A
The days of stopping at one store and buying everything in one location are long gone. We’ve put together a list of items you shouldn’t buy at the grocery store and we show you where to get them.
Tuna
Essentially a product from Chicken of the Sea, 5 ounce cans of Van Camp’s Chunk White Albacore Tuna in Water are available for $1 per can at Dollar Tree. A similar product in the grocery store costs 59 cents more per can.
Olive Oil
Is it really worth buying expensive olive oil? We don’t think so. This 68 ounce Iberia Premium Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil sells at Target for $9.69. Reviewers love this less expensive alternative saying it’s great for everything. Compare it with a standard 17 ounce size of Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil ——much less oil, selling for roughly the same $9.99 when it’s not on sale.
Vitamins
You might not realize the money you can reap on vitamins simply by buying them at a different store. A 100 count bottle of vitamin D softgels can run to $11.29 at Walmart. A 180 count bottle of Trader Joe’s vitamin D 1000 iu softgels is only $11.99. That’s almost double the amount.
Storage Containers
2
For storing food, children’s supplies, or whatever your household needs may be, there’s nothing better than plastic storage containers. But why pay through the nose for them? Albertsons has two half cup Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids food storage containers at $ 6.89. But you can buy six of those from Target for $7.99—four more for about a dollar.
Socks
Dollar Tree has a good selection of men’s, women’s, and children’s socks. Women’s mini crew socks come in a three count pack for $1. A three count of similar socks at Albertson’s will cost $ 6.59 and there are not many kinds.
21. How much does a can of similar Tuna in the grocery store probably cost?
A.$0.95. B.$1. C.$1.59. D.$0.41.
22. What can you get a better deal on at Trade Joe’s?
A.vitamins B.olive oil C.storage containers D.socks
23. Who might be the target readers of the passage?
A.Manufacturers. B.Housewives. C.Store owners. D.Health experts.
B
As I cried in a hotel room in Osaka, a phone pressed to my right ear, my father was giving me his final advice from
his death bed in Ireland. The man who inspired me to become a travel journalist wanted to remind me I had the best job in the world.
While “don't stop” was his last message to me, “won't stop” could have been his motto(座右铭). Even as he entered
his late 60s, badly affected by a physical disability, my father continued to travel. Not package holidays or lying in a hammock(吊床). Instead, he explored foreign cities on foot until they seeped into his pores. Adventures were what he desired.
Once I began traveling with my father 15 years ago, small talk invariably transitioned to discussion of our next
journey. I loved few things more than surprising him with a new trip I'd booked for us. This was how our final adventure began.
In our Athens apartment, I found his feet swelled up (肿 胀 ) enormously. His ankles had given him constant
discomfort. Whenever I suggested we take a break, he'd say: “You can sit down if you want; I've got something I want to go see over there.” His physical limitations were simply overpowered by his desire to experience something new. He walked all over Bucharest, Athens, and Rome. By the end of the trip, his mind could no longer override his body. His left ankle was twice the size of his right. His chest was congested(充血的).
Dad spent weeks in hospital back in Ireland. He was completely paralyzed (瘫痪的),unable to see or talk or eat.
Yet, he remained conscious. Doctors encouraged us to chat to him, even though he could not respond. Day after day, I sat by his hospital bed and talked about our funniest moments while traveling. Eventually, he came out of his paralysis. When doctors said he was almost ready to go home, I took the chance to fly to Asia for my journalism job.
Then, in the middle of a cold night, my phone rang. Our final conversation took place. Jokes were exchanged, and
promises were made. Among them was my agreement that I wouldn't stop traveling.
24.What did the author love doing after joining his dad in adventure?
A. Visiting Asian countries.
B. Reading adventure novels.
C. Surprising his dad with his adventures.
D. Arranging trips unexpected to his dad.
25.What can we learn about the author's dad?
A. He worked as a journalist.
B. He was a man of strong will.
C. He desired to be a famous explorer.
D. He enjoyed hiking in the mountains.
26.What did the author do while keeping his dad company in hospital?
A. He told stories to his dad.
B. He planned their next trip.
C. He assisted his dad to do exercise.
D. He looked back on their time spent together.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A. My dad, the explorer
B. A half-done journey
C. A parting gift-don't stop
D. One last journey with my dad
C
The Kirtland’s warbler(莺) has required protections since the foundation of Endangered Species Act (ESA), but that’
s about to change. The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) today announced it is removing the songbird from the endangered species list.
“The effort to recover the Kirtland’s warbler is a successful example of how to save endangered species,” said
Margaret Everson, director of FWS. “The Kirtland’s warbler has responded well to active management over the half
century.” In 1971, the Kirtland’s warbler population declined to approximately 201 singing males and had habitats in only six counties. By 2015, the population reached 2,383 singing males and had spread geographically. FWS regularly noted the singing of male warblers during the breeding season made counting possible.
