Dentler was born in Mumbai, India in I978 and contracted polio(小儿麻痹症)at six months. At the age of three and a half, she was adopted by a couple in the US. She says, “I spent the first few years in America just going through a number of surgeries to basically straighten me out so I could then be fitted for leg braces and crutches.”
“In the early years, it was just me trying to be like my sisters,” she says. “I didn't want to take the disabled bus to school. I wanted to be able to take the bus with my sisters. And so I had to learn how to go up the stairs.”
Later, when she was in her late 20s in New York City. a friend introduced her to a running club for athletes with disabilities where she learned how to use a handcycle(手动自行车): Push a three-. wheeled low-to-he-ground bike using only her upper body.
Within seven months, she learned to swim and to compete using a racing wheelchair. When Dentler finished the triathlon(铁人三项赛), she was motivated to go farther. She soon took up half-Ironman distance triathlons, a distance of nearly 70 miles. And she kept meeting people, mostly able-bodied, with extraordinary athletic ambitions, which led her to attempt her first Ironman in Hawaii. That's a distance of 140. 6 miles.
“At the time, no female wheelchair athlete had ever made the time by the deadline to finish that race,” Dentler says. She missed the finish line on her first try. But a year later, in her second competition, she made it and finished the race in 14 hours, 39 minutes-the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship. She covered all those miles in water and on land, pushed entirely by her arms and upper body. She says, “I think it's important to stay physically active.”
Now, she's a mom. Dentler volunteered at the school to help kids learn to read, “The kids were very curious. They asked me a ton of questions and it was actually pretty fun to answer them. And the kids' eyes would get really big when they heard that could do all of these things.”
24. What do we know about Dentler's disease?
A. It made her body straight enough to walk
B. It made her receive many surgeries to walk easily.
C. It made her need extra support to walk.
D. It made her be adopted by an American at the age of three.
25. Why couldn't Dentler take the bus to school like her sisters?
A. Because she was too young to get on the bus.
B. Because she couldn't get on the bus with her legs.
C. Because her sisters didn't like the disabled.
D. Because she wasn't allowed to take the bus.
26. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. Dentler was the second female wheelchair athlete to finish the Ironman.
B. Dentler made up her mind to finish her first Ironman.
C. Dentler made great efforts to complete her second Ironman.
D. Dentler finished her first Ironman only with her arms.
27. Which of the following can best describe Dentler?
A. Strict but caring. B. Proud but patient.

As summer temperatures around the country rise, many consumers are seeing their energy bills go up rapidly. The average monthly energy bill in the U. S. was $121 in 2021, according to the U. S. Energy Information Administration.
Consumers can keep their homes cooler by using curtains or blinds and keeping them closed during the sunniest part of the day. Turing up the temperature on air conditioners by 7℃ to 10℃ for at least eight hours a day can save as much as 10% from yearly energy costs, Energy. gov reports.
Besides, a smart thermostat(恒温器)can adjust temperature and help to reduce energy bills. A smart thermostat uses Wi-Fi to connect with an app on the owner's phone. Some models even know when the user's phone leaves the house and adjusts the heating or cooling accordingly.
“You can raise or lower the temperature when you're not home, so you're not using energy in the house when you're not going to be around to benefit from it,” says Sara Rathner, a personal finance expert. “You can also control your heating and cooling systems from wherever you are, as long as you have your phone on you.” Not all home heating and cooling systems are suitable for smart home thermostats, though. Most thermostats work best with forced air-type systems, so they won't work with radiant(辐射的)heating systems.
Prices for smart home thermostats start at about $100 and go up from there, while a more traditional thermostat can be purchased for under $30. Rathner suggests looking for seasonal savings like Black Friday deals. Some energy providers offer discounts on new smart thermostats, too. Energy. gov has a rebate(折扣)tool to help consumers find rebates in their own state. Other high-tech devices like smart lights connected to a smart home assistant can also enable consumers to reduce unnecessary use of electricity and cut power to those that continue to draw energy even when not in use.
28. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Homes. B. Consumers. C. Air conditioners. D. Curtains and blinds.
29. What can be learnt from the fourth paragraph?
A. It's unnecessary to lower the temperature.
B. It's easy to fix a smart heating and cooling system.
C. It's essential to build a smart home with a smart phone.
D. It's beyond imagination to control a home's temperature.
30. Why is Black Friday mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. People can buy things with lower prices on that day.
B. Some high-tech devices are only offered on that day.
C. Energy, gov offers discounts on smart lights.
D. Most modern and traditional devices are priced below $30.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. A smart thermostat can help save energy bills. B. A smart device can lower the temperature.
C. How to operate a smart thermostat in your house. D. The best way to keep your home cooler.

