I am Tom from Canada and I am a big reader. I can read both French and English books. The mysterious (神秘的) Stranger is one of the most exciting books I have ever read. It’s not only a mystery story, as the book name suggests, but it’s also very funny. It will make you laugh out loud!
The story is set in New York, America and it’s all about a man called Harry who meets a stranger one day while eating his lunch in the park. The stranger, Mervin, manages to change Harry’s life forever. I won’t tell you how—you will have to read the story yourself to find out! Mervin has special magic, but he uses the magic only when Harry gets into trouble, which he often does.
It’s an easy read and not too difficult. It moves at a fast pace (节奏) and lots of things happen on every page, so you won’t get bored reading it. You might get a bit tired of Harry, though, as he seems to never learn his lesson and keeps on making the same mistakes. I won’t spoil (透露) the ending for you, but if you enjoy a good mystery and a good laugh, you will completely enjoy this book.
First has written two other books called The Lonely Child and Whispering Mountain. But I think this book is his best. I highly recommend (推荐) The Mysterious Stranger to readers over the age of 8. I give it 9 out of 10.

If you have ever been caught in the rain without an umbrella, you should thank this new invention: Lampbrella. Because it can also help to keep off rain.
The Lampbrella has been designed for those of us who get caught in the heavy rain without umbrellas. When the canopy’s sensors (灯罩的传感器) sense rainfall, the umbrella spreads and if it is left unused for two minutes, it will close again.
The Lampbrella, with a height 1.96 meters from the ground, could comfortably hold 10 to 12 people.
Belyaev, 27, from St Petersburg, Russia, said, “Once I was driving on a street in St Petersburg and saw the street lamps lighting people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be good to have a canopy built into a street lamp. When it starts raining, the sensors send a signal to the electric drive, which opens the umbrella at a safe low speed. The umbrella then closes when it doesn’t ‘see’ any people under the canopy for 2 minutes.”
Many companies take an interest in his idea and he hopes to begin production work on the Lampbrella in the next few months. He added, “I’d like to see Lampbrella fixed all over the world—but safety is necessary and the first.” “I think it would be useful almost in every country, but especially in rainy England perhaps—I’d love to see it in London.”
“From the comments I have received, people really like it, I didn’t expect.”
27.What makes the Lampbrella special?
A.Playing music. B.Giving off light. C.Keeping off rain. D.Holding many people.
28.When will the umbrella of Lampbrella close according to Belyaev?
A.After it opens for several minutes. B.After the canopy’s sensors sense rainfall.
C.When there are too many people under it. D.When there’s no one under it for a short while.
29.Which word can best describe the designer Belyaev?
A.Humorous. B.Outgoing. C.Creative. D.Confident.
30.What can we know from the passage?
A.The designer was sure all people would like his invention.
B.Only companies have an interest in the designer’s invention
C.People can buy this new invention easily in many countries
D.The idea of Lampbrella came to the designer’s mind by accident.
