Weald & Downland Living Museum
Fun fact
Over 50 historic buildings from across the Weald and Downland area have been dismantled (拆除) and then reconstructed across a lovely 40-acre site in the South Downs national park. The collection of buildings represents almost a thousand years of rural life in south-east England: furnished just as they would have been in the past — complete with the homes, farms and public buildings. There’s a sense of exploring a real village as you wander between them along green paths, stopping to climb the stairs of a 17th-century craftsman’s (工匠) cottage to lie on the straw bed or sheltering from a shower in a smoky, 14th-century hall.
Getting there
The Stagecoach 60 bus service from Chichester to Midhurst stops just five minutes away at Grooms Yard, Singleton. The nearest railway stations are Chichester (2 miles) and Haslemere (7 miles). The museum is on Town Lane in Singleton, reached via the A286 from Chichester to Midhurst. Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.
Value for money?
Yes. It’s not cheap but it’s a special experience that easily fills a day. Plus, it’s a valuable cause worth supporting. Adults £14, children 5-17 and students £6.50, under-4s free, family £38 (two adults and two children) or £25 (one adult and three children).
Opening hours
Daily 10am-5pm (last entry 4pm).
21.What can visitors do in Weald & Downland Living Museum?
A.Take a shower in the hall.
B.Stay overnight at a cottage.
C.Learn construction techniques.
D.Explore rural life centuries ago.22.How much would a couple with their 5-year-old twin sons pay for admission?
A.£25. B.£34.5. C.£38. D.£41.23.What do we know about Weald & Downland Living Museum?

An American teacher who helped make college education accessible to low-income, immigrant, first-generation American, and refugee (难民) pupils has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Keishia Thorpe, an English teacher in Maryland, was selected from more than 8,000 teachers in 121 countries.
Ms. Thorpe teaches English to 12th-graders at the International High School Langley Park, where 95 percent of pupils are from low-income families. She redesigned their courses for the English department to make it culturally relevant to her pupils who are from mostly Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and South America. Since then, her English language learners have shown a 40 percent increase in their reading.
Ms. Thorpe spent a lot of time encouraging her pupils to apply for college and helped them with their applications and accessing fully-funded scholarships. She helped her senior pupils in 2018–2019 win more than $6.7 million in scholarships to 11 colleges, with most of them not having to pay for their education.
She plans to use the prize money to give less well-off pupils an opportunity of receiving a third level education. “Every person deserves the right to education and I want to be that person who champions that for them. I plan to use the money to help students worldwide access higher education,” she said. “Students are the reason I’m here, so I plan to use that to promote them and create a better future for them.”
Organized by UNESCO and first awarded in 2015, the Global Teacher Prize is an annual award to a teacher who has made a vast difference to the profession. The winner of this year was announced at a virtual ceremony in Paris on November 10th, 2021.
24.How do Thorpe’s redesigned courses influence her students?
A.Students have spent more time reading.
B.Students are more aware of their culture.
C.More low-income students attend school.
D.More students apply for college education.25.What can be learned about the Global Teacher Prize?
A.It devotes much to college education.
B.It favors low-income immigrant teachers.
C.It targets teachers with huge contributions.
D.It encourages reforms in English teaching.26.Which of the following words best describes Thorpe?
A.Selfless and strict. B.Caring and devoted.

