The new and publicly-available ChatGPT is a type of AI that has been “trained” by looking at over 8 million web pages. When asked a question, ChatGPT uses this training to produce detailed answers that often seem like they were written by a human. You can ask it anything and it will give you answers to not only follow-up questions but also professional questions (although it does sometimes make mistakes). You can also ask it to write text, such as short stories or essays. The technology is so promising (有前途的) that some people believe it will overtake (超过) Google in the near future.
For many years it has been expected that AI will become an important part of our lives, and for just as long there have been concerns (忧虑) of the trouble that AI could cause. In the 20th century, scientists, philosophers and writers sometimes worried that AI would become too powerful. In the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, a giant supercomputer has killed every human on earth except five people it keeps to torture (折磨). And in the 1984 film The Terminator, a powerful AI called Skynet uses time travel to send a robot into the past to try and kill the mother of a brave and strong fighter. On the other hand, some people were optimistic of advanced technologies’ potential (潜力) to build a better world. In the 1960s TV show Lost in Space, a family of humans were helped by a friendly robot named Robby.
Nowadays, there is less concern of an all-powerful AI trying to destroy the world, and we are not expecting friendly robots just yet. That doesn’t mean there is not a lot of excitement and concern being felt towards new technologies like AI, though. ChatGPT is a great example of a modern technology that is causing mixed feelings.
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if ChatGPT does become bigger and more popular, its effects are mostly positive. So, what do you think? Will ChatGPT be good, bad, or somewhere in between for humankind?
( )26. Why can ChatGPT produce detailed answers like they are from a human?
A. Scientists teach ChatGPT to talk like a human. B. ChatGPT has looked at over 8 million web pages.
C. ChatGPT depends on Google’s basic information. D. Many people answer the question on the Internet.
( )27. Which has a positive attitude towards AI?
A. Lost in Space B. The Terminator
C. Skynet D. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
( )28. What opinion does the writer agree with?
A. People are always crazy about new technologies. B. People become more worried about Al at present.
C. ChatGPT is a perfect Al technology with no doubt. D. ChatGPT brings people a mixture of joy and worries.

Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol (汽油) and electricity. The have a small standard petrol engine (引擎) and a battery electric motor to provide electric power.
There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic lights, keeping only the electric engine running.
Traditional cars have large engines to cope with driving uphill. Most of the time, the high engine capacity is not needed, but the engine continues burning up fuel (燃料). Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less energy. Hybrid cars are also lighter and aerodynamically (空气动力学地) designed for greater fuel efficiency.
Another way that fuel consumption is cut by a system of “regenerative braking (刹车). The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than traditional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In traditional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.
Car makers and engineers have been experiencing with electric and hybrid cars since the late 19th century. In 1898 Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first mass-produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999, when the Honda Insight went on sale.
As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also many voices in some places to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don’t have to pay on certain roads. In some cities around the world, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.
( )29. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Hybrid cars don’t need petrol any more.
B. The petrol engine and the electric motor work all the way.
C. Hybrid cars mainly depend on electrical power to run.
D. Some hybrid car petrol engines will stop when unnecessary.
( )30. Which is NOT the reason why hybrid cars use less energy?
A. Smaller petrol engines. B. Scientific design.
C. Traditional brakes. D. Energy storage.
( )31. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To advertise hybrid cars to encourage people to buy.
B. To show people a kind of energy-saving cars.
C. To compare traditional cars and hybrid cars.
D. To introduce the development of hybrid cars.

Then he asked, “I have tied three knots in this rope. Is it the same rope I had before?” One of the students replied, “It’s not easy to answer. The rope seems to have changed from the outside. It has three knots which were not there before. But from the inside it is still the same rope as it was before.”
“Yes, you are right!” the teacher said. “Now, I will untie (解开) these knots.” Then he began to pull both ends of the rope away from each other. Seeing that, the student said, “You are not untying them. You are making them tighter (更紧的).” So the teacher stopped and asked, “What can I do to untie there knots?” Some students replied, “You have to look at them closely so that you will know how they are tied. Then you can try to untie them.”

From Shy Girl to Pop Star
For this month’s Young World magazine, I interviewed 19-year-old Asian pop star Candy Wang. Candy told me that she used to be really shy and took up singing to deal with her shyness. As she got better, she dared to sing in front of her class, and then for the whole school. Now she’s not shy anymore and loves singing in front of crowds.
I asked Candy how life was different after she became famous. She explained that there are many good things, like being able to travel and meet new people all the time. “I didn’t use to be popular in school, but now I get tons of attention everywhere I go.” However, too much attention can also be a bad thing. “I always have to worry about how I appear to others and I have to be very careful about what I say or do. And I don’t have much private time anymore. Hanging out with friends is almost impossible for me now because there are always guards around me.”
What does Candy have to say to all those young people who want to become famous? — “Well,” she begins slowly, “you have to be prepared to give up your normal life. You can never imagine how difficult the road to success is. Many times I thought about giving up, but I fought on. You really require a lot of talent and hard work to succeed. Only a very small number of people make it to the top.”

A group of boys stood around a tree. “What a tall tree!” they said to each other, “It would be dangerous to climb to the top!” The group of boys then decided to play a game to see who could climb to the top of the tree first. Their mothers were sitting not far away, looking on at their children as they played.
One of the climbers was an 8-year-old boy named David. He was the shortest child in the group. Nobody thought he would win. Then the game started. All of the boys tried their best to climb as high as they could. Although the other boys climbed faster than David in the beginning, he got to the top of the tree fastest in the end.
His mother was proud. She asked him, “David, how did you reach the top of the tree so quickly?” “It was easy,” David said, “The other children kept looking down as they climbed. When they realized how high they were, they were afraid of falling down. I, however, looked only up. When I saw how close I was, I kept going higher and higher, until I reached the top.”
It is true in life that if we just keep going forward without looking back, we are more likely to reach our goals.

九、书面表达(满分15分)
One possible version:
It’s reported that labor education has been included in the education of middle schools and primary schools in China. I think it’s necessary. Because it is good for our health. We can relax from the hard study by doing labor.
I usually do labor at home such as doing the dishes, sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. At school I often clean the classroom and water flowers. I can not only keep healthy, but also develop good habits from it.
As for how to run the course in our school. I have some ideas. The school can offer different kinds of labor classes to teach us how to do the cleaning and grow plants. What’s more, the school can also hold competitions about the labor skills to see who is the best. Such activities make our school life more colorful and meaningful.
I am looking forward to taking every labor course. I believe I will do well in it.
