Liam, a fifth-grader, moved with his mom for a new apartment in a relatively cheaper area of the city after his father’s unexpected death, and began attending a neighborhood school.
Since he was an introvert, the thought of making friends always made him feel nervous, and moving into a new neighborhood meant he had to face his fears. On his first day, he didn’t talk to anyone or try to make friends, and during the mealtime, he sat at the corner table in the cafeteria and ate his lunch alone. No one in the class stepped forward to welcome him. Instead, they ignored him and refused to sit next to him in class.
The next day, he was sitting alone in the classroom when a boy approached him and asked, “Can I sit next to you?”
“Sure, ”Liam smiled.
“I’m Joel. And you?”
“Liam. ”
“Is it your first day today?”
“No, it’s my second day. I recently moved into this neighborhood. ”
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I skipped school yesterday, so I thought it was your first day today. ”
As days passed, Liam and Joel discovered that they lived on the same street. After school, they often played catch in the nearby park, a game they both loved playing. It only took Liam a few weeks to become best friends with Joel.
One day, Joel skipped school, and Liam had to sit alone in class, wondering why. Feeling worried, he went to ask his class teacher.
“Liam, I’m so sorry, but your best friend got into an accident last night, ” the teacher put her hand on Liam’s shoulder. “He lost his parents in the car crash. ”
“Oh no!” Liam covered his face with his hands.
Two months later, Joel was allowed to go home after a spinal surgery. However, he couldn’t walk and was restricted to a wheelchair. The day he arrived home with his grandmother, Liam rushed to Joel’s house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with.
Joel’s eyes lit upon seeing Liam. The boys talked to each other for hours before Liam’s mother came to pick him up at night.
While he was happy to see his friend after months, he felt terrible knowing Joel could never walk again. Moreover, seeing his elderly grandma struggle to push the wheelchair made Liam feel even worse.
“Mom, I feel so bad for Joel, ” he told his mother at the dinner table later that evening.
“I can understand, sweetheart. But you don’t have to feel sad. You can help your friend adjust to his new lifestyle and make him feel better. Pitying him would make him feel worse. ”

Pamela Jones is a nurse, mom, and grandmother and she has over 25 years’ experience in the field of medicine. After she graduated from her medical school with her medical degree, she was devoted to numerous hospitals in Michigan and more. She is also a volunteer of a non-profit organization, which mainly helps some people suffering from different kinds of slight diseases and offers some medical care.
Last Tuesday, Pamela was driving on the way home after seeing a patient. She was traveling westbound on 1-276 around 8:30 pm. Then suddenly, she was hit by a car that switched lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Her car tuned, flipped over and crashed into an embankment. Her car was badly damaged. The causing-traffic-trouble car was damaged too, but it fled away. Thankfully, she survived. However, she could not remember much about what happened.
Saving lives is a daily thing for Nurse Pamela Jones. But, at this time, it was she who needed to be saved. Unfortunately, dozens of cars moved past her but no one took the time to stop and help her. “There must have been 150 cars that drove by,” Pamela recalled. She couldn’t move and her phone was out of reach, so she had to wait for help in her car.
Mike Lottier and his son Drew were driving on the way home, too. They had just returned from the city where Drew’s grandparents lived. It was Drew who first found her car. He noticed that glass debris was everywhere, the sunroof was destroyed, and the car was crashed out of shape. Seeing these, Drew shouted, “Dad, there is a car accident ahead.” Mike drove slowly toward the damaged car. Soon they arrived at the scene.