Two hundred years ago, the clock began to control the world of work. Paid on the basis of how many hours they worked, people rushed to and from work.
The clock’s power may at last be weakening. Flexible working existed well before the pandemic?(疫情). Now remote working has brought a greater degree of freedom. A survey of 4,700 home-workers across six countries conducted by Slack, a corporate-messaging firm, found that flexible working was viewed very positively, improving both people’s worksite balance and productivity. Flexible workers even scored more highly on a sense of belonging to their organization than those on a nine-to-five schedule.
It is hardly surprising that workers prefer flexibility. Working an eight-hour schedule is restricting. Those are also the hours when most shops are open, and when doctors will take appointments. Parents on a conventional routine may be able to take their children to school in the morning but are unlikely to be able to pick them up in the afternoon.
It is also not astonishing that home-workers feel they are more productive. After all, few people can concentrate for eight hours on end. There are points in the day where people feel like staring out of the window or going for a walk; these may be moments when they find inspiration or recharge themselves for the next task. When they do this in an office, they risk the boss’s disapproval; at home, they can work when they are most motivated.
What is striking about Slack’s study is the widespread support for home-working. Overall Just 12% of the workers surveyed wanted to return to a normal office schedule. In America black, Asian and Hispanic employees were even more enthusiastic than their white colleagues. Women with children were generally happy about it, reporting an improvement in their work-life balance.
Of course, the new schedule carries dangers: people may lose all separation between work and home life. To maintain some human contact, companies may adopt a mixed model in which workers go into the office for part of the week. But overall office-workers’ freedom is to be welcomed. The clock was a crud master and many people will be happy to escape its control.
28.What is the benefit of remote working according to the text?
A.Workers can spare more time to work.
B.Workers can balance work and life well.
C.Workers can earn more money by working at home.
D.Workers can take more jobs to increase their income.29.Which proverb can be quoted to support Para 4?
A.there is a will, there is away.
B.God helps those who help themselves.
C.All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.
D.Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.30.Which is impressive about Slack’s study on flexible working?
A.Workers’ preference for office-working.
B.Workers’ widespread favor of flexible working.
C.Workers’ great worry about flexible working.
D.Workers’ productivity increased by home-working.31.What advice is given to companies interested in taking the new schedule?
A.To fix a time for their employees to work in the office.
B.To give their employees as much freedom as they need.
C.To require their employees to separate work from home life.
D.To praise their employees for being punctual for their work.
For breeding (繁殖) birds, timing is everything. Most species have just a narrow window to get the food they need to feed chicks. Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.
On average, the beginnings and ends of the breeding periods are occurring earlier in the year. However, the ends are shifting back faster than the beginnings, resulting in an average breeding window that is 1.7 days shorter in 2017 than it was in 1975. During that same period, Finland’s average temperature rose by 0.8℃, suggesting many bird species are actively responding to changing temperatures, Hällfors, who led the team, says.
“It’s good for the species if it’s able to follow the optimum conditions as the climate changes,” she says. However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season—a risky time for chicks’ survival, especially if the weather turns suddenly cold. In addition, because many late-season species are shifting their breeding windows up, that could mean more competition for food and nesting sites early on, leaving some chicks to go hungry.
Lucyna Halupka, an ecologist at the University of Wroclaw, calls the study “a very important paper” because it’s one of the few ways to measure the breeding period duration. For 2 decades, she says, many scientists studying birds and climate change have looked only at the earliest, median (中间的), or mean laying dates for specific groups of birds. However, she reminds that because the study is limited to Finland, the findings may not apply universally; future studies should examine how breeding seasons move in other regions where the effect of climate change is different. They should also try to determine how shifting breeding windows affect population sizes, she says.
32.What did the scientists find?
A.The weather in Finland becomes warmer.
B.It is becoming more difficult for birds to breed.
C.The birds in Finland spend fewer days breeding.
D.There isn’t enough food for some chicks in Finland.33.What does the underlined word “optimum” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Exact. B.Proper. C.Changeable. D.Dangerous.34.What is the significance of the study according to Lucyna?
A.It is carried out in a different way.
B.It is helpful for people to protect the birds.
C.It opens a window for people to learn about these birds.
D.It demonstrates the living situation of the birds on earth.35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Revealed the Secrets of Birds’ Breeding
B.Scientists Take Steps to Protect the Birds in the Wild
C.Birds Play a Role in Fighting Against Global Warming
D.Birds’ Breeding Windows Are Affected by Global Warming
Conscious (有意识的) living is not just a trend. 36 It is about being intentional with everything you do — your words, actions, beliefs, habits, and choices. Accepting conscious living takes some effort, but it is worthwhile. Here are some ways you can achieve this goal.
●Be conscious about your time.
Time is the most precious thing because there is no way to live a moment again. 37 If you waste your precious hours doing negative things, you will regret it later. The first step for living consciously is to be wise about your time. Be selective about things you spend it on, and allocate (分配) it for positive activities.
● 38
You cannot achieve them unless you understand your needs and intentions. It is easier said than done because most people fail to make an effort to know themselves. Spend time thinking over and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know yourself better, you can create a plan to work towards becoming more patient, honest, and forgiving.
●Learn to be grateful.
Gratitude takes you a long way towards conscious living. It opens you up to a happier and a fulfilled mindset. Most people are unhappy because they see only the negatives in life. However, everyone has something to be grateful for. Writing a gratitude journal is a good start for counting your blessings. 39
●Believe in yourself.
It is the key to making the right choices, yet not regretting the wrong ones. 40 Spending time alone and thinking deeply are effective measures that enable you to identify the inner voice. Care for it and follow it to make it stronger down the line.
Conscious living is a skill you need to learn as you go, so be willing to make the effort and master it. You will absorb it soon and be a happier person in the long run.
A.Know yourself better.
B.Accept the person you are.
C.Life can be a lot better with the right decisions.
D.It is a healthy choice that enables you to be happy.
E.Pick it as a daily habit, and you will notice the difference.
F.The way you spend your time determines the course of your life.
G.The best way to build self-belief is by reflecting on your own thoughts.

