(2018·湖南株洲·统考中考真题)Copenhagen is one of the best places in the world to be a bicyclist but there is a downside — thousands of parked bicycles. Sometimes it gets out of control.
In 2014, when Copenhagen got its Cycle Snake — a new bicycle-only bridge — the city edged even closer to being a cyclists’ paradise.
There are in fact more bicycles in Copenhagen than people, five times as many bicycles as cars, and 400 km of cycle lanes — not shared with cars or pedestrians (行人) — for a city of about 600,000 people.
This has many advantages, such as cleaner air and physical fitness. If only more thought had gone into what happens when riders get off. Cycle parking is a big problem here.
Bikes are often parked on the pavement, taking up pedestrian space and blocking(堵住) entrances to shops and restaurants.
Outside Copenhagen’s central train station, where people often leave their bikes for the weekend, plenty of cyclists are fed up. “There just isn’t enough space,” says Kirsten Hoeholt, a famous artist.
While 95% of cyclists in the city are happy with conditions for cyclists overall, only 29% are satisfied with cycle-parking facilities-down from 40% in 1996.
One of Copenhagen’s is that it has been growing rapidly. About 12,000 people are moving to the city each year, while only 7,000 new cycle parking spaces have been created over the last eight years.
One Dutch idea on its way to Copenhagen is taking away the bikes that are parked in the wrong areas. Leave your bike in the wrong place and you could find that it has been moved to nearby bicycle facilities.
A few years ago, “bike-butlers” were introduced in some areas. The butlers pick up bicycles that have been knocked over, pump air into flat tyres and give the bike-chains a bit of oil, to thank people for parking properly.
6.The last “paradise” in the fourth line means ________.
    A.factory B.company C.heaven
7.There are about ________ people in Copenhagen.

The Smaller, the Better! After reading the article” The Benefits(益处) of Living Small”, I decided that my husband and I should sell our 2500 square-foot home to move into a 300 square-foot home.
We have no children, yet we have five bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens, and a huge living room. We can never afford to take time off from work to enjoy the things in life that we really want to, because our bills are so high. But when we downsize, I will be able to leave my job, and won’t have to spend hours each week cleaning!
I’m sure our new little home will encourage us to get outside more often, spend more time with friends and family, and make our world more beautiful by using less energy and preventing further urban sprawl(城市扩张). I think all owners of large homes should consider going smaller!
    From Jane Adams
            ________
I disagree entirely with the one-sided article you published last month, “The Benefits of Living Small”.
Little homes such as the ones the writer wrote about in the article cost a small part of what normal family homes cost, and our economy(经济)is sure to feel the influence of this. Many educated people will experience brain drain(人才外流),not to mention all the construction workers who will be left jobless.
The “simple way of life” the writer speaks of in his article is nothing but simple. However, working hard and living in large, comfortable homes is something people all around the world try their best for. Before we give up the American dream, I suggest all readers reconsider selling off their biggest possession!

(2017·辽宁沈阳·统考中考真题)As an exchange student, I must admit (承认) that at first America was a big culture shock for me.
I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents organized a lot of activities in my spare time so that I wouldn’t miss home or feel lonely.
However, life was hard to get used to. My main problem was with the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke so fast. Though I managed to get used to it, I still have problems because they used a lot of idioms(习语).
Another difference was with the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really miss the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home.
School was a big shock too. They do not require students to wear uniforms, so students can wear almost whatever they like. Some students have strange hairstyles (发型) as well. Some students even have pink or purple hair!
    — By Brad Li
My dream was to see some real snow, so during the Christmas holiday, we took our passport (护照) and flew over the Pacific to Calgary, Canada. We took a bus to a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. As the bus climbed through the mountains, we saw the thick snow on the trees. I was dying to get out and play with it. At last, we reached the resort and quickly jumped out of the bus. This was our first experience with snow. We were like little children — we made snow balls, and threw them at one another. Then we check in at the hotel.
The next day, we put on our ski suits and gloves, took our skis and went outside onto the snow. Our instructor took us to a gentle slope (斜坡), and showed us some basic skills. To be honest, the first lesson was not a great success. I kept on falling over, and I had to hold on to a rope to keep my balance(平衡).
However, the next day, I only fell over a few times, and I managed to do a few rapid runs. I felt pleased with myself, and my instructor told me I was doing much better. Although it was very cold, I spent most of my holiday skiing. I had a wonderful time.
