Four Places Named After Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they’re named for.
    Jones Terrace(梯田)
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica’s Victoria Land bears Jones’ name. In 1969, geochemist Lois M. Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S. to work in Antarctica. Jones and her team studied chemical weathering( 风化作 用) in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an ice-free area of Antarctica. Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected, Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley’s ice-covered lakes.
    Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica’s largest island—Alexander Island—is named for Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic. In 1985, Fiennes became the first female invited to join the Antarctic Club, a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
    Francis Peak
    2

The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica’s Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK. Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica’s abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
    Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica’s Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets. Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying
radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.
21.Which place is named after a builder of radio towers in the Antarctic?
    A. Jones Terrace. B. Mount Fiennes. C. Francis Peak. D. Peden Cliffs.
22.Who proved the previous higher temperatures of the Antarctic?
    A. Lois M. Jones. B. Ginny Fiennes. C. Dame Jane Francis. D. Irene Peden.
    23. What is special about Irene Peden?
    A. She could judge the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.
    B. She discovered a lot of ice-covered lakes in the Antarctic.
    C. She was the first female American to explore the Antarctic.
    D. She correctly measured the spreading speed of radio waves. B
My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood—a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.
My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a rush of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.
And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing October, but this year’s later drop had me change the month: “November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations(星座) above them once again. ”
When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.
    24. What’s unusual this year?
    A. Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.
    B. A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.
    C. The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.
    3

    D. The neighbors’ big tree almost dropped all its leaves within a day.
    25. How does the author feel at the suddenly bare branches in Paragraph 2?
    A. Anxious. B. Sorrowful. C. Comfortable. D. Amazed.
    26. Why are Hal Borland’s lines quoted in Paragraph 3?
    A. To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.
    B. To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.
    C. To express the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.
    D. To emphasize the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.
    27. What is the best title for the text?
    A. The Sky Far Beyond B. The Fall of Massachusetts
    C. The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree D. The Memories of Peace and Beauty C
A new study says the Amazon rainforest is nearing a tipping point(临界点) in its decline that could see the biologically rich and diverse ecosystem turned into a savannah(热带草原).
“The Amazon is losing its ability to recover from disturbances like drought and extreme weather. Deforestation and climate change are likely the main drivers of this decline,” study co-author Niklas Boers said in a statement. The researchers say they’ve found evidence of this decline across 75 percent of the Amazon.
“It’s worth reminding ourselves that if it gets to that tipping point and we commit to losing the Amazon rainforest, we will get significant feedback on global climate change,” said Timothy Lenton, a scientist and co-author of the study.
The research team looked at three decades’ worth of satellite data, paying close attention to trees and other plants after extreme events. The researchers concluded that the forest, which is essential for oxygen production and carbon sequestration(碳封存), has been losing its resilience for the last two decades.
The researchers say the forest is nearing a tipping point, but the arrival date is unclear as a number of factors can push it closer to or farther from that edge. It’s just too challenging to estimate when the change may occur. But the scientists warn that once the tipping point has been crossed, the change could happen quickly.
The news comes after the Amazon recorded record levels of deforestation in Brazil in January. Animal agriculture is causing deforestation in the Amazon, as Brazil is now the world’s top beef exporter. Last November, the EU took steps to ban beef linked to deforestation. “What we propose is a pioneering initiative,” Virginijus Sinkevicius, the EU environment commissioner, said. “The EU action alone will not solve the problem. We also need major markets like the US to clean up their supply chain.”
    28. What can we learn from the study?
    A. The Amazon rainforest is in danger of changing into grassland.
    B. The Amazon rainforest has reached the point of no return.
    C. Scientists are convinced that the change could happen quickly.
    D. Scientists are unclear about what is responsible for the decline.
    29. What does the underlined word “resilience” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. The ability to predict the future. B. The ability to rise to challenges.
    C. The ability to remain unchanged. D. The ability to go back to normal.
    30. What does the EU environment commissioner expect?
    A. Deforestation will become easy to deal with. B. The export of beef should be banned.
    4