Eartha lost her balance and fell heavily onto the floor. “I’ll never be as flexible as you are, Grandma.” she sighed softly.
Eartha’s Grandma had been practising yoga for more than 50 years, who could twist, bend and curl her body with ease. She could even stand on her hands and pull her body into different poses.
“Eartha, your name means ‘patience’.You need patience for yoga,” said her Grandma.
Like many schools in the country,Eartha’ s school held an annual yoga competition. Eartha wanted to make her Grandma proud. But she could hardly stand on one leg.
Grandma returned to the kitchen.Eartha kept practicing hard. She stood straight, her arms at her sides. She moved her hands and knees, arching her back. All of these poses were easy, while the competition was certain to be harder. So she tried more challenging poses, lying on her stomach and pushing up on her hands. Her arms soon got tired and she collapsed to the floor. Eartha wandered into the kitchen.
“Finished already?” asked Grandma.
“It’s hard,” Eartha said. “How did you get to be so strong?”
Grandma smiled. “Patience.”
The next morning, Eartha felt ached and sore all over the body. Her legs hurt so badly from the poses she practiced that she even wanted to quit. However, her grandmother’s words echoed in her mind, and she held the pose for a longer time.
Each day Eartha would practice anew pose, before going over the poses she had practiced the previous few days. With the date of the competition approaching, she started to feel stronger and more flexible. Her arms and legs stopped trembling.
The day of the yoga competition arrived as expected. In the gym, Eartha lay on her back with her knees bent and placed her hands on the floor behind her. Everything went smoothly. Just then,so eager was she to win Grandma’s pride that her poses displayed a mix of impatience, and rigidness. Eartha fell on the mat, which cost her edge over other competitors. A bell rang, ending the first half of the competition.

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan? Do you want flowers?” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me?”
“A job?” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I’d be delighted to have you here.”

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

注意:
I’ve spent my adult life as a college professor teaching people how to think more creatively and use more of their brainpower. Interestingly, this lifetime passion was awakened by a casual contest when I was a child.
At a family picnic for employees of the company where my father worked, they held a handkerchief-throwing contest for the children. I was 13, full of enthusiasm and the spirit of competition, so I threw myself into the contest, which I realize now was not meant to demonstrate any real skill, but simply for laughs. But it sparked my love of thinking outside the box.
The emcee (主持人) gave each child a cloth handkerchief and told us the winner would be the one who threw it the farthest. The first throwers, the little ones, took mighty wind-ups, but when the cloth left their hands, it opened and fluttered to the ground a few inches in front of them. The next kids threw harder and harder, but with no better results. The crowd roared with laughter, and being 13, I didn’t like adults laughing at us. The older the children, the more the crowd laughed at the results.
It was obvious that using the same technique would not work. Suppose I tied a rock inside the handkerchief? No, it was “throw a handkerchief,” not a rock and a handkerchief. When they inspected it, I’d be disqualified. If I knew anything about adults, it was that they lived by rules. And they loved to seize a child who broke them.
So it irritated me to see the kids throwing harder, but still without better results. The secret was not to throw harder but to keep the cloth from opening. Suppose I hid a rock in the cloth without tying it. The rock would drive the cloth at least farther than the others, and when they separated, people might not notice a small rock landing in the grass. I had a good chance of getting away with it, but I didn’t want to win by cheating. What I really wanted to do was show them that a kid could beat them at their own game. I had to make the handkerchief fly like a rock. Like a rock! That was it!

Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes in our town of Verden. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But I was. At just five feet, one inch tall, our daughter’s lack of height wasn’t my worry. She has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different because she had Down syndrome.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. She flew into my arms and lingered long in my embrace. Unlike some sixteen-year-olds, Lauren was outwardly affectionate (亲切的).
“That’s nice, honey,” I replied automatically, and patted her shoulder. Walking into the kitchen, I kissed my wife Laura on the cheek. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.”
Just as my wife’s words sunk in, I heard Lauren behind me.
“I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she whooped, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air. She raced out of the kitchen to one of her favorite activities, watching cartoons on television. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. What should we do? Parenting seldom had clear-cut answers, and bringing up a child with a disability was an additional challenge.
Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. I settled into a seat on the second row with the rest of my family. Before the game, cheerleaders (啦啦队) were running on the court, dancing and jumping. The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. Even after a rally (反弹) in the second half, I knew the Lady Tigers were certain to lose. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points. Coach called a time-out. The announcer’s voice echoed over the public-address system. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.” My heart pounding, I watched wide-eyed. Lauren was in the game.

