Chinese became an official language of the UN in 1946. More and more UN offices and staff members work with the Chinese language. April 20 marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day, people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Teens has invited three Chinese learners to share stories of their studies.
    Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a short beginners’ course in Chinese when I was in the UK. Since I came to China in 2021, I have been using an APP on my phone called Hello Chinese. I find reading the small stories on there really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters and then I’ll read them again with just the characters.
Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In a social setting, I’m a bit more confident to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese.
    David House. UK
    Chinese can make language simpler
When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese. Chinese can be emotive (有感染力的) and often give out information simpler than English. For example, a Chinese sign on campus might read, “疫情期间隔坐,人人有责”. But the English sign would read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part.” The English one is much longer and not as simple.
    Madeleine King. Australia
Learning is fun with tongue twisters
I’ve always been amazed by tongue twisters(绕口令)in Chinese. English has its own tongue twisters, for example: “Sally sells seashells by the sea coast”. But Chinese takes it a step forward with its use of four tones (声调).
As a native English speaker, I first learned Chinese through the use of pinyin. But as I found out, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tones can result in different Chinese words, like 马 vs 妈. But things get harder when this is used in tongue twisters!
Can you manage this one? Fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty; fourteen is not forty, forty is not fourteen.
    Patrick McCarthy. US
    21. What are the ways that David learn Chinese?
① He takes short courses in China.
② He reads small stories on an app.
③ He reads pinyin loudly every day.
④ He goes out for dinner with Chinese friends.
    A. ① ③ B. ② ④ C. ① ④ D. ② ③
    22. According to Madeleine, the difference between Chinese and English is that
    A. Chinese has more words than English.
    B. English can make people feel more emotions.
    C. Chinese signs are usually simpler and shorter.
    D. English is easier to speak and write than Chinese.
    23. Why does Patrick think tongue twisters in Chinese are harder?
    A. Chinese characters have four tones.
    B. English tongue twisters are usually shorter.
    C. Many Chinese words share the same meanings.
    D. Each Chinese character has a different meaning.
    24. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
    A. To show the influence of Chinese.
    B. To tell Chinese is an official language.
    C. To tell how to translate Chinese into English.
    D. To show the charm of Chinese tongue twisters.
    25. In which part of a magazine can you read this passage?
    A. Health and sports. B. Language and culture.
    C. History and population. D. Science and environment.
    B
was more tired than I could remember ever being. We rested, therefore, for many days before we even thought about the future. Then, when we were strong enough to travel again, I said to Ignosi, “You promised me diamonds if I helped you to become king.”
“I did.” he said. “I will keep my promise. But, only Gagool knows where to find them, and I must kill her and the other witches.”
“There has been enough killing,” I said. “Tell the old woman that if she will lead us to the diamonds, you will spare her life.”
Ignosi thought about this for a long time, and then he said, “I will speak to the woman and tell you what she says.”
Ignosi was as good as his word, and he persuaded Gagool to guide us to the diamonds. Three days later, Sir Henry, Captain Good, Foulata---the girl who owed her life to Captain Good and Infadoos were climbing the mountains called the Three Witches. Some warriors carried Gagool. She screamed and cursed continuously, but she knew where the diamonds were. And at last, we came to a deep hole in the ground. It had sloping sides and was not a natural hole. It was the work of miners.
Huge statues guarded the mine. I remembered that King Solomon worshipped some strange gods. “Could these be statues of those gods?” I asked Sir Henry who knew much about ancient history. “It is possible.” he said. The Phoenicians were great merchants and builders. They built King Solomon’s Temple. Perhaps they dug this mine for him. “We want to go into the mine,” I told Gagool, “It is the Place of Death,” she said, “but if you want to enter, then I will lead the way.”
    26. What did Ignosi promise me to do if I helped him to become king?
    A. To get statues of those gods. B. To become the captain.
    C. To kill the witches. D. To help me find the diamonds.
    27. Who did the underlined words “the old woman” refer to in Paragraph 3?
    A. Gagool. B. Foulata. C. Ignosi. D. Infadoos.
    28. What do you think of Ignosi?
    A. He was proud. B. He loved money so much.
    C. He only thought of himself D. He was honest.
29.What is the right order of what happened in the story?
①Gagool led them to the Place of Death.
②Ignosi persuaded Gagool to guide them to the diamonds.
③The Phoenicians built the King Solomon’s Temple.
④They lost a lot of blood.
    A. ④②①③ B. ③④①② C. ③④②① D. ④①②③
    30. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The Phoenicians were great builders. B. Ignosi hated witches.
    C. Ignosi wanted to become king. D. Gagool wouldn’t lead them to the diamonds.

On the fourth day I found a campfire. It was still smoking. Somebody else was living on my island! Who was it? I felt surprised so I took my gun and climbed a tree. I watched for a long time but I didn’t feel safe any more. The next day I went exploring. I kept my gun with me all the time. After a while I saw a fire through the trees. I went up to it very slowly and very quietly. A man was lying on the ground near the fire. He was asleep but there was a blanket over his head so I couldn’t see his face. I hid behind a bush and watched him carefully. I had to wait for a long time and it was starting to get dark when the man finally woke up. He stood up and took off the blanket.
It was Jim, Miss Watson’s slave! I jumped out and ran up to him.
“Jim!” I said. “It’s me, Huck!”
He fell on his knees. There was a look of fear on his face. “It’s Huck’s ghost! Please don’t hurt me, ghost! “
“Jim! I’m not dead. It was a trick.” Jim put his hand on my arm and hold it hard.
    “Ouch!” I shouted.
“Huck! Is it really you?” Jim said, with a big smile. Yes, Jim, and I’m really happy to see you. But what are you doing here?”
He stopped smiling and looked at the ground. “If I tell you, will you promise not to take me to the judge?”
“I promise, Jim. I’m not planning to go back to St. Petersburg! Tell me your story!”
“Well, alright then. The other day a businessman from New Orleans came to the house, I knew that Miss Wastson wanted to sell me so I was scared. I didn’t want to go to New Orleans. Anyway that evening I listened at the door while Miss Waston and the widow were talking. Miss Watson said the businessman was offering $800 for me. The widow was shocked but Miss Waston said that $ 800 was a lot of money and she couldn’t refuse. I didn’t wait to hear any more. I ran away as fast as I could. Now I’m hiding here because some men are looking for me. They want the $200 reward for catching a runaway slave.
“How did you get to the island?”
    “I swam across the river.”
We sat there chatting for a long time. I liked talking to Jim because he knew a lot of things. He understood signs. He knew which ones meant good luck and which ones meant bad luck. He knew which sign meant bad weather, too. When he saw some birds flying low in the sky he said, “It’s going to rain later, Huck. We must find a dry place to make a camp.”
The next day we climbed to the top of the a big hill in the middle of the island and fund a cave in the rock. “This is a good place,” Jim said.