    C. More countries should join hands. D. The EU should adopt strict measures.
    31. What is the text likely to be?
    A. An adventure diary. B. A biology textbook.
    C. An official proposal. D. A scientific report. D
The proverb “Work is worship(崇拜)” emphasizes the importance of work in our life. It states that doing work must be the real worship of the life of every human being.
Human beings are considered the most important entity( 独 立 存 在 体 ) in this universe because we are blessed with brains and intelligence. The brain provides the power to think and understand about different things in the world. We all have some purpose in our lives and doing work helps in achieving the purpose of our lives.
It is very important for all the students to understand the importance of work. This stage is very important in every person’s life. The habit that is developed at this age is continued till death. If the students learn to work in this stage they continue the same in future too. For the students, real worship is doing their studies in a sincere way. They need to do regular studies with proper concentration every day.
The students who are attentive and do their work sincerely are rewarded with good marks while the lazy students suffer later in their lives. This is because there is no substitute(代替) for hard work. Hard-working students grow up to become good citizens of society in future. Work teaches the students to be disciplined(自律的) in their life.
Every day we hear of new inventions and achievements made by the people in the world. It could not be possible if the people would not have done their work sincerely. Our history is shining bright because of the great deeds of some great personalities. This is also because of the people who considered their work as worship and performed it honestly. Such people never ran away from doing work. They would not be able to make their names shine in history without hard work. Thus, it can be stated that every success has a big struggle and devotion behind it. People who worship their work can achieve great heights in their life.
“Work is worship” is a popular quote to make people understand the importance of work in everyone’s life. The one who understands the importance of the work does it properly without thinking of the fruit. The fruit will surely be sweet if the effort is honest.
    32. What makes us human beings outstanding in the universe?
    A. The importance of work. B. The blessing of God.
    C. The purpose of life. D. The power of brain.
    33. Why does the author emphasize the importance of work to students?
    A. Work prepares them for the future. B. Work makes them more intelligent.
    C. Work offers them more substitutes. D. Work qualifies them for teaching jobs.
    34. Why does the author talk about inventions in Paragraph 5?
    A. To make them known to the world. B. To honor those great personalities.
    C. To use them as supporting evidence. D. To call on students to invent things.
    35. What is the author’s real purpose of writing the text?
    A. To explain the quote “Work is worship” .
    B. To encourage people to be hardworking.
    C. To teach students to be disciplined in their life.
    D. To analyse the reasons for those great successes.

When my children haven’t played outside enough, I can tell their energy levels will go up and the noise will increase in the house. I feel upset, so I tell them it’s time to go outside. Usually, they complain and come up with reasons why staying in is better, but I insist. Within minutes, they’re out and running around. Sometimes I give them a minimum time limit, say 20 minutes, before they could come back inside. _____36_____
Kids need consistent outdoor play. There are many benefits, and I’d like to share some of them.
Outdoor play is good for kids ’ physical health. _____37_____ Movements like rolling and jumping also stimulate a child’s vestibular system. Outdoor play is beneficial mentally. It makes kids happy. You will see it when they come inside, tired but satisfied. It also gives children a chance to be in a space without fixed rules. There are no requirements to be quiet or stay clean. _____38_____ It helps result in imaginative play and a creative flow state.
_____39_____There’s so much active learning that goes on outdoors. When kids get outdoors, they take the information they’ve heard in the classroom and apply it to real life. For example, building a bridge across a hole that will support the weight or getting the right consistency of mud by mixing dirt and water. They’ll also do better in school after spending more time outside.

As soon as his workday ended, Jordan rushed out of the office. He drove his car to the nearest supermarket to prepare for his mother’s surprise birthday party that evening. Unfortunately for Jordan, it was Friday and the parking lot was crowded with shoppers. He had to drive around looking for a space to park.
After nearly 20 minutes, he noticed a space, but that was specially used for unloading goods. He hesitated for a while, but thinking shopping would take him just a few minutes, he parked his car there and rushed into the supermarket. He hurried down the aisles( 过 道 ), checking the shopping list his sister had messaged him. Soon Jordan had almost everything. Now he just needed to pick out a birthday cake.
“Just a few minutes more,” he repeated these words in his mind several times as he sped down the target aisle. But when he got there, there was a long line of people wanting to buy cakes or cookies. He was getting more and more anxious, and began to regret not ordering a cake the day before.
Half an hour later, it was finally his turn. He asked for a chocolate cake, and carefully placed it in the cart. Now he could go ! Jordan raced towards the nearest till(收款处). “Oh, I really have good luck!” he thought. “There’s no one there!” However, out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone approaching the till ahead of him.
It was a young woman. Thinking he would surely be late if he failed to check out before the woman, he decided to take action. He pushed his shopping cart forward and narrowly missed hitting her. “Hey!” the woman cried. “Be careful. You could have hurt me!”
Jordan felt embarrassed, but he pretended not to hear. He quickly paid for all his goods and rushed out of the supermarket, leaving the woman staring at him from behind. He looked at his
