the organisation, supported by a volunteer staff. Located around the world, Judith’s favourite projects have long been the ones in Eastern Europe, and she enjoys the opportunity to travel there each year. She, along with anyone else who’s joined the adventure, always quotes their fellow jammers, as they’re called, as the highlight of each project. The groups are made up of people from all different ages, occupations, and cultures. Yet each time, they form a strong bond and work so well together that the work becomes fun.
Raising people’s awareness of their own heritage is another part of AiP project. In many places, there is so much focus on the news that not only are heritage buildings being lost but also are the traditional building skills needed to keep them. By providing training and raising awareness of the importance of their heritage, AiP is helping keep both alive.
Next year, AiP has projects in Europe and the US. There will be even more projects the following year as projects currently under development in Ghana, Armenia, Ukraine and the US come on line. Each project is also an opportunity for travel adventure, and personal growth, and AiP welcomes people from around the world to join a project and “jam” with them.
52.For what major purpose was AiP set up?
A.To gain wonderful benefits. B.To protect old buildings.
C.To hunt for experts. D.To train new members.
53.What does the underlined word “jammers” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Machines. B.Projects. C.Colleagues. D.Organisations.
54.What about AiP does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A.Ambitions. B.Education. C.Wealth. D.Efforts.

Located in the tropical forests in Xishuangbanna, southwest China’s Yunnan province, the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center (AEBRC) is dedicated to giving careful and effective protection to wild elephants.
Though the jungles provide rich sources of food and water for the elephants, they can also pose a threat to them if they become ill or injured, making it difficult for them to survive in the wild.
In August 2015, a baby elephant that was less than one month old was abandoned by her herd at the doorway of a farmer’s house in Simiao, Pu’er city. Vets from the AEBRC came and took the animal to their center for treatment. She was found to have intra-abdominal infections and heart failure. She was also at risk of blood poisoning.
The baby elephant finally recovered after proper treatment by the keepers at the center. However, without the presence of her mother, she became malnourished (营养不良) due to a lack of breast milk. At that time, she weighed only 76 kilograms, much smaller than an average newborn elephant. The vets decided to feed her goat milk, and as she was born in the Chinese Year of the Goat, the elephant was named Yang Niu (“Yang” is Chinese for goat, and Niu means girl). The elephant is now about 6 years old, 1.8 meters tall and weighs 1.3 tonnes.
Currently, there are 11 rescued Asian elephants living at the center and being cared for by 27 keepers, who spend more than 10 hours with them each day. Thanks to these efforts, the population of Asian wild elephants in the province has reached 300 from 150 over the past 30 years.
The local government has designated (指派) a place as a source of food for the elephants so that they do less damage to villagers’ crops while looking for food. They’ve also monitored the elephants using technologies such as drones to keep track of their activities and prevent encounters between villagers and the elephants. Teenagers always dream about becoming actors. It appears admirable to be an actor. But the fact is well beyond their expectations. A successful actor will have endless meetings to attend. Moreover, a film star will have no private space, because he has too many exciting fans as well as crazy reporters to deal with. As to an unsuccessful actor, life is even tougher.
I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra money to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I took part in a lot of TV advertisements for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder.
I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put a letter in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I opened it, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus (马戏团). I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film!
When I was at drama school, there was a course in clown skills. I gained top marks in this course. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I’d had in mind when I went to drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up.
I had expected to prove myself in public and become the focus of the world. My dream was to be the brightest star and enjoyed cheers from my fans. However, now I have the opportunity to travel around the world. I am more than an actor. Actually I am a joy postman. I have visited over 32 different countries and amused millions of people.

I carried the flame in 1984 in the Torch Relay as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics that year, for which I was able to carry the flame. Still it makes me realize that all sorts of honors can come our way unexpectedly.
On one May night, the flame had just begun its journey across America, covering around 15,000 kilometers. It inched its way along the coast from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometer. Some of the runners were famous and admired. Others were common people like me and supporters of the event.
I had already. been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting in the dusk for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that ambitious distance?
All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed, not for me, but for what I represented: the free expression of athletic skills and the celebration of talent, devotion, and discipline. Soon I passed the flame on to the next runner. I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch of our faith and our values, because we can all be the light of this world. We might wonder if what we have to do or say or show will even matter. But we should step out, lit by our faith and values, and meet people waiting for us all along.

C.To show their love for sports. D.To praise Olympic athletes.
70.What does the author call on people to do in the end?
A.Keep to their values. B.Attend the Olympics.
C.Let their light shine. D.Carry Olympic torches.

根据第二段第二句“And the way this is done is that there are so-called hair cells. ”(这样做的方法是有所谓的毛细胞。)可知, 这种转化通过所谓的毛细胞来实现。故选B。
9.词句猜测题。根据第三段第二句“We lose them owing to loud sounds and certain drugs, and we lose them with ag- ing. ”(我们失去了它们,由于巨大的声音和某些药物,并且因为老化我们失去了它们。)可知, 本段引出问题“这些毛细胞退化时会发生什么”。因而划线词的含义为“退化”,选项A意思接近,故选A。
10.推理判断题。根据第三段中“We lose them owing to loud sounds and certain drugs, and we lose them with ag- ing. What can be done to repair them so that we can restore hearing?””(我们失去了它们,由于巨大的声音和某些药物,并且因为老化我们失去了它们。 第四段中“ Almost all hearing loss is due to death of the hair cells or lack of formation of them in the first place. 第五段“Hudspeth said, “The problems that Robert has mentioned go for mammals, including ourselves. 最后一段中“this is certainly some- thing that won’t happen overnight in ourselves.”(这肯定是不会在一夜之间发生在我们自己身上的事情。)
通读文章,结合文章中第三段最后一句“What can be done to repair them so that we can restore hearing?”(我们可以做些什么来修复它们,以便我们能够恢复听力?)及最后一段中“But I don’t think it’s a hopeless task and I think basically what many people are trying to do is decode (解码) the signals sent as these hair cells develop, and by doing so to recognize the signaling pathways that might be reactivated the original development and restore hair cells by that means.

