Having grown up on a farm near Alliston, Ontario, Frederick Banting was a good worker but felt uncomfortable and unaccepted in a town school. Fred hated school. After graduation, he began studies to become a minister. When that did not go well, he changed his goal to medicine. After World War I, the young Canadian doctor returned home to set up his practice. Just then he began to focus on articles on diabetes(糖尿病), a disease that had cost the life of a neighbor's child.
To solve the problem of this disease, Fred asked Dr. J. J. R. Macleod at the University of Toronto for help to lend him a laboratory and was given a young assistant named Charles Best. Fred and Charles worked day and night, but early results in producing the hormone(激 素)preparation they called insulin (胰岛素) were discouraging. Many of the animals they treated died. Finally one animal kept alive for several weeks. The team appeared to be finally getting somewhere, and it was time to move on to human subjects. Before treating human patients, however, Fred and Charles tested the safety of their insulin on each other. Their tests were a triumph
The first patient to be treated was a fourteen-year-old boy named Leonard. The year was 1921. The poor boy weighed only seventy-five pounds, and he was hardly alive. But the new insulin treatment by Fred and Charles was a great success. Leonard gained weight, and his health greatly improved.
In 1923, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded both to Canadian doctors Frederick Banting and J. J. R. Macleod. Fred could have made himself a millionaire with his discovery. Instead, he sold his patent for the production of insulin to the University of Toronto—for one dollar—so that the drug could be marketed cheaply and thousands of lives could be saved and improved.
Fred was just ordinary in many respects but he was a man with the strong will to get to his goal. He had the heart of a true Canadian hero.

    A. Reference. B. Victory. C. Challenge. D. Model
    26. Why did Fred sell his patent?
    A. To make money. B. To earn reputation. C. To promote insulin. D. To benefit patients.
    27. Which of the following is probably the best title for the text?
    A. An Unlikely Hero B. A Chance Discovery
    C. A Successful Test D. A Well—known Scientist
    C
Today when it comes to the use of digital( 数 码 的 )technology, girls have less basic education, leaving them far behind boys. And because the world is more digital, those who lack(缺少)basic internet skills will find it more difficult to take part in the formal economy (经济), to get a quality education, and to have their voices heard.
Since 2013 the global gender gap(性别差异) in male and female about the Internet has actually increased from 11 to 12 percent. Worse yet, women and girls living in the poorest countries are 31 percent less likely than men and boys to surf the Internet. In developing countries, some 200 million fewer women than men own a mobile phone, the most common means of surfing the internet there. This digital divide is increasing, and if it continues at the present pace, it is predicted that over 75 percent of women and girls will lack internet access (进入)and digital skills.
There are many causes of the digital gender gap. They include girls' exclusion (排斥) from basic education, from specific technology education and high costs of mobile phones and internet access.
Indeed, one of the so-called reasons why girls may be discouraged from learning how to access and use digital technology is also a groundless(毫无根据的)one: that girls are simply not good at using technology.
Without the help of the government, most of the benefits of technological change will be enjoyed only by men, making gender inequality even more serious.
    28. What can we know from paragraph 1?
    A. Girls usually don't like to share their ideas.
    B. Girls don't have enough digital knowledge.
    C. Boys are more interested in making money.
    D. Boys may always receive advanced education.
    29. How does the writer make his statement in paragraph 2 ?
    A. By listing numbers. B. By giving reasons.
    C. By following time order. D. By giving examples.
    30. What is the writer's attitude to the idea that girls are simply not good at using technology?
    A. Positive. B. Acceptable. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
    31. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Girls are lacking in education.
    B. Women suffer a lot from poor economy.
    C. Internet continues to develop fast and fast.
    D. Girls are at a disadvantage compared with boys in digital technology.
    D
I've personally traveled through many countries that have had U. S. government warnings issued( 发 布 ) for them, and I've been perfectly safe. In the last year, I have travelled safely to both the Philippines and Mexico, and traveled to many South Pacific islands during the tropical cyclone (热带气旋)season and only experienced two days of light rain in six months!. This is, of course, anecdotal(轶事的), so it's important that you do your research before booking your trip.
One thing I suggest doing is checking for recent posts on travel forums(论坛), such as Lonely Planet's Thorntree, to see what people are saying about the country you'll visit in terms of safety. The U. S. government may make out that the whole country is quite unsafe when in reality, it's a small part of it that tourists will be unlikely to visit. Read the travel warnings, too, to see which parts of the country the government advises you not to visit.
And then, it's worth speaking to your travel insurance provider before you leave to check that you’ll be covered during your travels to these countries. Some insurance(保险)companies won't cover you if there's a severe warning for the country, but some will. Travel insurance is a necessity, so it's something to check out before you leave.
Keep in mind that the U, S. government will help you with emergency evacuation (撤离) from a troubled country, but it comes in the form of a repatriation (归国)loan via the Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management(ACS), which can be called upon to save you from a bad situation abroad. Remember by heart that you'll have to wait overseas for the money to arrive and eventually repay the loan once you're home safely. Just another reason to get travel insurance!
    32. What should you do before a travel according to Paragraph 1?
    A. Make a good route plan. B. Read the travel books first.
    C. Ask the government for help. D. Make a careful study of the trip.
    33. What does the author advise you to check for on travel forums?
    A. Tourist places. B. Travel safety. C. Lonely planet. D. Weather forecast.
    34. Why is it necessary to know about travel insurance companies?
    A. They seldom talk with customers,
    B. They sometimes offer bad service.
    C. They may provide false information.
    D. Some of them don't cover all the countries.
    35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. ACS will repay the loan for you.
    B. U. S government is very generous.
    C. Getting travel insurance is a best choice.
    D. It's easy to escape from a troubled country.

