The afternoon was hot and fierce as the midday sun shone with all its might. Richard had just gotten down from a truck and could barely stand on the hot road. He breathed heavily, looking around for a frozen drink. But as far as his eyes could see, there was not a drop of water. Suddenly, he noticed a little bike lying there.
Richard wondered and approached the spot, staring with shock at a water bottle and a small pink helmet lying nearby. He went closer and noticed fresh little muddy footsteps disappearing into the woods...It seemed unusual for a little kid to be all alone there. “Something was wrong,” so he cupped his hands around his mouth and called out to the child.
“Hello, anyone there? Hello?”
Just a she changed course, he heard a faint (模糊的) cry from the heart of the woods. It was a little girl’s cry for help.
“HELP...I’M STUCK...HELP...”
“I’m coming. Hold on,” Richard rushed toward the voice. A she got nearer and nearer, Richard heard the sound of running water. The fierce current in the muddy-brown river flooded through the rocks.
“Don’t give up! I’m coming!” her an screaming after noticing a little girl and her dog holding on to a log floating on the river. The current was washing away everything on its course, and the girl was lucky the log was stuck on to something under the surface. But that would not hold on for long as the current grew faster and stronger.
Richard was running out of time. He could not think of anything immediately. His only hope was to somehow pull the two out to the shore before they were washed toward the edge of the waterfall, which was just meters away. Just then, his mind acted fast, and he ran back to get something. “Hold on...I’ll be right back,” he assured her.

I was 400 meters from the finish line when my legs stopped working during the State cross-country race. In a moment faster than I could imagine, I watched my dreams crash helplessly to the ground. Lifting my face from the dirt, I looked up and saw my dad’s face.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was proud of my success in running.
He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a dream passed on from one generation to the next.
I’ll never forget that day. It was hotter than normal — too hot, I waited for the gun to fire. This was the day we had waited so long for. I glanced at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from school came into my view. They had come for me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement appeared on his face. Adrenaline (肾上腺素) flowed through my body, and the race began.
For the first 2.5 miles, I felt great. I’d never been so ready for something. Determination focused my mind and guided my steps. As in all of my races, I didn’t star out in the front. I loved the feeling of passing people as my endurance (耐力) overtook their premature speed.
Without warning, my strength began to disappear. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet became stuck. I still don’t know what happened in those last few moments. Neck and neck with my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line, but nothing I could do would make my legs hold my weight. They were as weak as cotton.

One day before Christmas, Nicole went to a supermarket near her home with her mother, Jessica, and her younger brother, Steven, to buy Christmas presents. She bought a very cute little teddy bear (泰迪熊) and she loved it very much.
It was snowing that day, but it soon stopped. And it started to clear up. So they planned to go for a walk along a local river together. It didn’t take long for Steven to start getting bored. He offered to play with his sister’s toy for a while. Nicole happily gave Steven her beloved teddy bear. As soon as Steven got the toy, he started playing with it. He even threw it into the air to show how strong he was. However, Steven threw the teddy bear into the river accidentally. Seeing what happened, Nicole was very sad, crying out loud.
The toy disappeared with the current. It was very cold, so it was impossible to go down to the river to pick up the teddy bear. Steven just stood there silently. Jessica saw the scene, and she knew she had to comfort Nicole and teach Steven a lesson.
With disappointment and sadness, Nicole walked quickly back home. Minutes later, Steven came up with an idea. He urged his mom to reach out to neighbors to see if anyone might be able to help find the toy. “I don’t want to bother anyone. I don’t think anyone would care,” Jessica said. But Steven convinced her to give it a shot. So she included the news in her personal social media and said, “If anyone happens to see the teddy bear in the river, please help us pick it up. My kids will be grateful.” She uploaded a photo of the teddy bear.
A local search and rescue team saw the news and its captain, Adam, decided to help. As hard as it was to believe, a task to rescue the teddy bear was quickly spreading. After several hours of searching, the toy was successfully located, which made the young owner very happy.