“The negative factors for the development of the recovery plan have been dealt with,” said FWS. Modern wildfire
suppression(扑灭) practices enabled the growth of the jack pine forests favored by the species, FWS noted. Michigan state has replanted approximately 90,000 acres of Kirtland’s warbler habitat over the past 30 years. Timber(木 材 ) incomes offset the cost of replanting jack pine needed to support a survivable bird population.
But while the bird is falling off the ESA list, officials note that it remains a “conservation-dependent species”.
Conservation of the Kirtland’s warbler will continue to require an approach for carrying out future conservation work, like partnerships and enough financial support, FWS stated. Under the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the Kirtland’s warbler was listed as an endangered species in 1967.
“This remarkable bird has a most impressive success story that illustrates effective conservation and cooperation at
work,” added Heather Good, executive director of Michigan Audubon. Shawn Graff, vice president of American Bird Conservancy’s Great Lakes program, pointed out the delisting(除 名 ) is “cause for celebration and proof that the Endangered Species Act works.”
28. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A journal. B.A novel.
C. A news report. D.A fashion magazine.
29. What does the underlined word “offset” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Make up for. B.Add to. C.Fix. D.Prevent.
30. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the recovery of Kirtland’s warbler?
A.Financial support. B. Cooperative work.
C.The foundation of FWS. D.The control of wildfire.
31. What can be concluded from the passage?
A.The male Kirtland’s warblers seldom sing in the breeding season.
B.Heather Good was not very satisfied with the conversation work.
C.The Kirtland’s warbler was listed as an endangered species only in one state.
D.Margaret Everson thought highly of the conservation of the Kirtland’s warbler.

Yesterday, people on the social media site Twitter reacted with surprise and humor to a report that claimed, “Scientists have taught spinach(菠菜) to send emails.” That’s not exactly true, but the “news” is based on some amazing work done by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) scientists in 2016, and it’s still worth learning about.
Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach plants into natural sensors(感应器) which can detect
chemicals used in bombs. Using a cheap and small computer system, the spinach can even send a warning email.
The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotechnology. For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of nanotech materials into spinach plants: some were tiny sensors; others were tiny tubes called carbon nanotubes. To get the tiny materials into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing the nano-materials on the bottom of the plants’ leaves. That’s where the plants normally take in CO2 gas.
Once the tiny sensors and nanotubes were in the spinach leaves, the plants did the rest of the work. As part of their
natural process, the spinach plants pull water through their roots and into their leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals that are used in bombs, the sensors in the leaves make the nanotubes give off a slightly different kind of light.
By watching the plants constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that
can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are detected in the water.
The researchers say it takes about 10 minutes for the plants to react to the chemicals. The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cellphone with its camera changed slightly.
Detecting chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. The scientists believe
that in the future, such a system could give farmers detailed information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
32. Why is the report mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To tell a joke made by MIT scientists.
B.To introduce the health benefits of spinach.
C.To criticize misleading news on social media.
D.To bring up the topic of a scientific experiment.
33.What is the function carton nanotubes in spinach leaves?
A.To supply energy to spinach.
B.To detect spinach’s lack of water.
C.To measure CO2 absorbed by spinach.
D.To make spinach shine in a special way.
34.What do the scientists expect of their system?
A.It will take effect immediately.
B.It will be applied to agriculture.
C.It will be expanded to other plants.
D.It will use a playing card-sized cellphone.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.Scientists teach spinach to send work emails.
B.Scientists create spinach that can test for bombs.
C.Scientists change the composition of spinach we eat.
D.Scientists use nanotechnology to boost spinach production.

Wanting to be more responsible is admirable. Being responsible can seem hard at first, but if you keep at it, it will
become second nature to you! Below are some tips on how to become responsible.
Place others’ needs before your own. When you have a family, friends, or pets, being responsible may mean placing
their needs above your own. That doesn’t mean you don’t take care of yourself. 36 .
Learn to think about other people's thoughts and feelings. Empathy is feeling what other people feel. When you say something or do something, think about how it will make the other person feel. If you’re not sure, consider how it would
make you feel. 37 .
Make a schedule to plan your time. Whether you have a daily planner or use a phone app, a schedule helps you stay
on top of your responsibilities. It reminds you of what you need to be doing. 38 . Write out the appointments
you have, the places you go every day, and the chores you need to get done each day.
39 . One aspect of being responsible is not putting off your tasks until after you’ve had fun. Start by
doing what you need to get done first, and then you can relax and have fun afterward.
Keep your long-term commitments. When something is fun and new, it’s easy to be committed to it.
40 . Whether it’s being in a club, taking a leadership role in a community organization, or volunteering, you have to
be in it for the long term.