An international research team has examined how English lessons in primary school affect language ability in this subject in secondary school. Children who started learning English in the first grade of primary school performed significantly better in listening and reading comprehension in Grade Nine than children who started in Grade Three. The study was a continuation(继续)of an earlier paper that had only covered the period up to the seventh grade and couldn't find any such learning advantage.
The team headed by Professor Markus Ritter from Ruhr-Universitat Bochum (RUB)and Dr. Nils Jakel from the University of Oulu, Finland, deseribes their findings in System. The study included data from around 3, 000 students who participated in a long-term study conducted in Germany between 2010 and 2014. The same data had also been used in the previous study, the researchers had published the results of which in 2017. At that time, the new research had compared two groups, one of which had started English lessons in Grade One, the other in Grade Three. In grades five and seven. they had compared both groups in terms of English reading and listening comprehension. The new analysis contained another set of data collected in 2016 to measure the English performance of the same children in Grade Nine.
The previous study had found that children who had started English lessons earlier in primary school performed worse in reading and listening comprehension in Grade Seven than children who had not started English lessons until Grade Three. However, the new analysis showed that, in Grade Nine, the early starters in English performed better than the late starters in English.
“We believe the most acceptable explanation is that lessons following the transition(过渡)period in secondary school have been increasingly adapted to the needs of children who start to take English lessons at an early stage,” concludes Nils Jakel, formerly at RUB, now at the University of Oulu.
Additional background variables such as gender, language of origin or cognitive(认知的)abilities could not account for the difference between the poorer performance in the seventh grade and the late learning gains in the ninth grade.
32. What did the early research find?
A. Students in Grade Nine were smarter than others.
B. Students in Grade Seven were good at learning English.
C. Learning English from Grade One had no learning advantage.
D. Learning English from Grade Three had some learning advantages.
33. How did the team mainly do the new research?
A. By listing different data and numbers.
B. By making comparisons among different groups.
C. By asking the primary school students to do some tests.
D. By inviting some volunteers to take part in the research.
34. What can we know about the new research according to Paragraph 3?
A. The late starters in English performed better than the early starters in English in Grade Seven.
B. The early starters in English performed better than the late starters in English in Grade Nine.
C. It is hard to find an appropriate time to start to learn English.
D. Academic performance has nothing to do with when to start learning English.
35. The article is probably taken from _______.
A. a website of education research B. a book about one's life story
C. an advertisement in a newspaper D. a magazine of fashion

How to Deal With Stress
Have you ever felt stressed? 36 Since stress is a part of life, it is essential to learn how to deal with it. Here are some strategies for dealing with stress and pressure.
Most of the time, stress is a result of feeling overwhelmed. 37 For example, you could keep a daily organizer and plan your activities. Focus on things that are really important. Do not get caught up in minor issues that only create additional work for you. Break tasks down into manageable bits and tackle them one by one or step by step. Proper planning also helps you avoid the stress of doing things at the eleventh hour.
38 Doing things that you like such as listening to music, taking a walk, or reading a book can take your mind off things that bother you. Even doing nothing at all can be beneficial. After a short break, you will feel refreshed and more able to tackle a problem or a piece of work.
Finally, do not set such high standards for yourself and others that it leads to dissatisfaction and pressure. 39 Learn to slow down, let go and look at the positive side of things. If you are too uptight about something, you will not be able to think clearly and make good decisions. In addition, you could hurt the people around you. 40 Then, negative stressful feelings will disappear.
A. Life gets better once the stress is controlled.
B. To get rid of this feeling, keep yourself organized.
C. Focus on what has already been done and what is good.
D. Taking a break is not an excuse for putting off your work.
E. Besides that, taking time to relax can help you ease stress.
F. If you aim for perfection all the time, you will end up frustrated and stressed out.
G. Well, you are not alone, as every person has to face stress at one time or another.

Seema grabbed hands of her daughter, fearing that the crowd could pull her daughter away. When the train started to move, a snack vendor(小贩)came through the crowd, holding on to his bag and trying to sell snacks.
The vendor seemed very poor, covered in old and broken clothes.
Passing by Seema, that vendor handed out a pack of snacks toward her, saying, “Only 10 cents, madam.” Seema looked at him with disgust, then refused and asked him to move ahead but her daughter said, “Mom, please buy one for me.” The vendor was still standing there. Seema looked at him with anger and said, “Go away.”
The vendor left. Her daughter waved goodbye toward that vendor with her bracelet(手镯) shining, and he waved back. Seema was very angry because of all the discomfort she had to go through while traveling on a train and now her daughter was sad about not buying that snack.