I had stopped at the Swindon services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.
“Which way are you heading?” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”
“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish (爱尔兰) tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I’ve had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”
“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”
I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers. I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.
As we headed east along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies (悲剧) that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.
Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).
“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”
It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who’d clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.

4.B

W: Just wake up at 7:00. You’ll have plenty of time then.
5.A
W: I wanted to buy a new pair of shoes from Foot Locker, but the ones I want cost $100. I can only spend $75 at the most.

M: Fine then, but don’t miss the dentist because of that game.

M: Yes, I can relate to that.
W: Well, that’s more like how it is to work at Trader Joe’s. The employees are the children ... and I’m the mother.

M: I started when I was a kid about 12. We stayed with the circus for about 10 years. Shortly after we moved the show to Normandy, my older sister broke her leg. Then my parents decided maybe it was time for us to retire. My sister got hurt when she was about 23. I was a year younger at the time and didn’t want to leave.
W: That’s too bad she got hurt. Do you still do performances?
M: I consult these days. I actually have to travel to India next week to look at the safety equipment of a circus. It will be the first time returning there after my sister got hurt. She lives there managing a hotel.

W: Hi. I can’t stop for long. I still have a mile to run.

M: I suppose you’ re right. I see a lot of very heavy people these days.
W: They are harming themselves by eating the wrong things and not doing exercise.
M: So how much running do you do? Wouldn’t it be better going to a gym?
W: Gyms cost money. I can run for free. Two miles a day, three times a week -it’s an easy routine.
M: It doesn’t sound easy to me. I suppose I should do some exercise and get enough sleep as well. I seldom get my full eight hours.
W: You really should.
M: On the plus side, I’m a healthy eater. I eat plenty of vegetables and just a little meat.
W: At least you are making an effort. With a few small changes, you could have a healthy lifestyle.
M: You’ re right. I can’t do much about my bed times, but from tomorrow I am going to travel to work on my bike.
W: Swimming is good exercise as well.
M: Maybe I’ll check out the local pool sometime.

Too often the modern trend is for people to be separated from each other. Cars have taken us off the streets, where we used to stop to chat. Television has planted us firmly in our living rooms, instead of going out with other people. We must strike back against the selfishness and greed of our modern world and help our fellow human beings. Helping someone has many advantages. It makes you feel better about yourself, improves someone’s life and makes the world a better place. Don’t know where to start? Well, just smile and be friendly. Sometimes a simple little thing like this can put a smile and a warm feeling in someone else’s heart. Call a charity to volunteer. The next time you see someone pulled over with a flat tire or in need of help, stop and ask how you can help. Take the time to teach someone a skill you know. Comfort someone in grief. Often someone who is sad or frustrated just needs someone who will listen. Be patient. Sometimes people can have difficulty understanding things or learning to do something right. Find ways to express your love to others, whether they are your partner, child, friends, co-workers, or a complete stranger.

根据最后一段中“Organized by UNESCO and first awarded in 2015, the Global Teacher Prize is an annual award to a teacher who has made a vast difference to the profession.(全球教师奖由联合国教科文组织组织,于2015年首次颁发,每年颁发给为该专业做出巨大贡献的教师)”可知,全球教师奖针对有巨大贡献的教师。故选C项。
Thorpe spent a lot of time encouraging her pupils to apply for college and helped them with their applications and accessing fully-funded scholarships. She helped her senior pupils in 2018–2019 win more than $6.7 million in scholarships to 11 colleges, with most of them not having to pay for their education.( Thorpe女士花了很多时间鼓励她的学生申请大学,帮助他们申请并获得全额奖学金。她在2018-2019年帮助她的高年级学生赢得了11所大学超过670万美元的奖学金,其中大多数学生无需支付学费)”以及倒数第二段“She plans to use the prize money to give less well-off pupils an opportunity of receiving a third level education. “Every person deserves the right to education and I want to be that person who champions that for them. I plan to use the money to help students worldwide access higher education,” she said. “Students are the reason I’m here, so I plan to use that to promote them and create a better future for them.”(她计划用这笔奖金给不太富裕的学生一个接受第三层次教育的机会。“每个人都有受教育的权利,我想成为那个为他们捍卫这一权利的人。我计划用这笔钱来帮助世界各地的学生接受高等教育。学生是我来到这里的原因,所以我打算用这一点来宣传他们,为他们创造更美好的未来。”)”可推知,Thorpe关心他人且乐于奉献。故选B项。
27.主旨大意题。根据第一段“An American teacher who helped make college education accessible to low-income, immigrant, first-generation American, and refugee pupils has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Keishia Thorpe, an English teacher in Maryland, was selected from more than 8,000 teacher in 121 countries.(一名帮助低收入、移民、第一代美国人和难民学生获得大学教育的美国教师赢得了100万美元的全球教师奖。

