Most readers probably feel worried about climate(气候) change. There's so much information about what's gone wrong, and everything that has to change, and how quickly we need to do it. If
you don't know where to start, the book Things You Can Do can help you,
    About Eduardo Garcia
The book is written by reporter Eduardo Garcia. Garcia is a firm believer in the power of individual choices to effect change.
    About this book
The book opens with a story about a small bird that is trying to put out a forest fire, The other animals say it's useless, but the bird replies, "I'm doing the best 1 can. a long way toward fighting climate change. ”
The book starts with talking about weather, climate, and greenhouse gases, and what could cause them. Then the second chapter looks at energy production, explaining and comparing different sources of heating and electricity. Food is the next topic, with a brief overview of industrial agriculture's too many emissions, followed by things you can do to eat more climate-friendly diet.
Next, a discussion about transportation and how we need to get out of cars and into buses, bicycles and our own two feet. Garcia writes, “The best solution is often the simplest, Half of all car trips are less than 3 miles long. That means that we often take the car when walking or biking will do just fine. ”
The last chapter covers different goods that finally get thrown away. Garcia has suggestions for going zero waste at home. He provides advice on how to deal with things and encourages reducing, repairing, and reusing.

George Dowling has hated December, his once favorite month, for the past nine years. Christmas became a difficult time of the year for him after the death of his wife Lucille. “She was Ch ristmas, " Dowling said. “She did everything big—all the cooking and baking (烘烤) ”Lucille passed away on December I, 2013, following a battle with a disease. Dowling and his daughter, Suzan Brito, pulled down the tree and canceled Christmas that year.
As December neared the year after Lucille's death, Brito considered ways to cheer up her father, “Dad loves getting mail, "Suzan Brito said. "I thought maybe some Christmas cards would make him happy:"So she reached out to her friends and family on Facebook, requesting them to send her father a Christmas card. To her joy, about 30 of them did. Brito decided to do it yearly since the cards served their function. Now, family, friends and even strangers offer Dowling sincere Christmas greetings.
“We've been doing this since my grandmother passed away, ” Brito's daughter, Charlene Fletcher, wrote on Facebook, requesting people to send greeting cards to her grandfather. "It helps him get through the holiday. The card-collecting campaign(活动) took a life of its own after her post Dowling got over 10, 000 cards in eight days.
Cards have been received from all states and even from around the world. “Reading the cards, ” Dowling said, "keeps my mind busy. "It also serves as a reminder to him that people are good. “It's been crazy, ”Dowling said, adding he has recently felt like a renowned person. Fans who've read his story have stopped him on the street, in the grocery and in restaurants in recent days.
Dowling's favorite card so far is from Nina, a four-year-old girl. “love you George. You're my best friend. Merry Christmas, ”she wrote. “It's unbelievable, ”Dowling said, adding he has too many cards to reply to by hand. In recent years, about one-third of harlequin frogs thought to have gone extinct(灭绝的)due to a disease and the pressure of climate change since the 1950s have been rediscovered. The news is a "glimmer(一线)of hope", says Kyle Jaynes, a conversation biologist at Michigan State University in Hickory Comers.
For Jaynes, the path to uncovering how many harlequin frogs have returned from being in danger of extinction started when he heard about the Jambato harlequin frog. This black and orange frog was once widespread in the Ecuadorian Andes. Then came a skin disease. "From 1988 to 1989 the frogs just completely disappeared, " Jaynes says.
For years, people searched for the frogs. Scientists ran large surveys(调查), and rewards were offered to anyone that could find one. Then in 2016, a boy discovered a small population of Jambato frogs in Ecuador. For a species that had been missing for so many years, it seemed like a miracle(奇迹).
Luis Coloma, a researcher and conservationist at the Centro Jambato de Investigation and Conservation de Anfibios in Quito、Ecuador, runs a program for Jambato and other Ecuadorian frogs threatened with extinction. In 2019, Jaynes was part of a group of researchers visiting Coloma's lab. After the Jambato frogs returned to the scene, the team started hearing about other missing harlequin species being discovered for the first time in years.
Those stories led Jaynes, Coloma and their co-workers to check reports to sce just how many harlequin frogs had reappeared. More than 80 species have gone missing since 1950, but as many as 32 species of them were found in the last twenty years—a much higher number than the team had expected.