Have you ever noticed how certain smells can call up particular emotions or memories? A whiff of perfume(一阵香水味)or after-shave recalls a favorite person; the delicious smell of warm bread tickles the taste buds(味蕾).
Think about newly cut grass or how the air smells after a thunderstorm. Burning leaves on fresh and cold fall days always remind me of the football at the weekend. Perhaps the smells that surround Christmas carry the most memories. The fresh green smell of pine trees; the fragrances of a variety of food, especially the ones given off by cookies being baked in an oven and hot chocolate. Moreover, the scent of wood smoke around the burning fire can also bring warmth and the comfortable feeling to our mind. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.
But the smell I associate best with Christmas and winter is a wet dog. Our dog was mostly an outdoor dog and was often wet completely in the rain. We tried to dry him off as soon as he came in, grabbing the old, dirty towel by the door. He usually shook himself before we could catch him. The walls of the back entry were always spotted with brown mud all winter. We brushed him regularly in spring and summer when winter fur fell out by handfuls, but baths were rare. So, of course, his smell built up over time. Try as we might, we never could completely get rid of that smell. It lay hidden deep in his fur and skin.
The distinctive smell of the wet dog was a reminder of the Christmas vacation when I was twelve, and the cousins from Ohio were visiting. We had gotten shiny, slippery flying saucers as gifts and were also blessed with fresh snow. The four of us spent as much time as possible sliding down the short hill to the pond. Naturally, we tested the ice on the pond before sliding the first day, and we knew we could slide across it and lengthen our ride.

Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The two-hundred-metre breaststroke (蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke (仰泳) I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn’t help. My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water. Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think. Or maybe Coach Cafferty just want to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool,” I thought desperately. I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.
I hesitated. Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster. I lost rhythm on my strokes. I messed up my turns. I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times. I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks? But once I dragged myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated, Coach Cafferty thumbed up to me, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practice.
On the way back home, Morgan comforted me, “Dear, just ignore others. Race against yourself. Count your own strokes. Prove to yourself that you can do it.” With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed: both how I swam the breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came. I arrived at the pool hall, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine, my knees shook. I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. Morgan leaned forward. “Just swim your race. Remember, you can!”

Going to the post office is usually a weekly event for me. I rarely give it any thought other than to drive there, go inside, and drop off my letter or package. However, our world has changed and now I must give careful consideration to this journey, as my age and preexisting condition put me into the “vulnerable” category. I am worried about getting infected with the pandemic. There are decisions that I need to make. Is this a package that must go out now? I conclude that it is. Is there anyone else who can take the package for me? I conclude there is not. So I have made two decisions already. Next, I must determine which of the two post offices closest to me would be the easiest one to accomplish my goal. I realize the larger one would be my best choice. Three decisions have been made!
On the drive over, I determined that I would look to see the number of cars in the parking lot before making my decision to go in. Upon arriving, I concluded that the car population was small enough, so I pulled into an empty space. My next thought was,” Perhaps I should wait for someone to come out and ask them to take my package in? “Then I realized, I would be making contact with a perfect stranger, and what was the difference between talking to that stranger and just going in and talking to the clerk? Next decision made, I walked inside. There were only two people and both were standing at the counters making their transactions (业务). I walked to the front of what was normally a very long line. I was standing alone, waiting for my turn. I was wondering whether this place had been disinfected (消毒) and was safe to stay here.
Shortly, I was called to the window. I could see that the postal clerk was aware of the fear in my eyes. She quietly stepped back from her station and signed to me to come forward. I stepped up to the counter and placed my package on the scale (秤).