    What Goes Around Comes Around
One day something was wrong with the car of an old lady from St. Louis. She was trapped on the side of the road in the dim light. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Then a man looking poor and hungry pulled up in front of her car and got out. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I'm here to help you,
ma'am. Why not wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson. ”
Bryan crawled (蜷缩)under the car looking for a place to put the jack(千斤顶), skinning
his fingers a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he got dirty and his hands hurt.
The old lady told him she already imagined all the awful things that could have happened if he had not stopped. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid and asked how much she owed him.
Bryan just smiled and told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. Bryan added, “And think of me. ”He never thought twice about being paid. He had lived his whole life that way.
Then the old lady started her car and drove off. A few miles down the road the old lady saw a small dirty—looking restaurant. She went in and ordered a simple meal priced at 5. The waitress was to give birth to her baby in a month but she was still busy clearing tables, filling sugar bowls and serving people. Obviously she must have lived a hard life.
At that moment she remembered Bryan. After finishing the meal, the old lady paid for her food with one 100 bill. The waitress took over the money, saying “Thanks” politely and told her to wait a moment for the change.

M:Generally, Changbaishan International Ski Center takes one and a half hours, while the
latter is half an hour longer.
W:OK. Then we choose the ski center. I'll prepare some food in case we're hungry.
M:Do we have to? I mean, there are plenty of restaurants according to the map.
W:Aren't they expensive? Claudia said she and her husband spent 500 yuan on just a meal
    there!
M:Really? We may as well bring food on our own then.
W:OK. Let's prepare some food now.
    M:I'll check the fridge first.
    (Text 9)回家的交通方式
M:Hello, Gloria! You're not looking happy. What's the matter? Have you been studying too much?
W:Oh, no, that's not it. The problem is that I was planning to go home over spring break, but the travel agent told me all the airlines are fully booked.
    M:Why not go by car?
W:It's too long a trip to take by myself, and gas is so expensive.
M:Have you checked the ride board? Maybe you can get a rider to go with you.
    W:The ride board—what's that?
M:It's a notice board that has a map of the United States on it. The map is divided into different districts, and each district has a different number. Say you want to go to New Eng land—that would be box number one. There are boxes for each number. You can put a white card or a blue card in one of the boxes.
W:What's the difference between a blue card and a white one?
M:Blue means you have a car and need riders to share the driving. White means that you're
    looking for a ride.
W:Sounds good. So where is the ride board?
M:It's on the second floor of the Student Union building, right by the cinema of the college.
    (Text 10)吃热狗比赛
W:Every year, a restaurant called Nathan's Famous has a hot dog eating contest in Brook- lyn, New York to draw attention to the restaurant. The challenge is to see who can eat the most hot dogs in 10 minutes. The contest was held last Saturday and new records were set, but the winners weren't exactly a surprise. Since 2007, Joey Chestnut has won the men's contest every year except one. This year, he set a new record, finishing off 75 hot dogs in 10 minutes. That was two more than last year. He was very fast in the begin- ning. But midway through the contest, he started to slow down. This year's contest was carried live on TV, but because of the coronavirus, it was held in Nathan's Famous. The eaters were separated, and people who gave them hot dogs wore masks. Miki Sudo, who has won the women's contest every year since 2014, also won again. This year, Ms. Sudo set a new women's record by eating 48 and a half hot dogs.
