When my boys were younger, going out with them was difficult. My heart sank during the holiday season every time I looked at the long line of kids waiting to meet Santa. This was not an activity our family could enjoy. The noise and crowds caused sensory (感官的) overload for my five-year-old son Noah, an autistic (患自闭症的) child. I also had a younger son, Henry, who needed an extra hand. Waiting in line was hardly possible.
I always hoped for the best but planned for the worst when I took the boys out of the house, but I knew that attempting to get a picture with Santa wasn’t worth the risk. If we had attempted to stand in line for even a few minutes, I would have been chasing Noah, and Henry would have experienced an emotional breakdown. It was easier to stay at home.
On the afternoon of Christmas Eve a year ago, the phone rang. The voice on the other end of the line said, “If you’re at home this evening, I’d like to arrange for Santa to stop by.” It was Denny, the friendly owner of a company, who had helped us with our do-it-yourself project. In a short time he was at our home, Denny’s kindness and ability to relate to our kids were evident.
I felt nervous and excited about having Santa come to our home. Denny told me it would be well arranged. Would our kids even notice? Would they be frightened by a stranger in a red suit? Would they cry?
A few minutes before I was planning to cook dinner on Christmas Eve, Santa tapped gently on the living-room window. Noah was speechless, and his jaw dropped. Henry, two years old, waved and said, “Hi, Santa!”

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Adam, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.
Entering his room, Adam found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Adam. I … I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.
    “What is it?”
“This afternoon I sneaked (溜) out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Osman Brook’s car. I was so scared and I … I hurried home in panic.”
    “Is the car seriously damaged?”
    “The left headlight got broken.”
“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal,” Adam raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”
The next morning when Adam got up, Bill was still sleeping soundly. Adam was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.
After breakfast, Adam took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Adam shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Osman’s house.
When he arrived, he was welcomed by Osman’s wife Mary, who told him that Osman had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.
“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Adam requested eagerly.
“Of course. He should be home soon,” Mary invited Adam in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.
After half an hour, the door opened and in came Osman. Having said hello to each other, Osman and Adam both sat down on the sofa.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was competent for more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked. “This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to become a guard? ”
“The thought hadn’t crossed my mind.”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class. ”Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me — You never know what you are competent to do until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and attained seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful (平静无事) day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

    The Lost Ball
One day Kaya and I were playing with the ball and the ball went into Taku's house. Though we were scared, we went to his house and asked him if he could return our ball.
He said “No”. We felt helpless. Suddenly, I had an idea. There was a water tank(水箱)behind Taku's house. I looked at it and said, "Kaya, look at this. We can climb up the water tank and jump over the gate."
Kaya agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. We couldn't climb with that.
"It doesn't matter. We can come tomorrow. Don't forget to wear pants." said Kaya.
“Bye,” I said and went home.
The next day I went to Kaya's house early. We were both wearing pants.
"Best of luck!" said Kaya's brother Vijay who knew everything.
He said, “Shout loudly if you need me.”
We went to the water tank. "Who will climb first?" asked Kaya.
    “You!” I said.
    She agreed.
She climbed down into Taku's house. I followed her and then we were looking under a bed for the ball when we heard a noise.
It was Vijay. “Mother is calling you,” he whispered(悄声地说).
We hurried and took out the lost ball. But along with the ball was a gold bar! We quickly took both the ball and the gold bar and climbed up the water tank again. When we reached Kaya's house, the TV was on. It was news time.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

    A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”

A long time ago, when I worked in Ahmedabad, we would often drive to Mount Abu for short trips—it took us anywhere between seven to eight hours to drive up. That year, my close relatives were visiting from Lucknow during the holidays, and we made a plan to visit Abu for three days. Since there were seven of us, including my brother’s family who also lived in Ahmedabad, we hired two cabs. We picked ourselves into the vehicles, stacked (堆放) our luggage on the carriers on top and started out.
A good time was bad by all, and soon it was time to return. During the journey back, we stopped at a Dhaba for tea and snacks near the Mehana district. That’s when I noticed suddenly that the rope with which the luggage was tied on and of the carriers had come loose and one of the suitcases was missing. It must have fallen off somewhere along the way.
Although it didn’t contain any valuables—just clothes and some cash, we decided to retrace our steps, drawing back four kilometres, looking for the bag. But luck wasn’t our friend: we could not locate it and returned to Ahmedabad depressed.
After about a month, one day, while in my office, I got a call from my assistant that a certain Mr. Shah wanted to see me. I was in the middle of a meeting so he was asked to wait. After I got done, I called him into my office.
I was looking after the development of small industries in the state at the time, so my immediate query was. “How can we help you? Do you want to set up an industry or are you facing any issues in your enterprise?”
To which he said, “No, sir. I have not come for any official help. It is a personal matter. Did you lose something recently?”
Of course, it all came back to me and I told him about the lost suitcase from the cab back from Mount Abu a month ago.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place to keep my private stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one. It didn’t look too cool, but I thought that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out. I felt something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right. Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).
    “I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I wished there were some one I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it...right? Thoughts ran through my mind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

“Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…”
Danny sang while his fingers pressed and pulled skillfully at the guitar strings, delivering a slow and peaceful tune. A circle of audience had formed, nodding and moving slowly to the song.
Lying at the feet of the street performer was his most adoring fan: One-Eyed, a white stray (流浪) dog with pieces of brown. Danny felt the name was suitable considering its physical disability. Usually, One-Eyed would bark loudly as Danny performed. Much to his annoyance, people often mistook the pair as owner and pet. At this time, Danny would reply, “My dog? No!”, eyes rolling at the idea. How he wished the dog would leave him alone instead!
On a snowy night, while Danny was performing, a bird flew downward, landing into the midst of the crowd. It cooed happily as if to harmonize with Danny. Unfortunately, that did not sit well with One-Eyed, which immediately bounced at it and the bird flew away desperately.
The unexpected chaos upturned Danny's hat, which could have been filled with notes and coins from his appreciative audience, leaving it ignored on the ground. "Argh! The hateful dog!” Danny broke down, thinking to himself, “Either the dog goes or I go!”
On the next night, Danny tried to find a new place and chanced upon the park. For a while his earnings were good unsurprisingly as there was a steady flow of visitors. However, that didn't last long. One-Eyed came along and appointed itself as Danny's guardian. "Argh! Here comes the hateful dog again!" That night, Danny hadn't made enough money he should have, all thanks to the troublesome dog.
Danny was almost mad with One-Eyed. “What should I do? Call an animal shelter?” Torn by this problem, he walked aimlessly by the lake of the park. With all his mind focused on how to get rid of the dog, Danny didn't watch his steps. Suddenly, he slipped and fell into the lake accidentally. Struggling in the icy water, he cried for help desperately, almost choking to death. Sensing the approach of death, Danny got into overwhelming panic.

When we are having quarrels with others, it is easy to say or do hurtful things in anger. The verbal wound can be as bad as a physical one. And no matter how many times you say you are sorry, or how many years pass, the scar of those wounds will still be there. If we are wise, we will spend our time building bridges rather than barriers in our relationships.
Once upon a time there was a little boy who was talented, creative, handsome, and extremely bright. A natural leader. The kind of person everyone would normally have wanted on their team or project. But he was also self-centered and had a very bad temper. When he got angry, he usually said, and often did, some very hurtful things. In fact, he seemed to have little regard for those around him, even friends. So, naturally, he had few. “But, “he told himself, “that just shows how stupid most people are! “
One day at school, when having a craft class, his partner accidentally crushed a small part of their handiwork. The boy immediately got extremely angry, starting to criticize and tease her. “You disgust me! “After hearing those hurtful words, she started to cry uncontrollably. Before long, the girl began shutting herself away from everyone and was seized by a sense of worthlessness. Fortunately, under the guidance of teachers, she broke away from the trap of worthlessness. But she never talked with the boy.
Having known what happened at school, the boy’s parents became concerned about this personality flaw, and thought long and hard about what they should do. Finally, the father had an idea. And he struck a bargain with his son. He gave him a bag of nails, and a big hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper, “he told the boy, “I want you to really let it out. Just take a nail and drive it into the oak boards of that old fence out back. Hit that nail as hard as you can!

1.Excited and nervous, I opened the door and Santa stepped inside. Santa brought some candy, smiling heartily. He greeted my children and handed out the candy. My children were not frightened, but felt very interested. Before Henry was invited, he ran over, took Santa’s hand and asked to take pictures together. Then, I took Noah’s hand, and he walked shyly to Santa. Santa kindly held him in his arms and took pictures with him. I felt warm and happy in my heart.
Santa left after staying for only a few minutes and tears streamed down my face. Without Denny’s Santa, my children would have to stay at home alone. How sad it was to see my sons not make it to the line while other children happily waited to have their picture taken with Santa. Now, Santa came to my house to solve my urgent need, how could I not be touched? I will always thank Danny for his Santa. I will always treasure these pictures, which are full of love. I will always remember the children’s sweet smiles, which are full of happiness.

