Molly Wogan loves dogs so much that she decided to give up a big party of her life to help them. When she learned many dogs lived in bad conditions or had their lives cut short, she decided to give them back to the dog shelters that had helped her family find their family dogs.
So, instead of having a big party for her initiation ceremony (成人礼), she decided to help the dogs. As Molly said, “To be an adult means doing good things, but I didn’t want to focus on a party. I didn’t really need a party, but the dogs need the help.”
Molly was already a shelter volunteer helping out once each week. But she decided to take things to the next level. Molly started the Precious Animals Wonderful Shelters Project to help the dogs in bad situations travel across the country to find people who were willing to adopt them. Molly set a target to raise $2,500 in one year to give to 14 local shelters along with items like toys. Over the year, her project grew.
Molly ended up volunteering over 400 hours and sold homemade dog toys and treats, and key chains at 45 different events. In just a year, she raised $38,000. Meanwhile she also took two “transport” trips from Georgia to her home state of Massachusetts to move 110 at-risk dogs to the Northeast, where she helped each find a home. With the money she raised, she could get every dog vet visits, food and transport.
Molly hopes to save another 100 dogs this year. She is a wonderful example of a young person following her heart and taking action to make the world a better place. Molly is not only saving 100 dogs’ lives, but she is changing the lives of those who adopt them as well.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently declared children’s mental health is a national crisis.
In December 2021, Dr. Murthy issued a report to highlight the additional pressures the economic depression had put on the country’s youth, and the urgent need to address this. The impact of this crisis is far-reaching, and new research shows that it’s affecting parents’ well-being, plus their ability to succeed at work and provide for their families.
“On Our Sleeves, a national movement that aims to break shame around children’s mental health, surveyed more than 3,000 working parents across the US and found that 8 in 10 parents have been very concerned about their child’s mental health and development or behavior in the past two years. Children’s mental health concerns have been hiding in plain sight for many years, surrounded by confusion and shame,” says Marti Bledsoe Post, the director of On Our Sleeves.
The survey found that 53% of working parents have missed work at least once per month to deal with their children’s mental health. And 71% of parents said issues with their child’s mental or emotional well-being made the stresses of work much more difficult to cope with.
“Employers need to know that many of their employees are struggling and it is impinging their work as a result,” says Marti. “Our mission with On Our Sleeves is to provide every family in America access to free, evidence-based educational resources. We see this study as incredibly important in starting the conversation and providing solutions for working families.”
As Marti points out, for some parents, taking a child to weekly therapy (心理治疗) appointments and attending meetings at school consume a lot of time. These parents should be helped.

As supplies of fresh water become smaller around the world, efforts are under way to obtain more of it from various sources. Driven by pollutants in underground water and the environmental cost of bottled water, European companies are at the forefront of this technological challenge.
GENAQ is a Spanish company known for atmospheric water generators, a device to generate fresh water from the air. The company has been developing atmospheric water generators since 2008 and has customers in 60 countries, mainly emergency services and industrial users.
Carlos Garcia, general manager of GENAQ, foresees a world in which many millions of homes will get water out of thin air. He led the Horizon-funded STRATUS project to expand the market. Through the project, the company developed a new version designed for people at home. These new generators can be attached to houses and create fresh water for their inhabitants.
So how does it work? Firstly, air around is taken in and cooled to a point where water can condense (凝结). Then the water is filtered (过滤), and minerals are added. Ultraviolet light (紫外线) is also used to prevent bacteria forming. Besides, atmospheric water generators depend on something beyond their control: weather. The best performance is in hot and damp climates, and cold and dry environments have been not performing very well. But now indoor conditions of houses are well suited for this solution.
Garcia said they have found a way to greatly cut the amount of energy used in the process—150% less—and the average cost of daily water supply fell by more than 80%. “We have dedicated most of our efforts to efficiency,” said Garcia. “We are now aiming to supply everyday families with atmospheric water generators. In the coming months, we plan to expand in European countries such as Spain, France and Germany where bottled-water consumption is high. A following step is to break into the worldwide consumer market.”
32. How does author lead in the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By drawing a conclusion. B. By sharing an experience.
C. By following the time order. D. By offering background information.
33. What do we learn about the new generators?
A. They operate better when it is raining. B. They offer household water for free.
C. They are mainly targeted at factories. D. They are not environmentally friendly.
34. What is Garcia’s attitude toward the new generators?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Disappointed. D. Shocked.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Free Access to Fresh Water from the Air B. Principles to Obtain Fresh Water from the Air
C. A Device to Hunt for Fresh Water from the Air D. New Ways to Protect Fresh Water from the Air

