Farmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbors. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well.
Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought.
Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter(木匠) standing at the doorway.
“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said.
“I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!”

Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all!

Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other,” said Farmer Bob.
Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you,” said Farmer John. “I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.”

Scientists have not found any signs of life on Mars yet,but they say a robotic vehicle called “Curiosity” is helping them learn a lot about the planet’s history and climate.
Curiosity landed on Mars in August 2012 after travelling through space for more than eight months. It was sent to Mars by scientists from NASA in the United States.
Curiosity is about the size of a car and has six wheels. It also has a robotic arm, cameras, and instruments that allow it to examine things it finds on the surface. Then it sends the information back to the earth.
Curiosity’s main task is to find out if anything could live on Mars, either now or in the past.On Nov.2,NASA scientists held a press conference (新闻发布会) to discuss what Curiosity had found in its first two months on Mars.
Curiosity has found soil that is similar to the sand formed by volcanoes (火山) on the earth.Scientists say that studying the minerals in Martian soil will help them understand what conditions were like on the planet in the past.Curiosity also found smooth stones like the ones found on river beds and seashores on the earth, where their rough edges have been worn down by water.Mars is very cold and dry now,but scientists say the smooth stones tell them that a river used to run through the place where they were found.
Curiosity has been testing the atmosphere around Mars for a type of gas called methane (甲烷),but so far it has not found any.On the earth, most methane is produced by plants or animals.Methane on Mars might indicate that some type of tiny plants or animals lived there.
Curiosity is the fourth robotic vehicle to be sent to Mars.It will continue to explore the planet for about two years.

48.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refers to “ ”.
    A.smooth stones B.rivers
    C.robotic vehicles D.volcanoes
49.We know from the sixth paragraph that .
A.some tiny animals once lived on Mars
B.there are no plants or animals on Mars now
C.the atmosphere around Mars is full of methane
D.Curiosity is designed to test the atmosphere around the earth
50.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Humans benefit a lot by going to Mars.

C.It is possible to build an earth-like environment on Mars.
D.A robotic vehicle helps scientists get useful information from Mars.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar(不熟悉) words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.
51.According to the writer, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A.Reading and listening. B.Reading and writing
C.Writing and speaking. D.Speaking and listening.
52.To improve your reading, when you read you should ______.
A.look up all the new words in the dictionary
B.think about what you are reading actively
    C.spend more time studying grammars
D.copy as many words and sentences as possible
53.The underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2 can probably be replaced by “______”.
    A.hear B.discover C.meet by accident D.look for
54.The passage is mainly about how to ______.
    A.choose suitable listening materials
B.deal with new words in reading
C.become fluent in speaking and writing English
D.improve your reading ability as quickly as possible
55.The author seems to agree with the view that____.
A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B.you needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day.
C.you should take notes of whatever you are hearing.
D.being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening.
One night, during the first of my eldest son’s three basketball games, we happened to be sitting next to a lady with a young son. The little boy looked slightly younger than my youngest son. At one point in the game, the little guy looked over to my son, and said, “Wanna be my friend?” My husband leaned over to tell me what he heard. I spent the next 20 minutes taking pictures of my oldest son on the court, and my youngest son, with his new buddy, playing games two seats down from where I sat. It was a heartwarming scene and reminded me how easy it can be to make new friends.
A few hours earlier, we went to a downtown cafe for an afternoon treat. There were no free tables for four, so we took a table for two, and crowded into the small space, each taking a bite of everyone else’s order. We were loud.
We were very likely annoying the college students with open laptops, drinking coffee and working hard to finish midterm papers. One such young lady came over to our table and said, “I have more room at my table. I am happy to trade with you guys so you can spread out.” It was a simple act but it showed a selfless heart. We politely refused her offer, but her kindness stuck with me for hours after it happened.
These are just two of everyday kindnesses I often take for granted. Though often neglected by us, these small acts of service, friendliness and human care are what it takes to make the world go round.
56.What was heart - warming according to Paragraph 1? (no more than 10 words)