根据文章第二段中的“Now remote working has brought a greater degree of freedom. A survey of 4.700 home-workers across six countries conducted by Slack, a corporate-messaging firm, found that flexible working was viewed very positively, improving both people’s worksite balance and productivity.(现在远程工作带来了更大程度的自由。企业信息服务公司Slack对六个国家的4700名在家办公的员工进行了一项调查。调查发现,弹性工作制受到了非常积极的看待,它能改善办公场所的平衡,提高工作效率。)”可知,在家远程办公可以改善办公场所的平衡,即平衡工作和生活,提高工作效率。故选B项。
29.推理判断题。根据文章第四段内容“It is also not astonishing that home-workers feel they are more productive. After all, few people can concentrate for eight hours on end. There are points in the day where people feel like staring out of the window or going for a walk; these may be moments when they find inspiration or recharge themselves for the next task. When they do this in an office, they risk the boss’s disapproval; at home, they can work when they are most motivated.(在家工作的人觉得自己效率更高,这也不足为奇。 C项“All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.(只工作不玩耍,聪明孩子也变傻。)”
根据文章倒数第二段中的“What is striking about Slack’s study is the widespread support for home-working.(Slack的研究引人注目的地方在于,人们普遍支持在家办公。)”
根据文章最后一段中的“Of course, the new schedule carries dangers: people may lose all separation between work and home life. To maintain some human contact, companies may adopt a mixed model in which workers go into the office for part of the week.(当然,新的工作时间表也有危险:人们可能会失去工作和家庭生活之间的所有分隔。为了保持一些人际联系,公司可能会采取一种混合模式,即员工每周有一部分时间去办公室。)”可知,为了解决新工作时间表打来的问题,公司可以采用混合模式,即每周抽一部分时间到办公室办公。故选A项。

根据第一段最后一句“Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.(现在,在分析了从1975年到2017年的数据后,一个科学团队认为,随着气候变暖,鸟类不仅繁殖得更早,而且它们的繁殖窗口也变窄了——有些缩短了4到5天。)”以及第三段中“ However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season”(然而,较短的繁殖期意味着更多的鸟在季节提前繁殖)描述可知,这些科学家发现受气候变暖的影响,一些鸟类的繁殖期缩短了。故选C项。
根据第二段“During that same period, Finland’s average temperature rose by 0.8℃, suggesting many bird species are actively responding to changing temperatures, Hällfors, who led the team, says.(在同一时期,芬兰的平均气温上升了0.8℃,这表明许多鸟类正在积极应对温度的变化,Hällfors领导了该团队。)”这里提到了气温上升这一温度变化,这是一个不错的繁殖条件,以及“‘It’s good for the species if it’s able to follow the optimum conditions as the climate changes,’ she says. However, the shorter breeding windows mean more birds are breeding earlier in the season—a risky time for chicks’ survival, especially if the weather turns suddenly cold.(如果它能够随着气候变化而适应optimum条件,这对物种来说是好事。”
根据第四段首句中“because it’s one of the few ways to measure the breeding period duration(因为这是为数不多的衡量繁殖周期的方法之一)”可知,Lucyna Halupka把这项研究认为是“非常重要的一页”是因为这个小组是以不同的方式进行了这项研究。 故选A项。
根据第一段“Now, after analyzing data that span from 1975 to 2017, a science team suggests that as the climate warms, birds are not only breeding earlier, but their breeding windows are also narrowed—some by as many as 4 to 5 days.(现在,在分析了从1975年到2017年的数据后,一个科学团队认为,随着气候变暖,鸟类不仅繁殖得更早,而且它们的繁殖窗口也变窄了——有些缩短了4到5天。)”

67.One possible version:
As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off, I had an idea. “Why don’t I just drop you at the airport now?” I said. “I’ll buy you a ticket and you can fly home.” “That’s so kind of you,” he replied. Then, after a pause, “and please don’t worry. I’ll definitely wire you the money when I get home.” I pulled onto the airport avenue and soon dropped him off outside the terminal building. I went to a cash point, got out 10 shiny new 20 notes and handed them over. He took the money and thanked me again and again.
Before he left to buy his air ticket, he gave me a huge hug. He took my phone number and said he’d call as soon as he could to arrange the transfer. I bid farewell to him without any real idea whether I’d ever see the man or the money again. As I drove the final miles to my own house in London, I felt happier thinking about Brendan. He asked for help, for a lift to get home, and in good faith I gave them to him. That’s got to be a good thing.