根据第一段“English is the language for international communication, especially in areas such as science and technology. Galileo Galilei said, “Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.” Using numbers and mathematical symbols, one can write “words” and “sentences”. When appropriate, several “sentences” together might form a “mathematical story”. Mathematics has also grammar—the mathematical logic which determines whether statements are valid or not.(英语是国际交流的语言,尤其是在科学和技术领域。伽利略曾说:“数学是上帝书写宇宙的语言。”使用数字和数学符号,人们可以写出“词”和“句子”。在适当的时候,几个“句子”放在一起可以形成一个“数学故事”。数学也有语法——决定陈述是否有效的数学逻辑)”可推知,英语和数学背后都有逻辑。故选D。
28.主旨大意题。根据第二段“A math teacher compares math to English and says, “Math may be viewed as a language — a simpler, more consistent and more regular language than English. Although math has an infinite number of nouns, it has only five verbs (+, -, ×, ÷, =) associated with four basic operations.”(一个数学老师比较数学和英语说:“数学可以被看作是一种语言——一种比英语更简单、更一致、更规范的语言。数字代表名词,运算符号(+,-,×, ÷, =)作为动词。这两个组件都由语法规则管理。数学事实,如2×3=6,可以看作是数学句子。应该鼓励学生用完整的句子来表达整个思想。简单句子层面的数学比英语简单得多。虽然数学有无数个名词,但它只有五个动词(+,-,×, ÷, =)与四种基本运算有关。”)”可知,第2段主要讨论了数学和英语都可以传达一个完整的思想。故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“However, English and mathematics as languages are similar and yet different. The language of mathematics, for example, is precise and   less   flexible — it   cannot   afford ambiguity,   while   natural   languages   contain   constructive ambiguity derived from their cultural and contextual wealth of meanings.(然而,英语和数学作为语言有相似之处,也有不同之处。例如,数学语言是精确而不灵活的——它不能产生ambiguity,而自然语言包含了来自其文化和上下文丰富意义的建设性歧义)”其中“precise and less flexible”可推断,数学语言精确不能有歧义。由此可知,划线词ambiguity与unclarity(不清楚)意思相近。故选A。
根据第一段中的“English is the language for international communication, especially in areas such as science and technology. Galileo Galilei said, “Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.” (英语是国际交流的语言,尤其是在科学和技术领域。伽利略曾说:“数学是上帝书写宇宙的语言。”)”及第二段中的“Math may be viewed as a language — a simpler, more consistent and more regular language than English.

C项“More than an actor(不仅仅是一个演员)”最能概括本文的主旨,是最合适的标题,故选C项。
    67.B 68.C 69.A 70.C

根据第一段中的“I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics that year, for which I was able to carry the flame.(我不是奥运会运动员。那年,我爸爸为奥运会做了一些志愿工作,我也参加了传递圣火的活动)”和第二段中的“Some of the runners were famous and admired. Others were common people like me and supporters of the event.(有些运动员很有名,很受人尊敬。其他人是像我一样的普通人和活动的支持者)”可知,作者不是运动员,因为作者的父亲,作者获得了传递奥运火炬的机会。由此推知,传递火炬的人并不是都是运动员。故选B。
68.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that ambitious distance? (我有点怀疑它到底能不能到。他们能找到足够多的选手跑完这个雄心勃勃的距离吗?)”可推知,当作者在等待时,他是有点担心、不确定的。故选C。
69.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed, not for me, but for what I represented: the free expression of athletic skills and the celebration of talent, devotion, and discipline.(人们在道路两旁,当我经过时鼓掌欢呼,不是为了我,而是为了我所代表的东西:运动技能的自由表达,对天赋、奉献和纪律的颂扬)”可知,路边的人们鼓掌颂扬奥林匹克精神。故选A。
根据最后一段“I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch of our faith and our values, because we can all be the light of this world. We might wonder if what we have to do or say or show will even matter. But we should step out, lit by our faith and values, and meet people waiting for us all along.(我认为我们都有机会传递我们的信仰和价值观,因为我们都可以成为这个世界的光明。我们可能会想,我们所做的、所说的或展示的是否重要。但我们应该走出去,被我们的信仰和价值观照亮,去见见一直在等着我们的人)”可推知,作者最后呼吁人们点亮自己信念和价值观的“火炬”,发光发热。故选C。
    71.B 72.D 73.C

    【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了纽约公共图书馆有四个分馆。
71.细节理解题。根据“Van Cortlandt Library”部分“Hours are Sunday through Wednesday from 10 am to 7 pm, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.”(开放时间是星期日至星期三上午10时至下午7时,星期五和星期六上午10时至下午5时。)
根据“Kingsbridge Library”部分“As the largest branch of the New York Public Library, it includes an outdoor garden, a multipurpose (多功能的) meeting room, and a baby area. ”(作为纽约公共图书馆最大的分馆,它包括一个户外花园、一个多功能会议室和一个婴儿区。)可知,Kingsbridge Library会提供一个多功能会议室。故选D。
73.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Barbier says it is not necessary for library patrons (用户) to book seats in advance. He adds that all patrons in these branches above are required to wear masks inside the building, and children under nine should come with at least a parent. Besides, patrons are not allowed to carry their own lunch.”(Barbier说,图书馆的读者没有必要提前预定座位。