He seems hungry.” Seema refused, saying, “Ignore him. He is not a good person. These people take away little girls in their bags.”
Seema and her daughter got off the tourist train and walked a bit. Just then they heard a voice calling them. When Seema turned back, she saw that vendor was waving his hands toward them and started to walk toward them.

The vendor reached them just before the taxi could take off. He knocked on the door of the taxi constantly. Seema tried to ignore him but something caught her attention. When she looked at the vendor, she saw that he was holding a bracelet and she immediately recognized it. It was her daughter's bracelet. Seema rolled down the window of the car and immediately that vendor handed over the bracelet to Seema through that window and said, “Madam, your daughter lost her bracelet. It is valuable.” Seema took the bracelet numbly.
Just before leaving, the vendor pulled a packet of snack out of his bag and gave it to her daughter. Before she could say anything, the vendor had left. Seema realized her mistake and learned an important lesson for life. She was happy to get the bracelet back but felt sorry to think wrong of that vendor just because of his poor appearance. She leaned that we should not judge someone just because of their looks.

W: Is today the 10th of June? How time flies!
M: Yes, and I have one more lecture to give the day after tomorrow.
Text 2
M: How are the sales figures looking?
W: They're great! We had a sharp rise after the online marketing campaign began. It's better than hiring extra salespeople.
M: Good! Now I'm thinking of offering some discount next season.
Text3
W: Why don't you go to bed, Jimmy? Are you reading that storybook?
M: Oh. I just remembered I hadn't done my science homework yet. I'm searching online for some information about that.
Text 4
M: I kicked a player out of our team for his misbehavior last week.
W: I heard he apologized and promised not to do that again. Why not give him a second chance?
M: Maybe you are right.
Text 5
M: I would enjoy looking around the bookshop. It's really enjoyable.
W: Me too. I always find the book in the shop or the supermarket and then buy it online! It's often a lot cheaper.
Text 6
M: Hi, Silvia. Are you going camping with us?
W: Surely, yes.
M: Great. It should be good fun unless the weather gets bad.
W: What do I need to take?
M: Well, when I get home, I'll text you the list I've made. You don't need to worry about food though. I've packed enough hamburgers. That's the easiest thing to make. W: Fine. In case we run out of hamburgers, I'll take some tins and bread.
M: Good idea. If you want, bring some cards. We could play at night.
Text 7
W: So, what kind of pet do you want to get?
M: How about a fish? Fish look beautiful and are easy to take care of.
W: Don't you think they're too boring? How about a snake? Snakes are interesting.
M: Are you serious? Snakes are too frightening! How about a dog? Dogs make great pets.
W: That's true. My sister has two cute dogs and I love them very much. Hey, how about that dog?
Isn't it beautiful?
M: Yes, and it's not that expensive. But its hair is too long. I don't want to clean up dog hair every day.
W: Oh, all right. Well, that cat over there looks nice. It seems friendly, and it has short hair.
M: Yeah, it's perfect!
W: Let's get it!
Text 8
M: Are you free tonight, Cathy? I Heard a new movie named Hello Mr Millionaire is pretty good. People speak highly of it. I am wondering if you'd like to go to the cinema with me.
W: I'd love to, but I have piano lessons every Friday night.
M: All right. Do you have anything planned for this Saturday?
W: Well, I need to do my homework in the morning. And my friend Susanna invited me to her birthday party in the afternoon. Besides, I've got a piano competition on Sunday morning and I need to prepare for it tomorrow evening.

W: Yeah. What's up?
M: The film Hotel Transylvania 3 is on this week. Would you like to come and see it with me on Friday afternoon?

Text 10
M: When I turned seven years old, my sister and I didn't have any pets. Our cat had died almost a year before. Ever since Tabby died, I have felt a little lonely. Cats make you feel less worried. They'll sleep in your bed and make you warm at night. They'll sit on your legs quietly and watch TV with you. I really missed my cat. Well, on my seventh birthday, my father came home by car like he always did. My sister Terri and I met him at the door as usual. When my father came inside the house, he put his black bag down and got on his knees in front of us. Instead of giving us a hug, he told me to take off his blue work jacket. I did, and I saw two little cats! One was white, and the other was brown. My sister started laughing happily. I didn't know what to say and just stared at the beautiful little cats. My father gently put the white one into my arms and said, “Happy Birthday!”