Jean’s dream was to be a great chef, so when she was 20, she travelled to France, which has the most famous cuisine in the world, to learn to cook. After twelve years, she was among the best.
Her father, Bob, was getting old, and she wanted to be near him. Jean accepted an offer from one of Washington’s top restaurants. The manager offered her a handsome salary, and 30% ownership of the restaurant. The next day, Jean went to sign the contract. As she got out of the car, she caught sight of a green sunshade. Instead of going to meet the manager, she crossed the street towards the old restaurant, Fargonetti’s. She pushed open the door and the memories came flooding back.
Jean’s mum died when she was just 11, and her father lost his job and was forced to freelance (从事自由职业). Money was very short. When Jean turned thirteen, Bob had made a reservation at Fargonetti’s, the capital’s best restaurant.
“I’m not hungry, baby girl. I had a huge breakfast,” Bob said. “This is all for you!” “Oh,” Jean cried. “Daddy was so silly! He’s been saving to come here for lunch for MONTHS and now he ruined his appetite with breakfast!” The waiter, Carl Bader, immediately realised what was going on and went to Mr Fargonetti, the restaurant owner, and told him about Jean and Bob.
An hour later, surprisingly, the waiter brought wonderful dishes and set them before the father and daughter. “Lunch is on the house with Mr Fargoneti’s compliments (致意),” Carl said. For Bob and Jean, it was a free but magical meal. They were on cloud nine when they walked out. “Jean,“ said Bob happily. “I feel our luck has changed!” And it did! The next day, one of Bob’s old friends called and offered him a job at a new magazine, and Jean believed Fargonetti’s had made it all happen. That was when she decided to become a chef!
Twenty years later, the old restaurant looked run-down and sad, but Jean recognised the waiter immediately. “Carl?” she asked delightedly.

I feared going into my room after school. Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room. Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. Still, I wouldn’t believe. Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate. Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her. As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet. I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me. A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands. I was surprised that they didn’t stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over. “Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile. I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet. “Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet. I found a strong smell of cheese from them. Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room? A voice raced across my mind. No way. Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror. I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

For years, I posted pictures of my grandson, cute animals and delicious dishes, and video clips of people’s funy behaviour and the like on Facebook. Moreover, I played a farm game or two on this popular social media site. I thought Facebook was for fun, but I never expected a post I saw on Facebook could have a significant impact on my life.
On November 12th, 2010, I was on my way to a conference by plane. Suddenly, I suffered a heart attack. Luckily, there were three doctors on board. In less than a minute, I was given first aid. I survived, but months later, I was still trying to come to terms with what had happened. So I began to record how I survived this incident as well as my ideas about life on Facebook daily, and started to care about Facebook posts that had nothing to do with fun.
One morning on March, 2011, I looked through my Facebook feed and saw a friend’s post. She wrote, “Let go of anything unrealistic and all activities that do not mirror your brightest intentions for yourself.” The words touched me greatly. That night, I copied them onto a clean piece of paper and taped it to my laptop.
Actually, I was crazy about farm games then. I, along with many of my friends, played FarmVille. But one little farm game was not enough for me. I thought I needed more farms, more crops, and more livestock. All were in virtual form,of course. I had five different farms in five different games. And I spent hours on my farms every day. While attending to my virtual farms one day I looked out of the window and noticed the empty land in our backyard.

Having worked at a small food store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager called “customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “madam”, “thank you” and “sorry” would see me through any situation. But on a Christmas night an old woman shook my belief that such a glib (油嘴滑舌的) response could smooth over any difficulty while dealing with other human beings.
The moment she entered the store, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door. On such a zero-degree night, she was wearing only a faded print dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out to expose heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined (青筋的) legs.
After walking around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables. She looked at the row of cans, finally picked up a can of corn and stared at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good and polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain. An unpleasant smell of sweat rose from her torn clothing.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Madam, can I help you?”
“Are you looking for corn, madam?”
“I need some food,” she repeated, looking down at the can in her hand, “Any kind.”
“Well, the can of corn is ninety-five cents, madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn. Then the employee rules flooded into my mind: remain polite but do not let the customers take advantage of you.
