Painting Master Class examines 100 of the most fascinating paintings by the world’s greatest artists, exploring the way they were made, and how and what we can learn from them with detailed analyses. Below are the four masterpieces students prefer.
The Empire of Light is a series of paintings by Belgian artist René Magritte. Between 1953 and 1954, he painted the same scene 27 times. It shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds.
Racing Horse is a painting by Xu Beihong. In 1941 he painted a racing horse running at a high speed like a missile across the sky. The horse in the masterpiece is painted with a typical Western perspective but very traditional Chinese ink brushwork. Xu cleverly drew in black ink to show the moving hair on the horse’s mane and tail.
The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 when Vincent van Gogh was staying at a home for the mental illness. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window — the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. Influenced by Impressionism, he also painted the massive circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. Beneath this amazing sky, we see a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree. His unusual use of colour has led experts to think that Van Gogh’s mental illness may have affected his sense of sight.
The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. What makes it striking is that it shows a thin figure with an expression of fear — the figure’s mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream. This figure is set on a bridge above a dark, stormy sea, and against an orange-red sky. Many experts say that The Scream is connected to Munch’s mental health problems, which caused him a lot of pain.
1.Which of the following was painted latest?
A.The Scream. B.The Starry Night. C.Racing Horse. D.The Empire of Light.
2.Whose painting combines Western and Chinese painting style?
    A.Edvard Munch’s. B.Vincent van Gogh’s. C.Xu Beihong’s. D.René Magritte’s.
3.What kind of painting is The Starry Night?
A.An ink painting of stars. B.A series of paintings about the night sky.
C.A painting inspired by Impressionism. D.A figure painting of Vincent van Gogh.

A song called Lonely Warrior (《孤勇者》) is always ringing in my ears. Six years ago, after hosting an annual ceremony for my school, I found that my left leg was a little swollen, and very soon I could barely walk. In fact, the swollen part became a fist-sized meatball that was so painful that I could barely sleep. Of course, I went to a local hospital, where I was given very bleak (不乐观的) news-osteosarcoma, which means bone cancer.
I underwent chemotherapy (化疗) for the next two years, and it was the worst time of my life. Physically, I felt that the side effects of chemotherapy were killing me. I lost all of the hair on my body and I became totally bald. I could barely eat anything, even if felt hungry. I no longer needed an alarm clock to wake up in the morning. Instead, what woke me was my body telling me that I needed to vomit (呕吐).
I had no idea where all this treatment would leave me, and the dreams I had once nursed about the future were entirely wiped out. I wanted to feel the world and experience more, so I stuck to the course of treatment. As time went by, however, I became weaker and weaker. The side effects now were far worse than they had been earlier.
I eventually suggested that the leg be chopped off, and the doctor said that might be the best thing to do, as long as I could cope with the psychological and social pressures afterward. I made my decision very calmly, because I knew things could not be worse than they were at that moment, and I was determined that this was just one more battle I would win.
Now, six years later, I have weathered all these difficulties. I have been so lucky to be able to find the strength to deal with all of this, and what I have to tell anyone still struggling with difficulties is this: have faith in yourself, and do not let bad moments drag you down. Just hang on and you will come through.
4.What can we learn about the side effects of chemotherapy?
A.They made the author suffer a lot.
    B.They destroyed the author’s faith.
    C.They were relieved after treatment.
D.They were more obvious in the daytime
5.What was the author’s decision to deal with his condition?
    A.Chopping off his leg.
    B.Turning down the doctor’s advice.
    C.Giving in to the cancer.
    D.Seeking psychological assistance.
6.What does the underlined word“weathered”in the last paragraph mean?
    A.resisted B.survived C.escaped D.produced
7.What does the author want to convey in the text?
    A.A light heart lives long.
    B.A good medicine tastes bitter.
    C.Time works wonders.
D.One with faith braves any hardship.

Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), created by OpenAI, an AI and research company, is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with a chatbot. The language model can answer questions, and assist you with tasks such as composing emails, essays, and code.
ChatGPT is powered by a large language model, or LLM, meaning it’s programmed to understand human language and generate responses based on a large amount of data. What makes ChatGPT so impressive is its ability to log context from users’ earlier messages in a thread and use it to form responses later in the conversation.
According to analysis by Swiss bank UBS, ChatGPT is the fastest growing app of all time. In January, only two months after its launch, UBS analysis estimates that ChatGPT had 100 million active users. For comparison, it took nine months for TikTok to reach 100 million.
Despite looking very impressive, ChatGPT still has limitations. Instead of asking for clarification on ambiguous (模棱两可的) questions, the model just takes a guess at what your question means. “The primary problem is that the answers that ChatGPT produces have a high rate of being incorrect,” says Stack Overflow moderators in a post. Critics argue that these tools are just very good at putting words into an order that makes sense from a statistical point of view, but they cannot understand the meaning or know whether the statements it makes are correct. Another major limitation is that ChatGPT’s data is limited to 2021.
ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot that has the potential to make people’s lives easier and to assist with everyday tiring tasks, such as writing an email or having to navigate the web for answers. However, there are certain technical details that have to be figured out before it’s widely used, to prevent negative outcomes such as the spread of misinformation. In general, this AI model relies on lots of training and fine-tuning to reach a level of ideal performance.
8.What can we learn about ChatGPT from the first paragraph?
A.What its potential market is. B.It is developed jointly by two companies.
C.Why it enjoys great popularity. D.It is a conversational AI tool.
9.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A.Context. B.ChatGPT’s ability. C.A thread. D.LLM.
10.What is a limitation of ChatGPT?
    A.Low efficiency. B.Disordered words. C.Poor accuracy. D.Frequent crashes.
11.What is the author’s attitude to ChatGPT?
    A.Unclear. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Satisfied.

Have you ever wished you could snuggle down under your blankets and stay there for the whole winter? Well, it turns out that humans may be able to hibernate (冬眠) like bears and other animals after all — and it could be good for us.
Hibernation is when animals go into a cave, tree hollow, or other cozy location and turn down some of the functions in their body. This helps them save energy when it's cold and there isn't much food to be found. When an animal is hibernating, its heart becomes less active and its body temperature drops. Grizzly and black bears don't eat, drink, or go to the bathroom when they're hibernating, while animals like bats and hedgehogs sometimes wake up to find food or move to another spot.
Although humans don't hibernate, scientists think we might have the ability to. Sandy Martin of the University of Colorado, says it is likely that the common ancestor of all mammals, including humans, was a hibernator. This means our bodies could still have the tools to allow us to hibernate.
One of those tools could be a natural chemical in our bodies called adenosine (腺苷), which sends messages to the brain to make mammals feel sleepy. Domenico Tupone from Oregon Health and Science University discovered that after boosting adenosine in rats' brains, their core body temperature fell — just like it falls in a hibernating animal. As Tupone pointed out, “Rats are similar to humans in terms of the internal circuitry(回路)of the brain. What we suspect is that this circuit is also present in humans, but we have lost the ability to trigger it.”
Researchers are trying to determine how to harness (利用) the power of hibernation to help humans. It's possible that hibernating could protect people from conditions such as heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and strokes. Doctors already deliberately lower people's body temperature to treat heart attacks. Hibernation could also help us lengthen life. A recent study of bats and marmots shows that when they hibernate, they age more slowly. Hibernation might even help astronauts travel further into space because they wouldn't need so much food on very long journeys.
12.What are animals like when they enter hibernation?
A.Their heartbeat slows down. B.Their bodies function as normal.
C.Their body temperature rises. D.Their breathing rate speeds up.
13.What can be learned about adenosine?
A.It stimulates the rat’s growth. B.It helps mammals sleep.
C.It damages the circuitry of the brain. D.It increases after a man gets sleepy.
14.In which aspect may humans benefit from hibernation?
    A.Living a longer life. B.Predicting heart disease.
    C.Improving mental health. D.Getting high-quality sleep.
15.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Humans Were Hibernators Too B.Adenosine: Secret of Hibernation
C.Hibernation: Solution to Human Diseases D.Hibernating Could Be Good for Humans Too

故填the。
故填was put。
到……”,故填from。
be able to do是固定短语,意为“能够做某事”,因此空格处是不定式to travel,故填to travel。
six freight (货运) and passenger stations, eleven passenger stations和five stations for technical use是并列关系,句子是肯定句,因此空格处用and表并列,故填and。

由“Life is not easy for everyone”和“we need to have a positive attitude towards them”可知,前后两句是并列关系,用and连接,也可理解为两句话是因果关系,用so连接,故将or改为and/so。

contribute to是固定短语,意为“有助于”,故将for改为to。
由it is和句意可知,句子是强调句,结构是“It is/was+被强调的部分+who/that+其他部分”,因此because是多余的,故去掉because。
live a...life意为“过着……的生活”,故在meaningful前加a。
    52.Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you want to join the Kite Festival with me! The school has provided two kinds of kites for us to choose from. Here’s a comparison:
Kite A, made of paper, looks beautiful with the shape of a delicate swallow. It costs 70 yuan and is affordable for us. While Kite B, which is made of cloth, is priced at 150 yuan and is more expensive. But its unique dragon-shaped design makes it stand out among other kites.
Personally, I’d choose Kite B because of its striking appearance and the great kite-flying experience it offers. Can’t wait to fly our kites together.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

[高分句型2] While Kite B, which is made of cloth, is priced at 150 yuan and is more expensive.