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My stomach dropped as Mrs. Nelson said, “This is just a reminder that tomorrow is the Open Day!”
I hoped Mom to be free tomorrow so Dad would not have to come. What would people think of him? I put all negative thoughts aside with the determination that Mom would be able to come, and that was the end of it!
When arriving home, I walked in the kitchen and smelled fresh bread. It was one of Mom’s baking days! She greeted with her usual warmth, asking, “Well, hello there! How was your day?” “Nothing special. It was just another day,” I replied casually. Hearing this, her face showed her disappointment, but then her eyes kept probing (探查) mine trying to read if I was being honest. It worked. She saw there was something on my mind. “Heidi, are you sure you have no news for me?” she continued.
I explained that tomorrow was the Open Day. And Dad was walking in the back door just in time to hear the news. I quickly asked Mom, “You are free, aren’t you?”
“Sorry dear, I have made lots of arrangements for tomorrow. Maybe Dad will be willing to go.”
“Do you want me to come with you, Heidi?” Dad asked with a smile, “I would really love that!”
“Sure, Dad. That would be cool,” I said. But Dad really did not notice my lack of enthusiasm as his face brightened and he started talking about how much fun it was going to be.
I loved Dad’s optimism and enthusiasm. He had made life so exciting and adventurous for the family and I adored him for it. But would people see him the way I saw him? His thin body with practically bald (秃的) head was not exactly what my friends would consider a “cool dad”. Dad was also much older than most of my friends’ parents. Their dads would be professional businessmen, doctors, dentists, or engineers. Dad was a draftsman (绘图员) and he worked in an office at home.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Well, whether I liked it or not, the next morning came.
When we arrived, we walked into my class.

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.

I played the violin and that was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a journalist, but I didn’t think it was right for me.
I didn’t know what to study at university. I was good at lots of science subjects, including Physics and Maths, but I also loved entertaining people and I was good at Art. In the end, I went to a film school where I studied lighting, special effects, how to use a camera... all that! It was there that I started to think about working in the video game industry.
People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and it’s quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games. But what I love most is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. That’s what makes my job so much fun.

参考范文:
Dear Jack,
How are you doing? I’d like to invite you to write an article for our school’s English magazine.
In order to make us students have a better understanding of body language in different countries, we are going to cover some articles about body language. I wonder if you could write something concerning what is body language as well as the implications in different cultures. You can write anything relevant so long as students can appreciate the art of non-verbal humour. 350 words would be fine. Could we have your article before next Friday?
Looking forward to your reply soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文:
Well, whether I liked it or not, the next morning came. I was feeling a bit worried but Dad seemed to have been well prepared. As I went out of my bedroom, he stood up, smiling from ear to ear. Obviously, my half smile didn’t quite compare with his. On the way to school, in the car, Dad asked so many questions that I felt as if he were really questioning me. I knew he was doing his best to get a brief idea about my school life that he was about to see, though.
When we arrived, we walked into my class. Dad stood out visually, which was not quite beyond my expectation. As soon as he entered, he was making friends with children and parents. Then, he shared his stories. I looked around, checking my friends’ expressions and reactions. To my surprise, all of my classmates looked at Dad with such admiration. They told me the crazy stories in Dad’s childhood were so cool. Not until then did I realize the things that would have embarrassed me most were indeed the same things that made me proud most!