The news comes with warnings. For one thing, it seems like most species avoided disappearing by a hair, and their numbers are still dangerously low. So extinction is still very much on the table. "We've got a second chance here, "Jaynes says. "But there is still a lot we have to do to protect these species. "
    28. Which of the following can best describe the discovery of Jambato frogs?
    A. Doubtful. B. Surprising. C. Too late. D. Not new.
    29. What did the team find after doing their research?
    A. Many harlequin frogs didn't really go extinct.
    B. More new harlequin frog species have appeared.
    C. Over 80 species of harlequin frogs are extinct now.
    D. They had always been right about harlequin frogs.
    30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Many researchers get a warning of harlequin frogs' extinction.
    B. The rediscovered species have got out of the danger of extinction.
    C. More and more species will become extinct in the future.
    D. The rediscovered harlequin frogs are still in danger now.
    31. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Efforts to find harlequin frogs. B. Disappearance of harlequin frogs.
    C. Returning of "extinct" harlequin frogs. D. A program for protecting harlequin frogs.
    D
Scientists have known for a long time about the tiny electric. charge(电荷) carried by insects (昆虫). But no one has looked at how that electrically might influence the atmosphere's electric field.
The idea to research it came to researchers by chance.
“We were actually interested in understanding how atmospheric electricity influences biology (生 物), ”says Ellard Hunting, a biologist working at the University of Bristol in England. One day, a group of honeybees passed over a piece of equipment at his team's field station. That equipment was meant to pick up electricity in the air. But this chance meeting raised the scientists' curiosity. Could life forms influence atmospheric electricity. To find the answer, Hunting's group measured the change in the strength of an electric charge when other groups of honeybees passed over their equipment.
They found an average increase of 100 volts every meter. The denser (稠密的) the insect group, the greater the charge. This inspired the team to think about even larger insect groups. Locusts(蝗虫)for example, can form clouds as big as l, 000 square kilometers.
The team measured the charges of locusts as the insects flew in a wind tunnel(风洞)powered by a fan. Then, the learn combined(使结合)those measurements with data on the densities of real locust groups from previous studies. They found clouds of locusts could produce about as much electricity every meter as storm clouds.
The results stress the need to explore the unknown lives of airborne animals. Hunting says. However, they face challenges. Those animals can sometimes reach much greater heights than honeybees or locusts,
Some insect groups can be huge. Still, electrically charged flying animals are unlikely to ever be dense enough to produce lightning, says Joseph Dwyer of the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, who didn't take part in the new study. Their presence could, however, mess (干扰) with storm tracking. "If you have something messing up our electric-field measurements, that could cause
a wrong alarm, "Dwyer says. "Or it could make you miss something important.
    32. What did the researchers do in their study?
    A. They made honeybees fly in a wind tunnel powered by a fan.
    B. They made comparisons between different clouds of locusts.
    C. They compared electricity produced by storms to that by honeybees.
    D. They measured how electric charges changed when honeybees flew.
    33. What is the finding of the new research?
    A. Insects carry tiny electric charges. B. Insect groups might electrify the air.
    C. Insect groups damage an electric field. D. Larger insects could bring storm clouds.
    34. What might add to the difficulty in studying airborne animals?
    A. They fly in large groups. B. Many of them are large.
    C. Some of them fly too high. D. There are too many species.
    35. What is the possible effect of electrically-charged flying animals?
    A. Leading to incorrect weather reports. B. Making lightning happen more often.
C, Causing great damage to power stations. D. Making it harder to keep storms in control.

One day a cat appeared at our back door. My four-year-old brother Daniel and I were both surprised and quickly fell in love with the cal. All that afternoon, the three of us played together. In the evening, we begged our parents to let our new friend come inside. But Mom said, "This cat looks too clean and healthy to be homeless. He must have a home already. ”
However, the next day, the cat was still there. "Yeah!" said Daniel. “He wants to be our cat!”1t did seem so. He hung around here all day, playing with Daniel and me outside. That day, our parents decided to find his owner. They made “cat-found” leaflets(传单), with the cat's picture and our phone number. We put up the leaflets around the neighborhood. The third day, I named him Alley, and our parents let us put some food out for him. The fourth day, to our excitement, our parents allowed us to bring him inside. Alley enjoyed staying with us.
