As 17-year-old Torri ‘ell Norwood drove through Florida, last February, the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached an intersection, another car T-boned them, sending their car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree.

Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life. But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, Simmons, wasn't with them. Norwood ran back and found Simmons unconscious in the back seat. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out. She dragged(拖;拽)Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. After checking her pulse(脉搏) and found there was no sign of lifeshe started CPR.

Had the accident happened a few weeks earlier, she might not have known what to do. But just the day before, Norwood, who wanted to pursue a career in medicine, had earned her CPR certificate by learning on her own. Kneeling(跪) on the ground and looking down at her dying friend, Norwood knew she had precious little time to practice what she'd learned.

She started pumping Simmons's chest with her interlocked fingers and breathing into her friend's mouth in hopes of filling her lungs with the kiss of life. After quite a while, Simmons began coughing and taking quick deep breaths for air. The CPR had worked! Soon, the ambulance arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. It's 3 o'clock and you've been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn't. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings(渴望)are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.

Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone(荷尔蒙)sends a message to one part of the brain for more foodwhich controls our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.

A craving is more complex. It activates(刺激)brain areas related to emotionmemory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because of this, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.”  People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure.

In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or controlled eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you refuse yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time reduced food cravings.

So, the next time you crave something very special, know that it's the fault of your brain, instead of your stomach.

    28. The author describes two situations in the first paragraph to

    A. deepen the understanding of hunger

    B.  report the discovery of craving study

    C. introduce the topic of the whole passage

    D. remind readers of their own special food

    29. What do we learn about food craving?

A.It shows food is connected with emotion.

    B. It makes sure that a person survives hunger.

    C. It means the stomach functions well.

D.It proves the brain decides your appetite.

30.What's the likely result of dieting?

    A. The drop of chemicals.

C.The refusal of fat and sugar.

    B. The increase of food desire.

    D. The disappearance of appetite.

31.In which part of a newspaper can you see this passage?

    A.Education.

    C.Science.

    B.Entertainment.

    D.Economy.

    D

In Canada and the United States, there are a new group of children called “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the west. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university.

The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these children become “satellite kids”, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”.

Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kid” problem. Because these children do not speak English and their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means growing up in the surroundings where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means growing up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these “satellite kids” will probably say to their parents is that it's better to have parents around than to have a university education.

    32. Some Asian parents send their kids abroad because

A.they hope their children may easily find a job there

B.the kids may not be accepted by universities in their own country

C.all foreign universities are better than the ones in their own country

    D. the kids want to improve their English and foreign friends

    33. “Satellite kids” refer to the Asian kids

    A.without parents

    B.living abroad alone

    C.with university education

    D. not speaking English

    34. Some Asian immigrant children become “satellite kids" because their parents

A.want to leave their own country

B.want them to go to university

C.return to their countries to work

    D.want them to be independent

35.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Parents want a better education for their kids.

B.Parents feel lonely and miss their families.

C.Canadians and Americans begin to notice the "satellite kid" problem.

D.Kids in foreign countries alone are badly in need of care from families.

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The advantages & disadvantages of being a host family

Hosting an exchange student can be the most rewarding experience in the world. Bringing an exchange student into your home can have its advantages and disadvantages. I am going to start with the disadvantages.

    Disadvantages:

The language barrier. You may have a hard time just because of the language barrier. 36You would even be tearing your hair out. Just take a deep breath and communicate once again.

Extra costs.  37 Although they pay for their medicine and clothes, there are still many other costs. Does your family like to go out to the movies? Well, you now have an extra person to pay for. Food at home is another cost. You have to provide food for breakfast and dinner as well as lunch if the student chooses not to pay for hot lunch at school.

    Advantages:

38This is an amazing journey. They will have many questions about why you do things. They will want to try new activities and learn about your traditions. This is also an excellent chance for you to learn about their country and culture.

The opportunity to gai a son/daughter. This experience will give you the chance to communicate with a child in a way you never expected! And many will also feel thankful for the opportunity you have given them. You two will share many laughs along the way and make memories to last a lifetime.              39

Many of the advantages and disadvantages really go hand in hand. 40 Remember, you have the chance to help realize the dream of a teenager and the chance to learn about another culture and to experience new traditions.

    A. It will leave a great impression on both of you.

B.It is up to you how you deal with each situation.

C.As with every child you have, there is always an added cost.

D.The opportunity to communicate with your foreign neighbors.

E.They want you and the students to have a wonderful experience.

F.It will make it difficult for you to talk with exchange students.

G.The chance to help a student experience life in another country and culture.

At Sandringham I got to know this kid, Teddy, a funny guy. He is one of those friends with whom you start hanging out and from that day forward you're never apart. We were both very naughty. When you put us together, it was a disaster. Walking home from school, we’d throw rocks through windows, just to see them broken, and then we'd run away.

One Saturday night, we were at the shopping center, and most of the shops were closed. The cinema was still showing movies and the building was still open. There was a shop that sold greeting cards and magazines, and it didn't have a door. So when it closed at nightthere was only a metal gatelike a trellis(架子),which was pulled across the entrance and padlocked(用挂锁锁上).Walking past this shopTeddy and I realized that if we put our arms through the trellis, we could reach the chocolate just inside. Looking at the chocolate, Teddy and I could not bear the excitement. We reached in, took a few, and then swallowed the chocolates. We started going back again and again t steal more.

We did this every weekend for at least a month. Then we pushed our luck too far. It was a Saturday night. I reached in to take a chocolate, and at that exact moment, a security guard came around the corner and saw me with my arm in up to my shoulder. I brought my hand out with a bunch of chocolates in it. I saw him. He saw me, his eyes went wide. 注意:
