I’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other car in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?

It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms: Why didn't we start earlier, bring the map and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.

Just thenWOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?

Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned the car engine off. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.

How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.

We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?

    24. Which of the following might be the destination of the author’s driving?

    A. Her own home. B. A vacation spot.  C. A tourist centre.  D. Her cousin’s farm.

    25. What made the author keep blaming herself in the beginning?

    A. That the vacation was below her expectations.

    B. That she wasn’t as good at using maps as before.

    C. That her cousin and daughter couldn’t get along.

    D. That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.

    26. The author felt really amazed because ___________.

    A. her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasure

    B. she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the public

    C. she unintentionally reached what she had planned to

    D. the right route to her destination came out of nowhere

    27. What does the story intend to tell us?

    A. Stay cool when you are trapped in trouble.

    B. Make a change for the purpose of survival.

    C. Slow down your paces to enjoy beauty in life.

    D. Be positive because there's always an alternative.

    C

In valleys with thick plants, different-sized round and square buildings with faded yellow clay walls and wooden roofs, tulou lie in mountainous villages in Longyan, Fujian Province. There are more than 23,000 tulou in Yongding, which became well-known after 46 were given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2008. The structures were awarded because they are exceptional examples of a building of tradition and function demonstrating a particular type of communal (共有的) living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement, UNESCO said.

The giant multi-storied tulou were built with wood and mud walls. Constructed from the 15th to 20th centuries, these massive communal homes were sited based on feng shui principles, which claim to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their environment. Tulou are also purposefully resting amid tea, tobacco, rice plantations and abundant forests of pine and bamboo.

Throughout history, tulou residents have mostly been Hakka migrants in southern China. Population pressures created conflict between the Hakka and their neighbors, so they built their homes to double as defending. The buildings are mainly four or five stories high. The first floor serves as the kitchen, the second is used for grain storage and the upper floors act as living areas. The structures are mainly symmetrical (对称的), and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark-tiled roofs, and a water well. For their defensive function, only rooms on the third floor and higher have windows, which are very small. With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.

Communal living is integrity to these villages, where the closed wall design boosts social interaction. Residents gather in the courtyard for ceremonies such as ancestor worship and weddings. Tulou is such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.

    28. What do we know about tulou?

    A. Over 23,000 tulou were given World Heritage status.

    B. Among 23,000 tulou, only 46 became famous globally.

    C. Tulou is the most outstanding Chinese human settlement.

    D. Theyre exceptional buildings of tradition and function.

    29. What is most important for residents during a long period of conflict?

    A. Enough food.  B. Escape tunnels.  C. Small windows.  D. Defensive weapons.

    30. What is probably the author’s attitude to the protection of tulou?

    A. Unconcerned.  B. Favorable.      C. Negative.        D. Unclear.

    31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A. Tulou: Given the World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2008

    B. Tulou: a Special Chinese Structure Combining Living and Defending

    C. Tulou: Different-Sized Round and Square Buildings

    D. Tulou: in Harmony with Their Environments

During the 2022 Winter Olympics, at the hotels in the competition area located in Yanqing District, Beijing, a smart robot “Coffee Master” with skilled tea brewing techniques became an eye-catching feature among the attending athletes. Besides it, other robots have carried out their duties in many unnoticed corners, supporting the event.

Following the Olympics success, the outstanding performance of Chinese-made robots at the global sports gala have attracted customers across the world, representing the country’s innovation ability while boosting Chinese people’s pride.

Many industry insiders believe that the Beijing Winter Olympics is an “accelerator” for the development of the robotics industry.

“In recent years, China’s robotics industry has made many technological advances. However, before the Winter Olympics, many customers had a wait-and-see attitude toward robot products,” Yang Rui, a director from Gaussian Robotics told the Global Times, noting that with Olympics success, a large number of foreign customers have come to cooperate with the company.

According to a report by CCID Consulting, a research institute under the MIIT, in 2020, the market demand for service robots in China saw explosive growth due to the epidemic, with the market size reaching 28.38 billion yuan ($3.7 billion), up 37.4 percent year-on-year. With an aging population and rising labor costs, domestic service robots enjoy huge demand potential with the market size expected to reach 75.18 billion yuan by 2023.

Wang Peng, assistant professor at the Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence at the Renmin University of China, noted that domestic robot sensors and computing chips are still relying on imports, leading to elevated cost of the highly sophisticated robots.

“China’s robotics industry has seen booming development, but still has a long way to go,” Wang said.

    1. What does the underlined word “accelerator” mean in the third paragraph?
    1. Hunter.   B. Inventor.    C. Promotor.  D. Turning.

    C. To prove the robots success.      D. To support Yang’s opinion.

    34. What is a direct result of the success of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics?

    A. China’s robotics industry is having a great boom.

    B. Domestic robot sensors can be produced independently.

    C. Foreign customers prefer to cooperate with domestic robot company.

    D. The market demand for service robots in China grows rapidly.

    35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A. China’s robotics techniques become eye catching in the world.

    B. Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics contribute much to China’s robotics industry.

    C. Robots make no difference to the success of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

    D. Robots’ functions in hotels during Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year old Sara rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone,“No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”

Holding her oil painting, she frowned(皱眉), and then searched for her dad.“Dad, see what I have done,”Sara announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!

Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sara replied angrily,“Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”

He smiled at her saying,“No time, baby. I will see it later.”He just patted her back lovinglykissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把...砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.

“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sara deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail, her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind.