根据Tuna部分的“Essentially a product from Chicken of the Sea, 5-ounce cans of Van Camp’s Chunk White Albacore Tuna in Water are available for $1 per can at Dollar Tree. A similar product in the grocery store costs 59 cents more per can.(基本上是一种来自Chicken of the Sea的产品,5盎司罐装的Van Camp的大块白色长鳍金枪鱼在Dollar Tree的售价为1美元/罐。杂货店的一种类似的产品每罐贵59美分)”可知,杂货店买一罐类似的金枪鱼大概要$1.59(1美元+59美分)。
22.细节理解题。根据Vitamins部分的“A 180count bottle of Trader Joe’s vitamin D 1000 iu softgels is only $11.99. That’s almost double the amount. (一瓶180支的Trader Joe’s维生素D,1000 iu软胶囊只需11.99美元。这几乎是总数的两倍)”可知,可以在Trade Joe’s买到更便宜的维生素。
23.推理判断题。根据第一段“The days of stopping at one store and buying everything in one location are long gone. We’ve put together a list of items you shouldn’t buy at the grocery store and we show you where to get them. (在一家商店停下来,在一个地方买所有东西的日子早已一去不复返了。我们已经列出了一份你不应该在杂货店购买的物品清单,并告诉你在哪里可以买到它们)”结合下文介绍的商品可知,推荐的都是些家庭日常用品、食物。由此推知,本文针对的读者是家庭主妇。
24-27 DBDC
本文是记叙文。热爱旅行的父亲在弥留之际告诉“我”不要 放弃旅行。
24. 细节理解题。根据第三段中的 Once I began traveling with my father 15 years ago ... I loved few things more than surprising him with a new trip I'd booked for us可知,作者自从 和父亲一起旅行后,最喜欢安排父亲意想不到的旅行。
Even as he entered his late 60s, badly affected by a physical disability, my father continued to travel以及第四段的? 第二段中的until they seeped into his pores表示 “直到父亲深刻了解这些国家”。
Day after day, I sat by his hospital bed and talked about our funniest moments while traveling
全文直接引用相关专家的观点如:第二段“The effort to recover the Kirtland’s warbler is a successful example of how to save endangered species,” said Margaret Everson, director of FWS. “The Kirtland’s warbler has responded well to active management over the half century.(“恢复科特兰莺的努力是拯救濒危物种的一个成功例子,”FWS主任玛格丽特·埃弗森(Margaret Everson)说。“半个世纪以来,科特兰的莺在积极的管理下表现良好。”)”和最后一段“This remarkable bird has a most impressive, exemplary success story that illustrates effective conservation and cooperation at work,” added Heather Good, executive director of Michigan Audubon(密歇根奥杜邦的执行董事希瑟·古德补充说:“这种非凡的鸟类有着令人印象深刻的成功故事,说明了有效的保护和合作在工作中发挥了作用。”)”
根据划线词所在句的前句“Michigan State has replanted approximately 90 , 000 acres of Kirtland’s warbler habitat over the past 30 years. (在过去30年里,密歇根州已经在科特兰的莺栖地重新种植了大约9万英亩)”可知,密欧根州重新种了很多叶松,作为野莺栖息地。根据常识判断,该州这一做法是要花钱的。根据画线词所在句“Timber incomes offset the cost of replanting jack pine”可知,重新种树的花销被木材收入给offset了,根据常识及逻辑可判断,此处offset意为“抵消”。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“Conservation of the Kirtland’s warbler will continue to require a harmonious approach for carrying out future conservation work, like partnerships and sufficient funding(保护科特兰野莺将继续需要一个和谐的方式来开展未来的保护工作,比如合作关系和充足的资金)”可知,对这些野莺的保护仍然需要合作以及充足的资金,故A、B项相关;再根据第三段“Modern wildfire suppression practices greatly altered the natural disturbance system, which enabled the growth of the jack pine forests favored by the species(现代扑灭野火的措施极大地改变了自然干扰系统,使得受科特兰野莺青睐的针叶松林得以生长)”可知,扑灭野火也相关。
根据第二段“The effort to recover the Kirtland’s warbler is a successful example of how to save endangered species(恢复科特兰野莺的努力是拯救濒危物种的成功范例)”可知,Everson对该保育案例是赞赏的。

Text 10
W: Stephen King is a contemporary American author. His books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide and have been translated into many languages. Many of his stories are set in his home state of Maine. When he was a young boy, King witnessed one of his friends being struck and killed by a train. Some people have suggested that this is why he frequently writes about death. But when he wrote an autobiography about becoming a writer, he did not mention this incident. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in English. He occasionally sold short stories, but it wasn’t until 1974 that he published his first novel Carrie. Surprisingly, he had given up on this story in its early stages and thrown it away. Luckily, his wife found it in the trash can and told him to keep working on it. He made enough money from the publication of that book to be able to write full-time.