One particular Thanksgiving, the weather was so beautiful that Mom decided to have dinner on our front lawn. Dad built a long table, and Mom and I rounded up every chair in the house. I did the place settings and made the centerpiece — my favorite job of the year.
My aunt arrived with Uncle Gordon. I watched him walk from the street up the lawn, tall with his blond hair shining in the sun. Another car had pulled up behind them, and Uncle Gordon waited for a slim man to join him. As they walked, he and Gordon chatted. Mom came out of the house and greeted my aunt. Then, with a surprised look, she said hello to Gordon and his friend.
“Who’s this?”
Gordon smiled and told us the man’s name. “A Canuck(法裔加拿大人) from Toronto, like me.”
“Oh,” Mom said uncertainly. “Well, welcome. Leslie, get another place setting and a chair.” She turned to the stranger. “Please have a seat. We’re going to eat in about half an hour. ”I thought the man looked a little funny, but he smiled. “Why, thanks. Thanks a lot.” I did as Mom asked and set a place at the table for the stranger. I put him next to Uncle Gordon so the two friends could recall home. And they did a lot of talking.
After dinner, the man approached my mother with a smile. “Thank you for including me in your Thanksgiving dinner, Joyce. It wasn’t something I was expecting.” Mom frowned, a little confused. “Of course,” she said. “We’re glad you could be here. Do you have Thanksgiving in Canada?”
“Ours is in October. We have turkey, though, just like you.” He smiled. “But this is one of the best Thanksgivings I’ve had. I guess Americans and Canadians aren’t that different, eh?” Then again, he said, “But I never expected this.”
“Gordon’s friend seems nice,” Mom said to my aunt when we were alone in the kitchen.

I was backpacking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Barú. It is one of the only places on earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time.
I set off before sunrise. It was a bit cold, so I had pulled on leggings under my trousers. I’ve always felt safe travelling as a solo (单独) woman. I love the freedom. When I got to the base at 7 am, the ranger (护林员) was unwilling to let me go alone, but relented (缓和) because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. I walked for an hour and had reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively towards me. I could see their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as evenly as possible. But I was terrified. Then one dashed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. I was shocked. He held on for a few seconds. The pain took my breath away as I felt his fangs (犬牙) in my flesh. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one launched at me.
I tried to keep walking, and he finally let go. Then he was behind me, growling (嗥叫). I kept going, my body shaking, until after about 15 minutes I was out of their sight.
When I thought it was safe, I stopped.

Seema boarded on a tourist train with her 5-year-old daughter. It was her first travel by train. The train was very crowded. Seema grabbed hands of her daughter, fearing that the crowd could pull her daughter away. When the train started to move, a snack vendor (小贩) came through the crowd, holding on to his bag and trying to sell snacks. The vendor seemed very poor, covered in old and broken clothes.
Passing by Seema, that vendor handed out a pack of snacks toward her, saying, “Only 10 cents, madam.” Seema looked at him with disgust, then refused and asked him to move ahead but her daughter said, “Mom, please buy one for me.” The vendor was still standing there. Seema looked at him with anger and said, “Go away.”
The vendor left. Her daughter waved goodbye toward that vendor with her bracelet (手镯) shinning, and he waved back. Seema was very angry because of all the discomfort she had to go through while traveling on a train and now her daughter was sad about not buying that snack.
After some time, the train reached another station. While walking out of the train, the girl saw that vendor sitting by the train door. She said to her mother, “Mother, can we give him some money? He seems hungry.” Seema refused, saying, “Ignore him. He is not a good person. These people take away little girls in their bags.”
Seema and her daughter got off the tourist train and walked a bit. Just then they heard a voice calling them. When Seema turned back she saw that vendor was waving his hands toward them and started to walk toward them.
Seema thought of him as a stalker (跟踪狂) and started running with her daughter, ignoring shouts from behind. She was near the exit and saw that vendor was still following them. 1.A week later, Liam asked Joel to play catch with him outside and he agreed. However, when the boys started playing, Joel was missing most of the catches since he couldn’t run around. Later that night, Liam kept thinking about what his mother had said at the dinner table last week. He thought of all the ways he could help Joel and then realized the best option was to buy an electric wheelchair, which would allow Joel to move around without his grandma’s help, to play catch and do other tasks independently.
“How will I get an electric wheelchair for him? It must be so expensive! ” Liam was thinking hard when he came up with an idea of setting up a charity contest at school to raise funds. To his delight, many teachers, students and their parents took part in the contest. The money in the donation box was enough to buy Joel the latest electric wheelchair. Thanks to it, Liam and Joel continued playing catch and Joel even attended school. Eventually, Liam made more friends and never had to eat lunch alone, not even when Joel skipped school.