根据第二段“Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence.(然后他们的良好关系破裂了。 故选A项。
根据第五段“I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more.(我要你建个栅栏,8英尺高的栅栏。
结合下文“Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other,” said Farmer Bob.(然后他们在中间相遇,手拉着手。 所以“You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!(你能够建造这座桥真是个了不起!)” 故选A项。
结合文章内容和最后一段“I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.(木匠说:“我也想留下来,但是我还有更多的桥要建。”)”
D选项“A Fence or a Bridge(栅栏还是桥梁)”概括文章主题。

根据第二段中“Curiosity landed on Mars in August 2012 after travelling through space for more than eight months.(“好奇号”于2012年8月在太空中飞行了八个多月后登陆火星。)”
根据第五段中“Curiosity also found smooth stones like the ones found on river beds and seashores on the earth, where their rough edges have been worn down by water.(“好奇号”还发现了光滑的石头,就像在河床和海岸上发现的那些石头一样,它们粗糙的边缘已经被水磨掉了。)”
根据第五段最后一句“Mars is very cold and dry now,but scientists say the smooth stones tell them that a river used to run through the place where they were found.(火星现在非常寒冷和干燥,但科学家们说,这些光滑的石头告诉他们,曾经有一条河流流经这些石头被发现的地方。)” 故选A项。
根据第六段“Curiosity has been testing the atmosphere around Mars for a type of gas called methane (甲烷), but so far it has not found any. On the earth, most methane is produced by plants or animals. Methane on Mars might indicate that some type of tiny plants or animals lived there.(“好奇号”一直在测试火星周围的大气中是否有一种叫做甲烷的气体,但到目前为止还没有发现。
根据第一段“Scientists have not found any signs of life on Mars yet, but they say a robotic vehicle called “Curiosity” is helping them learn a lot about the planet’s history and climate.(科学家们还没有在火星上发现任何生命迹象,但他们表示,一个名为“好奇号”的机器人飞行器正在帮助他们了解火星的历史和气候。)

根据第一段中的“The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.”
根据第二段中的“But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc.”
根据画线词所在的句子及画线词后的“but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them”可知,不要费力去理解你遇到的不熟悉的单词,只要你以后再遇到它们的时候认出它们就好了,由此可知画线词词义为“偶然遇到”,故C项正确。
根据文章第一段中的“If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing.”
根据第三段中的“You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening.”
【点睛】方法策略类阅读理解的文体特点决定了其主题句往往在文章的第一句,考生们应充分利用这一特点,抓住文章主题句,例如本篇第4题,文章第一段中的“If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing.”

根据第一段“I spent the next 20 minutes taking pictures of my oldest son on the court, and my youngest son, with his new buddy, playing games two seats down from where I sat. It was a heartwarming scene Seeing my youngest son playing games with his new buddy.
根据第三段“One such young lady came over to our table and said, “I have more room at my table. I am happy to trade with you guys so you can spread out.” To trade table with us.
根据第一段“It was a heartwarming scene and reminded me how easy it can be to make new friends. (这是一个温暖人心的场景,提醒我结交新朋友是多么容易)”、第三段“We politely refused her offer, but her kindness stuck with me for hours after it happened.(我们礼貌地拒绝了她的提议,但事情发生后,她的善意一直伴随着我好几个小时)”以及最后一段“These are just two of everyday kindnesses I often take for granted (这只是我日常认为理所当然的两种善意)”可推理出,作者认为自己不应该把这些善意认为理所当然,故填She shouldn’t have taken everyday kindnesses for granted.
根据第一段“At one point in the game, the little guy looked over to my son, and said, “Wanna be my friend?” 以及“my youngest son, with his new buddy, playing games two seats down from where I sat. It was a heartwarming scene The first story touched me most. It tells me how easy it is to make friends and be friendly to others.
