“You’re going to the United States to live? How wonderful! You’re really lucky!”
Does this sound familiar? Perhaps your family and friends said similar things to you when you left home. But does it seem true all the time? Is your life in this new country always wonderful and exciting? A great many facts show that it’s not easy for newcomers to get used to life in a new culture. They have to experience culture shock.
What causes culture shock? Maybe the weather is unpleasant. Perhaps the customs are different. Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office, or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes. The simplest things seem difficult. The language may be difficult. The food may seem strange to you. If you don’t look similar to the natives, you may feel strange. You may feel as if everyone is watching you. In fact, you are always watching yourself.
Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another. But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people. A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries. They were active and successful in their community (社区). They had hobbies which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation (晕头转向), which may be homesickness, imagined illness, or even paranoia (偏执症). When people feel the disorientation of culture shock, they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment. They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture. Familiarity and experience are the long-term ways to settle the problem of culture shock.
4.Who is the passage mainly for?
A.The family and friends of those who came to the US.
B.Those who have got rid of culture shock.
C.People who have just moved to a foreign country.
D.People who can easily adjust their life in the US.
5.The underlined part “you are always watching yourself” (in Paragraph 3) means ______.
A.you are always feeling homesick
B.you are always worried too much about yourself
C.you are always looking at yourself in the mirror
D.you are always nervous about meeting other people
6.Which of the following would be a case of culture shock for newcomers?
A.They have trouble using public telephones.
B.Their positions or hobbies stay the same.
C.They are active and successful in the new community.
D.They have got used to the life in the new country.
7.The best way for the newcomers to overcome culture shock is ______.
A.to stay inside to protect themselves B.to make a study of the new hobbies
C.to get used to the new environment D.to ask people for help when having difficulties

In valleys with thick plants, different-sized round and square buildings with faded yellow clay walls and wooden roofs, tulou lie in mountainous villages in Longyan, Fujian Province. There are more than 23,000 tulou in Yongding, which became well-known after 46 were given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2008. “The structures were awarded because they are exceptional examples of a building of tradition and function demonstrating a particular type of communal living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement,” UNESCO said.
The giant multi-storied tulou were built with wood and mud walls. Constructed from the 15th to 20th centuries, these massive communal homes were sited based on feng shui principles, which claim to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their environment. Tulou are also purposefully resting amid tea, tobacco, rice plantations and abundant forests of pine and bamboo.
Throughout history, tulou residents have mostly been Hakka — migrants in southern China. Population pressures created conflict between the Hakka and their neighbors, so they built their homes to double as defending. The buildings are mainly four or five stories high. The first floor serves as the kitchen, the second is used for grain storage and the upper floors act as living areas. The structures are mainly symmetrical, and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark-tiled roofs, and a water well. For their defensive function, only rooms on the third floor and higher have windows, which are very small. With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.
Communal living is integrity to these villages, where the closed wall design boosts social interaction. Residents gather in the courtyard for ceremonies such as ancestor worship and weddings. Tulou is such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.
8.What do we know about tulou?
A.Over 23,000 tulou were given World Heritage status.
B.Among 23,000 tulou, only 46 became famous globally.
C.They’re exceptional buildings of tradition and function.
D.Tulou is the most outstanding Chinese human settlement.
9.What is most important for residents during a long period of conflict?
A.Escape tunnels. B.Enough food. C.Small windows. D.Defensive weapons.
10.What is probably the author’s attitude to the protection of tulou?
A.Favorable. B.Unclear. C.Negative. D.Unconcerned.
11.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Tulou: in Harmony with Their Environments
B.Tulou: Different-Sized Round and Square Buildings
C.Tulou: Given the World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2008
D.Tulou: a Special Chinese Structure Combining Living and Defending
D
The Curious Origins of the Dollar Sign
The dollar sign is among the world’s most powerful symbols and represents far more than U.S. currency. Yet despite its common appearance in various languages, the origins of the dollar sign remain far from clear. And the dollar sign was in use before the United State was born.
In 1520, the Kingdom of Bohemia began making coins using silver from a mine in Joachimsthal —which is roughly translated from German into English as Joachim’s valley. Logically, the coin was named the Joachimsthaler, which was then shortened to Thaler, the word that proceeded to spread around the world. It was the Dutch variation, the Daler, that made its way across the Atlantic in the pockets and on the tongues of early immigrants, and today’s American-English pronunciation of the word “dollar” still has its echoes. However, it is no straightforward answer to the question of where the dollar sign ($) sprang from.
One of the origin stories links it back to the Bohemian “Thaler”, which featured a huge snake on Christian cross (基督教十字架). It was an indirect reference to the story of Moses, who was a prophet in the Bible, winding a bronze snake around a pole in order to cure people who’d been bitten. The dollar, so it’s said, originated from that sign.
Yet the most widely accepted theory in fact involves coins used in Spain, and it goes like this: In the colonies, trade between Spanish Americans and English Americans was lively, and the PESO was legal money in the U.S. until 1857. It was often shortened to the initial “P” with an “S” hovering beside and a little above it. Gradually, thanks to the careless and untidy way of writing by time-pressed merchants, that “P” combined with the “S” and lost its curve, leaving the vertical stroke like a stake down the center of the “S”.
12.What can be known about the dollar sign?
A.It symbolizes wealth. B.It starts from a silver mine.
C.It uses worldwide. D.It was born as early as the U.S. did.
13.Which language mostly contributes to the origin of the pronunciation of the word “dollar” ?
A.Bohemian. B.Dutch. C.American English. D.German.
14.What can be inferred form Paragraph 3?
A.The Bohemian “Thaler” included religious elements.
B.The snake was regarded to be the sign of curing power.
C.The dollar sign had been in use since the story of Moses.
D.The Bohemian people made their coins in honor of Moses.
15.what’s the direct result of business men’s writing way of the word PESO?
A.The word was shortened. B.The dollar sign was invented.
C.The latter P and S were blending. D.The writing way was widely spread.

书面表达
Dear Lily,
I’m terribly sorry to learn from your letter that you feel upset at present, which is because your mother is always posting your photos online without your permission. Putting myself in your shoes, I extend my understanding to you and give my opinions as follows.
Above all, it is a wise choice to have a face-to-face communication with your mother whatever the reason is. Tell her about your true feelings and she will understand how you feel. On the one hand, if your photos are constantly shared online, your privacy will be exposed in public, which will have a bad effect on your growth in the long run. On the other hand, your mother will tend to be more and more sensitive to those likes and comments of the photos.
In conclusion, I do hope what is mentioned above will be of great use to you. And if you have any further questions, turn to me without hesitation. Looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