Eartha nodded, reflecting on her hard practices.
Calm and confident, Eartha stepped on the stage for the second half of the competition. Completely relaxed, Eartha immersed herself in poses, letting go of anything that might distract her. 5.
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

6.One possible version:
I began tying the handkerchief around itself to make it small and firmly packed, like a rock. I secretly tied knot after knot until it was the size of a little rock. When it was my turn, there were a dozen cloth handkerchiefs littering the ground. People were already chuckling, anticipating a big boy like me hurling it a few inches. I took a long wind-up, and the balled handkerchief rocketed off into the trees approximately 60 feet away. The laughing died in a collective gasp. The emcee stared at me with narrowed eyes and then ran to locate the balled handkerchief.
Before the emcee found my handkerchief, a man said, “He must have cheated.” More adults joined him and they discussed what trick I employed, ignoring innocent expression on my face. The emcee came back at last. “It’s just the handkerchief,” declared, holding it up and untying the knots. “We didn’t say he couldn’t tie it.” The adults burst into applause and I felt proud. But it was more than that. What I learned from this contest was the secret to creative thinking. If you want to maximize your brainpower, you can’t accept rules at face value.

7. Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. She was struggling to gain an opportunity to score. However, the opposing team scored again. With less than a minute left, the Lady Tigers were near their goal. I saw the coach shout and flash a signal to her teammates. Then something I consider sacred happened on the court. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and moved toward the goal. Lauren went in for a layup. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored!
Applause exploded and the thunderous sounds echoed on the court. “Lauren, Lauren, Lauren,” shouted the cheerleaders. Instead of reacting to the noisy crowd, my daughter kept her head in the game. The final buzzer sounded. Verden lost by seventeen points. A few minutes later, Lauren joined us in the stands. “Did you see? I scored!” Her brown eyes shone as she wiped sweat from her forehead. “I made a basket!” I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight. Lauren was different. My daughter wasn't like everyone else. And I was glad.

We don’t know him.” My aunt’s words stunned my mom into silence for several moments before she snapped back to her senses and started to utter again, “So... we’ve been treating a total stranger to dinner this entire evening! What if...” As Mom strived to shake off all the crazy ideas going on in her mind, my aunt beckoned Uncle Gordon into the kitchen with a wave. Upon hearing the news, Uncle Gordon’s eyebrows jerked up in surprise. “Well, at least he acted nice and gentle. You know what? Probably we should just go ask him,” my aunt proposed.
“I was, actually, lost in the neighborhood,” replied the stranger. When asked why he had come to our house, the stranger was quite honest. He described how hospitable we were when he came in, how he had no time to interrupt when Uncle Gordon dragged him into the talks about Canada, and how excited Mom was to introduce her cooking recipes. “It was such a wonderful gathering that I almost forgot my initial intention.” he continued, embarrassed. We burst into laughter and told him to ease off. Seeing him off in the right direction, I couldn’t help but think that the best way to celebrate Thanksgiving would always be to give regardless.

I managed to stop the bleeding and cleaned up as best as I could with tissues from my bag. I couldn’t walk up the volcano, but I couldn’t go back down either because I’d have to pass them again. I imagined being stuck by myself all night. I was really scared. Suddenly I heard rustling and froze.
A pickup truck appeared, driven by the ranger. I must have been as white as a sheet. He told me to get in. The relief was unbelievable. A few minutes later, we saw the dogs in the road where I’d left them. As we drove past, they jumped up at the truck, growling. When we finally reached the gate, I saw the American couple. I learned it was they who told the ranger what had happened. I could never thank them enough for what they did for me. They saved my life!