Two weeks later, to our disappointment, a man appeared at our door holding our leaflet, Alley walked over to him and rubbed(摩擦) himself against the man's leg. “I'm Johnson, ”he announced, picking Alley up. “I see you've met my only roommate. He wandered away when I was out of town. Can I offer you some money for watching him?”
“No, ”Dad said. “It was a pleasure to have him as our guest. ”At the door, Mr. Johnson turned back and faced us kids. Seeing our tears, he said, “I'm sorry. I didn't realize you kids had been good friends with my cat. I only live a few blocks away. If you two would like to visit my cat . . ”Daniel just ran away, crying. Mr. Johnson left his phone number and went away. Over his shoulder was Alley. Alley's unreadable green eyes looked back at me all the way down the walk. For days, we missed Alley.
Then one day, I heard Daniel in our yard shouting, “Alley is back alone! He somehow has found his way here. "I was amazed.

    W:Oh, I’m sorry, sir. Sure.
    Text 5
W:Look at you! Have you been working hard? Well, there’s a nice, warm bed waiting for you.
    M:Thanks, Mom. Don’t worry. I’m OK. I’m just a little hungry.
    Text 6
W:Are you talking to yourself? That is a bad sign.
M:No, I am talking to my phone. I downloaded a language program so I can practice.
W:Oh, that’s clever. Do you have a conversation with it?
M:Yes, and it tells me if I say something wrong.
W:Technology is so smart these days. Just think how much easier it makes learning.
M:Yes, but you still have to rely on your brain.
W:Of course, but things like this are a great help.
    Text 7
W:Can you tell Mom that my car wouldn’t start so I’ll be home late?
M:Are you getting a ride with someone then?
W:No. I’m going to travel on foot.
M:The school is way too far for that. Please, take my bike instead.
W:No, it will be fine. It’s not like it will rain today. Besides, it will count as my workout for the day. M:I don’t want to let you do this, but I will as long as you agree to call Mom to pick you up. If you
don’t, you won’t get home until dark.
W:Relax. I have a short day today. None of my clubs meets on Tuesdays, so I’ll be home before
Mom even leaves work. We can still cook dinner for her as usual.
    Text 8
W:Are you coming out for a hamburger at lunchtime? I’ll pay. Kate and Tom are going as well. M:I can’t, Amy. I only eat vegetables , and things made out of vegetables.
W:We’re going to have a burger made out of vegetables. Would that be OK?
M:Oh , I’m happy to eat any kind of vegetable.
W:Meals are half price between noon and 1:00 p.m. at that fast food restaurant. We need to go
right at noon because after that there will be a big queue.
M:I’ll have to arrive 10 minutes after you. Could you order my food for me when you get there? W:Of course. We’ll see you there.
    Text 9
W:You were gone for a while. How was Italy?
M:It was beautiful. I loved every minute of it — the people, the art, and the weather. It was all
beautiful. I went to see the clean, white beaches and clear blue waters off the coast of Sardinia.
But they were much more beautiful than I had expected.
W:Sardinia? Is that closer to Malta or Sicily? My geography isn’t great.
M:OK, so, Sicily is to the east of Sardinia. And Malta is a tiny island just south of Sicily. W:Did you go to those islands, either?
M:Oh no. I wanted to relax without the thought of having to move around too much. I’m glad I did,
though. I felt like a true Italian. I had a short sleep in the afternoons just like the locals.
W:Do they have a short sleep every afternoon, or only on weekends, or just sometimes?
M:They have a short sleep every day! They close their stores around one in the afternoon, and then open again in the evening. So I had to make sure that I had food and water during that time.
    Text 10
He won his first Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, won five NBA championship titles, and once scored 81 points in one game. I’m talking about Kobe Bryant. Despite his terrible death in the beginning of 2020, the world continues to celebrate his 20-year basketball career and regard him as one of the best players of all time. Kobe was born in Philadelphia, the US and was named after Japanese “Kobe beef”. He lived as a child in Reggio, Italy, where he considered a soccer career before moving back to the US. Kobe had the chance to go to university in the US, but he didn’t. Instead, he joined the NBA straight from high school in 1996. He joined the Los Angeles Lakers and leaded this team to win the NBA championship title three years in a row, from 2000 to 2002. Kobe was also known for his love of languages and traveling. He could speak Italian and Spanish very well, and even talked about wanting to learn Chinese to help support his educational charity in China. Kobe Bryant will remain a hero to millions of people around the world.