We are awfully sorry for that.” “Oh, I see. But it’s no big deal,” Osman smiled. Then Adam drew out the money from his pocket and said to Osman with sincerity, “This is all the money I have. I wonder if it can pay for your loss.” However, Osman insisted that it was only minor damage and declined to take it.
Just then, there came a knock at the door. Osman went to answer it, only to find Bill standing outside. “Morning, Mr. Brook. I … I’ve come to say sorry for …” Bill stammered. But Osman laughed and let him in. The two brothers were both surprised and glad to see each other. Osman gave them a thumbs-up and praised them happily, “Good boys, I truly appreciate your honesty. 3.“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. As it turned out, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands and struggling in the water desperately. Without a second thought, I dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had nearly sunk to the bottom of the pool, his face pale and his head hanging down, which threw me into great concern and huge panic. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside with all my strength, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. It came as a shock to me that he wasn’t breathing. To make matters worse, I could hardly feel his heartbeat. Every second counted! Without the slightest hesitation I did first aid to him, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as I had been trained before. After what seemed a century, I suddenly felt his body moved, a stream of water bursting out of his mouth, and then came the sound of the boy coughing intensely. Seeing the boy come back to life, those surrounding us burst into cheers. Realizing that all my efforts eventually paid off, I breathed a sigh of relief, a smile lighting up my face.

5.As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. Jack said, “What kind of tree should we pick for the walking stick?” Berlin thought for a moment and said, “I think we should choose a straight tree, so no knots will scratch grandpa’s hands.” Jack nodded his head in agreement. They found a straight tree and set to work. They cut the tree down, and with a knife they took the bark off. It was a wonderful tree, which was smooth and was just of the right size. They thought grandpa would love it.
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. When grandpa took the cane, his hands shook with joy, thinking, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack said, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods.” Grandpa smiled and decided to give it a try so as not to make his grandchildren disappointed. He held the cane in his right hand and the arm of his chair in his left hand. He stood up with strength on his legs. Everyone was surprised and excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed a tear coming from the corner of his grandfather’s eye.

    7.     Then Shah told his side of the story. While driving home, he noticed a suitcase lying by the side of the road. He left a message at the Lost and Found, but no one approached him for the suitcase. About a month passed, he could do nothing but break open the lock and found my name and address inside. Words failed me to convey my thanks for his kindness and generosity. Of course, I mentioned that I would visit his residence in the evening and collect my bag.
But the gentleman insisted on delivering the suitcase to me. In the evening he and his wife came to my house with the suitcase. We chatted over tea. I thanked them again. It was not for the belongings but for the efforts they spared to find me. We remained in touch for quite some time afterwards, but somehow we lost touch with each other. Hats off to him, the man who makes me realize that kindness still rules the world.

8.I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. When my parents saw what I had found in the drawer they were wide-eyed and speechless! Then, they read the papers carefully and were moved to tears. When they asked, “What should we do?” I said, “Let’s take it back to the store and find her family.” My father nodded with a smile on his face and my mother hugged me warmly, saying “You are my pride, dear.” I felt very happy because I already knew right from wrong. We collected all the money and papers at once, putting them in the drawer. We rushed to the charity shop with the drawer in the hope to find the owner as soon as possible.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find the family’s telephone number. Within a few minutes, the family all came over. When I showed them what I had found in the drawer, they couldn’t believe their eyes. The parents had tears in their eyes. They were still sad about the lady’s death and the father had just lost his job. It was easy to see that my act of honesty gave them hope. They showed me sincere gratitude from the bottom of their hearts. In fact, I had never felt better before. No new bicycle could have made me felt as good about myself as I felt that day because I passed a very important test—a lost and found test of my own character.

Just then, a familiar barking was heard in the distance. In a split second, a splash of brown, out of breath, quickly jumped into the lake. It was One-Eyed! It barked, swimming toward Danny with all its might. On spotting One-Eyed, Danny seemed to see a ray of hope, attempting to move towards it instantly. Instinctively, Danny grabbed the tail of One-Eyed. Ultimately, they managed to climb ashore, exhausted. Gazing at One-Eyed in disbelief, Danny patted it tenderly in return. One-Eyed was no longer troublesome; instead, it became a “hero” in his heart.
“My hero! Thank you for saving me," Danny said gratefully with watery eyes. “You're my brave guardian angel!” Since that night, “One-Eyed” was nonexistent while “Hero”, as the dog was re-named, became a part of Danny's performance. So attached were they to each other that they became genuine partners. Danny would include his pet as he engaged the audience. Hero also had its own place to lie on-the feet of Danny. While Danny played guitar, Hero would bark happily to harmonize with his owner. What a perfect match!

Little by little, the number became less. Holding his temper proved to be easier than driving nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He took pride in himself as he told his parents about his progress.
To show him what remained in the fence, his father told him to pull out one nail each time he controlled his temper. He did as his father told him. Finally, one day the boy was able to report excitedly that all the nails were gone. At that point, the father asked his son to take one more look at the fence. The young boy found many holes were left. The father said: “No matter what happens from now on, the fence will never be the same. Saying or doing hurtful things in anger produces the same result. So we need to avoid as many of those hurts as we can.”The boy nodded with satisfaction.
